For one week a year, thousands of people gather here to ponder some of life's big questions. Can robots make us feel less lonely? Have we invented enough devices to replace walking yet? Does an internet-connected vibrator count as technology? Why is Ivanka Trump here?Thousand of people are headed to Las Vegas for CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, a massive marketing event where technology companies show off their newest innovations. It's a parade of product announcements, very sharp TVs and weird gadgets, many of which will never be released. The show floor doesn't open until Tuesday, but events begin Sunday, and there are already some hints of what the biggest stories will be out of the event. That includes newly sanctioned sex tech and facial recognition to track attendees – plus stealth You outside the official CES venue.Ms Trump is also scheduled to give a keynote talk on Tuesday about the future of work, a decision proving controversial among some attendees. You thought TV technology peaked at 4K? Think again: TV manufacturers will always find new ways to sell you sets with bigger screens, more pixels, and arguably extraneous features. Most current TVs use either LCD or OLED tech, and OLED is generally better but more expensive. A newer tech called MicroLED, pushed hard by Samsung, is meant to challenge OLED. It wasn't ready for prime time last year, but it's expected to arrive for consumers in 2020. China's TCL, however, has a new tech confusingly called Mini-LED. Mini-LED is really an improved version of the LED-backlit LCD screens that are common today, improving the picture so it's at least close to OLED and MicroLED sets, but for a much cheaper price. And no CES would be complete without TV screens with ridiculous resolutions: 8K displays aren't new, but they'll certainly be more common at CES 2020 than ever before. While there's little point to owning one (there's virtually nothing shot in 8K, and at typical viewing distances the human eye can't discern the improvements), there's no doubt it'll eventually become the successor to 4K. Consumers may not immediately be sold on every advance in TV tech, but they do understand more pixels. 5. Advanced Sensors Power Next-Gen Health Tech Advances in chips and low-power wireless technology have been a boon to wearables and health tech. As a result, CES 2020 will be flooded with sophisticated sensors, including devices that can scan and measure calorie intake, glucose levels, driver distraction, body temperature, and even when you're likely to have your next bowel movement. That's not even counting all the sleep tech, from smart mattresses for catching better Zs and stress relievers that help you get to sleep faster. 6. 5G Goes Big And Small CES isn't really a show about mobile tech, but all the tech companies with a stake in mobile are at the show, and 5G is what's permeating everything right now. While there won't be that many new phones at CES, 5G is about much more than that, and at CES we'll hear more about how 5G will be used in bigger-picture ideas like smart cities and other infrastructure. We’ll also see some smaller players make noise about new 5G modems and hotspots. 7. Biometrics Rise Bike lock with fingerprint sensor Visit below for full update

Starting with (and including) the Mi 9T Pro, all Xiaomi smartphones that launch internationally are shipping with Google's Phone and Messages apps. This change has finally been acknowledged by Xiaomi on its official forums today, and it's definitely been a long time coming. Thus, if you have a Xiaomi handset running a Global or EEA ROM, you no longer have MIUI Dialer and Messaging installed. The Chinese company is giving up on these and using Google's alternatives due to "privacy laws and restrictions around the globe". Xiaomi continues to explain that Google's Phone and Messages use Google Mobile Services, which is obvious and doesn't really get into the nitty gritty. Will we start the journey to a better, kinder internet? Which countries are best placed to win the AI race? And should Ivanka Trump be speaking at a tech show? Just some of the questions we address in the first edition of Tech Tent this year. Last month, the creator of the World Wide Web Sir Tim Berners-Lee, told us of his plan to put it back on the right track. His Contract for the Web aims to get companies, countries and individuals to work together to combat cyber-bullying, misinformation and other online harms. Catherine Miller of the think tank dot everyone, which describes its mission as championing responsible technology for a fairer future, gives us her assessment of how likely it is that we will make the web a better place in 2020. She stresses that better regulation will be key, changing the economic incentives that mean the tech giants fight to keep people hooked to their platforms, and reward damaging behaviour. When it comes to the race to build what is arguably the key technology of our times - artificial intelligence - the consensus has been that the United States is in the lead, but China is catching up fast. Now a new global AI index produced by the online news site Tortoise has come up with a more nuanced picture. It found that, yes, the US and China were one and two in AI, with the UK in third place. But Alexandra Mousavizadeh, the data scientist who led the project for Tortoise Intelligence, tells us that China was