Gaming / Mesmer[gw2] by tp6gw2: 4:47am On Nov 01, 2012
I remember throughout Beta everyone complaining that the mesmer was weak, underpowered and a buggy mess. On the bug front, they’ve made some good fixes and the fact Phantasms aren’t overridden by Illusions is a great change. What makes me smile now however is people have actually gotten to grips with the mesmers abilities and potency and are finally reaping rewards. Having played the mesmer for well over 400 hours there isn’t much I don’t know about it and while there are still some things that annoy, its in really great shape. There are however two things that I feel make it lurch towards the dreaded “Overpowered!” terriority. The first is Phantasm swapping and the fact that I can summon an Illusionary Swordsman and then swap to greatsword to summon Illusionary Berserker in a couple of seconds. With a high crit build, it isn’t uncommon for me to cause 10,000 damage within that time frame.

The fact I can then shatter them or hit my foe with a leap/blurred frenzy combo makes it all the more potent. Factoring in that Phantasms are fire and forget skills that require no aiming or thought leaves me a little uncomfortable at times at how powerful weapon swapping is to the mesmer. The second issue I have is portal because this single skill is making mesmers a crutch for all tournament teams and is having a devastating impact on the point capture meta game. Instant trebuchet repairs and instant traversal across the map (made even worse with two mesmers) makes the game almost impossible for those teams who haven’t brought a mesmer. While you can argue “kill the mesmer!” it really isn’t an easy task when most mesmer’s utilise the staff and cloak skills to full effect. I would go as far as to say it’s like catching a fly with chopsticks.

Still on the subject of portals, why don’t they have a 5 player limit? Portalling groups of 50+ people around World versus World make the profession the crutch of effective groups. I can’t help but think if all other skills have a 5 player effect limit, why don’t the mesmers?

Gaming / [GW2] Heartbreaker by tp6gw2: 2:20am On Oct 26, 2012
Many Guild Wars 2 hearts ask you to collect or retrieve things. Somewhat breaking the logic of the hearts, you do not need to do anything with those. Picking them up gives you credit. You get more credit if you return them, but by the time you carve your way out of the bandit caves, your bandit-slaying has probably filled the heart already.

The game mechanics work just fine, but the logic is sometimes broken. The idea is that, instead of Innkeeper Bob giving me a quest to kill ten rats when I just slaughtered an entire nest of them, he will recognize that I am the rat slayer he has heard so much about, thanks, have a bit of silver and good karma. But I have completed hearts without ever seeing the heart-bearer, and he still sent me a nice “thank you” letter. I might have received most of my heart credit from checking his traps or collecting trinkets for him, but I never gave them to Bob. One of these is by the human starting area in Queensdale, a whole line of crawfish traps you can check, and then he sends you a letter thanking you without the intermediate step of “hey, what about those crawfish?”

Now you have a small stack of dredge ore, shiny red apples, jotun runestones, or broken sprinkler parts. Their only use is to turn in for heart or event progress. If those are for an event, great! Some of those events repeat rather quickly, so you could get another gold medal within the hour. If those are for a heart, you delete them. They are now completely useless and probably soulbound. Sometimes, you can still turn them in … for nothing. Hey, you already got your karma and thanks, stop being greedy. Other times, the heart-bearer will not even take them from you.

At least they usually come with a name attached so you know who to check. This is especially helpful with all the varieties of dredge ore that exist across the zones.

Gaming / Guild Wars 2 Players Find Themselves Kicked by tp6gw2: 3:41am On Oct 25, 2012
Guild Wars 2 players were distressed last night to find themselves kicked from the game during loading screens and unable to log in. Shortly after the problems began, ArenaNet's community team started communicating about them via Twitter, saying that the issues were being looked into. Forum logins were also disabled.

After about an hour of downtime, the game was once again accessible to all -- with a slight problem. Many players discovered that they'd lost the fruits of recent endeavors, including map exploration, items, experience, and gold. According to the Guild Wars 2 Twitter, the team is unable to restore progression or items due to the nature of the outage.

Beyond updates as the issue was being resolved, no one from ArenaNet has given comment about the nature of the outage or how such problems will be avoided in the future.

Gaming / Why Features And Not Others? by tp6gw2: 6:21am On Oct 24, 2012
We’re always listening to our player base, and taking their feedback and ideas into account. We watch the forums on multiple sites. We read the comments on Guild Wars 2 articles. We take off our guild tags, sit in crowded maps in game, and eavesdrop on your conversations and unfettered opinions. Who watches the watchers? We do.

