Parachoko:
We lost it during the first military coup

Our democracy was not given time to grow
Is it possible to get the momentum back? Is it probable that it will happen? Or is it lost forever?

This inspired me to create a short piece called The Sleeping Giant which explores the idea through storytelling and symbolism.

During Independence, there was optimism, not just among Nigerians but globally.

Nigeria was blessed with vast natural resources, a large population. People around the world believed it would become one of the world's great nations and a leading voice in Africa. There was so much potential.

Yet today, Nigeria struggles with insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure, economic hardship, and a growing loss of faith in public institutions.

At what point did Nigeria lose the direction it was headed?

Was it the military coups?

The Civil War?

Corruption and the greed of a few that gradually spread through society?

Ethnic and religious divisions?

Or is the problem something deeper?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives.

If you had to point to one moment that changed Nigeria's trajectory, what would it be?

Hello Nairalanders,

I wrote this song as a message of encouragement to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora who are still pushing, praying, and hoping for a better Nigeria in 2026 and beyond.

This year has been extremely difficult for many families. From high cost of living and insecurity to tired youths still refusing to give up, a lot of us have felt the weight of it all. This song is not about politics or blame — it’s about resilience, shared pain, and the quiet courage Nigerians show every day.

Below is the lyrics so everyone can connect with the message while listening.

Lyrics:

Another year with the sun still rising
But the nights felt heavy on our souls
Promises spoken, then rewritten
While mothers prayed over empty bowls
Streets cried loud with broken voices
Youth stood tall with tired eyes
Dreams on pause, hearts still chosen
To believe beyond the lies

We’ve seen the dark
We’ve felt the cost
Still standing strong
Though much was lost

Nigeria, we bend but we don’t break
Through the fire, through the ache
Even when the road feels cold
We carry gold inside our pain
Nigeria, tears fall like rain
But hope still knows our name
From the dust, we rise again
We survive, we remain

Power fades, but courage glows
In candlelight and whispered plans
From quiet homes to crowded cities
We learned to live with less in hand
They tried to steal tomorrow
But tomorrow learned to fight
In every scar, a lesson
In every tear, a light

Hold on, my people
This story’s not done
The dawn is closer
Than the setting sun

We are still here
Still breathing hope
Nigeria
Still rising
