Sports / There Are Too Many 'yahoo Yahoo' Athletes In Nigeria: AFN President Laments by tundetech4: 10:38am On Aug 26, 2023
Tonobok Okowa, the president of the Nigerian Athletics Federation, has raised alarm over new allegations linking Nigerian athletes to fraudulent activity in the United States.

Many Nigerian athletes have been accused of indulging in fraudulent activity and are set to face years in prison.

Mercy Abire, a 28-year-old long jumper from Nigeria who currently resides in the United States, is at risk of serving a lengthy 20-year prison term after admitting guilt to a conspiracy to launder money, or "yahoo yahoo" in local slang.

These recent issues have caused the AFN president to speak out saying that Nigerian athletes are going into fraud.

Nigerian Athletes involved in fraudulent activities
Abire was charged with wire and mail fraud in the US together with two other Nigerian athletes, Raymond Ekevwo, the current African Games men's 100-metre champion, and Aniekeme Etimwere.

Between November 2018 and April 2019, Abire sent over $100,000 to co-conspirators using her US bank account, according to a statement from the US Attorney's Office as reported by The Punch.

Abire and her co-conspirators allegedly employed online charity scams, online romance scams, and other sorts of fraud between 2018 and 2022 to swindle victims of their money, according to court documents and material presented.

The court revealed as reported by The Punch, “The money received as a result of these scams was then transferred between the conspirators, and ultimately, much of the money was transferred overseas.

“Between November 2018 and April of 2019, Abire herself transferred over $100,000.00 to co-conspirators through her US bank account.”

The maximum jail term for the long jumper is 20 years, and the verdict is anticipated on August 30.

AFN President statement
The AFN President Okowa has spoken about the recent accusation about Nigerian athletes getting involved in fraud during an interview.

Okowa spoke to The PUNCH on the worrying trend, he said, “It’s very unfortunate that this is happening. Children nowadays, a lot of them are all about this ‘yahoo yahoo’ trend, I don’t know what they are doing.

“The truth is, if anybody goes out there as a Nigerian, not as an athlete, and they commit a crime, both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria, they are liable for it, so it is up to them. Let them deal with the authorities in the country wherever they are.”

Sunday Adeleye, a former technical director for the AFN, shared Okowa's remarks and emphasised the value of education and discipline in halting the trend.

He said, “If someone has a criminal tendency, what can you do as a federation? They pass through us just briefly. We start training some of them while they are kids but some of them join when they are already old, so what do you do?

“We just have to keep talking to them and trying to see how we can make them understand that this is not the right way to go and then maybe training and education is very important.”

Adeleye ask the Nigerian Government to act fast
Adeleye ascribed the trend's prevalence to a larger socio-economic issue in Nigeria and urged the government to act quickly to stop this scourge.

He continued, “It’s a ‘yahoo yahoo’ trend, it’s all over Nigeria, it’s not a hidden thing. It’s something that’s happening everywhere right now in Nigeria.

“The government must really step up in terms of seeing how we can curb this menace because it’s already a big menace in society.”

Sports / We Don't Owe You — NFF To Super Falcons As NASS Demand Payment Slips by tundetech4: 4:29pm On Aug 25, 2023
The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and the Super Falcons have been on a head-to-head battle about FIFA money, but the governing has now responded.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has confirmed that the Nigeria Super Falcons have been paid by the body.

Pulse Sports Nigeria can report that the President of the body, Ibrahim Gusau, revealed this during his appearance before the ad hoc committee of the National Assembly, NASS.

The lower chamber of the NASS, the House of Representatives, is investigating the non-payment of allowances and money due to Super Falcons players over the years.

Super Falcons’ pre-FIFAWWC complaints
Before the team’s brave performance at the ninth FIFA Women’s World Cup, FIFAWWC, the national women’s team complained about non-payment of their allowances amongst other things.

Led by coach of the team, Randy Waldrum, the NFF was quizzed about the 960, 000 given to Nigeria for making it to New Zealand and Australia.

As reported by Pulse Sports, Waldrum opened up a can of worms which led to a war of words between him and the NFF.

“I have a real close contact in the US that is very connected and on some of the boards at FIFA. This person told me, that in October, every country was given $960,000 from FIFA to prepare for the World Cup. Where is that money?” Waldrum queried back in June.

NFF responds
Waldrum’s comments led to reactions from the NFF and Nigerians, who were appalled by the actions of the NFF.

However, the football governing body has now defended itself, with claims that they don’t owe the players.

