Sports / ‘We Go Need Calculator’ - Nigerians React To AFCON 2023 Draw by tundetech4: 10:20am On Oct 13, 2023
The Super Eagles drew hosts Ivory Coast as well as Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau

Nigerians have expressed skepticism over the Super Eagles' chances of making it out of the group stage of the 2023 AFCON tournament after the competition draw held earlier today.

Nigeria get tricky AFCON draw
The Super Eagles were drawn in Group A alongside hosts Ivory Coast, as well as the tricky pair of Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau.

Nigeria have faced the Ivory Coast six times at the AFCON, coming out on top three times and losing twice. They will also be familiar with Guinea Bissau from the qualifying rounds of the 2013 edition after suffering a shock loss to the Djurtus in Abuja.

The Super Eagles have also played against Equatorial Guinea twice, winning both ties during World Cup qualifiers ahead of the 2010 tournament, but will be wary as the Elephants pose a different prospect more than a decade later.

Nigerians react to AFCON 2023 draw
After the draw conducted in Ivory Coast pitted the hosts against the Super Eagles, Nigerians have had varied reactions to the prospect of playing the Orange Elephants after recent unpleasant encounters.

Some fans were keen to test Nigeria’s might against one of the best teams in the land and were even confident that the Super Eagles could cause an upset by finishing above the host nation.

While other fans were despondent, and predicted that the Super Eagles would require permutations and combinations at the end of the group stage to see if they would sneak into the knockout round.

Nigeria will open their AFCON 2023 proceedings in January 2024 against Equatorial Guinea before facing Guinea Bissau and Ivory Coast.

'We are Nigeria' - Mikel Obi backs Super Eagles to outshine Cote d'Ivoire in tough AFCON group

For the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have been placed in Group A with the hosts, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.

The tournament will be hosted in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire, from January 13 to February 11, 2024. The draw ceremony was conducted there.

Nigeria topped its qualifying group with 15 points, scoring 22 goals in the process.

This achievement included a stunning 16-0 aggregate victory over Sao Tome & Principe.

Nigeria, which has won the AFCON three times in a row (in 1980, 1994, and 2013), will try to win it again and have branded Let's Do It again.

Mikel Obi on AFCON draw
Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi was one of the draw assistants for the AFCON.

Mikel voiced his belief that the Super Eagles had a solid chance of winning the championship.

He said, “We are in a tough group, but when we come to this tournament, we’re always favorites.

“There’s a lot of tough teams here, but we are Nigeria aren’t we.”

Between Nigeria and Ivory Coast, there have been 27 official meetings, 8 of which took place during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Both sides have recorded three victories in their head-to-head matchups at the AFCON, while they have also agreed to two draws.

At the 34th Cup of Nations, holders Senegal, Morocco, the team that finished fourth in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Egypt, a side that has won the competition seven times, and Algeria, the 2019 Cup of Nations champions, will all compete for the continent's most coveted football trophy.

The Super Eagles will begin preparation with a friendly game against Saudi Arabia on Friday, October 13 in Portugal.

Sports / Report: NFF Clarifies Randy Waldrum’s Sacking As Super Falcons Coach by tundetech4: 2:17pm On Sep 12, 2023
Randy Waldrum has reportedly received his sack letter as Super Falcons coach, but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has come out to clarify the situation.

The NFF has denied rumours that the body has sacked Randy Waldrum as Super Falcons coach.

Waldrum’s position as Super Falcons coach has been unclear since he called out the NFF just before the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Waldrum's position with the NFF
The American tactician criticised the NFF for failing to prepare the Super Falcons adequately for the Women’s World Cup and also called the organisation out for failing to pay his and the players’ wages.

Waldrum took the team to the 2023 Women’s World Cup, leading the team to an impressive round of 16 finish, with the Super Falcons losing to eventual finalist England only on penalties.

Waldrum is still Super Falcons' coach
Nonetheless, despite his impressive achievement, his future remained uncertain after the tournament.

Reports then emerged earlier this week that the American tactician had been sacked as Super Falcons coach.

However, the NFF has now come out to deny the report, saying the body has not reached a decision on the future of the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers women's soccer team.

