Suspected militia men yesterday attacked Rafin Kada town, a Jukun community in Taraba State and killed many people. Daily Trust gathered that the militia men crossed from neighbouring Benue State and killed many people and set many houses ablaze.

They also attacked the vehicle of Wukari Local Government chairman and another vehicle conveying some soldiers to Rafin Kada, following distress calls sent to them. It was further gathered that some Jukun youths from Wukari going to confront the attackers were ambushed and killed by the suspected militia at a forest. Rafin Kada is the third Jukun town to be attacked by suspected militia in one week and several people killed.

The chairman of Wukari Local Government, Mr Adi Daniel, said the militia men in large numbers launched an attack on the community early Tuesday. He said some people were killed and about 32 houses burnt down by the attackers. The spokesman of the state police command, David Misal confirmed that some armed militia crossed from Benue State and attacked a Jukun community near Wukari, killed one person and burnt some houses.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, yesterday made a case for a total but gradual removal of subsidy on oil products and electricity tariff. The emir, who was speaking at the 3rd National Treasury Workshop in Kano, said government must take a bold, but difficult decision of addressing the problem of these two sectors for the country’s economy to flourish.

“100 per cent of what we earned in the petroleum sector went out to import petrol. You are treasurers, is this sustainable? The country will be bankrupted and we are heading to bankruptcy,” the traditional ruler said. The emir asked what was so crucial about petroleum products that the nation had to sacrifice education, healthcare and infrastructure just to have “cheap petrol” and risk the financial stability of the country.

“It is a difficult decision but if the president wants to deal with poverty, he has to deal with this. And you have to tell Nigerians that they have to be ready, if the international price of oil goes up, people must be ready to pay more and if it goes down people will benefit. We have to be responsive to what happens everywhere,” he added.

“Now we have this situation where people need to be told the truth because people don’t understand that N1.5 trillion into fuel subsidy is N1.5tr out of education, healthcare and infrastructure and that is why we have so many children out of school and that is why we have problem of malnutrition. And where are you going to get the money to solve these problems if all the money is going into petroleum sector?” the emir queried.

The emir said the consumption of power and petroleum products are private individual decisions and government could not fight poverty by subsidizing these products. “As treasurers, you are not just accounting money and keeping it, you are managing it and your duty is to tell the president, Sir look at these numbers, we cannot afford this, and if we continue spending billions on fuel subsidy, spending hundreds of billions on power subsidy this country will go bankrupt.

“And I am hoping that, again what I have said is simple honest contribution to you, so that you can begin to push through, even though it is difficult.” The emir also said, “Nigeria is the only country whose balance sheet does not benefit from an increase in the price of oil, and this does not start with this government, it has been on for 20, 30 years. Today you have tension between America and Iran the price is going up, every oil producing country is going to be happy because it is going to earn more.

But in Nigeria, we are going to earn more and we turn round and spend what we earned on importing petroleum products.” Earlier in his opening remarks, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, said the objective of the workshop was to promote accountability and transparency in all facets of the nation’s finance and management architecture. “It is expected that participants should appreciate that accountability and transparency remain major watchwords for prudent financial management practices and are therefore, major prerequisites for economic growth and development,” he said.

In his goodwill message, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, said the best strategy for fighting corruption was to mobilize everybody to take part, as no one had the monopoly of knowledge. He charged the participants of the workshop to take lead in the fight against corruption being critical stakeholders in the financial sector.

Some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are currently protesting against Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Igbere TV can report.

Igbere TV reports that the protest currently taking place in Abuja, is being co-ordinated by groups loyal to President Buhari, including members of the Buhari Media Organization (BMO).

Our correspondent monitoring the development reports that members of the group are calling for Kyari’s removal, accusing him of running the presidency as a cabal.

Igbere TV reports that the protesters were armed with placards of various inscriptions including: “No more cabal, no more intimidation, PMB remains our sole leader”, “We need fresh ideas not recycling men and women who have spent over 40 years in government”, “Hardwork must be rewarded”, etc.

Already, some personal aides of the Presidency and staunch supporters of the ruling party have taken the protest to Twitter under the hash tag #AbbaKyariMustGo!

Recall that the group held similar demonstration in protest against the appointment of some personal aides of Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan.

They labeled such persons as saboteurs, having linked them to ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They insisted that the opposition cannot “reap” where they did not sow, adding that such appointments should instead favour members of the APC and not individuals who fought against the “Next Level” agenda.

Igbere TV reports that the protest led to the sack of Festus Adedayo as Media Adviser to Lawan, barely 48 hours after his appointment. Just yesterday, Olu Onemola, an ex-aide to Saraki resigned his reappointment as Special Assistant (New Media) to Ahmad Lawan.