According to a report by Premium Times, Gusau noted that the said money was meant for the preparation of the team for the World Cup, not allowances which they have also paid the team.

“All the 32 nations that qualified for the World Cup were given $960,000 each for preparation for the World Cup,” Gusau told the NASS Committee.

“In January, we organised a training tournament of four nations — Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica and Nigeria. Every team used FIFA preparation money. The team was camped in Mexico and they were there for 13 days. In March, they were in Turkey for another training camp.

“The money was not given for the welfare of players but for preparing the team,’ he added. “We paid them allowances as per the tournament they participated in. We cannot use the preparation money to pay outstanding of qualifier matches.

“If the auditors of FIFA should see it, they will query us for that. The money was specific. We cannot use the money for a qualifier that was played in 2019,” he said.

Meanwhile, following claims by Mr Gusau that the NFF has cleared allowances including that of coach Waldrum, the House committee has demanded that the body provide payment slips and evidence dating back to 2019.

The head coach of Nigeria women’s volleyball team, Samuel Ajayi praised his players for exhibiting his spirit of sportsmanship throughout the Group stage and giving top rated teams a good fight.

Ajayi said, “I give kudos to my team for improving throughout the championship; I trust them because this is a new team. Most of the players are making their debut in the championship; I believe with continuity, they will build more confidence and rule Africa.

“The U-19 and U-21 players have potentials; some of them were a bit nervous facing top rated players and that was why I was giving them the needed morale on the touchline to believe in themselves”.

Sports / Lukaku Has No Future At Chelsea - Pochettino Insists Nothing Has Changed by tundetech4: 7:04pm On Aug 20, 2023
Mauricio Pochettino revealed he had not spoken to Romelu Lukaku and was unwilling to put any effort into the deadlock between the club and the player.

Lukaku joined Chelsea for £97.5 million from Inter Milan in 2021 but his second stint at the club quickly took a negative turn when the Belgian fell out with Thomas Tuchel.

Lukaku was sent on loan to Inter last season, but the Italian team decided against making his loan permanent.

Chelsea are still looking for a way to offload him with Pochettino confirming that he has no plans for him this season.

Pochettino talks about Lukaku's future
Pochettino had a press conference before their trip to West Ham speaking about the future of Romero Lukaku.

When questioned on Friday about Lukaku who is not participating in team training, as reported by Daily Mail Pochettino said, “Nothing has changed. I didn’t talk with him.

“The situation between the club and the player was clear before we arrived. For us, there is nothing to do.”

The Belgian has stated that he wants out of the club but Chelsea are struggling to find a team who will meet his valuation.

Juventus and Inter Milan have turned him down recently after failing to reach an agreement with Chelsea.

Pochettino continued, “You cannot put it on the club only. It is not only one side. It is two sides trying to find the best solution. The situation is what it is because the two sides have an agreement. We can’t change it.

“We were informed before signing [to become boss] about the situation with every single player. We need to be focused on the team. We can’t expend energy on a situation that was clear before we started here.”

Meanwhile, new signing Christopher Nkunku sustained a long-term injury and Chelsea are in the transfer market for a replacement.

Their recent transfer target Michael Olise has decided to remain at Crystal Palace after signing a new contract with the club.

In a swift turn of events, Olise is now expected to stay at Palace after he commited his immediate future to the club.

This was according to a post on social media from Palace Chairman, Steve Parish, who confirmed that Olise will remain an Eagles.

“I’m absolutely delighted to announce @m.olise has decided to commit his future to Crystal Palace football club and this afternoon,” Parish posted on his Instagram page.

According to him, Olise has penned a new four-year contract that will see him stay at Selhurst Park until the summer of 2027.

Sports / Super Eagles In Serie A: Can Osimhen Be Dethroned By Chukwueze Or Lookman? by tundetech4: 11:48am On Aug 17, 2023
The arrival of Samuel Chukwueze to compete with Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman in Serie A adds to the Nigerian interest in Italy’s top division. The trio should challenge for the European spots, leaving fans on the edge of their seats in 2023-24.

No sooner had Victor Osimhen claimed last season’s Capocannoniere than the Napoli striker must go again. This time, the centre-forward has company: Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman.

No sooner had Napoli won their first Scudetto title in 33 years than they must defend their title. Baring their fangs are the challengers, and there are many of them.

For anyone of a Nigerian persuasion, the interest in Serie A probably doubles in 2023-24.