According to popular NPFL journalist Adepoju Tobi, the NFF is still deliberating on the future of Waldrum

Waldrum’s current contract as Super Falcons coach expires next month, but with the Olympic qualifiers coming up soon, the NFF could consider handling the American a contract extension.

The body has already extended the contract of Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro until after the AFCON and could follow the same route with Waldrum.

Sports / 'I Want To Play At Another World Cup' - Ahmed Musa Insists He’s Not Retiring Yet by tundetech4: 11:00am On Sep 08, 2023
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has spoken out for the first time after he was left out of the squad to face Sao Tome and Principe in Nigeria’s final AFCON qualifier.

Sivasspor and Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa has insisted that it is not yet time for him to call it quits with the national side.

Coach Jose Peseiro left out captain Ahmed Musa and decided to give a first call-up to Gent striker Gift Orban and Bayer Leverkusen attacker Victor Boniface- both of whom have been in sensational form, scoring goals for fun.

It was gathered that Ahmed Musa picked up an injury during a league game for his Turkish side Sivasspor back in August 8 when they drew 1-1 with Samsunspor.

Even though he will be absent when Nigeria take on Sao Tome and Principe, Musa believes that the Super Eagles have enough firepower to emerge victorious.

I want to play in another World Cup - Ahmed Musa
However, Musa revealed to the Punch that he will be back for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which begins in November.

He said he has a dream of featuring at another FIFA World Cup with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The Super Eagles will battle the likes of Benin, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe in Group C of the FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Ahmed Musa says 2022 AFCON will be his last
The former Leicester City forward told the BBC that he would not play in another African Cup of Nations after the 2022 edition, which will take place in Cote D’Ivoire between January and February 2023.

He added that he would like to win the upcoming AFCON with the Super Eagles of Nigeria - finishing on a high.

Ahmed Musa’s continued invitation to the national team has been a concern to many fans who believe that the 30-year-old has achieved so much and must give room to younger players.

Some others have also pointed out that Ahmed Musa has not enjoy a decent playing time in the last two seasons but at club and country and that he should read the room and say his goodbyes.

Sports / Sacked Spain Head Coach Refusing To Leave Post - Pulse Sports by tundetech4: 10:23am On Sep 08, 2023
Despite the FA already naming a replacement, the ex-Spain boss has stated his intention to stay in the role until 2028

Dismissed Spain gaffer Jorge Vilda has said that he will fight his recent dismissal as head coach of the women’s national team despite the Spanish FA already naming a replacement for the World Cup winner.

Vilda refuses to back away from Spain national team job

Vilda was asked to leave by the RFEF’s new board shortly after guiding Spain to its maiden Women’s World Cup title with victory in Australia and New Zealand due to his fractious relationship with the players, which threatened to derail their World Cup ambitions.

The new board, which took over the reins of the RFEF after the suspension of President Luis Rubiales by FIFA following the administrator’s refusal to resign for his role in the Kiss Gate scandal, saw fit to axe Vilda, despite the coach being offered a new contract by the suspended FA chief.

Vilda refuses to accept the dismissal, however, as he believes that the deal that he was offered by Rubiales, which should have lasted until 2028, is still valid.

Vilda willing to fight RFEF for unfair sacking
The World Champion has said that he will fight the termination in conjunction with his lawyers, and told Radio Marca, “I consider myself a coach until 2028. This is what my lawyers tell me and even more so when there was already a prior and consensual agreement in the Assembly,"

"In the Assembly, it was said publicly, but previously that contract had been perfected with a four-year renewal."

During Rubiales’ last general assembly as RFEF president, the now-suspended official announced that a contract would be given to Vilda, with many suggesting the head coach stood to earn €500,000 per year, more than the highest paid player on his team, Alexia Putellas earns at European Champions Barcelona.

Vilda applauded the announcement of his new contract, as well as the president’s speech declaring that he would not resign, with his behaviour now seen as support for Rubiales, and one of the reasons he was dismissed.

While men slept, Hakimi was allegedly enjoying some x-rated videos

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has come under fire for reposting an adult video on social media platform X, previously known as Twitter amidst fears that the Moroccan star was hacked.

