AFRICAN NATIONS CUP: NIGERIA MISS OUT AFTER DRAW. AFCON: NIGERIA OUT OF AFCON. NIGERIA FAIL TO QUALIFY FOR AFCON. Whichever way you choose to write the headline, all you are saying is 'Nigeria nor go play next African nations cup because them nor qualify'. As for me, that's the best news I have heard in recent months. I know what you are probably thinking. Yes I'm not a fan of the Super Eagles. You are right. But the reasons behind my happiness over Nigeria’s inability to qualify has nothing to do with being a fanatic. Be patient, I'd explain. After much speculations "CAF dropped Morocco as host of the football tournament on Tuesday November 11th following the nations request for postponement of the tournament in their country over Ebola fears." And to 'punish' them, they were automatically disqualified from competing altogether in the tournament. Was it a wise decision on the part of Morocco to withdraw? If you ask me, I'd say it was the best decision. Put clearly, the North Africans informed CAF that the tournament poses health and security risk to its citizens if it should hold on the earlier agreed date. And since both parties could not reach a compromise, they are no longer interested in hosting the competition. That decision was prudent and responsible. As the saying goes 'prevention is better than cure' Well CAF was strong-headed and postponing the tournament was the last thing on its mind. Thus, the floor was opened to any new host. One thing led to the other and Equatorial Guinea emerged as the replacement hosts. Meanwhile Equatorial Guinea, who originally was eliminated in the first qualifying round for having fielded an ineligible player, now regained qualification for the tournament as hosts, taking Morocco's place. They only got about 62 days to prepare for the continent's biggest football event. The consequences of that hasty decision would soon be made open. Morocco, who have superior footballing and health infrastructure than Equatorial Guinea has seen the consequences, and Equatorial Guinea shouldn't have accepted to host this Nations Cup. The Nations Cup attracts a huge crowd and we still have Ebola. While it's true that Equatorial Guinea has already held the competition (as co-host with Gabon 3 years ago) I'm concerned about its medical expertise. However, the central African nation announced yesterday that it had recruited 50 Cuban doctors to help fight Ebola. Even at that, I strongly question the capacity of the country to organize it, in the midst of the DEADLY Ebola. There are more than 50 doctors in Liberia helping to fight Ebola, the virus is still spreading. Maybe they (Equatorial Guinea) can arrange for one Doctor per spectator, then we can start from there. Left for me, the AFCON should be postponed indefinitely until there is no more Ebola. Its scary to know that one of the countries that qualified is the west African Guinea-the bedrock of Ebola. And now, back to the reason behind my joy. I know the devastating effect the spread of Ebola could have on a country. Its was not until 6 days ago that a three-month state of emergency was lifted in Liberia. The state of emergency included a 9 p.m. curfew with soldiers and police officers patrolling the streets. Communities were quarantined, including the seaside slum of West Point, home to about 75,000 people. I shudder to think such would happen to Nigeria. Even America, yes United States of America was temporally thrown into pandemonium when she recorded her first case of Ebola. Thus, the inability of Nigeria to qualify for AFCON 2015 has reduced or almost eliminated the possibility of Ebola returning to my country. At this point I wish to say congratulations to Morocco for that bold decision of putting the lives of its citizens ahead of football. I also wish those teams who qualified, the very best. I'd have to sit in front of my TV and watch. At least, Ebola can't be contacted via TV. Finally, I say a big congratulations to the Super eagles for failing to qualify. They'd never know how much good they've done for their beloved country. Meanwhile, AFCON 2015 is scheduled to hold on January 17- February 8 with the draws on December 3 2014. |
How r we sure that ambassador doesn't have Ebola? |
