In a statement the leader of the nation says that he is aware of all challenges that Nigeria is currently facing, noting that these problems are only temporary. Buhari once again promised Nigerians change in 2016, adding that he wanted to be a leader who initiates positive and enduring change. Read Buhari’s congratulatory statement in full below: “Fellow citizens, “Welcome to the beginning of a New Year of the continuation of CHANGE in our beloved nation. “I am aware that Nigerians have experienced a number of significant hardships over the past months. Living in the State House has not alienated me from your daily sufferings. I am aware of the lengthy queues at fuel stations and of the difficulties businesses have faced in acquiring foreign exchange. These challenges are only temporary; we are working to make things better. “When I presented myself to you as a presidential candidate and asked you to vote for me, I wanted to be a leader who keeps his promises. I wanted to be a leader who restores the people’s hope in those elected to serve them. I wanted to be a leader who initiates positive and enduring CHANGE. “I am still totally committed to being that kind of leader. Unforeseen circumstances and other distractions notwithstanding, I shall still do my utmost best to keep every promise I made to Nigerians during my election campaign. “In the past seven months since our inauguration on May 29, 2015, my administration has focused on laying the right foundation for the CHANGE you voted for during our historic presidential election. “Nigerians will in due course begin to enjoy the fruits of all our ongoing work. The effective and efficient implementation of our 2016 budget proposals will address many of the socio- economic issues that are of current concern to our people. “One area in which Nigerians, especially those in the northeast, have already begun to experience major CHANGE is in the war on terror. “I commend our Armed Forces for significantly curtailing the insurgency which has ravaged the northeast of Nigeria over the past few years. “However, there is still a lot of work to be done in the area of security. “Our Armed Forces will maintain, consolidate and build on their successes in the war against Boko Haram and violent extremism. This government will not consider the matter concluded until the terrorists have been completely routed and normalcy restored to all parts of the country that have been adversely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency. “Our crackdown on corruption will continue to be vigorously undertaken. I urge the courts to support our efforts and help in the recovery of stolen funds by speedily concluding trials and showing that impunity no longer has a place in our country. “There is much work to do in other areas as well and I have charged all my ministers and other appointees to ensure that Nigerians experience positive changes in their lives in 2016. “We must reduce our country’s reliance on oil. We must diversify our economy. And we must do all we can to promote job creation. Our challenges are many but our determination to succeed is strong and unshaken.”

Scores of people were killed on Saturday in Borno state by three bomb blasts in separate locations in the state capital, Maiduguri. The first one occured at the Baga fish Market. The market is the biggest fish outlet in Northeast Nigeria where buyers and traders from across Nigeria and communities along the shores of the Lake Chad converge. The incident happened at about 11.10am at the main gate of the market. Minutes after the Baga Market blast, another one exploded at the Maiduguri Monday market in the heart of the state capital. Witnesses said the blast was equally devastating because it killed "many people." "The blast was devastating because it killed many people," Mohammed Mai Kifi, a fish monger said of the Baga market explosion. "It killed hawkers of bread, tea, fruits, labourers and artisans, this is a sad day for us." Tahir Mamman, who sells egg at precinct of the Monday market said the blast went off near Kofa biyu. "It killed many people, especially women and dates (Dabino) sellers," he said. Monday market has remained a soft spot for the Boko Haram terrorists who have launched several attacks there. Yet another one went off at the Borno Express Bus Terminus along Damaturu road in Maiduguri. It also killed many people witnesses said. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Borno State, Barrister Kaka Shehu described the attacks as "heinous, barbaric and desperation by terrorists." According to him, "We condemn this act in its entirety and we extend our condolences to the victims. Based on the directive of his Excellency, Governor Kashim Shettima, we have mobilized health workers to assist the victims. The terrorists are angry with the way they were sacked from town and villages and are now venting their anger on soft targets.” Our correspondent reports that the whole area has been cordoned off by security forces, vigilantes and health workers. Weekly Trust could not immediately verify how many people were killed or whether the bomb was ferried to the scene by a suicide bomber or planted.

Lamido Sanusi has called for Nigeria to have fewer MPs 'Nigeria's House of Representatives speaker has threatened to order the arrest of the central bank chief and 14 others over the fate of $8bn (£5bn). The office of speaker Aminu Tambuwal said he had signed arrest warrants for Lamido Sanusi and the other officials'. The warrants will be executed if they fail to appear before MPs to explain the whereabouts of money allegedly owed to the treasury, a spokesman said. Mr Sanusi said he was unaware of the warrant and denied any wrongdoing. He is widely respected in banking circles in Africa and the West. In 2011, he was named the Central Bank Governor of the Year by the global financial publication, The Banker. 'Nothing personal' Earlier this month, he called for the size of the House of Representatives, the 360-member lower chamber, to be reduced to free up money for development. He also called for the number of public servants to be cut by half. Mr Tambuwal's spokesman, Imam Imam, said other officials for whom warrants have been issued include Andrew Yakub, group managing director of the state-owned Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation's (NNPC), and National Pension Commission Director-General Muhammad Ahmad. He said MPs would enforce the arrest warrants if the officials failed to appear before a parliamentary committee to account for the money. The officials apparently have until Thursday to appear before MPs, reports the BBC's Chris Ewokor from the capital, Abuja. The warrants were issued because the 15 officials are accused of refusing to honour several invitations to explain to MPs the alleged failure to transfer about $8bn to the treasury, he says. However, a police spokesman told our correspondent he had no knowledge of the warrants. Mr Sanusi told the BBC he was out of Nigeria, but the deputy governor would appear before MPs. He said he was unaware of an arrest warrant for him. "I personally don't believe the speaker signed such a warrant as these things are not personal," he said. Mr Sanusi said the Central Bank of Nigeria has made remittances to the treasury in accordance with the law. "Our accounts are audited by two reputable external auditors... No government agency or department even comes near our contribution to the budget," he said. Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer, but most of its population lives in poverty. Critics say corruption is endemic in the government and there is a lack of financial accountability. Source:- m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-20699924

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has welcomed the introduction of goal-line technology, which is to be used for the first time in a match at the Club World Cup in Japan: Sanfrecce Hiroshima against Auckland City. The issue of goal-line technology has veered from one extreme to the other in recent years, with FIFA unsure whether it would undermine officials rather than help them. However, world football's governing body will try out two systems - UK-based Hawk-Eye and GoalRef, from Germany - in Japan to see if they can be implemented at a wider level. "It's a big day,'' Valcke told FIFA's website. "Tomorrow will be the first time that goal-line technology will be officially used in a game. The tests are done; and the instillation tests were successful. "This is also an important day for us, because we will use one of the two systems we are using here in the FIFA Confederations Cup next year.'' He added: "This is a kind of revolution. It is the first time that this kind of technology is coming into football. It will be restricted to the goal-line specifically. The IFAB (International Football Association Board) is there to ensure the 17 laws of the game are protected. "It was their decision, and they were clear, to say that the technology is limited to the goal- line. We must ensure that when the ball goes into the goal, the referee must get the information that the ball has gone in. The referee has the final decision. "The technology won't change the speed, value or spirit of the game. There is no reason to be against this technology.'' The Hawk-Eye system is the same as that used in cricket and tennis, which relies on a series of seven cameras to create a 3D picture of each goal, while GoalRef uses electro-magnetic sensors. Valcke also said he had full confidence there would be no errors from the technology. "It needs to be the most accurate system we can have at the moment,'' he said. "There can be no mistakes with this and that is why the IFAB took two years to make sure the system was perfect.'' Information from the Press Association was used in this report |