Adult video pops up on Hakimi’s X feed
In the late hours of Wednesday, a post from a pornographic Twitter account popped up on Hakimi’s Twitter feed after apparently being retweeted by the defender.

The repost stayed up on Hakimi’s account through the night, leading to suggestions that the 2022 World Cup star had been hacked and was unable to undo the repost.

However users on X have still put the 25-year-old defender on the grill for having the post on his account, given his stance as a devout Muslim.

X users slam Hakimi for x-rated repost
Users who saw the retweet on Hakimi’s account have asked how it was possible that he has the post from the well known pornographic account, with some assuming the PSG star is a closet fan of their work who accidentally retweeted a post.

Others have debated whether Hakimi was hacked, with the culprits playing a cruel prank on the Morocco international.

Hakimi is no stranger to controversy after the Ligue 1 star went viral for allegedly putting his assets in his mother’s name to avoid paying for a costly divorce.

Those rumours have been found to be more fairytale than reality, but the Moroccan full back has still earned a cult following for his perceived actions.

FIFA banned Siasia from all football activities for life in August 2019 and fined him $50,000 for admitting to match manipulation.

Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has revealed that he has learned his lessons while away from football.

Pulse Sports reported that the World Football governing body, FIFA, banned Siasia from all football activities for life in August 2019 and fined him $50,000 for admitting to match manipulation' for betting purposes.

FIFA banned Siasia from football following an intensive investigation into attempted match-fixing by Wilson Perumal and the Nigerian coach.

Following Siasia's appeal, the ban was reduced to five years by the Court of Arbitration for Sports in 2021, with the ban set to lapse in August 2024.

'I have learned my Lessons' - Siasia
The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner is eager to return to football.

“I thought I was going to be free by this year (2023), and I was so excited,” Siasia said in a radio interview on Kennis 104.1FM monitored by Punch correspondent.

“But I had to look through the document that FIFA served me, and I found out that it was going to be next year. By next year, in August 2024, I will be free from the FIFA ban, and hopefully I will be back to football.

The former U-23 gaffer continued, “Irrespective of what happened, I have learned my lessons, but FIFA, who initially gave me a life ban in football, could not prove anything wrong with what they claimed I did. But they had to reduce it to a five-year ban, and it will expire next year. I thank God for that.

“It has been terrible to be away from football for five years, but I am preparing myself to come back to football, so I have to prepare myself so I can start ‘running’ once I resume by next year," he concluded

Following his excellent form for the Italian champions, Osimhen remains a hot property with several top European clubs keeping close tabs on him.

According to a report by Football Transfers, one of the clubs Arsenal have already held talks as they look to sign the Nigerian striker ahead of deadline day.

Arsenal’s sporting director Edu Gaspar has reportedly contacted Napoli’s owner Aurelio De Laurentiis to enquire about the possibility of luring their star man away from Naples.

The move by the Gunners is in a bid to help manager, Mikel Arteta build on their title charge last season with the addition of a world class forward.

Arteta sees for the former LOSC Lille man as the ideal striker to lead his Arsenal side as they look to challenge defending champions Manchester City for the Premier League title again.

While Arsenal and Arteta are huge admirers, it is rather unlikely that Osimhen will depart Napoli on deadline day.

The Nigerian superstar looks set to remain at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, where he still has two years left on his current contract.

Sports / ICC Declares Nigeria As The Fastest-growing Cricket Nation - Pulse Sports by tundetech4: 10:26am On Aug 31, 2023
The trophy was on display at the Tafawa Balewa Cricket Oval in Lagos on Wednesday, following the first leg of the tour in Abuja on Tuesday.

Following the colorful reception for the Cricket World Cup trophy on Wednesday in Lagos, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has thrown its weight behind the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) in making the country the fastest-growing cricket nation in the world.

Nigeria, along with South Africa and Uganda, has been chosen to participate in the trophy procession ahead of the ODI World Cup, which will be held in India from October 5 to November 19.

The trophy was on display at the Tafawa Balewa Cricket Oval in Lagos on Wednesday, following the first leg of the tour in Abuja on Tuesday.

General Manager of Development, ICC, William Glenwright, who was accompanied to Nigeria by the ICC Regional Development Manager in Africa, Patricia Kambarami, said Nigeria was a top priority in spreading the game.

