Iran's sport minister has ruled out Iran's participating in the men's football World Cup co-hosted by the US this summer.

"Considering that ‌this corrupt regime has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances ⁠can we ​participate in ​the World ​Cup," Ahmad Donyamali told Iran's state television.

The president of world football's governing body FIFA, Gianni Infantino, had stressed that Donald Trump welcomes Iran's participation despite the war.

He said he spoke to Trump on Tuesday and received assurances from the US president that the Iranian team would be permitted to compete.

Iran are scheduled to play group matches against New Zealand and Belgium in LA and Egypt in Seattle, however, their fans are currently banned from entering the US.