Brazil 2014, SEMI-FINALS PREVIEWS AND PREDICTIONS. Only four of the 64 matches at the 2014 World Cup are left, but don't freak out—the ones remaining should be the best yet. As the semi-finals beckon, only four teams remain. The European duo of Germany and Holland will be joined by the South American pair of Brazil and Argentina, with all four teams knowing that they have an opportunity of a lifetime to lift football’s most coveted prize. The knock-out matches have been filled with drama and controversy throughout, keeping everyone on the edge of their seat. Just as you think you’ve seen it all, this World Cup keeps throwing spanners into the works in what will be a tournament remembered for generations. Every team left standing is guaranteed two more matches with the third-place decider upcoming, but there's no doubting that each of the four believe their title hopes are very much alive. BRAZIL vs GERMANY @9:00 PM Tue, Jul 8 2014. The first semi-final sees two international heavyweights go toe-to-toe with hosts Brazil aiming to win the World Cup on home soil against a forever efficient Germany side who will be desperate to lift the trophy after falling short in previous major tournaments. Neither side took a glamorous route to get here. Brazil struggled through penalty kicks in the knockout stage, and Germany were even taken into extra time by Algeria. But after battling through tough opposition, each made it to Tuesday's semifinal. However, not both enter completely healthy. It was an emotional and exhausting encounter between Brazil and Columbia in the quarter-finals. After taking an early lead for the second match running, this time via Thiago Silva, Brazil were able to win the match within the first 90 minutes but the match still had as much drama as the penalty shoot-out win against Chile. David Luiz doubled the advantage with one of the goals of the tournament after hitting the sweetest of free kicks from around 30 yards out. The hosts would’ve thought that they could see the game out comfortably but doing things the easy way seems to be against their nature. A penalty from the tournament’s top scorer, James Rodriguez, gave the Columbians a lifeline and led to a frantic end which eventually saw Brazil win on a 2-1 score line. However, the match was overshadowed somewhat by the injury suffered to star man Neymar. After a challenge from defender Juan Zuniga (Columbia) late in the game, the Barcelona man was stretched off with fears etched on the faces of the Brazilian faithful. It was later confirmed that Neymar had suffered a broken bone in his back and would be ruled out of the tournament, a huge loss not only to Brazil, but for the World Cup as a whole. To make matters worse, Brazil's defense will also need a replacement as captain Thiago Silva will have to sit out from an accumulation of yellow cards. In retrospect, even a healthy Brazil squad in their home stadium in the World Cup would be facing a tall task with the Germans coming in. Joachim Low's men have validated their World Cup favorite status by steamrolling through opposition, and even in their pedestrian performances, they're still unbeatable. Apart from the 4-0 drubbing they gave Portugal in their opening World Cup match, the Germans have been more than impressive. Their normally dependant defence has looked shaky so far and the cutting edge up front has been lacking. That being said, they’ve still been winning games without playing well, a clear mark of potential champions. After being taken to extra time by a brave Algerian side, Joachim Low’s men then entertained France in a match which wasn’t as entertaining as many expected, maybe down to the fear of making a mistake. Nevertheless, Germany did take the lead early on from a clever header by the impressive Mats Hummels. Now even though France did have their chances throughout the course of the match, Germany were quite comfortably and were rarely troubled significantly. They held out for a 1-0 win which saw them reach yet another quarter final, their ninth in as many World Cups. Germany is the first country to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in four consecutive tournaments. Amazingly for two World Cup powerhouses with 24 semi-final appearances, this will be just their second meeting in the competition after the 2002 final. Back then a rugged German side that battled it`s way to the final with a series of 1-0 wins on the back of the best goalkeeper in the tournament, Oliver Kahn, faced a Brazil side containing a magical front three of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo. Germany would seek nothing but revenge this time around and they are glad that the magical front three are not around anymore. These two teams played 21 times against each other before. Brazil won 12, Germany 4, and 5 of those ended in a draw. There were 63 goals scored in total. Brazil scored 39 of those and Germany 24. In terms of major tournaments, Brazil have won all three encounters. Two of the victories came in the Confederations Cup with a 3-2 win coming in 2005 whilst winning 4-0 back in 1999. The hosts have also won the only World Cup match between the two sides, that being the final in Japan in 2002. Ronaldo scored twice in a 2-0 to give Brazil their fifth World Cup victory. My Prediction – Brazil 0-1 Germany NETHERLANDS vs ARGENTINA @9:00 PM Wed, Jul 9 2014. To βε̲̣̣̣̥ continued...........
