A young Nigerian woman has narrated before a Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, how she was lured into cybercrime and online romance scams while searching for a legitimate job.

The testimony came during the trial of Ling Yang (a.k.a Shoa Ming), a Chinese national and alleged member of a 792-member cybercrime syndicate. Yang, alongside Genting International Co. Limited, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for cyberterrorism, internet fraud, and financial scams.

How It Started
The witness, Jacob Lilian, explained that she found a job listing in a WhatsApp group advertising a customer service position at Genting International Co. Limited, located at No. 7 Oyin Jolayemi Street, Lagos.

Upon arriving at the company, she was not asked for any CV, credentials, or documentation. Instead, she was directed to sit in front of a computer for a typing test. After the test, she was told to improve her speed and was immediately hired.

She revealed that she was given no employment letter or official contract, but the company provided her with accommodation on Lagos Island.

How She Was Trapped in the Scam
According to her testimony, she was soon given a script to read, which had a fake name "Alani Thomas."

Her job was to use this false identity and chat with European victims, gaining their trust before handing them over to the company's fraud ring.

She explained,

“By the third day of chatting, once the target was at ease with me, I would be told to stop responding. The employers would then take over the conversation and scam them.”

She disclosed that employees were monitored constantly, with strict security preventing them from leaving the office freely. They were escorted back and forth between their office and accommodation, and had to submit their phones daily before starting work.

Her salary was ₦250,000 per month, and she soon realized she had been trapped in a scam operation.

Her Escape & EFCC’s Intervention
Fearing the consequences of being involved in criminal activity, she attempted to resign, but the company refused to let her leave.

She described her arrest by the EFCC during their "Eagle Flush Operation" on December 10, 2024, as a "saving grace."

The Court’s Decision
Ling Yang is facing four charges related to cybercrime and fraud. One of the charges states:

“That you, LING YANG A.K.A. SHAO MING, sometime in December 2024 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to gain a financial advantage for your employer, fraudulently impersonated one Amity by holding yourself out as such, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 22 (2) (b) of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015.”

Yang has pleaded guilty to all charges, and the trial continues.

The presiding judge, Justice D.I. Dipeolu, has adjourned the case to April 11, 2025, for further hearings.
