Cross paths with Ayanda Mbatyothi and you could be forgiven for thinking you have seen a ghost. The 37-year-old has minor celebrity status in South Africa as a Nelson Mandela lookalike. He performs his famous speeches, earns cheers at political rallies and, in a reference to the struggle hero's clan name, was once told by an aghast Mandela: "You are young Madiba." Now he is coming to terms with the death of the man he imitates and admires. "I couldn't believe it," he said last week in a voice spookily reminiscent of the late president's own. "Mandela is a true hero of the people. He fought black domination and white domination. He's like Jesus Christ. Maybe after three days God can bring back Mandela." Should that not transpire, Mbatyothi will have to do. "I'm going to be a reminder. People show their children: 'That's Mandela.'" He has no known blood ties to Mandela but like him is from the Xhosa people in Eastern Cape province. He recalls that 20 years ago he was campaigning for the African National Congress (ANC) and carrying a picture of Mandela when the resemblance became obvious. "People stopped me and said why do you look like that man?" In 1996 Mbatyothi, from a township in East London, came face to face with the then president Mandela himself. "They came to me and I shook the mighty hand. I mimicked him. He said: 'He looks like me. You are young Madiba.'" It has become Mbatyothi's trademark ever since. He set up a company called Young Madiba Productions which he says is involved in advertising and supplying stationery to the government. He has appeared in roadshows, a live performance in Europe and a South African comedy film. When he attends an ANC rally and his picture is projected on a big screen, the crowd erupts. In 2001, he says, he read Mandela's celebrated 1964 speech from the dock at an audition for the film adaptation of his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. Mbatyothi claims he won the audition and remains upset that, when the film was finally made a decade later, the lead role went to Britain's Idris Elba instead. "When you watch the Long Walk to Freedom movie, anyone can see they need an African person. Somebody who gets the poverty. You can't go to America and play Obama." Mbatyothi also does charity work, citing Mandela as his inspiration. "I became 'Ayanda and young Madiba'. People respect me because of him. I'll continue to follow in his footsteps. Every year I do a Christmas party for the community. They come and collect a food parcel and say: 'This is what young Madiba is doing for us.'" Over the years Mbatyothi has met Mandela's ex- wife Winnie and their daughter Zindzi as well as the South African president, Jacob Zuma. He says he will be at the funeral in Qunu on Sunday. "It's difficult to go and bury your twin. I've got all the pictures of Mandela because I miss him." Among the Mandela doppelganger's biggest fans is his manager, Xhobani Thole, who said: "He is a replica of the man during the treason trial. He can mimic him, he can smile like him. Not only does he look just like Madiba, but his passion for the old man you can't believe. He'll kill for the old man. "At the beginning of Long Walk to Freedom, he could have played the part in a more genuine way. I've said to him that now Mandela has died, there may be more opportunities coming up. Madiba's legacy will live forever."

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been ruled out for a month with a thigh strain. United manager David Moyes, whose side have lost their last two Premier League games, confirmed that the Netherlands international would be sidelined. He said Van Persie had suffered the injury while taking the corner that led to Phil Jones’ midweek Champions League winner against Shakhtar Donetsk at Old Trafford on Tuesday. "Robin van Persie is out for a month," he said. "He picked up a thigh strain in taking a corner kick which led to the goal." Moyes said it was "a big blow," adding: "It is unfortunate, because I think if you look at our record with Wayne Rooney and Robin in the team it is actually very good, and we have not had them for quite a period recently. "Marouane Fellaini has a bit of a back injury. Michael Carrick is missing, and Robin is going to miss four weeks with a thigh strain. That is a big blow to us." The United boss, who was without Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Chris Smalling for the Shakhtar game, said: "I have no doubt it will get better. "I am sure we have plenty of players who can cover it and we don't miss them too much." Source : www.soccernet.com |

President Goodluck Jonathan has declared three days of national mourning, starting on Friday, in honour of former South African President Dr. Nelson Mandela, his spokesman said today. In a condolence message to President Jacob Zuma, the Nigeria leader said Mandela’s death created a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill in Africa. “He will be sorely missed by all who cherish love, peace and freedom the world over and will be eternally honoured for his immense contribution to the dismantling of the apartheid policy, one of the world’s most obnoxious systems whose under-pining philosophy was the degradation of man by man.” Jonathan praised Mandela as a source of inspiration to the oppressed peoples of the world, citing his unparalleled personal sacrifices in the course of his life-long epic struggle for freedom, fairness, justice, equity and the human rights of all oppressed people. “The indefatigable spirit which he demonstrated throughout his life will continue to inspire present and future generations,” Jonathan said. “Dr. Mandela will always be remembered and honoured by all mankind as one of its greatest liberators, a wise, courageous and compassionate leader, and an icon of true democracy.” Flags will be flown at half-mast across Nigeria during the period of national mourning. President Jonathan urged Nigerians to unite in solidarity with the brotherly people of South Africa as they mourn the great liberator, freedom fighter and hero of the black race. He also called for special prayers in mosques and churches in Nigeria during the period of mourning for the peaceful repose of Dr. Mandela’s soul. Source : Saharareporters.com |

