UNITY AND LOVE have again been described as key elements necessary for growth and progress in the society. This was the central theme in the speeches by the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno,PhD, and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, during the commissioning of a 15.13km Ika – Azumini Road and a 1.53km internal roads in Ika local government area. The road commencing from Ikot Esu in Ika, stretches 3kilometers into Azumini in Ukwa East local government of Abia State. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike lauded Governor Umo Eno for charting the cause of Unity in Akwa Ibom State, saying it is the easiest means of breeding development. He said by agreeing to move the State to the center, work with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Eno will attract more visible federal attention to the State. “For the first time, your State is having the Number Three Citizen of the country, the Senate President. “How will you be happy that the governor is right, the Senate President is left, will that bring development to the state,” Wike quipped. Mr Wike who made reference to the recent political crises in his home State(Rivers), explained further, that leaders must always be ready to make sacrifices in the interest of their State. Mr Wike said, “I have always associated myself with those who mean well for their people. Your Governor has shown the love that he has for the people of Akwa Ibom state.” He commended the bi-partisanship stance of Governor Eno, especially how he went to construct a road leading to the hometown of the State representative in the Federal Executive Council, Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, without arguing that they were then in different political platforms. The FCT Minister corroborated the position of the Akwa Ibom Governor, that more funds were available to Governors in the States to carry out development projects for their people, because of President Tinubu’s audacious economic reforms programmes, and urged for more support of the President. Governor Eno who re-emphasized his desire to ensure completion of projects initiated by his predecessors, said “the commissioning of this road further shows our resolve to deploy our finisher’s anointing element of governance for the common good of the people. “Governance, I have always said, is a continuum, it does not matter who started a project, what is important is to finish the project for the common good of all. Appreciating the Abia State Governor for cooperating with the State for the good of the larger populace, Governor Umo Eno said, “this road opens Ika to commercial opportunities, as it provides a seamless link to the commercial nerve centre of the South East, Aba, Abia State. He said the other roads for commissioning, “the internal roads in Ikot Udom, built by Hensek Integrated Services, is in fulfilment of a promise I made last year to the Honourable Minister of State Gas, and to also help our people in that area to be able to do their businesses. “So, for me, development is not about party, development is about the common good of the people, and you are who you are, regardless of where you are. The Governor recounted that in February last year, he flagged off the 16-kilometre Midim Atan-Ikot Inyang-Ikot Akpan Ekpenyong- Udo that stretches from Essien Udim through Etim Ekpo to Ika, with a 30-metre-span bridge, and urged the Ministry of Works to ensure that the contractor NSIK Engineering expedites action on completion of the road. “If in the next three months, that road does not receive the speed that I expect I will terminate that contract. In three months, Chairman of Ika,Etim Ekpo and Essien Udim local government areas, if in three months that road doesn't receive speed, please let me know. “I will terminate that contract, I will bring another contractor, and if there's any money the contractor is owing us when we terminate the contract, I will not let the contractor go away with our money. “We're here to work for our people, and we'll do so, no matter whose ox is gored. We will do the work, and we'll deliver, because we ask for the job, and we must ensure that we deliver on our mandate.” Governor Eno who insisted that “time is not in our favour,” insisted that he will not allow any contractor to drag us into some unnecessary delays that will affect us.” “When I come back to Ika for campaign, I expect to just come and dance, and dance. When we dance, we dance for President Tinubu, we dance for Senator Godswill Akpabio, we dance for Governor Umo Eno.” The Chairman of Ika Barr Utibe Nwoko lauded the Governor on the construction of the road, saying that it was unprecedented in the history of the local government area. “My people say I should thank you our Governor, because this is the first time a road has been flagged off and completed in our local government. He said the road has both security and economic viability, and connects the area with the states in the south east and other south-south states. “This road also leads to the biggest market in Ika, the Mkpohoeto Market. This road is not just a road, this road is a connectivity and it connects the three clans of Ika. Your Excellency, this road is one road too many”, the Ika Chairman added. In their separate goodwill messages, leaders from the area, Barr. Uwemedimo Nwoko,SAN and Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, also expressed their gratitude to the Governor and pledged the unflinching support of their people to the re-election of the Governor in 2027. The Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof Eno Ibanga who recalled how the Governor, upon assumption of office, collated the road among other inherited projects in the State, and injected funds to ensure its completion. “Your Excellency, you insisted that we should construct the road into Abia, since it is still in Nigeria. That is why the road has 3.5km in Azumini, Abia State.I love the compassion you have brought to governance in our State.” The Managing Director of Cossel Engineering,Engr. Cosmas Anigbogu admitted that the terrain of the project was tough but that the Governor graciously funded the project to completion. He appreciated the Governor for the opportunity he gave them to execute the project.

