Mauricio Pochettino left Chelsea by mutual consent after 11 months, and the lucrative void at Stamford Bridge will need to be filled.

Pochettino left Chelsea on Tuesday night in shocking circumstances, leaving the club in 6th after a turbulent first season.

5 managers who could replace Mourinho at Chelsea

After being let go by the club following a one-year stint, Mauricio Pochettino could be set for a sensational return to Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino's tenure at Chelsea may have ended abruptly, but his return to Stamford Bridge is imminent with the Argentine manager set to grace his old stomping ground just 19 days after the announcement of his departure.

Pochettino set for awkward Soccer Aid return

Pochettino finds himself facing an uncomfortable reunion with the Stamford Bridge faithful, after his exit from the club, which was labeled as a 'mutual agreement,' midway through his contracted term left unfinished business among supporters, worsened by the fact that he left without a proper goodbye.

Despite his recent exit, Pochettino is slated to make a swift return to the Chelsea grounds as he is scheduled to manage the 'World XI' team at Soccer Aid, to be held at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, June 9. With a significant contingent of Chelsea fans expected to attend, drawn by the prospect of witnessing former stars like Eden Hazard and Frank Lampard, Pochettino's faces an awkward experience with Blues’fans who still have a bone to pick with him.

Sports / Heartbreak For Super Eagle Coach As Players Makes England Squad Dumps Nigeria by tundetech3: 10:21am On May 22
Gareth Southgate made some bold decisions, but he has also broken the hearts of many Nigerian football fans.

Coach Finidi George-led Super Eagles have been dealt a massive blow after England coach Gareth Southgate named Nigeria-eligible midfielder in their provisional squad.

Southgate named Eagles midfielder Eberechi Eze in England’s provisional squad of 33 for the upcoming European Championships in Germany.

However, Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Chelsea trio of Ben Chilwell, Reece James, and Raheem Sterling are some of the big names missing.

Surprise names on the list include Liverpool’s teenager Quansah, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Burnley’s goalkeeper James Trafford. West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Dean Henderson, and Marc Guehi also made the cut.

Nigeria miss out on Eberechi Eze

Coach Finidi George would have been looking to convince Eberechi Eze to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria.

The Crystal Palace star was instrumental in helping the Eagles finish tenth in the league, contributing 11 goals and four assists.

However, the former Enyimba boss has been dealt a big blow with Eze’s call-up to the England squad for the EURO 2024.

After Karim Adeyemi was left out by Germany, Michael Olise by France, and Joshua Zirkzee by the Netherlands, fans of the Super Eagles expected that Eze might also be left out by England – giving a possibility for the former QPR star to play for Nigeria.

Okwaraji's journey from a law graduate to a celebrated footballer is not just a tale of sporting prowess but a testament to his dedication to his nation.

In the annals of Nigerian football history, few stories resonate as deeply as that of Samuel Okwaraji, a name synonymous with patriotism, talent, and a tragically cut-short career.

Okwaraji's journey from a law graduate to a celebrated footballer is not just a tale of sporting prowess but a testament to his dedication to his nation.

This article delves into the life and times of Okwaraji, particularly focusing on his remarkable contribution during the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

The Phenomenon of Samuel Okwaraji

Samuel Okwaraji's impact on Nigerian football was profound, not just for his skills on the field but for the remarkable character he embodied. In a nation where educational achievements often led to political or corporate careers, Okwaraji, a law graduate from Rome, chose to pursue his passion for football.

This decision, as unconventional as it was for a highly educated Nigerian in the 1980s, made him a unique figure in the eyes of his compatriots. Okwaraji's commitment to playing for his country was exceptional; it's said that he would often fund his own travel for international matches without seeking reimbursement from the Nigerian Football Association.

AFCON 1988: A Pivotal Moment

During the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Okwaraji made a memorable mark by scoring one of the fastest goals in the tournament's history against Cameroon.

His performance was instrumental in Nigeria's journey to the finals, where they narrowly lost to Cameroon. Okwaraji's agility and mastery on the field, coupled with his educational background and humility, bridged societal divides and earned him widespread admiration.