History-making Osimhen vs history-chasing Osimhen
Osimhen was the competition’s adored player last term, and — despite the summer transfer window having a fortnight to run — it seems Italy’s top division should keep the centre-forward for another season.

This could be pivotal to a successful Scudetto defence, even if Napoli’s summer of change suggests another failed title defence is expected. No team has retained their crown since Juventus’ nine-year hegemony was halted by Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan in 2020-21.

Inter lost the title to their rivals AC Milan. Milan could not retain the crown last season, thus opening the door for Luciano Spalletti’s men to end a generation of disappointment.

Spalletti is no longer in situ, with the departed Tuscan replaced by Rudi Garcia in Naples. Garcia, a two-time Serie A runner-up, looks to be the first manager to retain the Scudetto for any side since Maurizio Sarri’s success in 2020.

Pivotal to all that is Osimhen, whose potential at the club reached new levels under Spalletti, who intermittently extolled the Nigerian’s “stratospheric talent”.

The centre-forward was a beneficiary of Spalletti’s penchant for drawing out goals from his central strikers — but it remains to be seen if the new Napoli boss is as successful with the erstwhile Lille man.

Osimhen became the first African to claim the Capocannoniere last season, but no player has retained the top-scorer award since Antonio Di Natale in 2010-11.

The Napoli marksman broke the mould in 2022-23, and he has to do it again to become only the second player in this millennium and the third since 1990 — Giuseppe Signori (1992-93 and 93-94) and Di Natale (2009-10 and 10-11) — to end atop the scoring charts in consecutive seasons.

Nobody foresaw Napoli’s Serie A success last term, especially after they lost Lorenzo Insigne, Kalidou Koulibaly and Dries Mertens in one window. Nobody predicted Osimhen’s ascent to winning the Capocannoniere, even if his potential was acknowledged.

Both have lost that element of surprise, and the league is aware of the threat they possess. Stopping a successful title defence falls on the rest of the competition, with AC Milan perceived to be leading that race to challenge the Partenopei.

Samuel Chukwueze’s AC Milan ambition
Chukwueze’s unveiling at Milan was welcome in Lombardy, and the forward revealed he spoke with Osimhen before moving to Italy.

Part of Milan’s heavy recruitment drive after Sandro Tonali’s sale to Newcastle United, the former Villarreal man will be pivotal to Stefano Pioli’s team, whose best plays come in their attacking transitions.

An overreliance on Rafael Leao got to a head last term, with the Rossoneri lacking real bite without the Portuguese in the team, effectively contributing to a meek Champions League semi-final exit against Inter.

Tonali was a saleable asset that the Rossoneri have used in strengthening qualitatively and quantitatively to push Napoli in 23-24. 13 points separated Inter and Juventus in 21-22; the Nerazzurri ended the following season two points adrift of Milan.

Finishing 20 points adrift of the Partenopei was statistically the worst Scudetto defence in those three years after Juventus’ dethronement, and Milan look placed to be resurgent in the imminent season.

Acquiring a player who was involved in 24 goals in all competitions last season theoretically elevates Milan. Chukwueze was set for the next level, and it should make for good viewing to see how it all translates in Serie A.

Milan seem to be the best-equipped side to battle Napoli, but they are not alone, with Atalanta again in the conversation to punch above their weight.

Are we sleeping on Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta?
It will be remiss to ignore Lookman, who begins year two in Serie A in far better condition than last season.

Lookman joined Atalanta from Leicester City just nine days before La Dea’s campaign started, but it did not prevent the former Everton man from scoring on his debut against Sampdoria in gameweek one.

This time, the 25-year-old had a more settled off-season in Bergamo, finding the back of the net three times across the team’s tune-ups as he seeks to start positively after petering out at the backend of last season.

Lookman’s 13th and final goal of 22-23 came on April Fool’s Day against Cremonese, even if he set up two goals in the run-in — taking him to 19 goals plus assists in Serie A alone. Despite the late-season drop-off, the Super Eagle enjoyed an encouraging first year in Italy.

With Duvan Zapata battling injury and Luis Muriel unable to influence games as much, Gian Piero Gasperini called upon other squad members to be decisive to ease the burden on Lookman and Rasmus Hojlund.

The latter has now been sold to Manchester United, with El Bilal Toure arriving from Almeria and Gianluca Scamacca returning to Italy after a below-par season in the Premier League and a loan deal for Charles De Ketelaere confirmed.

It remains to be seen if Lookman’s game time will be reduced in the new term. But last season’s contributions put the Nigerian first in line to play as Atalanta competes domestically and in the Europa League.

