Education / Generator Fumes Kill 2 Kogi Polytechnic Students by UDOKABESTLUV(m): 7:43am On Feb 09
Two Students of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, have died after reportedly inhaling fumes from a generator.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya confirmed this in a telephone interview with DAILY POST on Thursday evening.

Aya disclosed that the victims were identified as Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo, 20 years old, and Ibrahim Haliru.

According to him, a generating set was close to the window of the deceased victims, before they slept off.

The lifeless bodies of the duo were reportedly recovered in the room by neighbours in the early hours of the day.

“There were three students from Kogi Polytechnic inside the room. One Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo, 20 years old, Ibrahim Haliru and Mercy Ojochegbe.

“When they slept inside their room, a generator was switched on close to the window of their apartment.

“They all slept off and inhaled carbon monoxide as a result of the generator set that was on.

“Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo and Ibrahim Haliru were already dead when neighbors discovered the sad incident in the morning, while Mercy Ojochegbe who was still breathing was immediately rushed to the hospital.

“The incident was reported at the B division of the Nigeria Police Force, Lokoja and investigation is ongoing,” he stated.

He admonished residents to always be safety conscious to avert carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes.

He said, “People should be very careful once they are using a generator set in their homes.

“They should give it a distance and also it should not be closer to the window where they are living.

“Some may say because of the fear that people will come and steal the generator, they won’t apply these safety precautions. It is wrong.

“It is when someone is alive that he or she would be able to accomplish things in this world. Safety should always be our watchword.”

Crime / Rivers Policeman Arrested For Defiling 13-Year-Old Girl by UDOKABESTLUV(m): 9:51am On Jan 21
A Police Officer simply identified as Emmanuel has been arrested and detained after he allegedly defiled a 13-year-old girl in his office at the Bori Area Command in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Emmanuel, attached to the Bori Area Command, was said to have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the State Police Command on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu.

Narrating the incident to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Saturday, the teenager’s aunty who gave her name as Love, said she sent the girl on an errand last Friday but was surprised that the girl did not return home that day, hence she started looking for her.

The teenager’s guardian explained that the girl, however, came back the next morning, Saturday, January 13, 2024, and when she interrogated her, the girl narrated how the police officer held her that evening and defiled her in his office at the Bori Area Command till dawn.

She stated, “When she came back around 8am the following day, I asked her where she was coming from and where she slept last night.

“She told me that one police officer with two stars at the Area Command held her in his office at the Area Command, Bori, and raped her till daybreak.

“That he (officer) threatened to shoot her if she shouted. So because of that, she kept quiet. So when she came back I checked her as a mother and saw that somebody had touched her.”

Love said she immediately reported the matter to the Bori Police Division, adding that the girl identified the errant cop before she was taken to the hospital by the Investigating Police Officer at the police division where the incident was reported.

She added, “They now took her to their (police) hospital. The coctor on duty confirmed that there was penetration.”

She confirmed that Emmanuel’s colleagues took him to the SCID in Port Harcourt where he is being detained, even as she demanded justice for the teenager.

“All I want is for this matter to be properly investigated because he (the policeman) is still denying. So I want justice to be served,” the girl’s distraught aunt said.

Meanwhile, a rights group, Rainbow Watch And Development Centre that has been following up on the case has called for an unbiased and thorough investigation into the incident.

Executive Director of the group, Michael Gbarale, in a statement made available to newsmen, described the development as unfortunate, saying the matter must not be swept under the carpet to serve as a deterrent to randy officers.

The statement read, “We commend the Commissioner of Police for the arrest of the officer who allegedly defiled a 13-year-old girl and transferred the case to the SCIID for proper investigation.

“We demand an unbiased and thorough investigation into the incident with a view to ensure that justice is served to all the parties concerned. We will closely monitor and follow the case to its logical conclusion.”

When contacted on Saturday evening, the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and arrest of the police officer, saying that the investigation is still ongoing on the matter.

She stated, “The police officer denied that nothing of such happened, But Yes, I can confirm that he has been arrested and in custody. Investigation is ongoing to unravel what really happened and the appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken if he is found culpable.”

