Politics / Police Ban Pro-biafra Protests In Rivers by umoette01(m): 3:00pm On Nov 06, 2015
The Rivers State Police Command has warned members of the Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB) to forget about staging any form of protests in the state today, Friday, November 6, 2015, as the command will not tolerate acts that will disturb the peace of the state.
IPOB had planned to stage peaceful demonstration in major cities of the defunct Eastern Region, including Port Harcourt, the state capital to protest the continued detention of the director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
The state commissioner of police, Mr. Musa Kimo, who addressed newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, said he was aware of plans by some miscreants to carry out the protests in the state.
Kimo stated that all security agencies are on the alert and ready to arrest and prosecute anyone found disturbing public peace and advised parents and guardians to warn their children against participating in any protest in the state.

Politics / Stop Blaming Jonathan For Nigeria’s Woes – Murray-bruce by umoette01(m): 11:23am On Nov 05, 2015
The senator representing Bayelsa East senatorial district in the National Assembly, Ben Murray-Bruce, has urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to stop blaming former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, for Nigeria’s woes.
Murray-Bruce said it was unjust to ignore all the good work of the former president, but only blame him for all the country’s woes.
In his series of tweets, he argued that there were problems in Nigeria when Jonathan became President in 2010 but he didn’t blame his predecessors or the military. Rather he did his best to fix the challenges confronting the country.
“Jonathan has his own faults but he did achieve great things for Nigeria and it is unjust to ignore all he did and blame him to the world. There were problems in Nigeria when Jonathan suddenly became President. He didn’t blame the military or Yar’Adua. He just tried his best,” Murray-Bruce noted.
The senator added that Jonathan has left giant footprints in eternity’s sands of time and it will be a waste of time to try to erase them by constantly castigating him.
“No matter what anyone says to the world about Goodluck Jonathan, the world also has its way of getting independent information on Nigeria. Hate him or love him, Jonathan has left giant footprints in eternity’s sands of time! No eraser is strong enough to make them indelible,” he said.
The Common Sense advocate opined that the world appreciates what Jonathan did in Nigeria.
“Recently the world was looking for someone with the moral authority to promote democracy in Tanzania. Their search led them to Jonathan. The Guardian and Daily News of Tanzania urged Tanzanian leaders to emulate Jonathan. The world appreciates what Jonathan did in Nigeria”

Politics / PDP Admits They Didn’t Prepare For Defeat by umoette01(m): 8:42pm On Nov 03, 2015
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has said the party didn’t prepare for defeat in the last general elections.
The defeat was the first to be suffered by the party, which had been controlling the government at the centre since the country returned to democracy in 1999.
Apart from losing the presidential election to the All Progressives Congress, the PDP was also defeated in many states which it had been controlling for 16 years.
Acting Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, said in Abuja when the Resident Country Director of International Republican Institute, Senten Barnes paid him a visit that the defeat came to the PDP as a surprise.
“We were so used to winning in the last 16 years. We never prepared for defeat and so when it came, we were surprised.
“Now, we should know that money is not everything. Then we were wrong. Selling of documents (by workers of the party) should stop.
“The party will train staff in collaboration with IRI, and our workers must be careful against the sale of document to outsiders.