much further behind than they had expected. It scored well in research and development, but its 18th position in having the people with the right skills held it back. "This race is going to be won in many different ways," says Ms Mousavizadeh, stressing that the free market bottom-up approach of the US had proved very fruitful so far, but the top-down Chinese strategy also has its strengths. But she says that around the world a government strategy for developing human capital - "preparing a workforce for working with and being part of AI driven growth" - will be key. Listen to the latest Tech Tent podcast on BBC Sounds. We also look less far ahead - to CES, the huge annual gadget-fest which opens in Las Vegas on Tuesday. No doubt we will see all sorts of products promising to use AI to give consumers better experiences. But one of the keynote speakers looks likely to provide the biggest headlines from the show. On the opening day, Ivanka Trump will be discussing the future of work in a session with the Consumer Technology Association's CEO Gary Shapiro. The invitation to the President's daughter has sparked controversy, especially as female keynote speakers from the tech industry have been thin on the ground in previous years. Mr Shapiro tells Tech Tent that the show is about more than gadgets. It addresses key issues such as the impact of automation on work - and he says as the co-chair of the American Workforce Advisory Board, Ms Trump has significant things to contribute to this debate. But back to technology. I have just been looking back at a blogpost I wrote on New Year's Eve 2009 as I prepared to head off to the 2010 CES in Las Vegas. I was very excited about a British firm called Plastic Logic that was going to unveil a radical new e-reader. "It could be one of the show's stand-out products," I wrote, "or it could end up buried under an avalanche of hype about a forthcoming rival device from a better-known firm." That rival device turned out to be Apple's iPad, unveiled later that month, and Plastic Logic's Que device did indeed end up dead and buried. WhatsApp is saying goodbye to the Windows Phone world by officially ending support for the mobile platform managed by Microsoft. The Facebook-owned company has decided to withdraw support from all Windows Phone versions from today. This means no matter which Windows Phone iteration your device has, it won't get official support for WhatsApp starting tomorrow. The instant messaging app that has over 1.5 billion users across the globe and more than 400 million users in India alone is also set to leave its support for the devices running Android version 2.3.7 and older alongside the iPhone models running iOS 8 and older from February 1, 2020. Despite ending support, WhatsApp will continue to work on your Windows Phone device. It is, however, important to note that you won't receive any future updates or security fixes. "Because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time," WhatsApp wrote on its FAQ section defining end of support for Windows Phone versions. Since July this year, WhatsApp has been unavailable for download through Microsoft Store. Windows 10 Mobile, which is the successor to the earlier Windows Phone versions, is also set to reach end of service from January 14, 2020. The means that the platform itself won't receive any security updates starting early next month. Phone users in Delhi-NCR who lose their mobile phones will now have some respite, with the government launching a portal that will enable blocking and tracing of stolen or lost mobile phones. The initiative was launched in Mumbai in September this year, and has been rolled out for Delhi-NCR now. It will be extended to other parts of the country in 2020. The launch of the portal, https://www.ceir.gov.in, for Delhi-NCR subscribers will facilitate requests for blocking of stolen or lost mobile phones by customers, blocking of such mobile phones across various mobile networks, allowing services to other existing customers having mobile phones with the same International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, sharing of traceability data with police authorities, as well as unblocking of recovered phones. Xiaomi Mi Watch Color With Heart Rate Tracking, Sleep Monitoring Capabilities Launched Xiaomi has launched a new smartwatch in China – the Mi Watch Color. The new smartwatch from Xiaomi has a round dial, unlike the company's recently launched Mi Watch that comes with a rectangular dial. The Xiaomi Mi Watch Color will come in three dial colour options, and straps in a multitude of shades and material choices. As for features, the Xiaomi Watch Color will allow heart rate tracking, sleep monitoring, fitness tracking, and more. However, the company is yet to reveal the pricing and specifications of the Mi Watch Color. The posts shared by the official Mijia Weibo account only show the Mi Watch Color's design, but don't shed any light on the specifications such as display size and resolution, battery capacity, sensors, processor, or memory. The posters, however, reveal some of the features such as heart rate monitoring, fitness tracking, sleep monitoring, calling and app notifications, and QR code payment support among others. The teaser trailer for the Mi Watch Colour suggests it will be available in three dial colours – black, gold, and silver. Additionally, Xiaomi will offer straps in a variety of colours and material choices such as rubber / silicone strap, leather, and metal chain straps. Additionally, there will be a tonne of watch face options to customise the look of the smartwatch. https://www.necticon.com.ng/xiaomi-mi-watch-color-with-heart-rate-tracking-sleep-monitoring-capabilities-launched/

