Hamas has responded to the US ceasefire proposals by accepting them in part but seeking further negotiations on a number of key points.

In a statement the movement said it agreed "to release all Israeli prisoners, both living and dead, according to the exchange formula contained in President Trump's proposal" - if field conditions for the exchanges were met.

But it appears to suggest it is seeking further negotiation on other issues regarding the future of the Gaza Strip and the rights of the Palestinian people saying that they are still being discussed.

The announcement comes hours after US President Donald Trump gave Hamas a deadline of 18:00 Washington time (22:00 GMT) on Sunday to accept a US peace plan for Gaza or face "all hell".


The peace plan proposes an immediate end to fighting and the release within 72 hours of 20 living Israeli hostages held by Hamas - as well as the remains of hostages thought to be dead - in exchange for hundreds of detained Gazans.

In a statement, Hamas said it also "renews its agreement to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian body of independents (technocrats), based on Palestinian national consensus and Arab and Islamic support."

But it added that the part of the proposals dealing with the future of Gaza and the rights of Palestinian people was still being discussed "within a national framework".

Earlier on Friday, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform: "If this [b]LAST CHANCE [/b]agreement is not reached, all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas. THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER," [/b]Trump wrote in the Truth Social post.

Republicans and Democrats point fingers as shutdown comes into effect

As the US federal government shutdown started an hour ago, members of both parties are laying the blame on one another.


From the Democrats:

Congressman Bill Foster issues a statement saying Republicans bear responsibility for the shutdown, given they control the House, the Senate and the White house. Families across the country will "continue to pay the price" unless the Republicans come to the table, he adds.

Representative Joe Morelle says he's "deeply frustrated", and the shutdown was a direct result of "a brutal and incompetant administration"

California Governor Gavin Newsom shares on X a photo of Trump in his office, calling the president a "very weak man who can't even do stairs"

And on the Republicans' side:

The Republican Conference in the US House of Representatives shares on X a video of lights in the Capitol Building turning out, saying the Democrats are "putting illegal aliens first and hurting hardworking Americans in the process"

Representative Chuck Fleischmann says that Democrats have "officially shut down our government", and "hardworking taxpayers will have to pay the bill"

Fellow Representative Dusty Johnson says "shutdowns are stupid", adding that Democrats are "putting American workers' paychecks at risk"



Federal furlough payments could cost $400m a day - official estimates



A letter issued by the director of the Congressional budget office prior to the shutdown has given more details over the potential financial implications.

In the letter from Phillip Swagel, the office estimates 750,000 federal employees could be furloughed each day, with a total daily cost of around $400m (£297m).

It adds that this projected number of furloughed employees could vary daily, as some agencies might furlough more employees the longer the shutdown persists, while others might recall some initially furloughed employees.

Members of Congress will still be paid as their pay is required by the American constitution, the letter adds.

As for the military, they are required to work during a shutdown but won't be paid until after.

"The effects of a government shutdown on business activity are uncertain, and their magnitude would depend on the duration of a shutdown and on decisions made by the Administration," the letter adds.

After Gaza peace talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington DC, US President Donald Trump says a deal is "beyond very close"

What does the plan say?

The proposal, if followed, would begin with the immediate cessation of military operations. It also says existing "battle lines" would be frozen in place.

Under the plan, Hamas would lay down its arms and its offensive weaponry would be destroyed. It would release 20 living Israeli hostages and the remains of more than two dozen believed to be dead within 72 hours.

Once those hostages are released, the proposal says Israel would release hundreds of detained Gazans.

It also says that once both sides agree to the proposal "full aid will be immediately sent into the Gaza Strip".

The US also outlines its plan for the future governance of Gaza. It says a "technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee" will govern temporarily "with oversight and supervision by a new international transitional body, the Board of Peace, which will be headed" by Trump. Former UK PM Tony Blair, and other leaders "to be announced", would also be part of the governing body.

It adds that Hamas must have no role in governance, "directly, indirectly, or in any form".

Much of the plan is focused on what the US calls an "economic development plan" to rebuild Gaza. It also says "Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza" and its forces will withdraw from the territory in stages over time.

The plan also leaves the door open to an eventual Palestinian state.

Fellow Nigerians, I bring to light a matter of urgent public concern regarding governance, transparency, and the use of public funds in Akwa Ibom State.

According to reliable sources, the Akwa Ibom State Government is currently developing a Judges Housing Estate in Uyo, comprising 50 units, with each unit valued at a staggering ₦250 million naira. If these figures are accurate, the total project cost would amount to ₦12.5 billion yet there is no official record, tender notice, or budgetary disclosure anywhere online or in public documents supporting the existence, location, or justification of this project.

