As the year 2017 remains two days to go, the federal government on Friday listed its achievements called ’17 Highlights from 2017’.

Among the achievements include, Nigeria exists from worst recession, naira stabilising against dollar, bumper harvest especially in rice, payment of pension among others.


However, the report was made known to newsmen through Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

Nigeria exited its worst recession in decades. After five quarters of negative growth, the economy bounced back into positive territory. Agriculture was one of the stars of 2017, posting consistent growth levels even throughout the recession. Also, Inflation fell for ten consecutive months during 2017 (February to November).

In a statement from the presidency, Mr. Buhari also congratulated the outgoing Liberian leader, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

On behalf of the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari warmly congratulates George Weah on his election as the next President of the Republic of Liberia.

President Buhari also commends the Liberian people on the peaceful conduct of the historic presidential run-off election, stressing that “this is another plus on Africa’s democratic scoreboard.”

The President equally applauds the efforts of the National Election Commission of Liberia, as well as regional and international observers who have contributed immensely to the electoral process and the strengthening of post-conflict democracy in the West African country.

Describing Mr. Weah’s victory as an affirmation of the will of the Liberian people to remain united, peaceful and prosperous, President Buhari pledged Nigeria’s readiness to work with Liberia on issues of mutual interest at bilateral, regional and global levels for the benefit of citizens of both countries.

The Nigerian leader also commends outgoing President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, under whose 12-year watch Liberia had transformed from being a pariah state to a country doing remarkably well on many fronts such as, women and civil rights issue, peace building and consolidation, ECOWAS and the Mano River Union.

President Buhari also notes that President Sirleaf deserves special commendation for the statesmanship she has shown in ensuring free and fair elections that will pave the way for a peaceful transfer of political power from one democratically elected leader to another for the first time in 73 years.

Wishing President-elect Weah and Liberians a peaceful transition, he reassures them of Nigeria’s determination to sustain the current cordial relationship with Liberia.

Liberia’s Vice President Joseph Boakai addresses the nation from his party’s headquarters in Monrovia on Friday.

Liberia’s Vice President, Jospeh Boakai, has conceded the Dec. 26 presidential runoff election to former soccer star, George Weah.

In a nationwide broadcast from his party’s headquarters in Monrovia on Friday, Boakai who was flanked by his supporters and party leaders, said he had already called Weah to congratulate him.

“I, Joseph Boakai, a man of peace, humility and with a deep faith in God hereby accept the results of the elections as announced by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

“I congratulate Ambassador Weah and pray that God will guide and empower him as takes the onerous responsibility of steering the affairs of our nation.

“Even though I will not be the captain of the ship, it is my fervent desire that the ship of state always sails smoothly.

“We must work to unite our people because Liberia is bigger than all of us,” he said.

Dressed in black, the vice president said he would not succumb to any temptation to impose pain, agony and uncertainty on the people of Liberia.

“My ambition to serve will never push me to stoop too low to violence.

“The truth of the matter is that what I was seeking was not power or title but instead the opportunity to serve,’’ Boakai noted.

With 98 per cent of the votes so far counted, Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change polled 61.5 per cent.

Boakai is trailing far behind with 38.5 per cent of the votes.

The Chairman of NEC, Mr Jerome Korkoya, who made the announcement on Thursday, said the final results would be released on Friday.(NAN)

The National Youth Caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) has held a special prayer for the quick recovery of Yusuf Buhari, the son of President Muhammadu Buhari, who was involved in an accident.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 2, 000 members of the APC youth wing gathered in Abuja on Friday to perform supplications and seek divine intervention for Yusuf.

The youth caucus also offered special prayer for sustained peace, unity and progress of the nation as well as guidance for its leaders.

Similarly, prayers were conducted for continued good health of President Buhari and the success of his administration.

Briefing journalists, Mr Haruna Okatahi, Publicity Secretary of the caucus, said Yusuf deserved sympathy of all Nigerians, especially the youth, due to the enormous sacrifice his father was making to re-position Nigeria.

Okatahi said thousands of youths were now benefiting from the N-Power Programme, which recruited unemployed graduates to work as teachers, agricultural extension workers and health extension workers, among other jobs.

He also commended the Federal Government for adopting holistic approach toward addressing fuel scarcity in the country.

“ This prayer session has become necessary for us to show our sympathy to Mr Yusuf Buhari, son of President Muhammadu Buhari, who was involved in accident few days ago.

“ Yusuf deserves our sympathy and the sympathy of all Nigerians, especially the youth who are among the direct beneficiaries of Buhari’s programmes and policies.

“ We pray to the Almighty God to heal him and increase his good health and that of his father so that he will continue the good work he has started,“ Okatah said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, had on Wednesday in a statement confirmed that Yusuf was involved in a bike accident,

He said that Yusuf had the accident on Tuesday night around Gwarimpa area in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

According to Shehu, Yusuf broke a limb and also sustained an injury to the head as a result of the incident.
