PoliticsINEC Give Lagos PVC Now! by TomiDee(op): 1:49am On Nov 30, 2014
I'm not a big fan of politics "Naija Style” and so don’t comment much on it save the occasional issue that touches my passions. I however do my civic duties (pay taxes, vote and give to charity) with the expectation that whilst some of our politicians may be inept, our institutions are there to maintain a modicum of professionalism which should reflect in their organisational operations.

Given my personal experience today at the Parkview, Ikoyi polling station, chats I have had and reports I have read, it would be overly generous to continue to believe that competence is a an endearing feature of the INEC organisation.

According to INEC, there are 70,383,427 registered voters in Nigeria, of which 5,426,391 (the highest number) are in Lagos. See http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/lagos-kano-lead-with-highest-number-of-registered-voters/186842/

In 2013, the Federal Government allocated N45 billion in the 2014 budget to enable INEC prepare for the 2015 general elections. http://m.news24.com/nigeria/Politics/News/N45bn-allocated-to-INEC-in-2014-budget-20131220

After a deafening silence since the matter surfaced, INEC now blames a computer system crash for the loss of about 1.4 Million voters data records. That’s over 25% of voters in Lagos without PVC!

According to online reports, Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola is quoted as saying “Yes, some of the data captured during the registration in 2010 crashed. This was the reason we lost about 1.4 million data for voters. We are embarking on fresh registration for them and others who were unable to register in the 2010 registration.” See http://www.naij.com/333908-pvc-inec-says-fashola-others-must-re-register.html

And so the 1.4 Million Lagos voters whose data was lost must now re-register for PVC due to INEC’s apparent lack of backups or disaster recovery for their computer systems. In 2014?

Would we accept any bank losing 25% of their customer records without heads rolling as INEC has done with Lagos voters? Are votes less important than cash?

The Lagos State Governor is one of those 1.4 Million voters without a PVC in Lagos who now have to re-register because of the INEC computer crash.

I would like to believe that INEC objectivity (even if it’s aspirational) would restrict it from being partisan (Lagos being an opposition party State) so to lose such sensitive data at such a critical time smacks of either subterfuge or incompetence.

No doubt the coming days will tell us which it is. In the mean time, I say #INECGiveLagosPVCNow
