Celebrities / Jennifer Lopez And Ben Affleck Are Engaged Again by TwitterGists: 6:28pm On Apr 10, 2022
(CNN)Bennifer 2.0 is planning to take it to the altar.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have gotten engaged for a second time after calling off their prior pledge in 2004, a representative for Lopez confirmed to CNN Saturday.

Lopez shared a video of her appearing emotional and sporting her green engagement ring in her newsletter "On the JLo."

Her sister Lynda Lopez shared photos from the video on her Instagram Stories writing, "So this happened. Love you @jlo @ben affleck."

The couple met in 2001 on the set of the rom-com "Gigli," where they played criminals stuck on a job together, and they struck up a real-life friendship.

While the film flopped, Affleck told Entertainment Weekly in January that he didn't regret it because he "did get to meet Jennifer, the relationship with whom has been really meaningful to me in my life."

Affleck popped the question to Lopez in 2002 with a stunning pink diamond engagement ring.

But the pair postponed their nuptials days before the wedding in 2003, saying in a statement, "Due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding, we have decided to postpone the date."

"When we found ourselves seriously contemplating hiring three separate 'decoy brides' at three different locations, we realized that something was awry," the statement went on to say. "We began to feel that the spirit of what should have been the happiest day of our lives could be compromised. We felt what should have been a joyful and sacred day could be spoiled for us, our families and our friends."

In January 2004 they officially called things off.

Speculation mounted that the pair had rekindled their romance after she and baseball legend Alex Rodriguez ended their engagement in April 2021.

"I feel so lucky and happy and proud to be with him," Lopez told People magazine about reuniting with Affleck. "It's a beautiful love story that we got a second chance."

It will be the fourth marriage for Lopez, 52, and the second for Affleck, 49.

She was previously married to actor Ojani Noa, dancer Cris Judd and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares 14-year-old twins Max and Emme.

Affleck was married to actress Jennifer Garner and they are the parents of Violet, 16, Seraphina, 13, and Samuel, 10.

Politics / Bandits Attack Shimfida In Katsina. Kill 8 Children, Burn Houses. 5000 Displaced by TwitterGists: 11:44am On Mar 18, 2022
As shared by Freelance Journalist, Jamil Mabai:

While the Nigerian military were preparing to withdraw from Shimfida community in Jibia LG, locals pleaded with them to spare some minutes so they can mobilize their families and leave for safety. Witnesses told me the bandits terrorist began taking strategic points within sight.

Right before the army left, they began shooting, stampede followed, 8 children as a result died, currently over 5000 people have been displaced. Their houses and food burnt. A pregnant woman at the verge of labor was left stranded, disabled & elderly people are still in Shimfida.

Victims have taken shelter in a primary school sharing classes with students. Due to harmattan, classes are forced to hold outside while little children and the elderly are left in classes. Acute shortage of food, water, mats and blankets in the makeshift camp.

As we speak, bandits have taken control of Shimfida, law and order is at their discretion. The only road leading to the community have been taken by the bandits. They need for support to cater for their immediate needs.

Foreign Affairs / 7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan by TwitterGists: 6:41pm On Mar 16, 2022
TOKYO -- A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan on Wednesday evening, triggering a tsunami advisory and plunging more than 2 million homes in the Tokyo area into darkness.

The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 quake and tsunami 11 years ago that also triggered nuclear plant meltdowns.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no longer a tsunami threat though the Japan Meteorological Agency kept its low risk advisory in place. NHK national television said tsunami waves of 20 centimeters (8 inches) already reached shore in Ishinomaki, about 390 kilometers (242 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

NHK footage showed broken walls of a department store building fell to the ground and shards of windows scattered on the street near the main train station in Fukushima city.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, which operates the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant where the cooling systems failed after the 2011 disaster, said workers found no abnormalities at the site, which was in the process of being decommissioned.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that there were also no abnormalities at two other nuclear power plants in the area.

NHK TV reported that a fire alarm went off at the turbine building of No. 5 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi, while water pumps for the spent fuel cooling pool at two of the four reactors at Fukushima Daini stopped, though there was no immediate risk of overheating. The nuclear authority agency later said those problems were resolved.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit at 11:36 p.m. at a depth of 60 kilometers (36 miles) below the sea.

Japan's Air Self-Defense Force said it dispatched fighter jets from the Hyakuri base in Ibaraki prefecture, just south of Fukushima, for information gathering and damage assessment.

NHK said there were reports of fire, damage to buildings and falling rocks in Iitate town in Fukushima. There was no word on any casualties.

More than 2.2 million homes were without electricity in 14 northeastern prefectures including the Tokyo region, serviced by TEPCO and another utility, Tohoku Electric Power Co., according to the companies.

The quake shook large parts of eastern Japan, including Tokyo, where buildings swayed violently.

East Japan Railway Co. said most of its train services were suspended for safety checks. Some local trains later resumed service.

A Tohoku Shinkansen express train partially derailed between Fukushima and Miyagi due to the quake, but nobody was injured, NHK said.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters that the government was assessing the extent of damage and promised to do its utmost for rescue and relief operations.

“Please first take action to save your life," Kishida tweeted.

Matsuno said there were a number of emergency calls and local authorities were scrambling to assess damage.

“We are doing our utmost in rescue operations and putting people's lives first,” he said.

He urged residents in the affected areas to use extra caution for possible major aftershocks for about a week.