General excitements rend the air, as Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, leads the Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike, and other dignitaries to the inauguration of the 15.13KM Ika - Azumini Road and some other internal roads on Wednesday, September 24,2025. The excitement was displayed when journalists were led on a tour to the roads by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Research and Documentation, Dr. Essien Ndueso. Chairman of Ika Local Government Area, Barr. Utibe Nwoko, who spoke with the journalists declared, “the road we are talking about is the first indigenous road in Ika. I am proud to say so, because there has never been a time a road has been flagged off in Ika and commissioned except this particular road. "The people are celebrating the Governor for doing this. This is to celebrate the former government of Mr Udom Emmanuel for starting the project, and the present government came to our rescue by investing in the completion of the project and other road projects. “Inside there, the women numbering thousands, have been clapping and applauding the Governor, and they will be out in their numbers tomorrow to welcome and celebrate the Governor.” The Ika Council Boss explained that the Ika-Azumini Road stretches from Ikot Esu/Ikot Akpan Okure in Ika, Akwa Ibom State to Azumini in Ukwa East, Abia State, linking Rivers State within minutes. Barr Nwoko also added that the road is one of the most viable economic corridors in the South-South, promising faster connections to major business points in Aba, Abia State. "This is one of the most viable economic roads in Akwa Ibom State. From what I have just said, you understand the enormous benefits of the road, not only to Ika people, but to the generality of Akwa Ibom people, Rivers State people, Abia people, Cross Riverians, and of course the Bayelsans. " For Catechist Biatus Udofia, a stakeholder from Ika, the project was not just about Ika land, but about bridging Akwa Ibom with its neighbours. "Ika is a border local government and this is the very first road that connects us with neighbouring our state. "It's not easy for the Governor to have agreed to invest in this project despite the fact that it stretches into Abia state. So we are grateful to this administration and we have decided to follow him. Anywhere he's going. We will follow him till 2031 and beyond. "When someone does something for you, he deserves to be appreciated. We appreciate him but we plead for him to do more by giving us more roads. Explaining the road, Engr. Cosmos Anigbogu, Managing Director of Cossel Construction Company Nigeria Limited, confirmed that the 15.13-kilometre project, with an eight-metre width and double drainage, has been fully completed and is ready for use. "This road is 15.13 kilometers, starting from Ikot Esu, Otomo to Azumini end. The road is eight meters wide with drainage on two sides and the road has been completed and is ready for commissioning. "The terrain before the construction started, was very bad. No one could even move an inch during the rainy season. “Even when we were awarded the road, our trucks couldn't pass, it was a very difficult terrain. “We had to start it and we thank Governor Umo Eno for being able to finance the road to the completion level today. "During the construction of the project, we had some challenges with the community, but everything was later settled and the two communities are happy. “And this road creates a good access to both Azumini and Ika local government in Akwa Ibom State. And this is a very big development to connect the two states, so I think the two communities are now getting together. I don't think there's any problem." |
Three decades and eight years of Statehood, Akwa Ibom ranks amongst Nigeria's fastest growing destinations of excellence in most sectors. It all began in September 23, 1987 when the foundation of statehood was established via the creation of Akwa Ibom State from Cross River State by the Military Administration of General Ibrahim Babangida. From day one, the State has been blessed with forward-thinking leaders who have had the rare privilege of piloting the affairs of the State and steering the ship of statehood in the right direction whether during the military rule or Democratic dispensation. The State's leadership journey started with Military Administrators - Colonel Tunde Ogbeha (1987-1988), Colonel Godwin Abbe (1988-1990), Wing Cdr. Idongesit Nkanga - the very first son of the soil to lead the State (1990-1992) and then a short democratic experience that produced the ever-vivacious Obong Akpan Isemin as the first democratically elected Governor of Akwa Ibom State (1992- 1993). Following the truncation of democratic era in 1993 by the General Sani Abacha regime, leadership again returned to the hands of ‘Milads’ with Lt. Col. Yakubu Bako taking over between 1993-1996. Navy Captain Joseph Adewusi (1996-1998) and Group Captain John Ebiye (1998-1999) completed that cycle of military rule leading to the return of democracy in 1999 when Obong Victor Attah, the man commonly referenced as the Father of the Modern-Day Akwa Ibom State held sway as Governor of the State between 1999-2007 laying a solid foundation for the development of the State. The trajectory continued to the Godswill Akpabio Uncommon Transformation era between 2007-2015. The Udom Emmanuel legacies in 2015 which came with a redefined philosophy - DAKKADA, aimed at awakening the giants in Akwa Ibom People. It bears necessary stating that the strides recorded by these successive leaders at different times that they had the privilege to sit at the Hilltop Mansion is what has shaped Akwa Ibom State to its present glory. What's more? The trajectory is getting more glorious with the Golden Era of Pastor Umo Bassey Eno. Today, time and seasons beckon, and in two years and four months since Pastor Umo Eno came on board as the Fourth democratically elected Governor of Akwa Ibom State, he has laid a new blueprint for the rapid development of the State. The successful implementation of the ARISE Agenda which has become a model for sustainable growth and development beyond the borders of the State, is a testament to the pragmatic leadership style of the present Governor, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno,Ph.D. As Akwa Ibom State marks her 38th year of statehood, we have been blessed with great and visionary leaders, each