Nigeria vs Angola: The Tragic End and Lasting Legacy

Tragically, Okwaraji's life and career were cut short on August 12, 1989. While playing in a World Cup qualifier against Angola in Lagos, he collapsed on the field and passed away from heart failure caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition marked by an enlarged heart and high blood pressure.

This event not only devastated the Nigerian football community but also highlighted the need for better medical care and support for athletes.

Despite these challenges, efforts have been made to honor Okwaraji's memory. Former Lagos Governor, Babatunde Fashola, notably provided a house for Okwaraji's mother and erected a bust in his honor at the National Stadium, Lagos. These gestures, while significant, also serve as a reminder of the broader support that is often lacking for athletes' families in the wake of such tragedies.

Okwaraji's story transcends the boundaries of sport. He remains an enduring symbol of patriotism, passion, and the potential of Nigerian youth. His legacy is a call to action for better healthcare and support for athletes, ensuring their well-being is always a priority. Okwaraji's life and untimely death continue to inspire and remind us of the profound impact one individual can have, both in their life and after.

Reflecting on Okwaraji's Impact for Nigeria

Samuel Okwaraji remains a symbol of patriotism, talent, and humility in Nigerian sports. His life story, particularly the way he seamlessly combined academic prowess with athletic excellence, continues to inspire. Okwaraji's untimely death is a stark reminder of the sacrifices athletes make and the importance of recognizing and supporting these efforts. His legacy persists as a call to action for better healthcare and support systems for sports personalities, ensuring that the wellbeing of players is always a priority.

Okwaraji's unique background as an educated footballer had a significant impact on how sports can bridge societal divides. In a time when footballers were primarily known for their athletic prowess, Okwaraji brought a blend of intellect and skill to the field. His life challenged stereotypes and proved that one could excel both academically and athletically, thereby bridging the gap between the educated elite and the sporting world. His story resonates particularly in communities where sports are often seen as a diversion from academic pursuits.

Samuel Okwaraji’s story continues to resonate in the hearts of Nigerians and football enthusiasts worldwide. His life is a poignant reminder of the human aspect of sports – the dreams, the dedication, and the risks. Okwaraji’s legacy is not just about his prowess on the football field but also about his character, intellect, and the indelible mark he left on Nigerian football and society at large.

Samuel Okwaraji's impact extends far beyond his achievements on the football pitch. His life story continues to inspire and serve as a powerful reminder of the

Sports / Use Local Coach - Nigerians Urge NFF To Sack Peseiro After Draw With Zimbabwe by tundetech3: 5:43pm On Nov 19, 2023
With just two games played in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Nigerians are already fed up with coach Jose Peseiro and have asked for an indigenous coach to take over from him.

Fans of the Super Eagles of Nigeria have grown frustrated with Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro after watching recent World Cup qualifiers.

A star-studded Super Eagles of Nigeria team could not muster all three points in two World Cup qualifiers against African minnows Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

To put it in a better context, Nigeria only got two points (could have lost both games, actually) playing against teams ranked far below them in the FIFA ranking - Zimbabwe is ranked 123rd in the world, while Lesotho is a hundred-plus places below, occupying the 153rd position.

Nigeria drew 1-1 with Lesotho in the first game, while South Africa beat Benin 2-1 to top the group. In the second game against Zimbabwe, many expected the Super Eagles to come out all guns blazing, but they disappointed once more.

Following the laborious and tasteless showings in both games, Nigerian football fans have urged the Nigerian Football Federation to part ways with Jose Peseiro.

Nigerian fans want home-based case to replace Peseiro
Pulse Sports Nigeria on Facebook asked if Jose Peseiro remains the right man to lead Nigeria to success at the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The answer was an overwhelming 'NO.'

Many fans want the Super Eagles to have a local coach, preferably one of Nigeria’s ex-internationals - Emmanuel Amuneke, Austin Eguavoen, and Sunday Oliseh have all managed the Super Eagles at one time or the other.

The argument is that many African sides, like Ghana, Morocco, and Senegal, all have indigenous coaches, and the Super Eagles should follow suit.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have now put themselves in a difficult position in the running to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with South Africa leading the group with 3 points..