Politics / Let’s Kill Tribalism Before It Kills Nigeria- Senator Ben Murray Bruce by umoette01(m): 11:03am On Nov 02, 2015
I was very angry on Friday, 23rd of October, 2015. One of my Twitter followers had tweeted a photo of an advertisement for a room to let. What was disturbing about this to let sign was that the landlord had listed a long list of tribes that he would not rent out his premises to. I would not offend the sensibilities of my readers by listing the tribes blacklisted by the landlord, but I must say I was mad as hell after reading his post. How could Nigeria have gotten to this level?
But then again, when I reflected on the matter, it occurred to me that we are all to blame for tribalism in Nigeria. First of all, we do not have any mechanism for fostering national cohesion which would be the only lasting panacea for sounding the death knell to tribalism. You might ask yourself what about the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)? If you do not know that that noble idea introduced by General Yakubu Gowon’s administration has been badly bastardised, then you need a massive dose of reality to cure your reality distortion.
In today’s Nigeria only the most naive undergraduate does not know that it is possible, for a fee (read bribe) to ‘sort’ your posting to a state of your choice. There have been verifiable accounts of individuals who have served in their own states of origin. There have even been provable cases of individuals who went abroad for their Master’s degree while they were meant to be serving Nigeria.
And so without any first hand interaction amongst Nigerian youths to enable them know about the people and tribes that make up this blessed land, many of our youth rely on biases fed to them by their friends and family. As such, with the only mechanism we have to build a detribalised Nigeria distorted, the fault lines of division by ethnicity and religion continue to widen. And what is more, we seem to have an aversion to history in our curriculum.
The other day I was talking to a young Nigerian business owner of 42 years of age who did not know that Nigeria had fought a civil war. This young man went to good schools and graduated from a well reviewed second generation Nigerian university. If he does not know, I can only imagine how much more ignorant of our national history those younger and less educated than him would be. In response to my followers’ tweet, I released a series of tweets with the hashtag #killtribalism and I was pleasantly surprised that in less than an hour that hashtag became the number one trending topic in Nigeria according to the official Twitter trends. That the issue trended so dramatically made me realise that our youth (who largely determine what trends or does not trend) are hungry for the right information.
Basically, this is what I tweeted. Many young Nigerians do not know that the first elected Mayor of Enugu was a Fulani man named Malam Umaru Altine who was elected to that exalted office in 1956. Malam Altine was loved by the people of Enugu and at that time they would probably have stoned anybody that refused to let out his property to Altine on the basis of his tribe or religion. Malam Altine’s case was not even unique. In 1957, an Igbo man, Felix Okonkwo, was appointed a member of the Northern House of Chiefs. So integrated was Okonkwo into Kano’s society that he was better known in some areas as Okonkwo Kano.
This detribalised politics was not only limited to the then Eastern and Northern regions. The Western region also practised it. In 1950, an Igbo man, Mboni Ojike, was elected Deputy Mayor of Lagos. And I must commend the people of Lagos State for sustaining this welcoming and all embracing attitude to all Nigerians in 2015 by electing Chief Oghene Egoh, Mrs. Rita Orji and Mr. Tony Nwoolu as their representatives to the House of Representatives in the 2015 general elections even though they originate from other parts of Nigeria.
Tribalism, regionalism and religious intolerance were strange to post independence and early independent Nigeria and you and I have to bring back that Nigeria. That is the only way that all Nigerians can be at home in any part of Nigeria without being regarded as settlers in their own country. That is the only way we can kill tribalism, regionalism and religious intolerance before it kills Nigeria. The constitution recognises anyone born in Nigeria by Nigerian parents as a citizen. We must go the next step and accept any Nigerian resident in any part of Nigeria as a full fledged citizen with all the rights that indigenes of that area have.
We must amend our constitution to criminalise discrimination of any Nigerian citizen in any part of Nigeria because he is not an indigene. Indigenes and residents must pay the same amount for school fees and social services all over Nigeria. Every Nigerian must feel at home in any part of Nigeria. Ironically, while we are so focused on divisions by tribes, ethnicity and religion, the rest of the world is breaking down these barriers.
At the 2015 Conservative Party conference, British Prime Minister David Cameron showed just how far his government is willing to go to make Britain a home for all. Cameron urged British employers of labour to do more to eliminate the discrimination of people whose ethnic origins are not British.
Said Cameron: “Opportunity doesn’t mean much to a British Muslim if he walks down the street and is abused for his faith. Opportunity doesn’t mean much to a black person constantly stopped and searched by the police because of the colour of their skin. I’m a dad of two daughters – opportunity won’t mean anything to them if they grow up in a country where they get paid less because of their gender.” Continuing, Cameron condemned a true life situation where “one young black girl had to change her name to Elizabeth before she got any calls to interviews”.
Now juxtapose this to our situation in Nigeria where a state governor sacked civil servants for no other reason than because they were natives of another state. What is bad is not just that this governor sacked these innocent civil servants. No. The worst cut is that he was applauded for that inglorious act. In one of my first back page columns for THISDAY, ‘Death to Xenophobia and Tribalism”, I wrote about the rage in several African nations over the xenophobic attacks on fellow Africans by South Africans.
Is it not hypocritical that while we condemned such behaviour, we are treating each other worse back in our individual countries? Or is it only tolerable when we do it to ourselves? Only last week, I was looking at the data from the world renowned US venture capitalist firm, Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers, and their data revealed that 40 per cent of Fortune 500 companies were founded by first or second generation immigrants. But that is not the story. The story is that many of these immigrants were denied a level playing field in their countries of origin which forced them to seek more equitable environments in the West.
The number one obstacle which militated against these mega successful people from reaching their potential in their home countries was a lack of social justice. Nigeria has an acute shortage of medical doctors and nurses and other health personnel, but there are more Nigerian doctors practising in the United States than there are in Nigeria. The story told by one of our doctors in the Diaspora paints a graphic picture of why many of our best brains leave Nigeria. This young man had grown to become an expert in his field of medicine and one day he was scheduled to perform surgery on a VIP. During the post Op, he found out that the man was a former Nigerian leader. After a successful surgery, the former First Lady thanked him profusely and wondered why he was not practising in Nigeria.
It took all that the young man had in him not to lose it and go on a tirade of how, through policies like quota system and federal character, he had been denied opportunities at home which were then handed over to him on a platter of gold by the nation the First Lady was asking him to leave. I have written about the tribalistic tendencies inherent in some Nigerians, however, if truth be told, some of these tendencies are fostered by the government through policies like quota system and Federal Character principles.
How can youths be loyal to a country where their cut off mark in the University Matriculation Examinations (UME) and common entrance depends on their state of origins rather than on their intelligence? Invariably what the government is telling these youths is that where you come from is more important than what you know. In short, that your state and your tribe is your identify rather than your country. I am in Calabar for the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2015 pageant as this piece is being written and watching these lovely beauties from all over Nigeria interact with each other without regard to ethnic and religion, I am moved to say that Nigeria does not have hundreds of tribes. Nigeria has only two tribes. Good people or bad people. No more, no less. Let us kill tribalism together!
Finally, I congratulate Miss Anyadike Unoaku, also known as Miss Anambra, who has emerged as the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2015 (MBGN). Congratulations and may your reign usher in peace and prosperity to Nigeria.
My name is Ben Murray Bruce and I just want to make common sense.