building on sustainable legacies, laudable impacts giving value to the society with good governance. The development of Akwa Ibom State presently under Pastor Umo Eno has carefully been guided with a well-articulated compilation and detailed implementation of the ARISE Agenda along sectoral NEEDS which continues to attract rave reviews and accolades. At 38, the establishment of Model Schools across the 31 Local Government Areas, with State-of-the-art learning facilities; a good ambience for learning, and better welfare packages for teachers are strong motivation for our youngsters to fulfil their educational aspirations and walk the paths of their careers. The completion of quality roads in hundreds of kilometres across the State consciously designed to connect those in the rural areas and boost socio- economic activities from rural to urban areas, is yet another milestone of the Pastor Umo Eno administration. Also, the ongoing health sector reforms as captured in the recent declaration of a State-of-Emergency for the next 12 months with priority attention to overhaul Primary Health Care across the Local Government Areas is another well-intentioned act of good governance. Besides all these, the Ibom International Hospital with specialised services, when completed, will open a new medical corridor, complement the Ibom Specialty Hospital as well as the Elderly Peoples Home. All these massive interventions and many others still at conception stage, will obviously position Akwa Ibom State as a destination for quality health service delivery. At 38, Sports under Governor Umo Eno has been a harvest of victories. The reintroduction of the Governor's Cup competition, hosting of the first ever Niger Delta Games, the Zonal elimination of the National Youth Games, the successful participation of Team Akwa Ibom at the National Youth Games with a top ten finish are flares added by this administration to better and transform the subsector. It is worthy of note that for over 14 years, there were no approvals for the purchase of sports equipment but the present administration has changed that narrative with new sports equipment acquired. Beyond these, the successful hosting of the just concluded maiden Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival with futuristic prospects, the creation of a standalone Sports Ministry and sustaining the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as the home of the Super Eagles, has made the State the first choice for sports tourism in Nigeria. Aviation sector remains our pride in the development of the State, as Ibom Air continues to expand its fleet with a record breaking revenue, timeliness in satisfactory service delivery to customers and now rated as Nigeria's best airline. Tourism has been given the greatest attention in the 38 years of Statehood of Akwa Ibom State under the Governor Umo Eno administration. There are projects completed to boost tourism including the Amphitheatre at the Unity Park where the State Christmas Carols holds and the Christmas Unplugged with Season 3:0 loading this December. The reactivation of historical sites across the State, the Tourism Summit coming up and the biggest of them all, the unveiling of the ARISE Park in December 2025 will be the biggest tourist attraction in Nigeria. The greatest legacy Akwa Ibom State celebrates at 38, is the unity, peace, togetherness and love that Pastor Umo Eno has brought to chart a progressive synergy with the Federal Government for more attention and commitment to our various needs. The novel idea of a Town Square Meeting across the Ten Federal Constituencies in the State has not only brought governance closer to the people and receiving their requests (inputs) for more democratic dividends, but also serve as a platform that will guide the State Government in the preparation and presentation of the 2026 Peoples Budget estimates later this year to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. The commitment of a stronger data-driven economy in all sectors remains commendable under the Pastor Umo Eno administration, as it continues to guide the formulation and implementation of government policies. The commitment to workers welfare with the new minimum wage, payment of gratuities, peaceful working relationship with the Labour workforce for greater efficiency and productivity are reckoning milestones in Akwa Ibom State. Likewise the synergy with the Legislature and Judiciary. In the areas of security, agricultural renaissance and Infrastructural upgrade, the massive revolutionary strides of the Ibom Model Farms and other food sufficiency programmes; the revamping of the Ibom Convention Centre, Ibom Hotel, ongoing Luxury Estate, the signing of the Electricity Law and summit which has positioned the State for her industrial growth and socio- economic leap with affordable and universal access to electricity-for-all-residents kick-starts a comprehensive march in achieving sustainable development and growth. The prudent management of financial resources without any external borrowing since the administration of Pastor Umo Eno came on board are very deserving trademarks that is holding up a prosperous future for generations. The overwhelming endorsements for Governor Umo Eno for a second term in Office, global and national recognitions and awards from reputable institutions, and his inclusive leadership are a clear acceptance of a renewed mandate at the polls in 2027 for another four years, with more pedestal of opportunities for more achievements. Today, Akwa Ibom State shines at 38 under the leadership of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D, and in fulfilment of the vision of our forebears, a united Akwa Ibom State has come to berth that we may speak with one voice, in strength and unity to build that future we own and cherish. At 38, Pastor Umo Eno is leading Akwa Ibom State to new heights in governance and in development. He is concertedly etching Akwa Ibom on the global Hall of Fame of States that have chosen to demystify governance in its truest form. Therefore, as we continue to march to greatness, with the ARISE Agenda on course, Akwa Ibom State is indeed rising exponentially, and will continue to rise to the chasm of development. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, AKWA IBOM STATE! By: Amos Etuk