Sports / Super Eagles 1-1 Lesotho: Nigerians Ready To Miss World Cup Again In 2026 by tundetech3: 7:24pm On Nov 16, 2023
'Let's forget about the 2026 World Cup'—Nigerian football fans do not believe this Super Eagles team will win the AFCON or qualify for the World Cup after struggling against Lesotho.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

The Super Eagles World Cup qualification opener was against the Crocodiles of Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Super Eagles 1-1 Lesotho
The Super Eagles had international friendly games against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Mozambique during the last international break.

However, it seems those preparatory games did not help the Super Eagles as they produced a lackluster first half against Lesotho.

The first half ended in a goalless draw as they went to the break level with the minnows.

The second half had the same tempo until Lesotho went in front in the 56th minute when Tshwarelo Bereng located Motlomelo Mkhwanazi from a corner kick.

Super Eagles Head Coach Jose Peseiro took out Ademola Lookman and Taiwo Awoniyi for Terem Moffi and Moses Simon.

The Super Eagles increased the tempo of attacking through a corner kick by Kelechi Iheanacho found the equalizer headed in by Semi Ajayi.

Peseiro would later introduce Bruno Onyemaechi, Ola Aina, and Joe Aribo in an attempt to try to change the game.

The Super Eagles playing in the rain were unable to find the breakthrough as the game ended in a draw.

Reaction as Super Eagles Struggle against Lesotho
The Super Eagles have branded Let's Do It Again ahead of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire but were unable to start their World Campaign with a win.

The team under Peseiro had not shown any pattern of play building up or improvement in midfield.

Despite boasting some of the finest strikers in the world such as Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen and Terem Moffi of Nice the Super Eagles were unable to test the Lesotho goalkeeper.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and now fans believe after a draw to start against Lesotho will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America (USA).

Sports / Israel Adesanya Blasts Alex Pereira Calling For 3rd Fight by tundetech3: 1:44pm On Nov 12, 2023
'Rent free' - Israel Adesanya reminds Alex Pereira what happened when they last met in the UFC.

Alex Pereira won the vacant light heavyweight title in the UFC 295 main event by bludgeoning Jiri Prochazka with elbows, just 11 fights into his mixed martial arts career is now a two-division champion.

After hitting Prochazka early with leg kicks and dropping the previous champion with a stunning left hook as they traded blows close to the cage, he won gold.

Attempting to seize a takedown in order to stave off an impending attack Prochazka went to his knees.

Pereira responded with a barrage of punches and elbows to the side of Prochazka's head, sending him slumping backwards onto the floor.

The fight ended at 4:08 in the second round after the onslaught persisted and referee Marc Goddard saw enough.

Although Prochazka seemed to get back up very soon in the replays, Pereira thought the intervention was appropriate.

Prochazka expressed no grievances when speaking about the loss, despite the fact that there were undoubtedly concerns with Goddard's call.

Pereira calls out Adesanya
Pereira after the fight stated he wants to take on Adesanya for the third time.

He said, “I know that I’m not going to do what he did to me to and make me fight three times to fight him at middleweight.

"I know it’s a guy we have a lot of history. I want to make this fight happen. Adesanya, come to daddy.”

Adesanya responds to Pereira
Adesanya responded to that on social media, citing the Disney movie "Frozen" as inspiration.

After knocking out Pereira in their most recent meeting at UFC 283 in April, Adesanya's attitude seems to suggest he isn't interested in facing him again.

Before that, Pereira had defeated Adesanya twice in kickboxing and once more in mixed martial arts (MMA) after Adesanya lost the UFC middleweight title to him via knockout in November 2023.

After losing the title to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in September, Adesanya has been on a break from the sport.

Sports / Nigerians Drag INEC 'for Allegedly Rigging' Francis Ngannou Vs Tyson Fury Fight by tundetech3: 6:03pm On Oct 29, 2023
Some Nigerians claim the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) helped Tyson Fury rig the fight against Francis Ngannou.

The Cameroonian UFC fighter Francis Ngannou faced off against unbeaten WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia.

After several rounds of fighting, the judges announced the unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury as the winner by split decision.

However, despite Fury’s win, some Nigerians who felt the Cameroonian was robbed of his victory joked that the Gypsy King won because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) manipulated the result of the bout.