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite Purported Manual Tips Hole-Punch Display, Triple Rear Camera Setup Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite user manual has leaked online, and the document hints at the design details of the phone from the front and back. The phone is seen to sport a hole-punch display up front, placed in the same manner as seen on the Galaxy Note 10. At the back, the phone is expected to feature a triple rear camera setup that is aligned vertically and positioned on the top left edge of the back panel. There's no word on when the Galaxy S10 Lite will launch, but it should be soon, given that the next-gen Galaxy S Series launch in now just months away. Folks at Sammobile got hold of the alleged Galaxy S10 Lite user manual, and it reportedly shows us the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite sketch design from both ends. As mentioned, the phone has a Galaxy Note 10-like front with the cut-out for the selfie camera placed in the centre. The back has a vertically placed triple camera setup that houses a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 5-megapixel macro camera as well. The user manual sketch also shows that the power buttons and the volume rockers will be positioned on the right edge of the screen. The phone is expected to feature a 6.7-inch full-HD+ display. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC, pack 8GB RAM, and offer 128GB storage. It is also believed to pack 4,500mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite is likely to come with a 32-megapixel selfie camera. The phone is reported to be priced at EUR 679.99 (roughly Rs. 53,700), and go on sale in black, white, and blue colour options. It is largely expected to launch at CES 2020, alongside the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) 4.0 beta version that was unveiled last week at the Huawei Developer Groups (HDG) event is attempting to position itself as the alternative to Google's Mobile/Play Services. Huawei account services, in-app payment services, and advertising services all get a major boost in functionality in the new beta. And there are shiny new software packages, like smart learning services and dynamic label manager services, as well as a new Safety Detect security detection service, said a report on Sunday. The new HMS 4.0 is apparently tweaked with new features and comes with major improvements to existing ones. The latter promises system integrity, application security, malicious URL, and fake user detection. Definitely Read. Nichole Yembra is one of the few women you will find on the C-suite level of Africa’s technology industry. And she’s earned her place there. In spite of a valid case being made for having more women at this level and despite the progress being made towards gender parity in the workplace, not a lot has changed globally. With finance and accounting degrees, Yembra’s journey into technology was born out of a zest for constant exploration coupled with a knack for problem-solving. At Ernst & Young (US) where her career began as a manager in the Risk Advisory & Process Improvement group eight years ago, she began to think deeply about getting a hang of the end-to-end processes her consulting work, which focused on three key areas: people, processes and technology, was founded on. “I could do lots around people and processes, then I would make recommendations on technology. I never had to understand it, I never implemented it, I never really tracked it,” Yembra says. E&Y at the time, armed with a Vision 2020 plan, sought to double its profit margins by venturing into emerging markets and was seeking current employees who wanted to live on the continent for two years to build out its tax and advisory services which paid a lot more across Africa. “80% of the revenue for E&Y Advisory was earned in South Africa, so I was going to be primarily there, that was going to be the plan,” she adds. Call it time and chance, God, the universe, as she chooses to believe, but in the space of one week, three people had mentioned Venture Garden Group (VGG) and the work they were doing, adding that she was going to be a great fit for the company. So in December 2015, before the February of the year she was to begin at E&Y South Africa, she decided to meet with the Venture Garden team. “I met them and I absolutely fell in love with what the vision could be and it was more hands-on work in tech.” With her background in finance and the company’s focus on fintech-enabled startups in Africa, it seemed like the perfect fit. So she took a 60% pay cut and joined Venture Garden Group that same month as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), she says. “As we started building out we started realising there’s a million problems to solve!” she recalls. From the business and regulatory landscape in Nigeria to the nascent nature of technology on the continent and particularly funding. Five months later, VGG decided to launch its own investment arm, GreenHouse Capital (GHC) and she became Managing Partner there. For