Nelson Mandela ducked out of an arranged marriage when he was a student, then went on to wed three times. His first two marriages collapsed under the strain of politics, but the third time around he found enduring happiness with the widow of Mozambican president Samora Machel. In sharp contrast to Graca Machel and his feisty second wife Winnie, Mandela's first wife was a demure country girl who kept well away from politics. photo Like him, Evelyn Wase hailed from the rural Transkei and had come to Johannesburg in the early 1940s to carve out a living in the big city. She was the cousin of African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Walter Sisulu and met Mandela in Sisulu's home in Soweto, southwest of Johannesburg, in 1944. They married months later, in the same year that Mandela, Sisulu and Oliver Tambo formed the ANC's Youth League and politics of struggle against white minority rule came to consume his life. Descriptions of their first years tell of Evelyn as the happy housewife with Mandela bathing their three babies and helping with the cooking when his work at his law practice and political meetings were done. But by 1954, Evelyn had buried herself in religion like her husband had in politics and bitterly resented his absences. When Mandela was arrested for treason the first time, he came home on bail to find Evelyn had gone, leaving behind their two youngest children. She returned to the Transkei, ran a shop and remarried in her seventies. Winnie came into Mandela's life at the start of a second treason trial, which would see him jailed for 27 years, and they married in June 1958. She too came from the country, but took to the city, and once she met Mandela, also dived into politics with alacrity. Soon after their wedding she was arrested for an incendiary speech, leading Mandela to remark - proudly and prophetically - "I think I married trouble." The couple had two daughters before the prison doors slammed behind Mandela in 1964. In the coming years Winnie would be in and out of jail as the police hounded her in a bid to demoralise him. In 1969, she was held in solitary confinement for 13 months on terrorism charges and in 1973 endured another six months in jail, but when the 1976 student riot revolt broke out in Soweto, Winnie was unbowed, urging crowds to "fight to the bitter end". The police saw her as a mastermind of the uprising. She was locked up for five months, then banished to the desolate town of Brandfort for seven years. When she returned to Soweto, the firebrand militant- martyr became a liability for Mandela and the anti- apartheid movement. In 1986, at a time when suspected traitors were being burned alive in the volatile townships, Winnie declared that South African blacks would be freed "with our matchboxes". She surrounded herself with a band of thugs christened the Mandela United Football Club who murdered a young activist called Stompie Sepei. Her bond with Mandela had endured through letters and visits to prison and when he was released in 1990, Winnie was there holding his hand, but in private she rejected him for a young lover. Mandela stood by her when she was convicted for kidnapping Sepei and only in 1992 announced their separation. Winnie's six-year sentence was suspended on appeal and in 1994 she was appointed a deputy minister in his government, but was later sacked for insubordination. By the mid-90s, Mandela was courting Graca Machel - a serious but warm woman 27 years younger than him who studied in Lisbon before she became a freedom fighter for Samora Machel's Frelimo movement, and eventually Machel's education minister and wife. Graca's first contact with Mandela came in 1986 when her husband died in an air crash many believe was orchestrated by the apartheid regime, and he wrote to her from prison. When they met in Mozambique's capital Maputo in 1990, Machel was still in mourning. But two years later Mandela became the godfather of her stepchildren and in 1996 they were spotted at President Robert Mugabe's wedding. Mandela was smitten and let the press in on their love story, telling reporters: "Late in life, I am blooming like a flower because of the love and support she has given me." On July 18, 1998 - Mandela's 80th birthday - Machel broke her vow that she would not marry another president. While clearly a proud husband, Mandela sometimes found it hard to keep pace with the younger woman. "She is busier than I am. We meet for lunch, go off and then only see each other again for supper. I wish I had married a wife who was less busy," he quipped to students at a ceremony in March 2007. |

Wale has been in Nigeria for close to a week now, and has done his rounds in visiting everywhere and everyone since its his first time ever in Nigeria. He’s taken time to visit some family members that ordinarily he never would’ve met had he not visited Nigeria, and one of those people is his grandfather. It also turns out that he’s related to hit producer Maleek Berry. |
