Education / Unilag Shifts Resumption Date For 2023 Today by Tomjoetech: 12:16pm On Jan 14, 2023
The University of Lagos, also known as UNILAG, has recently announced that the new academic session will resume on January 23rd, 2022.

Results from last semester are being released gradually, and so many students have already moved into their hostels already.

In fact, it is quite funny that some couples are seen moving in pairs around evenings, as they have so much extra time on their hands.

23rd will be here in no time. Get ready to resume. Pack your bags, foodstuff, and umbrella, as the rainy season will soon be here

Career / School Is Not Scam - Come And Share Your Story by Tomjoetech: 8:49am On Dec 13, 2022
'School na scam' is one of the wrong slogans people sometimes use, in a place like Nigeria.

Yes, there are cases of first-class graduates who are unemployed. The truth is that, there are 4 reasons why that can happen:
- The person went to a school that doesn't have 'rep'
- The person didn't network properly and doesn't have value outside exams.
- They are following the person from the village.

If you had good grades that opened doors for you, feel free to share your stories here to inspire young students who are currently discouraged by Nigerian educational system.
Programming / Re: Help!! I Need Some Advice! by Tomjoetech: 2:50pm On Dec 09, 2022

Hey guys. What advice can you give to someone whose parent always complains when they see him on the computer coding. I currently don't have a laptop so I use a desktop computer which is situated at one corner of the sitting room. Most times my parents sees me there they aren't really pleased with me they keep on saying im spending too much time on the computer. I need some advice on how to tackle this issue.

Hello there. I was in your shoes about two years ago. I had to sit them down and calmly explain what programming is, what design is, and that I usually make money from it. It is not their fault, you just have to explain to them gently. They will understand and support you.

Asides from explaining, make sure you don't abandon your responsibilities at home because you are programming o cheesy cheesy

Romance / Re: How Often Do You Check For Red Flags In Yourself by Tomjoetech: 2:44pm On Dec 09, 2022
Hmm, i think this is a healthy conversation. Mainly because everybody seems to have so many expectations from their partners, and we don't talk so much about working on ones self. It's important to have reflections to see if we are toxic or unkind, and fix it

Education / ASUU Calls Of Strike. Information About Unilag Resumption Date by Tomjoetech: 8:05am On Oct 14, 2022
ASUU Strike Has Been Called Off! When is UNILAG's Resumption Date?

A few days ago, I shared the latest ASUU strike update here on this blog, and everything I said turned out to be true.

Last night, there was a meeting held by some members of the ASUU body on whether or not the strike would end or not. This morning, we were hit with the news - that the ASUU strike has been called off.

But many UNILAG students want to know when UNILAG will resume because a large percentage of students have moved on with their life.

Some have gotten full-time jobs, some have found love and gotten married, and so on.
The truth is that many blogs claim that UNILAG will resume on the 17th. And that is a very unrealistic prediction, because of two reasons

Education / Re: A Foolish Move? Nigerian Government Wants To Disband ASUU by Tomjoetech: 11:16am On Oct 05, 2022
itsRhamzy:
it makes perfect sense. On no account should any union whatsoever be allowed to be too powerful than the government, not even in the developed worlds.
ASUU should've shifted ground and return to the class and continue negotiations but Dem dey do strong-head. E go soon clear for their eyes. Before saying FG wants to destroy the education system, what has ASUU done with the monies FG gave them in the past? Have the universities witnessed any slight change after then? Nothing! Yet they kept students at home for close to a year now, that about 17 months strike within a 3 year span. This life isn't supposed to be that hard, if your workplace doesn't appear favorable to you again despite requests to the FG, take the exit and go look for jobs elsewhere where all your demands will be met. You don't complicate students life extending their stay in the university for selfish agitations.

I support the registration of this new body. At least our students can go back school and whoever doesn't want to lecture anymore can go to hell. Nonsense and ASUU.

hello, thanks for your comment. But we all know that ASUU has been patient in the past. If it was before, they would agree with the government and resume. Yet, nothing will be done. many of the staff cant look for job at this time, they are too old to switch careers.

BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian Government Planning to Disband ASUU
October 04, 2022

The current academic strike in Nigeria is a painful reality. And what is more painful than the strike is the fact that the Nigerian government does not care about the negative impacts of the strike.

ASUU strike Nigerian goverment

The Nigerian government is making moves to disband ASUU and set up an alternative body. This does not make sense in any way, but once again, this is Nigeria.

According to a reliable source in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, will submit the Certificate of Registration to the new union today.

The source clarified that the government's action is a step in the process of deregistering ASUU, which has been on strike since February 17.

It was discovered that CONUA registration had been approved as a means of controlling ASUU's ongoing strikes, which frequently disrupt public colleges.

“The Minister, on behalf of the federal government will today present Certificate of Registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA). With that, ASUU may cease to exist again in our universities,” the source said.

Education / Six Months Of ASUU Strike: What Nigerian Students Are Facing!!! by Tomjoetech: 3:35pm On Sep 05, 2022
Unfortunately, this ASUU strike problem is a problem of two elephants that are fighting. When two elephants fight, it is the ground that suffers for it. And honestly, it is not fair.

Some students have japa-ed, and a very small fraction of students have moved to private universities because they can afford it. But what happens to those that cannot afford that luxury?

Nairaland / General / The Problem Of Environmental Pollution In Nigeria By Efe Egube by Tomjoetech: 9:05am On Feb 04, 2022
Nigeria is a really big country, with a total surface area of 983,213 km, and is inhabited by about 120 million people. With these numbers, a problem we face is the problem of Environmental Pollution. Today, we will be looking at this problem and how it can be tackled!

The interaction of these millions of people with their surroundings has left an enduring impact on the natural environment.

The environment refers to any organism's overall living and non-living conditions that are necessary for its survival and long-term viability.

The consequences of man's interactions with his environment include urbanization, deforestation, desertification, overpopulation, and many forms of pollution. These changes take place as people try to satisfy their seemingly insatiable needs for food, shelter, recreation, and infrastructure.

Despite the fact that these needs and wants aid towards the country's progress, the inappropriate use of land and resources has adverse environmental consequences.

Environmental pollution was not a major issue in Nigeria as we were focused on agriculture before industrialization and urbanization took over. The oil boom witnessed in 1970 led Nigeria into industrialization and we abandoned agriculture for oil exploration. This was the beginning of environmental pollution in Nigeria. The 1970s oil boom resulted in a massive surge in industrial activity.

Education / JAMB Uncovers And Exposes 706,189 Fake Admissions From 2017 Till 2020 by Tomjoetech: 10:36pm On Nov 27, 2021
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has seriously frowned against offering admissions to applicants by higher institutions outside the legal method - the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).

JAMB said that apart from distorting the statistics of enrollment into the nation’s tertiary institutions which it noted is required for national planning and development strategies, the conduct is also “a violation of ministerial directive on education policy.”

Is-haq Oloyede, which is the JAMB registrar, who said this few days ago at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, noted that in spite of the constant warning against such conduct, Nigerian tertiary institutions offered a total of 706,189 ‘illegal’ admissions across universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and monotechnics between 2017 and 2020.