Like Milan, Atalanta look to have bolstered their squad after selling a prized asset, making the Bergamaschi favoured to surpass expectations in 23-24.

If last term’s top-four tussle is an indicator of anything, this year should throw up additional curveballs in the Champions League joust.

Juventus, uninvolved in European competition, are tipped to contend under Massimiliano Allegri.

Jose Mourinho is expected to push for the coveted spots after two years outside the Champions League, even if the Giallorossi have had to go after bargain deals in the transfer market, while both Milan clubs form the rest of the teams looking to usurp Napoli.

No player in Serie A scored more goals than Osimhen’s 26, nor did anyone outdo the striker’s seven match-winning strikes.

The Napoli man should be a protagonist this term, seeking to guide the Partenopei to another Scudetto. He should face stiff competition, with Chukwueze and Lookman providing that for Milan and Atalanta, respectively.

The new Serie A campaign will be all shades of fun due to the marginal difference in technical quality among the league's leading sides, thus precipitating another tussle for the competition's fancied spots.

For anyone of a Nigerian persuasion, the presence of three potentially pivotal characters jostling at the top of the table means there is a level of investment in this year’s outcome than in previous years.

And that is undoubtedly a good thing.

Sports / UEFA Super Cup: Manchester City Collect Another Trophy Beating Wasteful Sevilla by tundetech4: 10:44pm On Aug 16, 2023
Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have have won the UEFA Super Cup by defeating Sevilla in penalty shootouts.

After a pulsating 90 minutes in which both teams got on the scoresheet, but could not find the winner, It was Manchester City who are crowned the UEFA Super Cup champions via penalty shootouts.

The Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Greece was the location of the meeting of champions, which needed the uncertainties of a penalty shootout for a winner to emerge.

How it happened
The Champions League winner looked to dominate possession from the start of the game, but they struggled to break down Sevilla's deep block.

The Europa League champions, on the other hand, were content with exploiting the space left behind the sojourning Manchester City defence.

It was Sevilla who scored the opening goal of the game, thanks to an incredible leap by Youssef En-Nesyri. Guardiola's side pressed for an equaliser throughout the rest of the half but struggled to break down their opponents.

Manchester started the second-half in control but soon got sloppy again. It was turnover after turnover, and Ocampos made the most in transitions, but in two instances, En Nesyri finished poorly, Sparing Manchester City's blushes.

Sevilla continued to look dangerous in transitions but failed to grab a second. Manchester City soon punished their profligacy in the 63rd minute when Cole Palmer headed in a clipped pass from Rodri.

Manchester City, buoyed by the equaliser, pushed for a winner, but the Rojiblancos held on, forcing penalty shootouts.

The shootout
Manchester City had the first attempt, and Erling Haaland made no mistake, burying the ball at the back of the net. Ocampos stepped up for Sevilla, and like the Norwegian before him, he slid the ball coolly in the opposite direction of the goalkeeper.

Manchester City went perfect with their next four attempts. Sevilla went close too, but for a blemish at the end when a Nemanja Gudelj strike crashed against the top bar. The miss saw the Champions League winners win the shootout 5-4, consequently, the tie.

Brazilian superstar Neymar has officially completed a move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal and is set to earn up to $300 million during his two-year stay at the Saudi Pro League side.

Neymar joins Al-Hilal after torrid PSG spell
The 31-year-old forward was keen to leave Paris Saint Germain after six years at the club, where he suffered from injuries and off-pitch problems with the club’s hierarchy and fans.

Towards the end of the 2022/23 season, Neymar’s house in Paris was beset by fans who demanded his departure from the club, and their pleas appear to have been the final straw for the Brazilian, who put in a transfer request this summer.

After rumours of a potential return to Barcelona, which he left to join PSG, Neymar eventually chose to join Al-Hilal, who were able and willing to pay his €90m transfer fee, unlike the Blaugrana, who are financially strapped at the moment.

The Brazilian signed a two-year contract with Al-Hilal until 2025 and will earn a base salary of $300m, which could rise to $400 million depending on marketing returns.\

Sports / Man United Vs Wolves: Officials Involved In VAR Blunder Dropped by tundetech4: 2:04pm On Aug 15, 2023
Referee, Video Assistant Referee, and Assistant VAR from last night's Manchester United victory over Wolves have reportedly been dropped from next weekend's round of Premier League fixtures after controversial penalty decision.

The match officials involved in Manchester United's victory over Wolves have reportedly been suspended following a controversial penalty decision.

