It is an honour awarded by The Recording Academy to recognise outstanding achievement in the mainly English-language music industry. Since it’s debut in 1958, the award show has recognised musicians from all over the world through different categories.

Here are the Nigerians who have been nominated for the award:

1. King Sunny Ade

His 1983 album earned him his first Grammy Award nomination in the folk/ethnic music category and since then, KSA has been nominated one time more in 1988. He, however, hasn’t won one.



2. Kevin Olusola

Kevin Olusola is one fifth of the popular vocal band, Pentatonix. In 2015, they won a Grammy in the “Best Arrangement, Instrumental or a cappella” category for their song “Daft Punk”

3. Sade Adu

Sade is a Nigerian-born English singer-songwriter, composer, arranger, and record producer very popular for her ‘Sweetest Taboo’ song. Sade and her band have been nominated for a total of 9 grammy awards between 1986 and 2013 and have won four.

4. Femi Kuti

Femi Anikulapo Kuti is the eldest son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He has been nominated for a Grammy award four times in the world music category in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013 but has never won.


5. Chamillionaire

Born as Hakeem Rasaki to a Nigerian father and an African American mother, Chamillionaire has been nominated for a grammy twice in 2007 for the same song ‘Riddin’. He won the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group that year.


6. Sikiru Adepoju

Sikiru Adepoju is a percussionist and recording artist from Nigeria, primarily in the genres of traditional African music and world music. He was as part of Planet Drum, whose title album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 1991. He was also part of the Global Drum Project, whose title album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2009.



7. Seal

Popular singer and songwriter, Seal won the Grammys Record of the Year and Song of the Year awards for his song Kiss from a Rose, a song which was remixed as a soundtrack to Batman forever. He has since won four Grammys and even been nominated for more.

Indications have emerged that Boko Haram insurgents have given the Federal Government some conditions for the release of more Chibok girls. A source with details of the negotiation says unlike the release of the 21 girls last Thursday, the release of the remaining girls will be strictly based on the swap of about 16 of the group’s Commanders held in detention and payment of ransom. Out Of the 219 Chibok girls still missing, only 104 were left as the rest had been married off to top commanders of the sect and converted to Islam, Vanguard reports. The report claimed that the Islamic group will insist on an upfront payment of huge cash by government before freeing the captives. According to the source, “The truth is that those Chibok girls are now Boko Haram members, having married the sect members and become radicalised. “The remaining 83 girls are with a top leader of Boko Haram and those are the only ones we are going to work for their release in the next phase of our negotiations which starts immediately. “The others had since become Boko Haram members, having been married off and radicalised into Boko Haram as soon as they were captured over two years ago. “I think the guys are settled on the idea that the cash must come ahead of the release since they had proved to government that they are reliable by releasing the 21 girls, last week, without many conditions attached.” This revelation is coming at a time when President Muhammadu Buhari expressed optimism that more of the abducted Chibokgirls will be released

President Muhammadu Buhari puts up 2 presidential jets for sale
On Tuesday, October 4, the federal government advertised the sale of two aircraft in the presidential fleet.

Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, confirmed this in a series of tweets from his Twitter handle @GarShehu.

He said this is in line with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari that aircraft in the presidential air fleet be reduced to cut down on waste.

The Office of the National Security Adviser advertised the sale of two airplanes in a national daily, adding that the aircraft that are currently up for sale are Falcon 7x and Hawker 4000 and are to be quoted in dollars.

The president’s senior special assistant also said some of the aircrafts will be handed over to the Nigerian Air force to boost their operations.

It was earlier reported that interested buyers were asked to inspect the Falcon at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International, Airport, Abuja, and the Hawker at Cessna Zurich Citation Service Centre, Zurich, Switzerland.

The Presidential Aircraft Fleet contains 10 aircraft. They are Boeing Business Jet (Boeing 737-800 or AirForce One), one Gulfstream 550, one Gulfstream V (Gulfstream 500) and two Falcons 7X. Others are one Hawker Sidley 4000, two AgustaWestland AW 139 helicopters and twoAgustaWestland AW 101 helicopter.

Recall that President Buhari one year ago promised Nigerians to cut the cost of governance by selling a part of his presidential air fleet.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have trailed the proposed sale of two of the jets used by President Muhammadu Buhari.

While some Nigerians have commended the move, others argue that this should have been done earlier. Some however expressed doubt about how the money from the sale of the jet will be managed.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili on Monday charged President Muhammadu Buhari to always tell Nigerians the truth when it comes to insurgency so as to stop creating doubts in the minds of the citizenry, Daily Post reports.
Ezekwesili who is the leader of the #BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, movement made the call at the group’s usual sit-out in Abuja.
Ezekwesili said, “The government cannot afford to go to the old ways where lies were fed to the people. Let there be truthfulness. Government should not create a trust deficit syndrome because it will be difficult to mend. Everything that the government is doing concerning the war, they should tell the truth. We will get used to it and join in the solution.”
Stating that BBOG will continue to demand for the return of the kidnapped Chibok girls, Ezekwesili beckoned on the President to fulfill the promise he made to the parents of the kidnapped girls.
“What drove us out of our comfort zone is that we got tired of not doing anything. We will continue with our core value. No matter what anyone want to do, this advocacy will continue. A pledge is a pledge. We made a pledge to parents of the Chibok girls and will not fail in this pledge.”
“We have gone through a lot. But what we have gone through is little of what the 219 girls are going through in the hands of the Boko Haram sect. Let nobody succeed in making us feel we should not continue. We will continue until the girls are back. The girls deserve justice and they have not been given justice. We are unhappy that they are spending close to two years in the hands of the terrorists.”
“I have not lost hope. There is no basis to lose hope. Though we might be depressed sometimes, we won’t lose hope. We will stand for the girls. We will hold on to the commitment the president made to the Chibok girls’ parents and Nigerians. We believe that he will keep his promise and bring the girls back.”
“Some people have been vocal about our Chibok girls, but now they feel the Chibok girls are distractions. Our Chibok girls are not distractions,” she said.