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pst. Umo Bassey Eno PhD, has declared the Akwa Ibom Electricity Summit 2025 open, describing it as a major turning point in the State’s quest for energy security and unlimited access to power. He says the time has come for someone to take a critical decision to make things work in the State’s power sector by asking the right questions and getting the right answers. Speaking at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene, Thursday, Governor Eno said the summit must move beyond being another talk shop to producing a practical roadmap with timelines, clear responsibilities, and measurable outcomes. “For decades, our people have lived with the paradox of great energy potentials but little to show for it. Electricity is not a luxury; it is a fundamental enabler of modern life. “This Summit should deliver a concrete action plan that ensures every home, every business, and every school in Akwa Ibom has reliable power.” Speaking further, Governor Eno underscored the importance of collaboration between the State and the Federal government, recalling the recent MoU signed with the Rural Electrification Agency to expand access in underserved communities. He also stressed that Akwa Ibom state's electricity reforms would be anchored on transparency, professionalism, and partnerships with the private sector, development partners, and local communities. “Our vision is ambitious but achievable. We will not politicize electricity. We will build a State electricity market that stands the test of time and serves our people.” Earlier in her welcome address, Deputy Governor and Chairperson of the Summit Organizing Committee, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi, described the gathering as a historic moment, not only for Akwa Ibom State but for Nigeria as a whole. She noted that with the passage of the Electricity Act 2023 and the State’s own Electricity Law 2025, Akwa Ibom had the foundation to chart its own electricity market. “This summit is structured to align politics, policy, and investment with technical and financial reforms that will deliver real change. She further urged participants, regulators, investors, development partners, and community leaders to approach discussions with seriousness and focus, with the ultimate goal of producing a State Electricity Sector Action Programme to guide implementation. In his separate goodwill messages, Minister of Power represented by his Chief Technical Adviser, Hon. Adedoyin Oluwoniyi, lauded Governor Eno for taking a bold step toward energy reform. “This summit is timely and significant. As Akwa Ibom is energized, industry will grow, productivity will rise, and the economy will expand." Mr. Eyo Ekpo, Team Lead of Power Component UKNIAF, and representatives of donor agencies including the UN Development Programs, pledged support for the State’s electricity ambitions, emphasizing that the journey to a state-led electricity market was critical for Nigeria’s development. Other goodwill messages also came from the Speaker of the House of Representatives who was represented by Hon. Victor Nwokolo, Chairman, House Committee on Power, representatives of the Governors of Enugu, Abia, Cross River, and Bayelsa States, all of whom praised Akwa Ibom for setting a precedent that would benefit other states. Senator Ekong Sampson, representing Eket Senatorial District, who spoke for the National Assembly Caucus from the State, described the initiative as bold and impressive, promising their readiness to move for legislative backings to ensure that the reforms succeed. Highpoint of the event was the official unveiling of the State Electricity Regulatory Policy and the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Law, jointly performed by Governor Eno, Deputy Governor Eyakenyi, representative of the Speaker of House of Representatives, the Minister of Power’s representative, and other dignitaries, including the Governors’ representatives, the Chairman of Ibom Power, Acting Managing Director of Ibom Power, the Attorney General, and the Commissioner for Justice, the Secretary to the State Government and the Executive Assistant to the Governor. The summit, themed "Attaining Energy Security and Universal Access for Akwa Ibom State within the Framework of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry”, continues with technical sessions/discussions designed to produce actionable strategies for reliable power supply across the State.

Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially lifted the state of emergency in Rivers State, declaring that peace, stability, and a new spirit of democratic cooperation have returned to the state. The announcement, contained in a statement from the State House, takes effect from midnight today, September 17, 2025, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly set to resume normal duties from Thursday, September 18. President Tinubu explained that while the emergency proclamation was necessary at the time due to what he described as a “total breakdown of public order and safety,” the atmosphere in Rivers had now shifted positively. “I am happy today that, from the intelligence available to me, there is a groundswell of a new spirit of understanding, a robust readiness, and potent enthusiasm on the part of all the stakeholders in Rivers State for an immediate return to democratic governance,” Tinubu said. The President thanked traditional rulers, stakeholders, and the people of Rivers for their support during the emergency period, even as he acknowledged dissenting voices who challenged the proclamation in court. He emphasized that the power to declare a state of emergency was a constitutional tool to protect public order, not a political weapon. Calling for unity and focus ahead, President Tinubu urged Rivers stakeholders to work together in harmony, stressing that democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of violence and political manipulation. He also reminded other state governors and legislators across Nigeria that peace, order, and good governance remain the only pathway to delivering the dividends of democracy to the people. “I therefore do not see why the state of emergency should exist a day longer than the six months I had pronounced at the beginning of it,” the President declared. The decision marks the end of one of the most controversial emergency declarations in recent Nigerian history, as Rivers State now returns to full democratic governance after months of heightened political tension.