We hear a lot of the things you’ve asked for. And the truth is, a lot of the features you want will be added in the future. Just because we don’t do everything you want, exactly when you want it, does not mean we aren’t listening. There’s a ton of stuff we want tell you about – just not yet. The features we’re adding now will go a long way in helping the sPvP community grow, but there’s still more to do. Again, we don’t like talking about features until we’re ready to show them. We don’t like empty promises, and we know you don’t either. But, at the same time, we do want you to know that other features are coming! We’re trying to strike that balance in this blog post.

So why are we adding paid tournaments and custom arenas first? Why not other features first?

Paid tournaments: We’ve seen on the forums that new players feel intimidated when fighting more experienced players, and experienced players want to meet up against each other more often when playing tournaments. By having both free and paid automated tournaments, we help those two player bases find what they want more easily. New players will spend more time in free tournaments until they’re ready to pay an entry fee for a tournament, and experienced players will likely gravitate toward paid tournaments, which will let them face one another more often.

Custom arenas: We knew that adding custom arenas was going to be a big deal for the community, so we prioritized it internally as a must-have feature. There are other features we’ll be adding later that may be just as important as custom arenas, but we wanted to focus on getting players the ability to rent arenas before we added any other eSport features.

Gaming / Structured Pvp by tp6gw2: 6:05am On Oct 23, 2012
Structured PvP is a Player versus Player mode which allows competition on an even footing. All Structued PvP activities are reachable via the Heart of the Mists. There are two primary modes of play; tournament and hot join play.

Any character used to enter structured PvP retains their profession, however any race specific skills are not accessible. The character is given a fixed maximum level, and all skills and items are available without the need to unlock them first. Scores are tracked on the scoreboard. Player statistics are tracked and used to generate a player ranking.

Unlike WvW, structured PvP doesn't grant rewards usable in PvE. Instead, players earn glory and rank which are used to obtain better looking gear for use only in structured PvP.

There are several different maps for structured PvP, all of which are conquest, although other objective types are planned for the future.

Gaming / Personal Storyline by tp6gw2: 7:19am On Oct 22, 2012
The Personal Storyline in Guild Wars 2 is essentially a main quest-chain. It's missions take place in Instanced areas apart from other players. Your Personal Storyline can branch wildly based off of your choices, (race, what order to join later on, etc) and you can invite other players to participate in your story, though the end result will only affect how your story advances.

The Charr in Guild Wars 2 once ruled Blazeridge Steppes, but the rising of the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik left a corrupted swath across the land. Now the legions contend not only against the creatures of the Dragonbrand, but against the Ogres who have come down from the mountains.

The sylvari are humanoids that spawn from a plant referred to as the Pale Tree. They're plant-like in look, and are the youngest of all races on Tyria. Their youth directly translates into a curiosity about all things, plus a want to study. They're spawned fully-formed, and find out a lot of what they need to understand to survive through dreams whilst they grow within the Pale Tree. As they are closely attuned to nature, they're fervently aware from the threat posed by Zhaitan and his forces. They live in the Grove.
Gaming / The Thief In GW2 by tp6gw2: 7:59am On Oct 17, 2012
The thief makes use of a resource named Initiative, and often has at least one initiative-free capacity. The thief can Steal products from each and every enemy in the game (including players), which give exceptional, typically one-use abilities. The stolen things come from a pool of feasible things based off in the kind of enemy, or the enemys profession. Thieves are very mobile and are capable of going into Stealth. Thieves also achieve a particular potential based off in the mixture of your two weapons they wield, generating major and offhand alternatives extra vital.

The thief can wield a Sword in its main hand, Daggers and Pistols in either hand, plus a Shortbow with each hands.
Gaming / Creation In Guild Wars 2 by tp6gw2: 8:16am On Oct 16, 2012
Guilds in GW2 are cross server/world with an initial maximum capacity of 100 players. Guild capacity can be upgrade via the Guild Registrar by applying for a larger guild license. Each character may join multiple guilds but may only represent one guild at a time.