“Nigeria is our fastest growing member around the world. We came to learn from the NCF to better understand what they are doing successfully and apply it elsewhere around the world so that other members can be equally successful as Nigeria,” Glenwright told The PUNCH.

“It’s also for us to better understand the ways the international federation can support Nigeria in their growth. They have great plans and we have a role to play

On his part, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata, said the board will not desist in its efforts to guarantee that the country benefits from its gaming development objective.

“With the grand entrance and the celebration that greeted the trophy here, imagine what will happen if we actually win the World Cup; a lot of my people say we will shut down Lagos.

“So, we are looking towards improvement in that direction. We are strategically placed as we continue discussions with Cricket South Africa in terms of players placement. It’s a pathway in terms of sustainable development. We have seen it, it’s just for us to walk our way through the path.”

Sports / You Have 3 Days To Accept Pay Cut Or Quit - NFF Tells Super Eagles Coach Peseiro by tundetech4: 7:49pm On Aug 30, 2023
The NFF has reportedly told Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro to take a pay cut or leave.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly issued an ultimatum to Nigerian men's national team coach Jose Peseiro to take a pay cut.

The 63-year-old Portuguese coach took the Super Eagles job in May last year after Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup.

After nine games in the role, with four wins and five defeats, he has managed to qualify Nigeria for the African Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast next year.

His contract, however, expired at the end of July, but according to reports, he is staying in the role due to his love for the job.

What happened
According to reports, the NFF has issued a condition to the former Porto coach before signing him to a new deal.

The chairman of the Technical and Development Committee of the NFF, Alhaji Sheriff Rabiu Inuwa, is said to have disclosed that the federation issued Peseiro a three-day ultimatum to accept a pay cut.

Peseiro's initial contract had him earning $70,000 monthly, and he reportedly pays his staff from it.

The NFF, however, have explained that they can no longer afford to pay that much, and if he refuses to take a pay cut, they will end their relationship with him.

“The Technical Committee has given him [Peseiro] three days to respond to our proposed pay cut or we disengage him finally,” Alhaji Sherrif said, according to Complete Sports.

“We will allow him to continue if he accepts a reduction in his 70,000 USD monthly salary and other conditions of service.

“If he turns down our proposal, we will consider appointing a coach to oversee the dead rubber game against Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo, then we start to search for a new substantive coach that the NFF can afford to pay his salary. ”

Sports / 'I Don’t Have Support' — Barcelona Striker Slams Xavi's Tactics by tundetech4: 10:18am On Aug 30, 2023
Barcelona team as the current set up does not favour him

Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski has criticised the system currently being employed by the Blaugrana under head coach Xavi Hernandez as he struggles to find scoring chances.

Lewandowski pines for attacking Barcelona
Lewandowski, under Xavi’s leadership, finished the 2022/23 season as LaLiga’s top scorer with goals as Barcelona claimed their first league title since the 2018/19 season, but the Polish striker has seemingly grown disillusioned with life upfront for the Blaugrana.

The 35-year-old forward has only scored once for Barcelona in three LaLiga starts this season, and told Mundo Deportivo that he believed the Blaugrana’s current tactics limit him, saying, “We are Barca and we are expected not only to win but to play good attacking football.

“Lately that has not been as it should be, so we have been fighting to create more chances in games… When we see Ferran come on or Ansu, two players who go forward, we create more chances. Sometimes we don’t play with enough attacking players, I don’t have support… so I look for the best solution for the team.”

Barcelona forward looking to improve Blaugrana team
Despite the setback, Lewandowski also noted that he has tried to find solutions, including dropping deeper to lose his markers and getting more involved in the build-up phase of the game.

Lewandowski said, “I think that with my experience, knowing my body, I look for the best solution not only for me but also for the team.

“I realise that sometimes if I’m between two centre-backs, it’s easier for the defenders. In many games, I don’t have many chances to score. In the last two games, I didn’t have many chances, I didn’t receive many balls, so sometimes I had to create my chances.”

The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund striker joined Barcelona in the 2022 summer transfer window and has scored 34 goals in 49 matches so far for the Blaugrana.