When the Akwa Ibom State Government announced disciplinary proceedings against two consultant doctors accused of absenteeism and other infractions of the public service rules, it stirred diverse reactions from members of the public. But for families that have lost loved ones due to situations where doctors were absent, the pain may never assuage. Weeks ago, the public empathised with Ndifreke Amos, whose wails of agony over the avoidable demise of her sister and her sister's newborn at General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene, could not be ignored. That unfortunate incident (an avoidable maternal/neonatal mortality case, as details later revealed) is linked to the absence of the doctor on duty. Barely a fortnight earlier, similar circumstances occurred at General Hospital, Etinan. In both cases, government-employed doctors were said to have been absent at their duty posts at critical moments when their presence would have prevented the loss of life and saved families from agonising experiences. Those deaths were avoidable, as authorities vested with the facts opine. When consultants, in whose care patients are entrusted, are absent, patients in critical condition are left unattended, and lives are lost. Preliminary investigative reports from the Ministry of Health reveal that one of the doctors found wanting, Dr. George Bassey, allegedly took up a full-time appointment at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, without being formally disengaged by the Akwa Ibom State Hospitals Management Board thereby abandoning his duty post and the patients desperately in need of his expertise. His colleague, Dr. UduakAbasi Ita, a Consultant Radiologist, is facing a similar case. Further checks reveal that George Bassey, a Consultant Haematologist, is a beneficiary of the in-service training policy of the State Government. While undergoing the postgraduate training, his full salaries and entitlements were paid consistently by the Akwa Ibom State Government throughout the eight years it lasted, translating to sponsorship by the State Government in line with Public Service Rules, which also require such persons, upon completion of studies, to return to the service of the state at least for the duration of the years spent on such sponsored training. While others had no problems complying with this, Dr. Bassey’s case turned out to be different, as the first sign of his noncompliance was repeated complaints of his alleged truancy and absenteeism from his Medical Superintendent. Despite the Health Commissioner’s intervention in June 2025 by providing specialised equipment such as an Olympus Microscope and a Haematology Analyser which were requested by Dr. Bassey, even when a functional microscope was already in place, the Consultant Haematologist still did not budge. His further complaints of Medical Laboratory Scientists preventing him from working, as well as salary delays, were found to be false and, added to other shortcomings of his, culminated in the issuance of a query to him. But instead of a reply, he tendered a resignation letter, which was not accepted. After that, Dr. George Bassey, the state-sponsored in-service trainee and Consultant Haematologist, became unreachable and incommunicado. However, he resurfaced days ago after being publicly called out for dereliction of duty by the Hon. Commissioner for Health. In a video posted on Facebook, despite acknowledging that he continued receiving salaries while outside the state on training, Dr. Bassey stated that he owes the Akwa Ibom State Government nothing thereby contradicting himself and exhibiting bold ignorance of Public Service Rules. Absenteeism on the part of medical doctors in public service, and other acts anti-ethical to the Hippocratic Oath, are not just breaches of the Public Service Rules but threaten the integrity of the medical profession and the safety of patients. It is on this premise that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, in line with broader health sector reforms of the Umo Eno administration under the ARISE Agenda, has embarked on a mission of restoring discipline in medical practice to prevent further avoidable loss of lives in Akwa Ibom State. When discipline is enforced, trust will be restored. This is important because, in the medical system where a patient’s survival depends on whether a doctor shows up or not, trust is vital. Some facts which have come to light have raised troubling questions about the culture of divided loyalties in the health sector. While doctors seek additional jobs, patients, especially pregnant women and infants, bear the brunt of their absence and sadly have to pay with their lives in extreme cases, such as those of Etinan and Ikot Ekpene. As the state intensifies its disciplinary measures, the unanswered question remains: How many more lives must be lost before absenteeism by medical personnel is fully stamped out? By Ubon Marcus

Gov. Eno Restates Commitment to Free, Inclusive Education at UBEC/UNICEF Enrollment Drive Flag-off in Uyo Akwa Ibom State governor, Pst. Umo Bassey Eno (PhD), has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to ensure that no child in the State is left out of school, declaring that “neither the circumstance of one’s birth nor economic status should foreclose a child’s legitimate right to quality education”. Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, during the flag-off of the 2025/2026 South-South Regional Enrollment Drive and Campaign to Reduce Out-of-School Children (OOSC), held on Thursday, 4th September, 2025, at Christ the King Model Primary School, Uyo, the Governor described education as a life-changing tool capable of lifting children out of poverty and securing the state’s future. Governor Eno was full of praises to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the initiative and commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for their collaboration in tackling the menace of out-of-school children, describing the effort as critical to Nigeria’s growth and to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (inclusive and equitable quality education for all). “Here in Akwa Ibom State, we have intentionally approached the issue of out-of-school children holistically. That is why we have sustained the free education policy from primary to secondary level, constructed model schools with modern facilities, provided free books, uniforms and shoes, retrained our teachers, and recruited hundreds of new ones equipped with modern teaching techniques." He further noted that the initiative had boosted school enrollment in the State within two years, highlighting ongoing construction of 31 model schools across all local government areas, with 12 already completed and 19 at various stages of execution, alongside the establishment of world-class model secondary schools across the three senatorial districts in the State. The event, organized by UBEC in collaboration with UNICEF, marked the first regional flag-off of the campaign in the South-South zone. It brought together education stakeholders, traditional leaders, unions, and civil society representatives, all lending their voices to the urgent call for children’s enrollment, retention, and completion of basic education. Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Rt. Hon. Anietie Etuk, expressed his excitement for the organizers bringing the initiative to Akwa Ibom State. He thanked them for making the state their destination of choice and promised to push the enrollment drive as part of the strategies towards reducing Out-of-school children in the State. In her goodwill message, Nneka, a representative of UNICEF, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting governments across Nigeria in ensuring that every child enrolls, remains, completes, and successfully transits within the education system. Additionally, UBEC’s Secretary, Aisha Garba, represented by Barr. Ibrahim Gold, stressed that one of the commission’s statutory responsibilities under the UBE Act 2024 is to ensure that all categories of children, regardless of socio-economic status, are given access to quality education. She explained that UBEC and UNICEF had jointly developed a Framework of Action on Out-of-School Children, serving as a roadmap for innovative enrollment campaigns, best practices, and state-led interventions. Other stakeholders in their separate goodwill messages during the event, raised concerns and made appeals. Amongst them, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) chairman, applauded the campaign but called for more recruitment of teachers alongside enrollment efforts. National Committee of School-Based Management chairman, urged state governments to deepen investments in education. Akwa Ibom State Secondary Education Board Chairperson, Ekaette Okon, charged teachers to take personal responsibility for molding children. Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Technical School Board, Godwin Udom, pointed to poverty, culture, and environment as major drivers of out-of-school children, noting that the state government was tackling these issues. Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, appealed to the Federal Government to pay special attention to rural schools and urged teachers to instill discipline, warning that poorly trained children could become societal menaces. National Child Literacy Coordinator, emphasized the need to curb loitering and hawking during school hours while advocating for functional vocational centers. The Paramount Ruler of Uyo, represented by the Village Head of Uyo, encouraged traditional leaders to sensitize communities through town criers and called for the reintroduction of school feeding to boost enrollment UBEC Member, Mallam Adamu, expressed gratitude to Governor Eno for building model schools across local governments, while stressing that enrollment drives were only a means to the greater end of achieving quality education for all. Highpoint of the event was the distribution of free school uniforms, bags, and books to newly enrolled pupils as part of efforts to encourage enrollment and retention, and a strong directive that no school in Akwa Ibom should collect money from children registering for admission. Any Head Teacher found culpable, officials warned, would be sanctioned and demoted back to classroom teaching. With over 20 million out-of-school children nationwide, the UBEC/UNICEF initiative launched in Uyo for the South-South, aims to drastically reduce the numbers by combining Federal policy with State-led innovations and community-driven advocacy.

In a move to embolden the citizens’ empowerment programme of the State, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced a ₦31 billion empowerment scheme for 2026, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive development and equal opportunity for all citizens and residents. Speaking today , Sunday August 31st at the closing ceremony of the three-day Convention of the All Nations Christian Ministry International in Eket, themed “They’re Men, Not God”, the Governor disclosed that each of the 31 local government areas will access the sum of ₦1 billion for direct citizens’ empowerment, business support, and grants. He explained that the scheme would be implemented through structured programmes such as Ibom LED, Dakkada Skills Acquisition and other interventions, with beneficiaries to be digitally harvested through dedicated portals to ensure transparency and accountability. He noted that the intervention will been adequately provided for in the 2026 People’s Budget of the State, underscoring his administration’s resolve to institutionalize empowerment programmes. Governor Eno further announced that 3,000 upcoming employment opportunities in the State Civil Service will be filled strictly on merit, through computer-based tests (CBT). He stressed that this approach was designed to give children of less privileged families a fair chance to serve and succeed, regardless of their background. “We must provide a level ground for all to compete, irrespective of family background or political affiliation,” he declared to thunderous applause. On the recent debates about empowerment for political support groups, the Governor clarified that while members of such groups are entitled to benefit as citizens, the State cannot directly fund political associations. He emphasized that his administration is determined to provide system-driven opportunities for all Akwa Ibomites through budgeted programmes and institutional structures. Governor Eno also used the occasion to caution young people against cultism, urging them instead to embrace economically viable ventures. In a major agricultural breakthrough, he unveiled plans for a Tree Crops Revolution, which will begin with the distribution of one million improved seedlings of economic trees to smallholder farmers across the State. According to him, government will serve as an off-taker to guarantee markets for farmers, while the State Agricultural Committee and extension workers will drive the process through enumeration and monitoring. The convention, which drew thousands of worshippers, featured renowned guest speakers such as Rev. Simeon Afolabi, Bishop (Mrs.) Enobong Essien, Lady Apostle Helen Ukpabio, Rev. Dr. Godwin Gboyega Shitta, Rev. Dr. Godwin Amaowoh and Pastor Ndaeyo Udomfuk. The event climaxed with prayers for the State, worship sessions, and thanksgiving for the visible transformation taking place under the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno’s administration.