Politics / A’court To Deliver Judgment On Saraki’s Appeal Friday by umoette01(m): 9:06pm On Oct 29, 2015
The Court of Appeal, Abuja is expected to deliver judgment on Friday in the appeal by Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
Saraki, who is standing trial on a 13-count charge of false asset declaration before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), is appealing the tribunal’s decision to assume jurisdiction over his trial.
The appellate court had, on October 16, after taking arguments from parties, fixed judgment for 2 pm on October 19, but failed deliver it on the ground that the judgment was not ready.
The judgment was reserved indefinitely, with the court promising to communicate a new date to parties.
It was learnt Thursday that notices were sent to parties informing them about Friday’s date.
The delay by the Court of Appeal to deliver its judgment has stalled proceedings before the CCT, which has elected to await the appellate court’s decision before taking any further steps in Saraki’s trial.
Listed as respondents in the appeal are the CCT, the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), the Federal Ministry of Justice and a lawyer in the ministry, Muslim Hassan.
Arguing the appeal on October 16, Saraki’s lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), urged the appellate court to set aside the entire proceedings before the CCT, including the charge before it.
He argued that the CCT was not properly constituted on when it assumed jurisdiction to entertain the charges because it was made up of two members as against three, which is provided for in Paragraph 15(1) of the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution.
Daudu contended that the provision of Section 28 of the Interpretation Act relied upon by the respondents to argue that the tribunal could validly sit with its Chairman and one other member, was a contradiction of the three-member provision in the Constitution.
He also argued that the tribunal not being a superior court recognised by the Constitution could not exercise criminal jurisdiction.

