The night before, Osazuwa could hardly sleep. He watched as Bukky snored quietly and at a point he wondered how he had gotten to that point in his life. He had never liked the woman deeply so how did she end up in his bed for the past ten years? He tried to sleep again and again but how could he while his son was still locked up.

For some weird reason, the police refused to release the boy. His lawyer ran around quoting all the law but it was an exercise in futility. At the end of the day, the lawyer said Jesuorobo was most likely going to be released on Monday morning. Osazuwa was livid and he could not hide his frustration ‘’what for?’’ he asked his lawyer. ‘’The boy has told them all he knows. He has told them he saw the woman driving in on the said day’’

Then his lawyer called him aside and asked him to calm down before they charged his son with something else ‘’Jesuorobo was wrong’’ the lawyer explained. ‘’Your son hid material fact and lied to the police time and time again. In addition, he accepted money to keep quiet. That is a very serious offense Mr Okungbowa; very very serious. At the moment, the case is still under investigation. The doctor lady is not even in custody yet so there is no way your son will be released tonight. I can tell you that much for free. Even if you drag all the SAN’s in Benin City here, they will not release your son. Even if you bring the Chief Justice of Nigeria here, they will not release your son tonight. Not while those people are still out there. I can’t even get a word out of my regular contact here. Everything is hush hush until the woman and her husband are in police custody’’

‘’Why don’t they effect the arrest then? What are they waiting for? Why are those folks not here as we speak’’

‘’Please be patient my friend. Like I said, this is a live investigation; piping hot! If you react anyhow, you will get burnt. I am doing my best here and our prayer is that they get the lady doctor and tie up any loose end. Only then can your son be released’’

Then Professor Buwa replied in a calm voice ‘’she killed my daughter!’’

‘’Drop it, it won’t be necessary. You can take your purse and phone’’ Imonitie whispered. Then he held her shoulder and began to speak slowly ‘’remember what we spoke about? Your reply should be ‘no answer’ short and simple. If they ask you any question your answer should be ‘no answer’. Tell them you are pregnant and hopefully they go easy on you. Tell them you want to speak to your lawyer first. Insist on your right and hopefully we can make it within the next hour or so. Pearl, if you have never listened to me in your life now is the time. Don’t say a word until Ejemen arrives – I beg you with my life. If they ask you any question what should you say?’’

‘’No answer’’

‘’Good’’

Then Imonitie led his crying wife out. As Pearl was led out of her compound, the 'almighty' chatterbox of Obaretin Street was outside! Nogie was outside her house with her baby in her arms. She wore a nightgown and her wrapper was tied around her chest. She completed the look with a black hairnet but you could see her braids sticking out of it. The noise had woken her up and she wondered what the police were doing outside her neighbour’s house.

But there was nothing to fear, she was just in time for the main attraction. She watched in shock and horror as Pearl was led out in handcuffs. For some weird reason, Professor Buwa just happened to be standing by the police car. Then Nogie’s mouth dropped open as the implication dawned on her but somewhere in her head she didn’t believe it. She called out her relations name and dropped her baby with the girl. Then she ran out of her house on bare foot ‘’what is going on here?’’ she asked.

Unique brushed her aside while another male officer hovered around. It was the ugly officer that escorted Chichi to Imonitie’s store the previous day. Nogie kept running around until she stood beside Imonitie ‘’why did they handcuff doctor? What is going on?’’ she asked again.

‘’Good, you can go now’’

Imonitie waited patiently at the gate and once Rabiu got back with the message, he shrugged his shoulder and walked back home. Once he arrived, Pearl attacked him with questions but he didn’t have the answers she needed and he explained this carefully ‘’dear, I don’t know when he travelled or when he'll be back. I was not given all those information but the gateman said he is away. If you ask me, I think that is a good thing’’

Pearl thought about it for a minute before yelling in relief ‘’Imo, you are right. Now I think of it, I remember Jesuorobo telling me he needed to leave Benin once he received the money’’

‘’What a relief now I can relax a bit ’’

And so the Ebosele’s believed the police had not gotten through to Jesuorobo but they were wrong – so wrong.

''I don’t feel good’’ Pearl replied in a weak voice.

‘’Just try to be calm. Immediately I picked Ose, I spoke to Ejemen Okogie about this thing. I was quite honest with her; I told her everything’’

''Every as in everything?''

''Yes. Every single little detail down to the tinniest bit''

‘’You didddddddddddd!’’ Pearl cried out.