Creating a guild is a snap. Simply open the guild panel via pressing G or access it from the top left bar. Alternatively, you can go to a Guild Registrar. You can then press the Ceate Guild button to enter a name and tag (abbreviation) for your guild. Note that you will need 1 silver to create a guild.
Gaming / The Mission In Gw2:going Undercover by tp6gw2: 9:50am On Oct 15, 2012
When you enter the instance area, Anise's magic disguises you as a bandit so that you can enter their hideout without any trouble. Since you're new in the crew, you have to gain their trust before they'll let you in on any secrets. Crusher Dan first asks you to clear some skale out of the cave. This could be one of your first times dealing with underwater combat, so it can be a little tricky. Be sure to use your left click to look around while underwater, as you can aggro things above and below you as well, and it's easy to grab more enemies than you are ready for. Also, if you haven't done any water combat yet, your weapon skills won't be unlocked and you might have a starter underwater weapon still. If that's the case, just get the skale above the surface and fight them on land. It can be a lot easier.

After clearing the skale out, Crusher Dan isn't quite finished with you, so he asks you to take out Ol' Scabfin, a large veteran skale. He gives you the bait and you set it outside to fight him. He has a good amount of health, and hits pretty hard. Be sure to use your dodge when you can, and keep on him, as he regens health. Also, don't keep the bait as a weapon. It's not very good.

Once you take him out, Crusher Dan suggests you check in with others to ask how you can help. First go talk to Doc Howler, who asks you to get some plants for the plan. Get them for her and she lets you know that Pete's crew is going to poison the water in the Salma district.

Finally, talk to Riot Alice, who will end up fighting you. Afterwards she thinks she recognizes you, and says that Pete's not the man he once was, that he's dangerous now and only cares about gold. You suggest she gets out of the gang and she says she's considered it. Now to head back to Logan with your newfound information. He tells you that Quinn has been taken to one of Two Blade Pete's hideouts in Claypool. You can either help Logan take care of the poison, or save Quinn again.
Gaming / Guild Wars 2’s Pve by tp6gw2: 7:17am On Oct 12, 2012
Guild Wars 2’s PvE content is its greatest strength and I would be shocked if most MMOs do not adopt the game’s “questless” dynamic in short order. The open-ended nature of dynamic events creates a world you want to explore not out of some completist sensibility but because a new and exciting story could be waiting for you almost anywhere.

Gaming / Guild Wars 2 Verdict -- The MMO You Keep Falling In Love With(share) by tp6gw2: 6:35am On Oct 07, 2012
Guild Wars 2 is the massively multiplayer online role-playing game from ArenaNet that blends beautiful visuals with real-time combat, incredible PvP, and so much more. As the biggest MMO release of the year, we had quite a lot to say about the game. Here's a snippet from our review:

"As someone with a dreadfully short attention span, real-time combat gives me endless joy. I could dodge to avoid attacks, block in real time and do some really awesome things like throw bolas to tie someone up. Another element that adds further speed to the gameplay is an ability to swap weapons immediately during battle. This allowed me to switch from a rifle to an axe immediately when my enemies had closed in, opening up boundless combination of strategies. A significant focus was put on underwater combat, and although it was initially hard for me to grasp, I'm now rather proficient with a harpoon. Further the transition from land to water movement and combat is so seamless it's barely noticeable."

Winning Hearts and Minds

Need a little extra help taking an objective? You can always try to convince some of the local inhabitants of the Mists to join your cause and fight alongside you. Each map contains independent mercenary camps populated by some of the minor races from Tyria. These mercenaries may be willing to assist your war efforts, but only if you give them a little help first.

For instance, you might help a group of ogres protect their camp against constant harpy assaults. In return, your new ogre allies will go rampaging toward the nearest enemy objective or send out patrols to help you hold on to your territory. These factions won’t fight for you indefinitely, but they can help turn the tide of battle, so you’d be wise to recruit their aid whenever possible!

To be blunt: this is the badass race of Guild Wars 2. Artisans of war, the charr live and breathe for battle. These ruthless warriors aim to win at all costs. Victory is their goal: not money, not Guild Wars 2 gold, not even glory.

The charr are vicious, brutal and prone to violence. Although they strike fear in the hearts of their enemies, members of this feline race can be loyal allies.

Charr society is militaristic, with the Legion being the highest form of organization. There are four High Legions, each with its own specialization and goals.

Having regained dominion over their ancient land of Ascalon, the charr nevertheless have an unsteady grip on the city. Threats to the charr include ghostly warriors out for revenge; the Flame Legion, a band of charr outcasts who seek to usurp the other three Legions. The ultimate threat to the charr, however, is the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik.

Gaming / The World Of Tyria In Guild Wars 2 by tp6gw2: 3:49am On Sep 26, 2012