The recent release of the Akwa Ibom State empowerment beneficiaries list by His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, under the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda, has sparked discussions across the state. Some political support group leaders have voiced concerns on social media, claiming that funds have neither been released nor received by their group members. However, it is important to clarify the process and set the records straight for public understanding. Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to transparency led to the creation of the ARISE Portal, a platform for support group leaders to register their members for government empowerment programmes. The registration aims to ensure direct and equitable access to the various grants, equipment, and job opportunities provided by the government without favoritism or duplication. The policy that one individual cannot benefit twice was made clear, supported by the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) to guarantee fairness and broaden the impact. Some group leaders, seeking to maximize their numbers, registered non-members including individuals who had already benefited from other programmes like Ibom-led, SME grants, and market grants. As someone who has personally received a grant from the state through the Ibom-LED before later being listed with another group (not as a genuine member, but to make up numbers), I can attest that the records published in the government’s official list are accurate. The only amount recorded for the said group was from my earlier benefit from Ibom-led which confirms the government’s transparency in publishing the beneficiary list. For the avoidance of doubt, my testimony comes as an ordinary citizen and beneficiary, not as an aid or affiliate of the Governor or his office. The aim is simply to present the facts and support open governance in Akwa Ibom State. Miss Bassey is a beneficiary of the Governor’s business support grant

The Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI) has commenced registration of members in Akwa Ibom State to facilitate access to the Federal Government’s ₦75 billion Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) intervention fund. NASSI President, Dr. Solomon Vongfa, disclosed this on Friday, August 9, during a Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Roundtable discussion held at the Ibom E-Library, Uyo. He emphasized that proper registration with the association and compliance with financial requirements were mandatory for beneficiaries. “Our team has fully commenced the registration of members in Akwa Ibom State because you must be duly registered with NASSI and also own an account with Ibom FADAMA to access the funds. Applicants must present bank statements, a guarantor, and comply with all stipulated terms and conditions,” Vongfa stated. NASSI Director, Engr. Ifeanyi Oputa, urged entrepreneurs in the state to seize the opportunity, stressing that the intervention fund was designed to cushion business challenges and stimulate economic growth. “The opportunity is now here. We must put all hands on deck to make it work because government has provided support, but we must collectively strive to maximize it,” he said. A representative of the Bank of Industry (BOI), Mr. Tsah Abdul, clarified that applicants must not be indebted to any commercial bank and must present a guarantor before accessing the loan. “The ₦75 billion Federal Government MSME intervention funds are available, but you must meet the requirements. Successful applicants will enjoy a three-month moratorium before repayment begins, with ₦150,000 due monthly over three years,” Abdul explained. Similarly, Mrs. Comfort Ituh, Managing Director of Ibom FADAMA, reminded participants that the intervention was a loan and not a grant. “As a bank, we are responsible for ensuring recovery of the funds and timely repayment to government coffers,” she stressed. In his remarks, the Director-General of NASSI, Dr. Solomon Vongfa, commended Governor Umo Eno for his bold strides in human capital development and his administration’s huge investments in MSME growth, describing Akwa Ibom as a model state in enterprise development. “Governor Umo Eno’s vision through the Arise Agenda has made Akwa Ibom a shining example of how government can deliberately empower small businesses. His continuous investment in skills training, entrepreneurship support, and financial access has positioned the state as a hub for MSME-driven growth in Nigeria,” Vongfa said. In her remark, the SA to the Governor on Entrepreneurial Development, Mrs. Meflyn Anwana, expressed appreciation to NASSI’s leadership for making Akwa Ibom the pilot state for the scheme. “The Federal Government’s initiative aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda in empowering small-scale businesses as a vital sector of our economy. Through Ibom LED, Governor Umo Eno has consistently trained and supported over 2,000 entrepreneurs and counting. He has empowered entrepreneurs in the rural areas across a broad spectrum of entrepreneurial and vocational engagements. This intervention will further strengthen the efforts of the government in this sector while stimulating whole sectors and subgroups and ultimately optimizing value chain operations and sectoral development while tapping latent entrepreneurial capacities of MSMEs in the state,” she affirmed. Entrepreneurship in Nigeria remains a cornerstone of national economic resilience, with MSMEs contributing over 48 percent of GDP and employing more than 84 percent of the country’s workforce. Despite challenges such as limited access to finance, infrastructure deficits, and multiple taxation, MSMEs continue to drive innovation and provide livelihoods across urban and rural communities. The ₦75 billion intervention fund comes at a time when many small businesses are grappling with inflationary pressures, high energy costs, and access-to-market barriers. Stakeholders believe that structured funding, such as the one now