Politics / Gov. Ambode Inaugurates Tribunal Of Enquiry Into Killing Of Lekki FTZ Boss by umoette01(m): 6:22pm On Oct 22, 2015
Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday inaugurated a five-man Tribunal of Enquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, Alhaji Tajudeen Disu.
Disu was killed on Oct. 12 while resolving a land dispute between members of Okunraye Community and some private companies embarking on various massive projects within the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ).
Ambode, while inaugurating the Tribunal at the Lagos House, Alausa said it had become necessary to investigate the remote cause of the unrest with the view to forestalling future recurrence.
He said the unrest, if not properly managed and addressed, could lead to total breakdown of law and order.
The governor said that the government was desirous of protecting the lives and property of the citizens.
“As a responsible government determined to enforce the rule of law, it is my duty to take firm and purposeful steps to inquire into the origin, factors and circumstances leading to the disturbances at the LFTZ in order to forestall a re-occurrence.
“At a time when this government is attracting a lot of foreign direct investments and opening up the economy of our state, we cannot afford to have such disturbances.
“We will not tolerate any violent acts which disturb the security of lives and property in the state,” he said.
Ambode said that having sought advice from the Attorney-General of the state, a Tribunal of Enquiry had been constituted to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the incident and other recommendations therein.
Earlier, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem, said it had become necessary to constitute a panel of enquiry to investigate the unrest.
The terms of reference of the Tribunal, according to Kazeem, include to find the remote causes of the disturbance and to inquire into all incidental matters that might have led to the event.
He said other references include collecting memoranda from individuals, stakeholders, from various communities and all interested members of the public on the issue, among others.
Kazeem also said that the Tribunal had 45 days to submit its report, and that further days might be added, subject to the approval of the governor.
Responding on behalf of members of the Tribunal, Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi assured that the members would work diligently and conscientiously to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Politics / Nigeria Needs Transparent, Godly Leaders – Buhari by umoette01(m): 6:06pm On Oct 22, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said Nigeria needs leaders with integrity, transparent character, faithfulness and other godly attributes to overcome her current challenges.
Speaking at the sixth Annual Prayer Breakfast organized by the Christian Legislators Fellowship of Nigeria in Abuja, Thursday, the President said great leaders follow godly principles.
Buhari, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ibukun Odusote, said, “The time has come for Nigeria to have godly leaders in a permanently changing world. Change, though usually resisted, is the most constant component of life.
“Thus the need of a Godly leader in our ever changing world cannot be over- emphasized. Whenever God’s people have been without godly leadership, the result has been disastrous.”
Quoting copiously from the Bible, Buhari used Jesus Christ as example of a great leader.
The President continued: “Throughout scripture, God has given us various principles for godly leadership.
“Godly leaders serve others instead of demanding to be served. Godly leaders need to accept the responsibility which God has given them, and a godly leader must be a man with godly commitments, conduct, character and convictions.
“Your Excellencies, Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, if you love Nigerians, please choose to feed them, not just by words but by your actions at the National Assembly, in the various offices, in the market, in the streets and most especially in the church of God.”

Politics / Aisha Buhari Calls For Elimination Of Barriers Hindering Women Development by umoette01(m): 12:19am On Oct 16, 2015
The wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has called for the elimination of all barriers limiting the progress of women farmers in the country.
Aisha, who made the call at the 2015 Oxfam Female Food Hero award ceremony in Abuja, said the present administration had placed high interest in women welfare with focus on agriculture.
NAN reports that the Female Food Hero award is aimed at recognising women farmers that have excelled in spite of numerous challenges and to draw Government attention to the plight.
Represented by Mrs Alayingi Sylva, wife of the former governor of Bayelsa, noted that Nigerian women were in forefront of the agricultural sector consisting 60 per cent of farmers.
She said women are lending their strength to the growing level of national productivity as well as encouraging self reliance.
“Let me at this juncture appeal for the elimination of seeming barriers to women development in all sectors to enable them the opportunity to emerge stronger in the business sector.
“Those enjoying this Oxfam intervention to make adequate use of the opportunity provided to bridge any gap hindering the progress of women,’’ she said.
The wife of the president said recent study showed that Nigerian women entrepreneurs operate in unfavourable business environment characterised by various challenges.

Aisha expressed happiness at Oxfam’s intervention in women famers’ affairs, saying that their efforts will not go down in vain.
Also speaking, the wife of the Governor of Benue, Mrs Eunice Ortom, said there had been multi-dimensional interventions to ensure farmers in Benue obtain the best to boost their from farming activities.

