Science/Technology / Iphone Backup Password Not Working, How To Restore? by Tonier: 8:42am On Dec 27, 2012
Lost iPhone backup password Windows!
Actually, I don't recall ever setting one. Now however, I have a new phone and cannot restore iPhone backup, as there it prompts me for a password I don't have! I tried all the ones I've used for my iPhone and pretty much every other one of which I can think, all to no avail. I need the data in the back up. But I can't get to it. I've already tried the keychain route to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OSX 10.6.7 and iTunes 10.2.2. The iPhone is an iPhone 4.

I may have found a solution to this, as it has worked for me already. When I had met such problem; I had restored my phone to an old point just to see what it was like and when I tried to restore it back to my most recent one it asked for a iTunes backup password. I put in any it could possibly be to no avail. On the summary page on iTunes, I went down to the back up section and saw the "Encrypt iPhone backup" part was unchecked, so I checked it and entered a new password. I went to restore it and when asked for the password, I simply put in the password I just set it as and it worked. From my observation everything is back exactly how it was.

If you encrypt iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password you can continue to do backups and use the device; however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync. If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you will have to do a full software restore and when prompted by iTunes to select the backup to restore from, choose Set up as a new device. But first, remove iPhone password encryption listed under iTunes>Preferences>Devices.

Do you have a company exchange account on your phone? I ask, because encrypting the iPhone backup can be required by the profile installed on your phone.

I hope this helps anyone with this problem. I had the same problem. I have terrible memory so for all my social networks I use the same password. So it’s impossible that the password to my phone back-up was "the password" I used for all my social networks. In my fury I typed 1234, and it worked. I have never used 1234 for anything ever so maybe it’s a security mechanism or just my luck. Hope it helps though.

I am having the same iPhone backup password not working problem, I have never set up a password for a back up and I remember all my passwords and yet now that I went to restore my phone it is asking me for one.

If anyone tried to tell you how to get past the passcode on an encrypted iPhone backup, our hosts would delete the post or this entire thread before you ever saw the answer. You do realize this is an Apple owned forum. You'll have to use Google & hope that you don't get ripped off...there are a number of charlatans out there.