A 56-year-old man, Rasaki Balogun and his girlfriend were found dead in his home at number 16 Taiwo Oke Victory Estate in Ejigbo, Lagos state on Thursday June 20th.



A statement released by the command's Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, today June 24th, says on June 20th, one Akorede Balogun said to be the wife of the deceased, reported at Iba Police Station that her husband was found dead with his mistress in his sitting room.



A team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer Ejigbo visited the scene. Corpses of the man and his mistress were found in the pool of their blood with the woman laying on a knife. The man is said to be living alone in the house while his family lives in a different place.



Bala said the identity of the mistress is yet to be established as he was said to have picked her up about two days to the incident from unknown location.



The Crime scene was sealed off for forensic analysis while the corpses were evacuated to Hospital for autopsy.



Homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba have taken over the case on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu.



Investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding their death.

There was a mild drama at the National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal in Akwa Ibom State when Counsel to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Solomon Umoh, SAN tried unsuccessfully to prevent a witness, Mr. Godwin Afangideh, from reading the result from a document presented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The document was an exhibit presented by INEC in a petition filed by Senator Godswill Akpabio of the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging the declaration of Christopher Ekpenyong (PDP) as the Senator for Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.

Reading from the document given to him by Counsel to PDP, the witness, Mr Afangide said "My Lord, even from this document APC scored a total votes of 61,329 and PDP scored 9,050 in Essien Udim Local Government Area and it is recorded here."

Mr. Umoh, SAN had attempted to shout down the witness from reading that part of the document.

Mr. Afangide had earlier tendered results collated from Wards across the Local Government Area as given to him by the party agents, which clearly showed that Senator Akpabio had won the election in his own Local Government Area with a wide margin.

The witness expressed surprise at the voters' register tendered in court and said it was different from the one that was used on election day. He confirmed that he had voted along with his family members.

According to Mr. Afangide the elections in Essien Udim Local Government Area were very peaceful as attested to by security agencies, local and foreign observers.

Two Police Officers, the Area Commander, Ikot Ekpene Area Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Naziru Bello Kankarofi and the Divisional Police Officer, Essien Udim Local Government, Superintendent of Police, Mr. Samuel Isiek, on subpoena tendered situation reports on the conduct of the National Assembly elections.

The reports were duly admitted as exhibits despite the initial objections of Counsel to the PDP, Mr. Umoh, SAN, Counsel to the Respondents, Chief Kanu Agabi and Counsel to INEC, Mr. Robert Emukpoeruo. They reserved their objections till final addresses.

Another Witness, Dr. Chris Akpan who was a Ward Collation Agent told the Tribunal that the results that were declared by INEC in Uyo did not reflect collated results from the Units and Wards of the Local Government Area.

Reacting to suggestions by the Counsel to INEC that results from the Local Government Area of Senator Akpabio were cancelled because of violence, the witnesses expressed surprise and said they were hearing of violence for the first time at the Tribunal.

Senator Akpabio had so far called 14 witnesses mostly Ward Agents who have tendered duly collated results. Results so far tendered showed he had led his opponent with a wide margin before INEC cancelled the results in Uyo.

Heavy explosion today rocked Komkom, Izuoma in oyigbo LGA of Rivers State.

Igbere TV gathered that the explosion was as a result of pipeline vandalism.

According to an eyewitness who spoke with Igbere TV correspondent, many people were burnt alive.

He said : "The residence of komkom, Izuoma in oyigbo LGA experienced partial earthquake and darkness today's morning between the hour of 8am. 22nd June 2019. Souls lost in pipeline fire outbreak.... SAY NO 2 CRIME..."

· Watch out for the expiry dates: The steps to check the expiry date are very simple and basic. The expiry of LPG cylinder can be found on one of the metal strips that connect the body of the cylinder to top ring (handle). It is mentioned on the inner side of the strip. The strip has any of the alphabets from A to D painted on it along with a number. Decoding the expiry date is simple. The alphabet represents the month it expires while the number indicates the year. A year is divided into four quarters :

A – during cylinder change-over).
* Ensure the valve is protected by a valve cap or collar, or that the valve has been designed to withstand impact if the cylinder is dropped.
* Store gas cylinders in a dry, safe place on a flat surface in the open air. If this is not reasonably practicable, store in an adequately ventilated building or part of a building specifically reserved for this purpose.

* Cylinders containing flammable gas should not be stored in part of a building used for other purposes.
* Protect gas cylinders from external heat sources that may adversely affect their mechanical integrity.
* Gas cylinders should be stored away from sources of ignition and other flammable materials.
