The Supreme Court of Nigeria today discharged the conviction handed Bode George a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain earlier jailed for corruption by a Lagos High Court. The court discharged and acquited Mr. George claiming that prosecutors at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had no evidence of Mr. George’s intention to commit fraud at the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) where as chairman of the NPA board he was caught presiding over a contract bazaar the bled the nation of Nigeria. A panel of judges headed by a controversial judge, John Afolabi Fabiyi JSC, ruled that the charges of “contract splitting” upon which Mr. George was convicted is unknown to law. The pattern of today’s quashing of George’s conviction was similar to that of a Lagos Court of Appeal ruling which similarly quashed a death sentence conviction of Major Hamza Al Mustapha’s for the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola in 1996 Source: www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/supreme-court-discharges-pdp-chieftain-bode-george-corruption-conviction/ |
Coaches Daniel Amokachi and Ike Shorunmu have rated highly the three U17 stars in training camp preparatory to next year’s CHAN. Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi and goalkeeper Dele Alampasu have been drafted from the history-making team to the 2013 FIFA World Cup in the UAE. “All the players including the young Eaglets have been tremendous at training sessions and I personally will not be surprised if they make the final squad for the CHAN tournament, but we will have to wait for our boss to have a look at them and make a final decision,” said assistant coach Amokachi. Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, Ike Shorunmu, said he has been very impressed with the team’s two new goalkeepers, Isah Danladi of Sharks and Alampasu. “They have been wonderful along with Dan Akpeyi and Chigozie Agbim, they can even challenge for World Cup places, but it might be too early in the day, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for now,” said the former Nigeria World Cup star. Amokachi said they are starting from the scratch with players for the CHAN as a good number of them has moved abroad. “About 80 per cent of the players we started with if not more have gone, but this new set is giving us hope that Nigeria is always blessed with talented footballers,” he said. Year 2012 was replete with an array of medical and scientific breakthroughs. From January through December, series of world-changing innovations were recorded across the world. However, one of the biggest and most sensational breakthroughs of the year involved Emily Whitehead, a 7-year-old girl, whose acute leukaemia (blood cancer) was effectively “cured” by HIV. Emily who had been battling the potentially fatal lymphoblastic leukaemia since May 2010, recovered dramatically after the HIV-procured antidote proved that scientists can successfully use HIV to kill cancer. After series of chemotherapy failed to work, Emily underwent a new experimental gene therapy pioneered by the University of Pennsylvania to eradicate blood cancers. The procedure involved “tricking” Emily’s immune system into fighting the cancer In the experimental treatment, a disabled form of HIV was used to essentially rewrite her T-cells to be programmed to attack B-cells, which become malignant when suffering from leukaemia. Researchers say the therapy is personalized using each patient’s immune system’s “T cells.” Three weeks after the infusion in April, Emily was completely free of the leukaemia that had been on the verge of killing her. Reports say she is recovering well at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Today, in the war against cancer, Emily is at the forefront. The therapy, culminating 20 years of research, involves genetically engineering T cells – the immune system’s big guns – to attack B cells, the blood component that turns malignant in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Although T cell therapy can have catastrophic side effects, doctors say it pointed the way to an antidote or the deadly blood cancer. But the novel therapy that has tamed terminal leukaemia in seven of the first 10 patients might be deemed too risky for further testing. There are concerns that interfering with the immune system is too risky. Of the 10, only two patients have not gotten better on the T cell therapy, even though all had stopped responding to conventional treatments. Four patients have had a complete response – their leukaemia was eradicated – with the longest so far lasting 28 months. In four other patients, leukemia diminished dramatically. The research team, led by gene-therapy pioneer Carl June, is optimistic about the outcomes of the study which have been so stunning the world has noticed Source http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/12/2012-scientists-cure-leukaemia-with-hiv/ |
