AFC Bournemouth player tests positive for Coronavirus 

An unnamed player from the AFC Bournemouth football club has tested positive for coronavirus, this was announced by the  Premier League club on Sunday.

The club also added that, the identity of the player will not be disclosed due to "medical confidentiality" and that he has been placed under self-isolate for seven days.

According to a statement released by Bournemouth, "Following strict adherence to the Premier League's return to training regulations, the club's training ground remains a safe working environment for players and backroom staff, who will continue to be tested for Covid-19 twice per week".

Although, all 92 remaining fixtures will be completed as affirmed by officials, with Richard Masters, the Premier League chief executive saying that, they were "as confident as we can be" about restarting next month.

Many Premier League players which includes Watford captain Troy Deeney and Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante, still have concerns about returning next month.

And also at Watford, Mariappa and two members staff have tested positive.

After a second batch of testing, it has been reported that two players from different Premier League clubs have tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to reports, eight positive tests for the virus have been confirmed from England’s top-flight clubs since players returned to limited group training on Tuesday.

“The Premier League can today confirm that on Tuesday 19 May, Thursday 21 May and Friday 22 May, 996 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19. Of these, two have tested positive from two clubs,” the statement said.

“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

“Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.”

The Premier League also added that, it would not be providing any details of the two new positive tests.

According to the initial round of testing done on 17-18 May, on a total of 748 players and club staff, Watford’s Adrian Mariappa and two members of the club’s non-playing staff and which also includes Ian Woan, Burnley assistant manager, were among six positive tests.

All mentioned players are still in their seven-day isolation.

according to manager Nigel Pearson, two other Watford players are also self-isolating after coming into close contact with people who tested positive.

No matches have been played in the Premier League since March, but the government has given the green light for elite sport to resume from 1 June, including the top-flight football.

The Premier League’s “Project Restart” hopes to resume action in June, although no date has been fixed.

Another round of tests are scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday. All 20 clubs will hold a meeting on Wednesday to decide whether they can move to phase two of the restart and allow full-contact training.

Chief executive Richard Masters said on Friday the Premier League is “as confident as we can be” about a resumption of the top flight and that the remaining 92 games would be completed.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced on Monday that each one its competitions, including Serie A suspended until 14 June.

The Lega Serie A had hoped for a return on 13 June but the FIGC has pushed back the date in line with a government decree that each one sports competitions be suspended until next month.

The FIGC said the selection was made “pending any longer … decision by the authorities”, suggesting the likelihood of a restart on 13 June might still exist.

The Italian season has been on hold since 9 March amid the pandemic which has killed quite 32 000 people in Italy at the time this text was published.

But Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Saturday said he needed “more guarantees” before the green light could finally tend for football to resume.

Chelsea and England winger Callum Hudson-Odoi was arrested at the weekend after police skilled a report of an “unwell woman”, British media reported on Monday.

Police officers and an ambulance attended Hudson-Odoi’s London range in the first hours of Sunday.


The 19-year-old was arrested and brought into custody before being released and bailed.

“Police and London ambulance service were called at 03:53hrs on Sunday, 17 May to a report of an unwell woman,” a police spokesman said, adding that the lady was taken to hospital.

The reports said Hudson-Odoi was in breach of coronavirus lockdown guidelines.

Chelsea have declined to comment, consistent with the reports.

Hudson-Odoi made a full recovery after becoming the primary Premier League player to check positive for Covid-19 in March.

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, on Thursday, announced that 20 confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) patients are discharged.

This brings the entire number of discharged patients within the state to 34.

Obaseki, who made the announcement via his official twitter handle, said the patients were discharged after they tested negative twice.

“We have discharged 20 persons from our COVID-19 isolation facilities, 17 are from Stella Obasanjo Hospital, one from UBTH and two from Irrua Specialist Hospital,’’ the governor twitted.

“A patient, who reported late for treatment, was lost to the virus,’’ he governor added.

The press agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Edo has recorded 89 confirmed cases, with 50 active cases, 34 discharged and five deaths.

According to the latest figures released by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday night, Four persons have again tested positive for COVID-19 in Oyo State

TribeNg reports that the governor of Oyo state, Gov Seyi Makinde, through his twitter handle, announced that the new cases had brought the number of cases in the state to 73.

Governor Makinde urged people who have come in contact with people showing symptoms of COVID-19, cough, fever, tiredness, body ache and shortness of breath and those with respiratory disease symptoms, to come forward and register for a test.

The governor further instructed residents to call the emergency operations centre as soon as travellers from other states are seen in their communities.

Troops of the Nigerian Army attached to Sector 1, Operation Lafiya Dole, have shot dead nine Boko Haram terrorists during an ambush staged for the insurgents along the Mainok-Jakana Road in the Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.

The army said the ambush, which was carried out on Wednesday about 6pm, resulted in a firefight, adding that two soldiers were injured.

In a release, the acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col Sagir Musa, said two gun trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns were also captured by troops, and exploitation of the area was ongoing.

He said, “Troops of Sector 1 have successfully staged an ambush at identified Boko Haram terrorists crossing point at Mainok-Jakana axis in Kaga LGA.

“So far, nine Boko Haram terrorists lost their lives; two gun trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns have been captured and exploitation is ongoing by the troops. Two soldiers are slightly wounded. The situation in the area has been normalised.”

The Sahel state of Niger, which has been battling a bloody jihadist insurgency, said Wednesday around 75 Boko Haram soldiers killed in southeast Niger and in neighbouring Nigeria.

Twenty-five “terrorists” were killed on Monday south of Diffa, the most city in southeast Niger, while “about 50… were neutralised” an equivalent day on Nigerian soil within the Lake Chad region, in two operations by a regional anti-jihadist force, the defence ministry said during a statement.

The figures couldn’t be verified independently.

On Monday, troops from Niger’s contingent within the regional force administered “aggressive reconnaissance” on the banks of the Komadougou river and clashed with Boko Haram fighters at a neighborhood 74 kilometres (45 miles) south of Diffa, the ministry said.

“All the terrorist organization ,” comprising 25 combatants, was killed, it said, adding that two soldiers were lightly injured.

A vehicle, four motorbikes, weapons, ammunitions and various material “for military use” were seized, the statement said.

The same day, around 50 “enemy elements” were “neutralised” in coalition air strikes and artillery bombardment of Tombon-Fulani, an island within the marshy Lake Chad region in northeastern Nigeria, the defence ministry added.

“Shelters and logistical dumps” were also destroyed, it said.

Jihadists administered a serious attack against a Nigerien military camp outside Diffa on May 3, killing two soldiers and wounding three others, consistent with the govt .