available through NASSI in Akwa Ibom, is critical to scaling businesses and unlocking Nigeria’s full entrepreneurial potential. Analysts forecast that Nigeria’s MSME sector will witness sustained growth over the next five years, driven by agribusiness expansion in cassava, palm oil, fisheries, and agro-processing; technology and digital services such as fintech, e-commerce, and ICT; light manufacturing and processing including soap making, food processing, textiles, and packaging; and creative and vocational industries such as fashion, hospitality, film, and entertainment, which continue to provide high-growth opportunities for youth. For Akwa Ibom specifically, Governor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda has placed entrepreneurship at the heart of development, prioritizing training, access to finance, and market linkages. With deliberate partnerships through platforms like NASSI, Ibom LED, and Ibom FADAMA, the state is forecasted to emerge as a leader in MSME development, setting a model for other states. The commencement of NASSI’s membership registration in Akwa Ibom signals a major step in democratizing access to the Federal Government’s ₦75 billion MSME intervention fund. By tying national support to state-level capacity building, the initiative not only strengthens small businesses but also underlines Akwa Ibom’s role as a pilot state in Nigeria’s entrepreneurial transformation. As Nigeria faces economic headwinds, the future of growth lies in the productivity of its entrepreneurs. With Governor Umo Eno’s continued investments and the Federal Government’s renewed support, Akwa Ibom entrepreneurs are positioned not only to benefit from immediate funding but to lead in shaping the next wave of sectoral and inclusive growth across the nation. The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, PhD, confirmed the development during the Town Square Meeting and Empowerment Series for Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency held at the Ikono Local Government Council Headquarters on Thursday. Expressing delight over the move, Governor Eno commended the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for playing a pivotal role in making the conversion possible, describing it as a significant milestone in expanding access to quality tertiary education and agricultural research in the state. “I am happy that through the instrumentality of the Senate President, the present campus of the University was going to become a Federal University of Agriculture,” Governor Eno said. The Governor also addressed the demand for a new AKSU campus within Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, stating that such an initiative will depend on formal endorsement by the constituency’s elders and stakeholders. “I intend to meet the needs of the Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency for the establishment of a new campus of Akwa Ibom State University if I see the request endorsed by the known stakeholders of Ikono,” he added. A Salute to Assam Abia’s Misplaced Genius By Clement Warrie One must begin by conceding a painful truth: Assam Abia is clearly a man of misplaced genius. His recent article; Free Food in Akwa Ibom: A Misplaced Priority," builds unfortunate economic castles in the sky while willfully ignoring human suffering below. What a genius! Mr Abia who has never missed a meal in his life has clearly outdone himself. His crafty and inexplicable preoccupation with the Chinese and the prospect of the rolling mill is clearly mischievous. According to his calculations, the state should rather wait on hope for their return while neglecting the need of half a million Akwa Ibom vulnerable families. Mr Abia gets creative about governance being about creating opportunities in times of peace and distributing handouts: This is a classic definition of being smart by half. One is forced to enquire: does peace magically erase poverty or market failures? Or is it that because Akwa Ibom is not currently a war zone, its citizens who are experiencing food insecurity are lazy people doomed to be corrupted by free food? In a sheer display of blissful ignorance, Mr Abia pretends to forget hunger rages in many homes across the country. This is not the fault of the government of Akwa Ibom state. But Abia insists aid should be withheld for the vulnerable to tighten their belts. His hypothesis to the matter is to “starve the present to feed the future “ But Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen, a fearless realist, famously argued that hunger in the land are political failures, often occurring not from lack of food but lack of accountability to those needing food. Abia is a rambler who finds an unwary voice in Obong Nathaniel Akpan, a fictional rice farmer in Ibiono Ibom, who rightly calls for agricultural investment to which the government of Governor Umo Eno, through his ARISE agenda on agriculture and food sufficiency, has long prioritized. Yet, Mr. Abia, with characteristic impatience for human frailty, seems to forget or ignore what a lot of households similar to the 477,797 households could go through while the transition takes effect. The irony peaks when Abia jabbed that Governance is not about sharing food but about building a future where no citizen needs government rice to survive. But one need not be smart to see what he did there. A beautiful sentiment, one that everyone desires. Except that the road to that eldorado is fraught with unintended spurs, requiring major fixes. Choosing to alleviate the suffering of people today so they are alive and nourished to participate in building a glorious future is unfortunately branded by Abia as a waste of time. One can only hope, albeit with cautious optimism, the heights Abia’s intellect could reach if liberated from the constraints of partisan sniping. Imagine if that energy were channeled into proper use rather than deployed in needless brinkmanship to appear woke while mischievously undermining the desperate needs of the vulnerable population of Akwa Ibom state.
