Lemme try and explain, Before christ came to this world, he is ''the word'' and not the ''son'' he became the son after Mary give birth to him, from there he took on two natures.

Son of man(human nature)
Son of God(divine nature)

Because he humbled himself and became a man he had to pray to God in that state(human form) he was just like you when he was earth. - He felf hungry, tired, angry, sad, happy etc.
He had to pray to God.

After his resurrection he took on his dual-nature.
He was fully God and fully man.

He is equal to God in his divine form but lower than God in his human form..