Nigerians react to INEC’s rigging
The fans were displeased by the decision to announce Tyson Fury as the winner and claimed that INEC, which has been accused of manipulating election results in the country, manipulated the results of the fight.

In the first round, Fury started the fight strongly and looked like it was going to be a long night for Francis Ngannou.

However, in the second round, Ngannou charges in and lands a blow on Fury that gives him a cut on his forehead.

And in the third round, Ngannou laid Fury on the deck with a breathtaking left hand that stunned his opponent.

The fight which looked like it was heading towards a win for Francis Ngannou after putting Fury on the ground was later overturned by the judges and Fury was announced as the winner.

The announcement led to several comments on social media, especially from Nigerians who claimed that INEC took over as the judges of the fight.

A Nigerian on X said, “The only way Tyson Fury wins this is if it's INEC computing the scores, that's just the only way.”

Another one said, “This INEC and Supreme Court thing is everywhere. Francis Ngannou clearly won this fight but got robbed on technicalities.”

Another Nigerian commented, “Last night was a replica of Nigeria INEC 😭😭😭 Africa, come back home.”

One fan also replied, “Of course, it was rigged, Inec probably learnt work from those Judges.”

Sports / 'Do It If It's Easy' - Super Eagles Goalkeeper Uzoho Fires Back At Critics by tundetech3: 1:29pm On Oct 18, 2023
Francis Uzoho, Super Eagles' number one goalkeeper has hit back at critics following his performance against Mozambique

Super Eagles claimed a 3-2 victory over ten-men Mozambique in Portugal in their second international friendly game.

Goals from Terem Moffi, Moses Simon and Frank Onyeka were enough to claim the victory for Nigeria.

However, despite the win, it was Francis Uzoho who made the headline with another error that led to the Super Eagles conceding.

The Omonoia FC goalkeeper has now responded to fans' criticism of his performance in Super Eagles' previous games.

Francis Uzoho’s response
Francis Uzoho was disappointed with the way fans have criticised him for his performance against Mozambique and have fired back at his critics.

Nigeria won their first international friendly match in five years after going winless in their previous fifteen matches.

Despite the Super Eagles breaking the winless run, fans were not happy with the performance of their number-one goalkeeper Uzoho.

Fans have grown irritated about the manager's decision to keep Francis Uzoho as his first choice and failed to consider alternative goalkeepers.

In the last two games, the goalkeeper made two errors that led to a goal which caused the fans to erupt in rage.

After the victory over Mozambique, the goalkeeper was enraged enough to respond with his own statement in response to the cathartic outpour.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper posted a selfie on his Snapchat account with the statement, “If easy, go do am make oyinbo man sign you.”

The goalkeeper has come under pressure from Nigerians and has responded to their criticism saying if they feel it is easy they should become a goalkeeper so they can be signed by a white man.

Sports / Francis Uzoho: Super Eagles Coach Told To 'borrow' Super Falcons' Goal-keeper by tundetech3: 12:16pm On Oct 14, 2023
Nigerians have provided a solution for the goalkeeper dilemma in the Nigeria Super Eagles for head coach Jose Peseiro, with Super Falcons' Chiamaka Nnadozie named.

In the wake of a goalkeeping challenge faced by Nigeria’s Super Eagles, the head coach of the men’s team, Jose Peseiro, has received a suggestion to explore an alternative solution.

The proposal from some concerned Nigerians has encouraged Peseiro to consider enlisting the services of Super Falcons’ goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, to bolster the Super Eagles' goalkeeping options.

Nigeria vs Saudi Arabia: Uzoho howler
The Nigerian Eagles and their Green Falcons counterparts from Saudi Arabia faced off for the first time in a head-to-head at the Estadio Municipal de Portimao in Portugal on Friday evening.

Both nations delivered an exciting football match, with Nigeria dominating most of the four-goal thriller which saw them share the spoils after it ended 2-2.

However, a crucial moment involving Cyprus-based goalkeeper, Uzoho, became the biggest talking point of discussion from the clash.

Uzoho, the Nigerian goalkeeper, made an uncharacteristic error that allowed Saudi Arabia to break the deadlock on the hour mark.

