'Let's forget about the 2026 World Cup'—Nigerian football fans do not believe this Super Eagles team will win the AFCON or qualify for the World Cup after struggling against Lesotho.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

The Super Eagles World Cup qualification opener was against the Crocodiles of Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

The Super Eagles had international friendly games against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Mozambique during the last international break.

However, it seems those preparatory games did not help the Super Eagles as they produced a lackluster first half against Lesotho.

The first half ended in a goalless draw as they went to the break level with the minnows.

The second half had the same tempo until Lesotho went in front in the 56th minute when Tshwarelo Bereng located Motlomelo Mkhwanazi from a corner kick.

Super Eagles Head Coach Jose Peseiro took out Ademola Lookman and Taiwo Awoniyi for Terem Moffi and Moses Simon.

The Super Eagles increased the tempo of attacking through a corner kick by Kelechi Iheanacho found the equalizer headed in by Semi Ajayi.

Peseiro would later introduce Bruno Onyemaechi, Ola Aina, and Joe Aribo in an attempt to try to change the game.

The Super Eagles playing in the rain were unable to find the breakthrough as the game ended in a draw.

Reaction as Super Eagles Struggle against Lesotho
The Super Eagles have branded Let's Do It Again ahead of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire but were unable to start their World Campaign with a win.

The team under Peseiro had not shown any pattern of play building up or improvement in midfield.

Despite boasting some of the finest strikers in the world such as Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen and Terem Moffi of Nice the Super Eagles were unable to test the Lesotho goalkeeper.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and now fans believe after a draw to start against Lesotho will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America (USA).

Alex Pereira won the vacant light heavyweight title in the UFC 295 main event by bludgeoning Jiri Prochazka with elbows, just 11 fights into his mixed martial arts career is now a two-division champion.

Although Prochazka seemed to get back up very soon in the replays, Pereira thought the intervention was appropriate.

Prochazka expressed no grievances when speaking about the loss, despite the fact that there were undoubtedly concerns with Goddard's call.

Pereira calls out Adesanya
Pereira after the fight stated he wants to take on Adesanya for the third time.

He said, “I know that I’m not going to do what he did to me to and make me fight three times to fight him at middleweight.

"I know it’s a guy we have a lot of history. I want to make this fight happen. Adesanya, come to daddy.”

Adesanya responds to Pereira
Adesanya responded to that on social media, citing the Disney movie "Frozen" as inspiration.

After knocking out Pereira in their most recent meeting at UFC 283 in April, Adesanya's attitude seems to suggest he isn't interested in facing him again.

Before that, Pereira had defeated Adesanya twice in kickboxing and once more in mixed martial arts (MMA) after Adesanya lost the UFC middleweight title to him via knockout in November 2023.

After losing the title to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in September, Adesanya has been on a break from the sport.

Sheroes Cup Opening day results

Nigeria and the Republic of Benin presented a joint bid to host the tournament.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared its support for the bid for the country's ambition to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

The Sports Development Director, John Owan Enoh, will be attending the Confederation of African Football Executive Committee meeting in Cairo, Egypt, as the nation solidifies its bid to host the AFCON tournament for the first time since 1980.

Representatives of the FG, the Minister, and the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will attend the meeting. Nigeria will deliver a presentation to the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt, during the conference.

All countries that made bids to host the AFCON tournament in 2025 and 2027 are anticipated to attend the conference, when the CAF Independent Assessment Committee will present their reports for assessment and debate by CAF executives.

The CAF delegation has already visited Nigeria to evaluate facilities at various possible host stadiums throughout the country.

On the Brazilian network SBT, the 23-year-old striker said in Fofocalizando as reported by BBC, "the truth will come out".

When asked about abuse of women, he responded: "It's totally wrong, 100% wrong. I have a mother, a sister. I would never want this to happen to them."

He added: "It was difficult [being cut from the national team]. It made me really sad, because it's something that I'm 100% sure is not true.