Sports / Super Eagle At Anfield? Liverpool Enter Race To Sign Wilfred Ndidi by tundetech4: 9:37am On Aug 30, 2023
Liverpool have reportedly entered the race to sign Leicester City's Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Ndidi has been one of Leicester's best players in recent years and was a regular starter in the squad that suffered the ignonimity of relegation from the Premier League last season.

The Nigeria international has kept his head down and pushed on to help the club regain their PL status but he could be offered a faster route back into the top flight if recent reports are to be believed.

Ndidi to Liverpool?

According to the Independent, Liverpool are mulling over a move for the Super Eagles holding midfielder in a bid to add depth to their thin midfield.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wants to add an enforcer and Ndidi would fit the bill perfectly.

A move could happen swiftly as the 26-year-old has less than 12 months left on his contract at the King Power, and a return to the top-flight would surely be too good to turn down.

Sports / Tobi Amusan Removed From The Starting List For Zurich Diamond League by tundetech4: 11:42am On Aug 29, 2023
Surprisingly Tobi Amusan has been removed from the women's 100m Hurdles start list at the Zurich Diamond League.

World Record holder Tobi Amusan is surprisingly missing from the starting list of the women's 100m Hurdles at the Zurich Diamond League.

Amusan lost her World title to Jamaica's Danielle Williams at the World Championships in Budapest, with Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn settling for the silver medal, and former WR holder Keni Harrison taking the bronze medal, while the Nigerian was sixth.

The 26-year-old former world champion was on the Zurich Diamond League list but has been removed for reasons unknown.

Amusan leads the Diamond League standings alongside US champion Nia Ali, which she could have extended if present in Zurich. Her absence gives room for other hurdlers who'll be competing to earn more points and perhaps surpass her.

World champion Williams tops the list of the stacked field in Zurich, as well as Camacho-Quinn and Harrison. Completing the list are Budapest finalists Devynne Charlton, Ditaji Kambundji, and Ali. While Tia Jones, Alaysha Johnson, and Pia Skrzyszowska.

Sports / Nigeria Football Federation Are Hindering Amazing Players- Says Ex-chelsea Star by tundetech4: 10:28am On Aug 29, 2023
The Super Eagles have their best crop of players in recent years but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has come under criticism for their lack of direction.
Former Chelsea youth star Kenneth Omeruo has hit out at the NFF over their lack of direction with the current Super Eagles squad.

Omeruo believes there are many talented players in Nigeria’s team, but the NFF is not helping the team with the uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation.

The Super Eagles play their final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe in September, but there is no clarification on who will be in charge of the team.

Jose Peseiro had been in charge of the previous games, but his contract expired last month, with the NFF yet to agree a new deal with him.

Although both parties are expected to hold talks over a new deal, they are unlikely to reach an agreement before the match next month.

As a result, Omeruo has criticised the NFF for failing to sort out the embarrassing situation, saying the players need a stable technical crew to perform like they do at their clubs. The former Middlesbrough man said this in an interview with Arise TV.

“When it comes to talent, Nigeria have amazing players,” the Turkey-based centre-back, told Arise TV.

“Even those that are on the bench in the national team go to their club sides and bang in goals week in, week out.

“We need to have a stable technical crew. A technical crew will take us to where we are supposed to be and give us exactly [the guidance] that we get in Europe.

“We do not even know who will be the coach in the next game. It is crazy, and it has to be fixed,” Omeruo added.

Nigeria play their final AFCON qualifier against Sao Tome on September 10. The three-time African champions have already secured their place in next year’s competition scheduled for January and February in Ivory Coast.

However, the Super Eagles begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying journey in November this year.

Sports / Chelsea Flop Mudryk Quotes Isaiah 41:10 As His Struggles Continue by tundetech4: 1:39pm On Aug 28, 2023
Chelsea mega signing Mykhailo Mudryk has reverted to the bible after struggling to make an impact since joining the Blues.

Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee worth £88.5 million after hijacking the deal from Arsenal.

The tricky winger has since then failed to hit the ground running and has not started any Premier League game but has only been used as a substitute.

The Chelsea star has recognised his struggle at the club and has posted a bible verse to help enhance his faith.

Mudryk quotes a bible verse
Last week, Mauricio Pochettino spoke highly of Mudryk, insisting that he can become a great player for Chelsea.

