A’ibom Councilors Rue Relocation Of Guber Tribunal

Grassroot legislators in Akwa Ibom State have unanimously called for the immediate relocation of the Akwa Ibom State Governorship Elections Petitions Tribunal to Uyo which is its rightful location as provided in the country’s constitution.

Rising from an extra-ordinary meeting held in the state, the 329 councilors under the aegis of Conference of Akwa Ibom State Councillors were of the opinion that any attempt to run short of constitutional provisions in a judicial process, amounts to “holding something on top of nothing.”

The lawmakers in a statement signed by their Conference Chairman, Hon. Charles Bassey, Secretary, Hon. Nkeruwem James, and Director of Publicity, Hon. Bassey Bassey, frowned at what they describe as the 'unholy' relocation of the Akwa Ibom State Elections Petition Tribunal to Abuja, describing it as a deliberate attempt to dissuade the fair conduct of the tribunal.

The councilors opined that the distance between Abuja and Uyo impedes the teaming witnesses across the wards in the state who are ready to testify to the authenticity of the result of the April 11 2015 elections as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

They called for the immediate return of the tribunal to Akwa Ibom where the elections held as stipulated in Section 285 Sub section (2) of the constitution that: “There shall be established in each state of the Federation one or more Election Tribunals, which shall to the exclusion of any court or tribunal, have original jurisdiction to hear and determine petitions as to whether any person has been validly elected to the office of Governor or Deputy Governor or as a member of any legislative House.”


The 329 councilors insisted that there is no security threat in the state as insinuated by the opposition, maintaining that as the closest government to the people, they cannot afford to fold their arms and watch the rights of the people being undermined.

Similarly the grassroot lawmakers have thrown their weight behind what they describe as the 'proactiveness' of Governor Udom Emmanuel in actualizing his vision for the state.

The councilors said the recent inauguration of a team of experienced technocrats and stakeholders in the maritime sector with a mandate on members to pursue vigorously, the implementation and take off of the Ibom deep seaport project, was a step in the right direction.

The statement which reads in parts "We feel satisfied and proud of the proactiveness of His Excellency, Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel in his positive giant strides thus far in the governance of Akwa Ibom state which has found expression in his initial setting up a tact team of experienced technocrat and stakeholders for the all-important Ibom Deep Seaport project at Ibaka"

The conference who recounted the achievements recorded during the immediate past administration in the State, congratulated ex-governor Godswill Akpabio on his successful assumption of office as Senator for Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district in the National Assembly, and wished him well in the red chambers.

While commending Senator Bassey Albert of Uyo Senatorial district, the new Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr. Aniekan Uko and the Secretary to the State government, Sir Etekamba Umoren they expressed optimism in their ability to discharge their functions effectively.