We’ve all heard the saying; Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. In Nigeria, where there are rumors especially consistent, well sourced ones there is almost always some truth

What is even more concerning is that this is not an isolated case. All across Akwa Ibom State, there are numerous ongoing projects road constructions, housing schemes, educational and health infrastructure that remain shrouded in secrecy. The public has a right to know how their money is being spent, but we are consistently kept in the dark.

To make matters worse, when I tried to access information through official channels, I found that the Akwa Ibom State Judiciary website is suspended. Other key ministry portals such as Finance, Works, and Justice are either inactive, poorly updated, or completely unresponsive. This is a clear violation of the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) 2011, which guarantees every citizen the right to access public information.

We must ask ourselves:

Why are these projects hidden?

Who are the contractors executing these projects?

Why are government websites and public communication channels shut down or neglected?

Is this a deliberate attempt to avoid scrutiny and accountability?

This culture of secrecy is unacceptable. When projects are carried out without transparency, it creates an environment where corruption can thrive. Public funds become private gain, and the people are left with nothing but empty promises and crumbling infrastructure.

It is time we demand better. We deserve a government that operates in the open, that respects the right of the people to know, and that is truly accountable to the citizens.

I call on all well meaning Nigerians, civil society organizations, and the media to join in demanding full disclosure of all government projects in Akwa Ibom State and across Nigeria. The FOI Act is our tool. Let us use it.

US President Donald Trump rejected a plan by Israel to kill Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, three US officials have just confirmed.

Trump reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that assassinating Khamenei was "not a good idea", according to one official. The president has not commented publicly on the report.

The conversation is said to have happened since Israel launched its attack on Iran on Friday.

During an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu did not directly confirm or deny a report from Reuters that Trump had vetoed a plan to kill the ayatollah.

"There's so many false reports of conversations that never happened and I'm not going to get into that," the Israeli prime minister said.

"But I can tell you I think we do what we need to do. We will do what we need to do and I think the United States knows what is good for the United States and I'm just not going to get into it."

An Israeli official told CBS News that "in principle" Israel does not "kill political leaders, we are focused on nuclear and military. I don't think anyone making decisions about those programs should be living free and easy".

Israel first launched an attack on Iranian nuclear infrastructure and other targets on Friday. The two countries have continued to launch massive strikes at each other since, with attacks entering a third day on Sunday.

In his latest post on Truth Social about the escalating situation in the Middle East, Trump said "Iran and Israel should make a deal", adding that he would get the two to cease hostilities "just like I got India and Pakistan" - referring to the recent confrontation between the countries.

Speaking to reporters before leaving for the G7 summit in Canada, Trump said the US would continue to support Israel and declined to say if he had asked the country to stop its strikes on Iran.

The next round of US-Iran nuclear talks were initially scheduled to take place on Sunday, but mediator, Oman's foreign minister Badr Albusaidi, announced a day earlier that they had been cancelled.

Iran told Qatar and Oman that it was not open to negotiating a ceasefire while it was still under Israeli attack.

Trump said on Saturday that the US "had nothing to do with the attack on Iran".

"If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before," he warned.

A Colombian presidential candidate has been shot three times - reportedly twice in the head - at a campaign event in the capital, Bogota.

Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, was attacked while addressing a small crowd in a park on Saturday. Police arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene, local media say.

Uribe's wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, called on the nation to pray for his survival. "Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him," she said.

Uribe's Centro Democratico party condemned the attack, saying it endangered "democracy and freedom in Colombia.

Phone footage shared online appears to show the moment when he was shot in the head mid-speech, prompting those gathered to flee in panic.

Paramedics said he had been shot in the knee and twice in the head, AFP news agency reported. He was airlifted to Sante Fe clinic where supporters have gathered outside to hold vigil.

The government of left wing President Gustavo Petro said it "categorically and forcefully" condemned the attack as an "act of violence not only against his person, but also against democracy."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the shooting as a "direct threat to democracy".

Uribe announced his candidacy for next year's presidential election in October.

He is from a prominent political family in Colombia, with links to the country's Liberal Party. His father was a union leader and businessman.

His mother was Diana Turbay, a journalist who was murder in 1991 in a rescue attempt after she had been kidnapped by the Medellin drugs cartel run at the time by Pablo Escobar.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, received and celebrated Nigerian children on Children's Day.

The rules of the Senate were also suspended to allow Nigerian children into the chambers to celebrate their day with the Senators.

The Senate President used the opportunity to publicly acknowledge and celebrate the children's contributions to society urging them to aspire to be great leaders of tomorrow.

Children of various schools in Abuja attended the Senate plenary to celebrate their special day. Akpabio took time to have a handshake and compliment the children.
