Taking care of your mental health should not only be something we do when we are struggling, it should include small, intentional choices we make every day. Having a daily routine that supports your mental well-being can help you feel less stressed, overwhelmed and more in tune with yourself. Here are realistic steps to build a routine that’s kind to your mental well-being: 1. Start Your Day Slowly Most times, when we wake up, we jump straight into activities without letting our minds process the beauty of the new day. Intentionally starting your day slowly can set a calm tone for the rest of your day. Wake up 10–15 minutes earlier to simply breathe or meditate. Allow yourself to be present and notice what comes to mind. Keep a journal beside you to jot down your thoughts. You can also stretch lightly when you get out of bed before starting your daily activities. Avoid diving into screens right after waking to give your mind space to ease in. 2. Create a Flexible To-Do List Having structure helps, but being too rigid can lead to burnout. Write down everything you’d love to accomplish, then choose 2–3 key tasks to focus on for the day. Let yourself carry over non-urgent tasks instead of forcing completion. Give yourself permission to adjust your list without guilt it’s okay to flow with your energy levels. 3. Include Mental “Breathers” Mental breathers are short, intentional breaks that allow your mind to reset, unwind, and recharge. Schedule these breaks between work or study sessions. Use them to check in with yourself, take a short walk, enjoy a snack, stretch, or even nap briefly. Small pauses can prevent mental exhaustion and improve clarity. 4. Make Time for Movement You don’t have to go to the gym for this. Even light movement like dancing, stretching, or walking outside can lift your mood and release tension. Daily movement boosts both mental and physical energy. 5. Eat Nourishing Meals Food affects your mind, too. Try to eat balanced meals that energize and satisfy you, and stay hydrated throughout the day. Nourishment fuels your focus, mood, and stamina. 6. Practice Mindfulness in Little Ways Mental wellness also depends on how present you are in your daily life. You can practice mindfulness through small acts. Put your phone down while eating, listen to music without multitasking, take deep breaths, or fully enjoy a quiet moment. Being present helps you reconnect with yourself. 7. Set a “Winding Down” Time Mental rest is just as important as physical rest. Create a nighttime ritual that signals to your brain that it’s time to relax. Stop screen time at least 30 minutes before bed. You can read, journal, stretch, or listen to calming music instead. This consistency helps you sleep better and feel more refreshed. 8. Check in With Yourself Regularly Ask yourself questions, Don’t avoid your feelings • “How am I really feeling today?” • “Why am I feeling irritable?” • “What do I feel like doing right now?” • “Do I currently like what I’m doing?” Write your answers down when you can. This builds self-awareness and helps prevent burnout. 9. Stay Connected You don’t have to talk every day, but do make space for safe, healthy conversations with people you trust and are comfortable with.. Connection can be healing and even short, meaningful exchanges can change a lot. 10. Don’t Force Productivity Every Day Some days are slower than others, and that’s okay. Progress isn’t just about how much you accomplish,it’s about how well you do it. Growth is not linear. One day you might be at 100%, another day at 20%, and that doesn’t make you any less worthy. Be kind to yourself through the ups and downs. What mental health practice are you currently adopting and which one would you love to? |
What comes to mind when you hear the word mental health? For me, I used to think mental health was only something people talked about when everything was falling apart Like when someone had to be hospitalized because they were starting to act “crazy” or when they could no longer function as themselves again because they were severely depressed. As long as they were “fine,” I didn’t think they had mental health issues. But over the years, I have come to realize that mental health issues aren’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s when you are constantly tired, not enjoying the things you used to love, snapping at people you love, constantly overwhelmed, or just not feeling like yourself anymore. If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her: “Hey, you don’t need to be at rock bottom to check in with your mental health. The moment you can see the small subtle signs, prioritize and take care of it like you would do for a physical illness.” Here are 7 things I wish I knew earlier about mental health 1. My Feelings Are Valid I often thought I was being “too sensitive,” or that I should just “get over it.” After all, it is not deep, and countless people have gone through it without breaking down or having issues. Now I know better. I am my own person, and I don’t need to compare my feelings to those of others going through similar experiences. I don’t have check if they felt exactly how i feel validate what I’m feeling right now. My feelings are real, and I am allowed to feel them without feeling guilty. I do not need to explain them away or even justify them and you shouldn’t either. Validating your own emotions is the first step toward healing. 2. I Have to Earn Rest Everyone thinks they are superhumans until they realize they are not. I used to wait until I was burnt out before allowing myself a break. I believed rest was something I deserved only after accomplishing enough. But now I know better. Rest is not a reward, it’s a requirement. My mental health requires me to prioritize rest and breaks to breathe not just time to recover. Now it’s in the important section of my to-do list. 3. Asking for Help Isn’t Weakness Have you ever thought asking for help was a sign of weakness? I did too. Somehow, I thought I had to handle everything on my own. That if I asked for help, I would be a bother to them and it would change the image they had of me. I thought they would see me as a weak person who couldn’t even handle this much. But the truth is healing doesn’t happen in isolation. I have learned that reaching out is not weakness; instead, it’s one of the bravest things I could do. And reaching out doesn’t make anyone think less of me. Instead, I have been embraced and encouraged throughout such phases. 4. I Don’t Have to Talk If I Am Not Ready Most times, people say, “Just talk to someone,” as if it solves everything. But what if I just needed time alone to be by myself, in my head with my feelings, and just recharge? One of the friendly reminders to myself is that opening up to someone is not always a prerequisite to healing. Yes, opening up has a great deal of benefit, but I don’t have to always talk to someone out of compulsion every time I feel my mental health is taking a dive, especially when I don’t want to. I don’t have to force myself to open up when I am not ready. If silence feels safer for me right now, that’s okay. I will take the time I need to rest, reflect, and recharge. Then I can decide to share my story or not when I feel like it. 5. Mental Health Isn’t Always Visible Struggles don’t always show. People can smile, laugh, go to work, and still be hurting. Just because something looks “fine” on the outside doesn’t mean it’s not heavy on the inside. Everyone is fighting battles I might not see. Including myself. So I choose to always be kind to others. Talk with consideration of others’ feelings. Do to others what I would love to be done to me also. 6. My Worth Is Not Tied to Productivity I had a hard time learning this and I am still learning it. I believed my value was in what I could produce. If I wasn’t busy and producing results, then I wasn’t valuable. But that’s a lie. I am not a machine. I am a person. And my worth is not something I earn; it’s something I already have. Yes, I am worth a lot. That does not give me an excuse to not build for myself a life that I absolutely deserve. Instead, it helps me see myself outside of just building. I am still very valuable whether or not I am productive. So on the days when I am productive, I am happy and content with myself. On days I am not, I am still happy and content with myself. 7. Healing Isn’t a Straight Line I used to get frustrated when I had a bad day after a few good ones. It was a toxic habit that made all the memories of good days disappear because somehow I became fixated on the bad ones. But now I know: healing is not a straight road. Sometimes,It winds. It pauses. It continues. What matters is that I keep going at your pace. When I fall, I do not go back to point zero. Instead, when I do get up, I continue from where I stopped. So before you leave here, Take a deep breath. Reflect on your mental health and help yourself to these truths so you don’t have to go through years learning them like I did. Be kind to yourself today and decide to priotize your mental health. |
