NO fewer than eight members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to the Wailo Orientation Camp in the Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State have tested positive for coronavirus.

Also, two more persons in the state have died of suspected yellow fever raising the number of deaths so far recorded at 10 since the disease outbreak last week.

This was disclosed in a release issued and signed by the information officer of the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Agency, Ibrahim Sani, and made available to newsmen in Bauchi, the capital.

According to the release, the Executive Chairman of the State Primary Healthcare Agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, has instructed a surveillance team to carry out sample collections and investigations of all corps members undergoing training in the camp to avoid de-escalation.

It added that a holding room had since been allocated by the State Director of the NYSC for those that are suspected to be positive cases.

On yellow fever, the statement said that the Commissioner of Health and the Executive Chairman of the agency have activated various response teams of state and local government areas .

It stated further that it had also conducted a series of meetings to underscore the magnitude of the emerging new cases.

“As of today, the 19th of November, there have been rising cases of outbreaks in some communities in the state.As you are aware, earlier last week, the Executive Chairman of the State Primary Healthcare Agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, made a media briefing to which he mentioned the death of eight probable yellow fever cases as well as eight confirmed cases, both in the Ganjuwa local government area of Bauchi State”

“However, the Executive Chairman also revealed that after an active detailed investigation report, two more people died of suspected yellow fever, putting the number of deaths to 10.’

‘So far, more than 800 persons were vaccinated for yellow fever in Ganjuwa as a response to halt the spread of yellow fever in the area,” the statement reads.

What started as a mere fight between two hoodlums in Mushin area of Lagos, has degenerated and resulted in violence which has left three people dead with others in critical conditions while about 120 vehicles were destroyed and 50 shops were vandalised on Monday.


The fight which reportedly started on Sunday night, during a social function organised at Alaafia street was said to have degenerated till Monday and extended to Daniel street, Idi-Araba and Idi-Oro areas where the violence was at its peak.

Due to the incident, Lagos State government has imposed a curfew on Mushin effective from 9pm of Monday.

According to eye witnesses’ account, the victims of the violence involved a grandmother who was ganged raped.

Superstar singer, Seun Kuti, the son of legendary Fela, has said the government threatened to shut African Shrine if he goes ahead with the launch of his “political resistance” which he called The Movement of the People.

In a post on his Instagram page (bigbirdkuti) duplicated on his Twitter handle (@RealSeunKuti) Seun revealed that “the government” made the threat in a call to his elder sister.

Seun also posted a letter from the Divisional Police Officer, The Nigeria Police, Alausa Division, Ikeja Lagos, and addressed to THE MANAGER, The African Shrine, No. 1, NERDC Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.

In the letter dated November 16, 2020, entitled “RE: Mass Meeting of a Movement of the People tagged #EndSARS Movement: Lessons and Task,” the Police said the meeting Seun was planning “is not welcome at this perilous time.”

The letter read in part: “Your are hereby warned to suspend such gathering as any infraction that may emerge from this gathering will be tag (sic) a deliberate action to sabotage the transition and restoration of the peace in Lagos State by Lagos State government and the Nigeria Police Force.”

Seun’s reaction
Reacting to the development, Seun wrote: “So yesterday (Sunday, November 15) the government called my eldest sister @yeniakuti and threatened to close the shrine if I hold my event there tmr (Tuesday, November 17) and also sent a letter to back it up.

“I respect my families’ decision not to hold the event as is, but I will still go ahead with all the other organisations to launch THE MOVEMENT OF THE PEOPLE tomorrow (Tuesday) and start our political resistance to the tyranny of this oppressive regime.

“This is a meeting, just a meeting of organisations, and they are basically banning the right of association.

“Why are they afraid of the people organising? What is democratic about this act?

“The last time we tried to launch the government quickly called curfew and this time they have used threat, but you can’t stop the will of the people.”

The organisations expected at the launch include Nigeria Resistance Movement (NRM), Socialist Vanguard Tendency(SVT), Movement for Socialist Alternative(MSA), Joint Action Front (JAF) among others.