“It's not easy, we work and fight to make our dreams come true, even more so when we wear the Brazilian team shirt."

He is also being investigated for additional assault claims made against him by a lady during an interview with a Brazilian TV station.

Police have begun an investigation into claims that his former partner was the victim of domestic violence.

Previously, Antony commented on Cavallin's allegations on social media, saying, ”The evidence already produced and the other evidence that will be produced demonstrate that I am innocent of the accusations made."

Meanwhile, Brazil has cut him from their squad after "facts became public" that "need to be investigated," while Manchester United indicated they were taking the allegations from Monday "seriously."

The latest allegations have not been addressed by the Red Devils, and it is unclear if Antony will be chosen for their upcoming match against Brighton on Saturday, September 16.

Six days after the kissing incident with Jenni Hermoso at the end of the Women's World Cup final, 11 coaches and technical staff issued a unified statement on Saturday denouncing Rubiales' treatment of the forward.

Recent reports also suggest that FIFA have taken further action on the incident and has suspended the Spanish president for 90 days.

Despite the recent decision of eleven members of the Spain coaching team resigning, Rubiales has insisted that he will not quit.

The Spanish FA have released a statement regarding the incident that happened during the Women's World Cup.

According to the statement as reported by The Guardian, “The undersigned, in light of the unacceptable attitude and statements made by the head of the federation, have taken the decision to resign from their positions.

“This was particularly hurtful. As many of the female members of the coaching staff were obliged to sit in the front row, so as to suggest that they agreed with the remarks made by Rubiales, the statement claimed.”

After Fifa announced Rubiales would be immediately barred from all football-related activities at the national and international levels for an initial period of 90 days, pending the disciplinary proceedings, the joint resignation statement was released a few hours later.

The crew, which also includes assistant managers Montse Tomé, Javier Lerga, and Eugenio Gonzalo Martin, as well as physio Blanca Romero Moraleda and goalie coach Carlos Sanchez, asserted that they were required to attend Rubiales' speech on Friday.

Soon after, the federation announced that Pedro Rocha Junco, its vice president, would take over as interim president.

Luis Rubiales has also responded to the suspension issued by FIFA saying he is ready to defend himself.

In a statement, it added, “Luis Rubiales has stated that he will defend himself legally in the competent bodies, he has full confidence in the Fifa bodies and reiterates that, in this way, he is given the opportunity to begin his defence so that the truth prevails and his complete innocence is proven.”

Following the event, Cavallin said she required sutures in the interior of her breast. Also, Cavallin said Antony prevented her from leaving their house.

Afterwards, Antony responded with a message on his Instagram page, claiming that he had been "falsely accused" and that he had been "suffering in silence" while the inquiry was ongoing.

He wrote as reported by Daily Mail, “For you, after submitting my statement at the police station where the investigation involving my name is being conducted, I wanted to speak publicly for the first time since I was falsely accused of assault.

Nigeria bounced back to winning ways in their third match at the ongoing 2023 African Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon, after losing their second game to Cameroon.

Nigeria defeated Burundi 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-9) to win the second match of the tournament on Friday at Yaounde's Palais Polyvalent des Sports.

The head coach of the Nigeria women’s volleyball team, Samuel Ajayi, claimed that despite having trouble in the opening set, the players found their groove against Burundi.

According to Ajayi, the team will significantly advance with sufficient exposure, especially in international friendlies.

He said, “My players lived up to expectations during the match against Cameroon on Thursday and we struggled in the first set against Burundi but picked ourselves together at the end of the day.

“Nigeria has participated in several championships over the years but we are currently rebuilding our women’s national team.

“You can all see that a large chunk of the team paraded are young and you do not expect them to be as spectacular as other teams that have been together for a very long time and participated at World Championships.”

“I believe in the coming years; Nigeria will return to where they rightfully belong,” he added.