‘’Dear I had to; this thing is beyond us. We both know what to say and they cannot break us but remember another person is now involved. We don’t know what can roll out of Jesuorobo’s lips. We need legal help. I had to tell her everything and she advised me on certain things. I will explain everything to you once we meet’’

Then Pearl continued to cry and speak at the same time ‘’I don’t think I can stay at work any longer. I can’t concentrate anymore. The policeman was quite hard on me although I didn’t let out anything. I’m so stressed plus I’ve been throwing up since morning. Please come and pick me now’’

‘’Hang in there – I’m on my way’’

''What did I do wrong? What part don’t you get? I said dude asked to speak to his lawyer. I couldn’t detain him further. I tried to call you but your phone was not going through. I beg lets go outside so I can explain it properly besides people are beginning to stare at us''

Chichi tried to hold his arm but Unique shrugged her off ‘’no there is no time to go outside'' he yelled. ''I thought you would hold on to him until I got back. You should have bent the lawyer rule this one time. We can’t have the three of them running around like the three bloody musketeers!’’

‘’I've just explained why it was impossible to hold him but this is the fun part’’

‘’What?’’

‘’Your hot body did not allow you see road. You ran off in a hurry but I got it covered you see. Someone is watching over Jesuorobo as we speak. The dude didn’t go to work today. He is at home and has not stepped out’’

Then for the first time Unique smiled at Chichi ''I hope you're not kidding me?'' he asked.

''Why would I?''

‘’Oh Chichi, I want to hug you so tight and squeeze the life out of you’’

‘’Don’t you dare’’ Chichi whispered.

‘’Of course I can’t – you are a married woman. What do you take me for? Why didn’t you just give me this information the whole time I was going crazy’’

''Because sometimes you need to calm down but its fun watching you turn into The Incredible Hulk''

Suddenly Unique announced in a loud voice ‘’this woman is a brilliant officer; a round of applause for her please’’

Their colleagues began to laugh; some clapped but most laughed and continued to stare at them. Then he turned to Chichi and whispered ‘’are you ready?’’

‘’Is that a question? I’ve been waiting for you ever since. Let’s go to the cul-de-sac; Obaretin Street beckons’’

That's a very good one. I think thats what most people may do at this stage. Go with friends of the Buwa's and plead.

‘’I’ll tell you what I want. I have it on good authority that this past Sunday, your husband was with Jesuorobo. Someone was threatening someone and the other was asking for his money. The one who received the money said something about reporting to the police or Professor Buwa. I’d like to know what that conversation was about. I would like to know why your husband paid money to Jesuorobo’’

Then Pearl rose up on her feet and whispered ‘’I have no idea besides your contact did not see me there. I don’t know why we are having this conversation. You said someone is speaking to my husband and Jesuorobo insist it? Why don’t you continue with that line of your investigation? I’m sorry but I can’t help you in that regard. I have patients waiting to see me’’

Then Unique rose up on his feet and announced ‘’you are doing more harm to yourself doc. There is something known as obstruction of justice. It is not a smart thing to hide information that can aid in solving a crime. You are a professional and so I expect you to know that. In addition, there is a punishment for a person who acts as an accomplice. Do you know what that means? It is a person who joins with another in carrying out an unethical or illegal plan. Don’t think you are immune because you are a woman or a doctor?’’

‘’Officer, please don’t threaten me. If you have something on me then make your arrest if not…’’

‘’Not yet but I have a good feeling I’ll be back Dr Ebosele. I’m like a dog; my colleagues actually call me a bulldog’’

‘’I’m sorry to hear that officer’’

‘’No, don’t be. It’s actually a good thing. I’m like the proverbial patient dog. I may not get the flesh but I get to crack the bone and believe me, that’s the part that excites the dog''

''Okay''

‘’Oh yes, it was Mr Ebosele and the young man Jesuorobo – they call him barrister but I don’t know about that’’

‘’Mrs Okungbowa and yes I know it is you. I recognize the sound of your voice but don’t you worry. This remains what it is; a tip from an anonymous source. By the way when did this happen?’’

‘’It was this past Sunday around 6pm. I can’t be sure of the exact time though’’

‘’That’s okay and you said something about money. Did you see money change hands? And who gave out the money?’’

‘’Erm well to be fair, I didn’t see the money with my na.ked eyes but I heard them refer to it as money. It was in a small black polythene bag so I can’t say for sure. Mr Ebosele gave the money to Jesuorobo. Ehmm I need to go now but please try and follow up on this tip. Ever since this incident, I’ve been living in fear. I don’t know what that young man is up to. I mentioned it the other time and now I have been vindicated. Please ensure…’’

‘’We will do our best Mrs Okungbowa; thanks for informing the police. Erm Mrs… sorry are you still there? Yeah, I’d like you to keep this information to yourself for now’’

‘’My lips are sealed’’

‘’Good one. Good night then and thanks for making your neighbourhood a safer place’’