The Red Devils beat the visitors 1-0 thanks to a Raphael Varane header in the 76th minute of the game; however, Wolves had a penalty call in the 6th minute of second-half injury time that was contentiously not given.

What happened
Wolves, in an attempt to find a late equaliser late in the game, led a flurry of attacks towards the Manchester United goal, and it seemed to bear fruit when Andre Onana clattered against Craig Dawson in the box, inviting a VAR inquiry.

However, despite a VAR check into what looked like clear contact, referee Simon Hooper declined to give a penalty, to the disapproval of many.

Following the game, Wolves boss Gary O'Neil confirmed that former referee Jonathan Moss, who now holds a post at the PGMOL, confessed to him that a penalty should have been given for the incident, further sparking flames of discontent against the officiating on the day.

The refereeing body has now seemingly meted out punishment to the officials who were involved in the misjudgment.

Officials suspended
According to a report by Sky Sports this morning, the match officials involved in last night's game—referee Hooper, Video Assistant Referee Michael Salisbury, and assistant VAR Richard West—have been dropped from next weekend's round of Premier League matches.

This is not the first time the body has come out to admit wrongdoing; last season, referee Lee Mason faced punishment for a blunder committed in a match between Arsenal and Brentford.

It remains to be seen if the officials will face further disciplinary action, but as the Wolves boss said, the erred team feel aggrieved all the same, as there are no measures to rectify results influenced by bad referee calls.

Colombia international Moises Caicedo has reportedly turned down the proposal from Liverpool, as he only wants to join Chelsea.

The Brighton defensive-midfielder has been the subject of several transfer links to a number of clubs, as well as bids, but London giants Chelsea were closest for most of the transfer saga.

Liverpool reach agreement for Caicedo

Sports / Tottenham Finally Accept Bayern Munich Bid For Harry Kane - Pulse Sports by tundetech4: 1:40pm On Aug 10, 2023
Bayern Munich have finally had their bid for Harry Kane accepted by Tottenham after both parties reached an agreement.

The German giant has been on the radar of England International and have been hit back with a rejection after several attempts.

Harry Kane has only one year left on his contract and could leave on a free transfer next summer.

However, despite several rejected bids for the Englishman, Tottenham have finally accepted Bayern’s recent offer for Harry Kane

Bayern come to terms with Spurs
Tottenham and Bayern have been in negotiations for a few weeks regarding the drawn-out transfer of Kane to Munich, and a deal close to £100 million has now been reached.

Kane must now decide whether he wants to move to Germany or stay with Spurs after it became apparent that the England captain was leaning toward doing so.

Bayern reportedly failed with their third bid, for £86 million, put up last week, according to Daily Mail.

Levy rates the legendary striker at £120 million, but well-placed sources claim that a bid of around £100 million might lure the club into offloading a player who will be free to leave in the summer.

However, according to a recent report from Daily Mail, both parties continued their discussion on a possible transfer and Bayern made an increased offer worth £95 million which has been accepted.

As of right now, Bayern has satisfied all requirements to sign Kane, who would earn somewhere around £400,000 per week with the German powerhouses.

Despite both parties reaching an agreement, Kane still needs to decide if he wants to remain at Tottenham or move to Bayern Munich.

Sports / Revealed! How Disloyal Lukaku Betrayed Inter Milan- Pulse Sports by tundetech4: 10:41am On Aug 09, 2023
Romelu Lukaku has been accused of betrayal by Inter Milan socios and the club president.

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has incured the wrath of Inter Milan fans after deciding not to join the Serie A club this summer.

Inter pursued a deal with Chelsea for the Belgian forward throughout the summer, despite Chelsea's reluctance to allow him leave on loan.

He scored 10 goals in Serie A last after struggling with injury niggles, only returning to his swashbuckling best towards the end of the campaign.

Lukaku's Inter Milan betrayal
Inter had been pushing to re-sign Lukaku permanently until it became evident that he was holding transfer talks with arch-rivals Juventus behind the club’s back.

At this point, the Nerazzurri cut off contact with the No.9, with fans livid at the behaviour of the 30-year-old.

Now sporting director Javier Zanetti has moved to admonish the striker in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Lukaku has betrayed us. We’re very disappointed,” he frankly admitted.

“We expected completely different behaviour by Romelu, as professional but also as a man.”

Inter have now moved on from Lukaku and are exploring deals for Arsenal's Folarin Balogun and Porto striker Mehdi Taremi, who has also been linked with a move to Manchester United.