Business / CBN Gives Update On Naira Scarcity by UDOKABESTLUV(m): 6:00am On Dec 11, 2023
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has said enough Naira notes are in circulation amid reports of scarcity of banknotes.

In a statement issued by the Corporate Communications Department of the CBN, the apex bank explained the reasons behind the scarcity of Naira notes in some parts of the country.

CBN’s reaction is coming amid a series of complaints by some bank customers concerning the scarcity of Naira notes at bank counters, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), Points of Sale (PoS), and Bureaux de Change (BDCs).

However, the apex bank said the seeming currency scarcity was occasioned by large volume withdrawals of cash from various CBN branches by Deposit Money Banks (DMBs).

It stated that panic withdrawals by bank customers were also partly responsible for the seeming scarcity.

The CBN said there is no shortage of naira notes, noting that there is adequate supply of the currency in the economy.

“The attention of the CBN has been drawn to reports of alleged scarcity of cash at banks, ATMs, PoS and BDCs in some major cities across the country.

Our findings reveal that the seeming cash scarcity in some locations is due largely to high volume withdrawals from the CBN branches by DMBs and panic withdrawals by customers from the ATMs.

While we note the concerns of Nigerians on the availability of cash for financial transactions, we wish to assure the public that there is sufficient stock of currency notes for economic activities in the country,” the statement reads.

Earlier, DAILY POST alerted Nigerians of the circulation of fake Naira notes.

Crime / Trucks Carrying Humans, Animals Together Will Be Impounded, FRSC Warns by UDOKABESTLUV(m): 5:40am On Dec 11, 2023
Following the death of 18 persons in a crash involving an articulated vehicle on the Abuja-Kaduna Highway on Sunday, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Dauda Biu, has directed that vehicles conveying humans and animals together should be impounded.

Apart from those who lost their lives to the crash, 27 other passengers sustained injuries in the accident that involved 65 persons.

The crash occurred at about 5:20am when the driver of the articulated vehicle, overloaded with goods and humans and travelling at a high speed, lost control and fell into a ditch on the highway.

“To reverse the trend, all Sector Commanders are to set up joint task forces to impound trailers and trucks carrying humans and animals. The courts should prosecute the drivers,” Biu said in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Deputy Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem.

Kazeem added that Biu instructed sector commanders to set up joint task forces in collaboration with sister agencies to conduct special operations to end the practice.

Biu noted that it was necessary for agencies like the police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Army, and Vehicle Inspection Officers, among others, to collaborate and curb the menace.

He described Sunday’s accident as avoidable, while decrying the nonchalant attitude of drivers who disregard simple traffic rules.

Education / Moses Isah: 200-Level ATBU Student Declared Missing by UDOKABESTLUV(m): 5:23am On Dec 11, 2023
A 200-level student of the Department of Chemistry at the Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University, ATBU, Moses Isah, has been reported missing.

His disappearance was announced on the ATBU students Facebook group, ‘Voice of Balewites’, by his elder brother, Samson Isah.

The Facebook post urged anyone with information to call specific numbers.

The post reads: “I am Moses Isah’s elder brother. Pls anybody with any information of his whereabouts should pls call 07083340906 or 07039785845. He has been missing for the past 15 months. He is a student of ATBU.”

Speaking with DAILY POST, Isah said his brother had been missing for 15 months, adding that all efforts to locate him proved abortive.

According to him, he had filed a report at a Police Station but due to financial constraints, could not “follow up after the police started requesting for money”.

Moses was last seen at his lodge in Yelwa Tuldu.

When asked if the school management was aware of his brother’s disappearance, Isah said he approached a particular lecturer (name withheld) for assistance.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Bauchi State Police Command, Ahmed Wakil, did not respond to messages and calls.

Speaking with DAILY POST, ATBU’s Director of Information, Zailani Bappa, said the university’s management has no record of any missing student, adding that it has limited knowledge of what goes on outside the institution’s premises.

Bappa, who wondered why the brother of the missing student took so long to announce the development, said, “Nobody has come to make any report to us that his brother is missing. We are not responsible for the safety of students staying off-campus but if the matter was reported to us, our duty is to report such matter to the Police.”