Politics / Senate Summons Customs Boss Over New Rice Import Policy by umoette01(m): 12:01am On Oct 16, 2015
The Senate has summoned the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), to explain the reasons behind the recent lifting of ban on rice importation.
In a motion sponsored on Thursday by Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) and 28 other senators, the lawmakers expressed concern over the reintroduction of import duty payment at land borders.
During the debate, the senators queried what they described as the Comptroller General’s unilateral decision to reopen the country’s land borders to rice importation.
They move, they collectively argued, might reverse the gains so far recorded in rice production in the country.
The Comptroller General had, in a recent directive, ordered the immediate removal of rice from import restriction list and reintroduced import duty payment at land borders.
The Customs authority had explained that the previous restriction which only applied at land border stations had been lifted by the C-G.
Going by the directive, rice imports through land borders would attract the prevailing import duty of 10 percent, with 60 percent levy.
Senator Aliero however argued that the unilateral decision by the Customs boss posed dangers to local rice production and also could discourage further investment in rice farming and agro-allied industries in the country.
Aliero noted that Nigeria is presently the largest importer of rice in the world, adding that the Ministry of Agriculture has projected that the demand for rice will continue to rise from the current level of five million metric tons to 36 million metric tons by 2050.
Quoting figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, the senator put the national supply deficit gap at 1.5million metric tons.
Many other senators who contributed to the debate however argued that the Customs boss should be given the opportunity to offer explanation for his actions to enable the Senate take informed decision.
The senators, including Emmanuel Bwacha, Shehu Sani, Dino Melaye and Foster Ogola submitted that rather than asking the Customs boss to reverse the directive, he should be allowed to defend his action.
President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who rounded off the debate, also stressed the need to give the Customs boss a fair hearing on the matter.
Saraki said, “The only reason we are talking about this is that we really need to give the Comptroller-General a chance to explain why the decision was taken.

Politics / Our Ministers Are Here by umoette01(m): 1:06pm On Oct 15, 2015
To many, the composition and colouration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s partial list of ministerial nominees did not come as a surprise. It is no surprise that people like Abubakar Malami, SAN, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, Chris Ngige, Kayode Fayemi, Lai Mohammed and, of course, the untameable ‘Tiger from Rivers State’, Rotimi Amaechi, made the Ministerial list – the list which, I believe, is the face of the All Progressives Congress (APC)that won the election.
Starting with the troubled, delicate Northeast, it is pleasing to note that Mrs. Aisha Jumai Alhassan, who narrowly lost the last governorship election in Taraba State, made the list. Now, the voters in the state, who almost set a record of electing the first female Governor in Nigeria, will be consoled, gratified and assured that they have not lost out entirely from the blessings of change. One will also not be surprised to see Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, from next-door Gombe State, making the supplementary list. As a foundation member of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the state and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the last election, the odds should favour him. With his sterling leadership characteristics, he is the most credible hanger on whom the APC fortunes in the state should be hung. When Mohammed Danjuma Goje, in whose administration he had served as Finance Commissioner for about seven years, bypassed him and chose Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, former Accountant General of the Federation, as the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2011 election, Yahaya took it in good stride, leaving the PDP for the CPC. When Goje fell out with his favourite, he saw Yahaya as the only personality that could give PDP a run for its money in the state. Thus, he quickly made peace with him. Not wanting the past to hinder APC’s fortunes in the state, Yahaya was humble enough to team up with his former boss in the contest to wrest the state from the strongholds which Goje himself had entrenched in the state. Though he lost to the PDP, the reality is that he is more popular with the grassroots and is a dependable guardian of the APC flag in the state.
The nominees from the Northwest would certainly have found their way into Mr. President’s government one way or the other. General Andulrahman Bello Danbazau was actually touted for some other positions. Abubakar Malami, SAN, has always been with Mr. President and had been at the forefront of his judicial battles. No notable politician from his Kebbi home state would frown at his nomination. Although he had, between 2007 and 2015, vied for one political office or the other, what he has going for him most is humility and the ability to creep into people effortlessly. Amina Mohammed would surely infuse some gender dynamism in Mr. President’s cabinet. She is highly cerebral, articulate, globally exposed and experienced in the management of institutions, structures and instruments for the delivery of concrete development to the grassroots.

Politics / Will Posterity Be Fair To President Buhari? by umoette01(m): 12:59pm On Oct 15, 2015
One of the maxims of equity stipulates that, “one who comes into equity must come with clean hands”. President Buhari has scaled the hurdles of equity and has begun the journey to posterity. His journey to posterity started on May 29th, the day president Buhari was sworn in as the 6th democratically elected president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Like equity, there’s no guaranteed road to posterity. But, will posterity be fair to president Buhari? Can he be able to pull a rabbit out of a hat? Especially now he has unveiled names of his much awaited would be ministers?
Or is he going to follow the same road with some highly detached individuals of the old corrupt political order, whose roads to posterity have been tarred with expletives and curses?
The discerners will agree with me that with an iron clad reputation— president Buhari has started on a familiar terrain in rescuing this nation from it’s myriads of challenges with strong emphasis on corruption, which has remained his strong suit over the years.
The massive catastrophe and sheer greed that was carefully erected at the Augean stable of the immediate past dysfunctional leadership is still waiting for justice. And there’s no compensation that would be better to Nigerians than open justice to all those gluttonous looters who under the umbrella of impunity ruthlessly and repeatedly battered our economy.
If Mr. president does not want to be accompanied to posterity with public opprobrium, he should try not be carried away by executive decorum nor distracted by the politically mischief makers and irreverent critics who like vultures, have been hacking into the carcasses of his administration with relentless pillorying.
While he had before hand solicited to Nigerians to temper their pandering expectations with dose of realities, he should also be cognizance of the fact that, considering the burden of expectations, no immunity will shield him from posterity, if he and his newly constituted ministers do not initiate other radical reforms and policies that would revive our ailing economy.