This mistake proved to be costly in the end despite the Super Eagles fighting back to lead 2-1 at some point in the game thanks to two superb goals from Victor Boniface and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Saudi Arabia would deny Nigeria a win when Mohamed Kanno struck a late equaliser from another free kick to earn the Falcons a share of the spoils.

Nnadozie to help the Super Eagles
Following another costly slip-up from Uzoho, some concerned Nigerians have voiced their opinions with a suggestion that coach Peseiro should look to Super Falcons’ star Nnadozie as a solution.

Nnadozie, a standout talent for the Women’s team, has gained recognition for her skills and performance in the women’s game for club and country.

She was in superb form as Nigeria made it to the last 16 at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, where she kept three clean sheets in four matches.

Nnadozie also proved decisive between the sticks as her club, Paris FC, knocked out Arsenal in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, UWCL.

Reacting to Uzoho’s performance, one of the concerned citizens Ebukanson said on , formerly Twitter “unpopular opinion, Chiamaka Nnadozie in this Super Eagles team will do better than Uzoho and Okoye.”

Jonah Sunday re-echoed Ebukanson’s comment when he added on Facebook; “Please, don’t use Uzoho in the next match. Let’s borrow Super Falcons goalkeeper instead.”

Her possible inclusion, as suggested by the Nigerians, in the Super Eagles setup could potentially provide a fresh perspective and additional experienced option for the goalkeeping position

The summary
However, the proposal does not intend to undermine Uzoho's abilities but to highlight the need for competition and alternatives in a critical position on the field ahead of future matches.

Coach Peseiro has since reacted in defence of Uzoho but added a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by his team.

As Nigerians continue to react and the discussions heighten, the football community remains hopeful that the Super Eagles will find a lasting solution that strengthens the goalkeeping department and enhances the team’s chances of competing in the next AFCON.

Nnadozie’s inclusion represents an interesting development that seeks to ensure that Nigeria remains one of the football giants in the continent.

Sports / ‘We Can Win It’ - Jose Peseiro On Super Eagles AFCON Chances by tundetech3: 10:43am On Oct 14, 2023
Jose Peseiro believes the Super Eagles can add another AFCON title to Nigeria's trophy cabinet.

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has discussed the chances of his team winning another African Cup of Nations trophy

The Portuguese tactician is convinced that his side has enough in their arsenal to deliver Nigeria's first continental title in over a decade.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been drawn in a very tight group A, with the likes of Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guine-Bissau.

Nigeria would be aiming to claim another African Cup of Nations trophy, with the last coming in 2013 when the late Stephen Keshi led Nigeria to glory, defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in Johannesburg.

During an exclusive interview with the SkySports, Jose Peseiro said, "We can win it. The players know it. They come with the same energy, the same belief, to fight for the Super Eagles."

Osimhen can make the difference - Peseiro
The former Real Madrid assistant coach believes that anything is possible with in-form Napoli striker Victor Osimhen leading the line for the Super Eagles.

"With Victor Osimhen around, anything is possible," Jose Peseiro stated.

Nigeria has an abundance of big-game players in their ranks - Victor Osimhen helped Napoli to a first Scudetto win since Diego Maradona.

Victor Boniface is the current top goalscorer in the German Bundesliga, while Taiwo Awoniyi helped Nottingham Forest escape relegation last season.

Haruna Lookman is banging in the goals in Serie A, and Samuel Chukwueze's great form for Villarreal last time out saw AC Milan dole out the cash for his services.

Winning AFCON would be challenging - Peseiro admits
However, Jose Peseiro has admitted that his team has some challenges. He said his side must be at their very best to stand any chance of winning because other African countries won't be a walk in the park.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played out a 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia on Friday during an international friendly, with the African team ending a run of three consecutive wins.

It was evident that the goalkeeping department remains a major concern for the three-time AFCON champions.

Francis Uzoho's horler gifted Saudi Arabia a goal in a game Nigeria thoroughly controlled.

The Super Eagles rallied back, courtesy of a glorious strike from Kelechi Iheanacho, which put Nigeria 2-1 up, but a late freekick from the Green Falcons earned them a draw.