However, his poor performance since joining the Blues has left him being used mostly as a substitute in their games.

The Ukrainian has taken to social media to share a bible verse with the belief that only God can give him the strength to perform well for Chelsea.

He shared a picture on his Instagram story, with a bible verse saying, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

“I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41 vs 10.”

Mudryk’s post shows that he believes in God and has faith that God will turn things around for him.

According to the interpretation of the bible verse, Mudryk has been told by God not to be afraid of his performance at Chelsea and that he will strengthen him and uphold him with his right hand.

The 22-year-old is yet to start any game for Chelsea this season and has been only used as a substitute.

He will be looking to get more playing time from his manager after using the bible verse Isaiah 41 vs 10 as his support

Sports / Report: Mo Salah Has 'played' His Last Liverpool Game, Medical Booked by tundetech4: 1:27pm On Aug 28, 2023
According to reports, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah will leave the club after playing his last game against Newcastle.

Mo Salah has been linked with a move away from Liverpool in recent weeks with Al-Ittihad declaring an interest in the Egyptian.

This summer, Liverpool has already sold two players to the Saudi Pro League. Both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were permitted to leave Merseyside for huge sums of money.

As it stands they are close to losing another star player, with reports suggesting that the Egyptian would depart for medical and finalise a transfer to Al-Ittihad.

Salah’s move imminent
According to Riyadiyatv, a sports broadcaster in Saudi Arabia, Salah will finalise a transfer to Al-Ittihad and leave Anfield before the transfer window closes.

It is reported that Salah has played his last game for Liverpool against Newcastle and will fly to Dubai to undergo a medical.

Al-Ittihad declared their interest in Salah last week and a deal now seems very close to being completed.

According to Sport Italia as reported by Express.co, Salah had informed Liverpool he would desire to move to the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Ittihad are claimed to have put an offer on the table of more than £79 million for the 31-year-old.

According to the reports, Al-Ittihad set a deadline of Monday to determine whether a deal for Salah was feasible. The likelihood that they will be successful in their pursuit is growing.

After arriving from Roma in 2017, the attacker has made 307 appearances and scored an astonishing 187 goals for the team.

Salah has been crucial to Jurgen Klopp's success, which includes winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

Sports / Michelle Alozie: Coach Waldrum Made Me Smile When James Stamped On My Yansh by tundetech4: 10:53am On Aug 26, 2023
Super Falcons star Michelle Alozie explains why she smiled after Lauren James Stamped on her.

Super Falcons star Michelle Alozie has revealed her thought process during her heavily 'memed' moment, in which she was all smiles as Chelsea forward Lauren James stamped her backside.

What happened
Although Nigeria were eventually knocked out on penalties by the Three Lionesses, the Super Falcons came close to triumphing over their rivals, who were numerically inferior after James was sent off.

The former Manchester United forward was kept quiet for most of the game by the duo of Halimatu Ayinde and Alozie.

And in a show of frustration around the 83rd-minute mark, the 21-year-old stepped on Alozie as she walked over her after a tumble saw both players fall to the ground.

An aggressive reaction would have been understandable from the Houston Dash forward, but instead, the Super Falcons defender was all smiles.

Alozie explains why she smiled during the Lauren James stamps
In a conversation with Attacking Third, the 26-year-old was asked why she was calm throughout the situation.

Alozie explained that throughout the incident she kept recalling coach Randy Waldrum's warning that she risked suspension if she got another yellow card.

The Houston Dash star already picked up a yellow card in the group stage victory over Australia, and two yellow cards meant a suspension at the World Cup.

She explained that she wanted to avoid the risk of missing the next game should Nigeria qualify, and she trusted that VAR would vindicate her.

"Honestly, the only thing going through my head was coach Randy telling me maybe a thousand times before the game that I have a yellow card and I cannot get another one," she said.

"So literally, in that moment, when it happened, I was like, okay, she's definitely getting a red card. So I am just going to like, chill here.

"I was like, she must be getting a red card, so I am just not going to react, because if I react, I am probably going to go crazy, get a yellow card, and potentially be out for the next game.

"I was like, VAR better have my back, and it did.