Sports / Evra Still Upset Over Manchester United Exit by umoette01(m): 11:53pm On Oct 14, 2015
Juventus defender Patrice Evra has admitted that he is still upset about the way he left Manchester United in 2014.
The 34-year-old was keen to continue his career at Old Trafford, but eventually opted to leave the club for Juventus after United changed the terms of his contract.
Evra has no regrets over his decision to join the Serie A champion, but still finds it hard to discuss his United exit.
“It’s still hard to talk about my United exit, but one day – when my career’s over – I’ll be able to speak more openly about it,” the Frenchman told RMC.
“I came to Turin above all for my family, because at Manchester they had inserted a clause in our agreement which changed the situation considerably. It really annoyed me.
“But I don’t regret this move, which in the end has proven to be more than positive.
“I’m happy in Serie A, even if it was more a coincidence that I ended up in Turin than a choice.
“My aim is to keep on winning with Juventus and the national team, particularly since we’re the host nation [at EURO 2016].”

Sports / FIFA World Ranking: Belgium To Take Over No. 1 Spot From Argentina by umoette01(m): 11:44pm On Oct 14, 2015
Belgium will take over the No. 1 spot in the FIFA World Ranking in November following a 3-1 home win versus Israel on Tuesday.
The Belgians were third in the most recent ranking published at the start of the month, but with Germany losing in Republic of Ireland and current No. 1 Argentina losing at home to Ecuador, the win against Israel puts them in the top spot for the first time in their history.
The victory put Belgium on 1440 ranking points, and even if Argentina win in Paraguay on Tuesday night they can score no more than 1429. Germany’s score in the next ranking, which is released on Nov. 5, will be 1388 as they have already played their two games.
Belgium were as low as 66th in the ranking in 2009, so moving to the very top in the space of six years is a remarkable achievement.

Politics / Tribunal upholds Sen. TA Orji's Election by umoette01(m): 12:19am On Oct 12, 2015
The National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia has dismissed the petition against the election of Senator Theodore Orji for Abia Central senatorial zone.
A member of the tribunal, Justice Imeh Umannah, while delivering judgment in the petition filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Ahamdi Nweke, said that the tribunal upheld the preliminary objections raised by Orji of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Umannah explained that the petition was incompetent, considering that Nweke failed to provide the scores polled by him and the respondent during the election.
He further said that the petitioner did not specify the wards and units where there were substantial irregularities, corrupt practices and non-compliance with the cited sections of the Electoral Act.
Consequently, the tribunal dismissed the petition for lack of competence and affirmed Orji’s election.
In a related development, the tribunal also upheld the election of Chief Sam Onuigbo also of the PDP, for Ikwuano/Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency.
The tribunal Chairman, Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo, who read the judgment, said that the petitioner, Chief Collins Onyeama (APGA), failed to prove the allegation of non-compliance.
Onigbanjo further said that Onyeama could not tender evidence to prove his allegations of mutilation and alterations of the result sheets.
He said that the tribunal relied on the certified true copies of the result sheets tendered by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
This, he said, was because the petitioner could not prove beyond reasonable doubt that the pink copy of the result was issued to him by the commission.
The tribunal also discountenanced the petitioner’s allegation that fictitious results were produced in areas where election did not take place for lack of evidence.
The tribunal upheld the election of Onuigbo, saying that it complied with the sections of the Electoral Act.
The tribunal declared the result of Arochukwu State Constituency inconclusive and ordered a rerun in 25 units in the area.
A member of the tribunal, Justice Bello Tukur, who read the judgment in the petition filed by Mr Chijioke Okoro (PDP) against the election of Mr Luke Okara (APGA), said that the petitioner proved beyond reasonable doubt that election did not take place in those units.