the next three years, she served as both Managing Partner at GHC and as CFO in Venture Garden Group and while it may have seemed like more than she had bargained for, she was getting the hands-on work experience that she sought. But the uniqueness of building for the Nigerian market alone was such a high-risk venture. “We went from crazy profits in 2015 to a dismal 2016 when the recession hit,” she says. As a continent with very similar challenges around various sectors from transport to health, Yembra was keen on a business model that was more pan African and could solve problems that were not solely Nigerian hence at the mercy of the instability of the Nigerian market. And so she went on to found The Chrysalis Company under which she provides advisory services through The Chrysalis Advisors, and investments in pan African startups through The Chrysalis Capital. Through The Chrysalis Capital’s $15 million investment fund for African and Diasporan startups, the company is currently warehousing three companies: Bamboo, Raise, and Helium Health which is about to close its Series A funding round, as conversations are still ongoing with Limited Partners to invest in the fund and support these companies solving pan African issues. https://www.necticon.com.ng/my-life-in-tech-nichole-yembra-is-putting-her-money-where-her-hands-are/ |
It's never good when a giant of the technology business describes your product as "a fool's errand". But that's how Tesla's chief executive Elon Musk branded the laser scanning system Lidar, which is being touted as the best way for autonomous cars to sense their environment. In April he said Lidar was "expensive" and "unnecessary". He believes that cameras combined with artificial intelligence will be enough to allow cars to roam the streets without a human driver. Lidar emits laser beams and measures how long they take to bounce back from objects, and this provides so-called point-clouds to draw 3D maps of the surroundings. These can be analysed by computers to recognise objects as small as a football or as big as a football field and can measure distances very accurately. https://www.necticon.com.ng/artificial-eyes-how-robots-will-see-in-the-future/ |

Google and Apple have removed an Emirati messaging app called ToTok amid claims that it is used for state spying. Not to be confused with China's TikTok, ToTok markets itself as an easy and secure way to chat by video or text. However, The New York Times (NYT) has reported allegations that the WhatsApp-lookalike is a spy tool for the United Arab Emirates government. ToTok has told users that it will be back in the app stores soon. In a blog, it wrote that it is "temporarily unavailable" on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store because of a "technical issue". https://www.necticon.com.ng/google-and-apple-remove-alleged-uae-spy-app-totok/ |
Motorola has announced that it is delaying the launch of the new Razr - an updated version of its 2005 hit clamshell phone which boasts a vertical folding screen. The device, with a launch price of $1,500 (£1,170), was due to begin shipping in the US on 26 December. Parent company Lenovo blamed the Razr's popularity, saying that demand had outstripped supply. But it's yet another example of a folding phone with teething problems. Motorola said it does not think the time delay will be "significant" but has not yet revealed a new date. When the BBC's Chris Fox tried out a prototype of the Razr, he identified a few issues with the hardware - not least the way in which the screen detached from the device when folded. His verdict was that it was more likely to appeal as a fashion accessory than a primary device. While the $1,500 price tag may make it sound like an expensive accessory, the Razr comes in below the two main rivals in the nascent market for folding phones - the Samsung Fold ($1,980) and Huawei Mate X ($2,600). Samsung postponed the launch of its Fold in April after reviewers reported that their device screens had broken. Huawei followed suit, saying Samsung's problems had made it decide to conduct further tests on the Mate X prior to its release. Both devices launched eventually - the Fold in September and the Mate X in November. This was despite excited talk among trend forecasters at the start of the year about folding mobiles' imminent arrival, and how they might help to revive a stagnating smartphone market. The giants had been beaten to the post by a little-known California-based company called Royole Corporation, which unveiled a foldable handset called the Flexpai at an event in Beijing in October 2018. The device was never widely available and did not receive strong reviews - Dan Simmons from BBC Click tried a developer version in January 2019. He said at the time that there were no apps that were designed to work with the way the folding screen changed depending on its position. Also in January, Xiaomi president Bin Lin showed off a prototype folding phone - but a consumer-ready product has yet to emerge from the Chinese giant Visit this website below https://www.necticon.com.ng/will-2020-break-the-curse-of-the-folding-phone/

The optimistic view of the last 10 years of consumer technology is that hundreds of millions of people used unbelievable new devices and services to take part in explosive new economies and cultures. The savvier take is to note that consumer tech — most of the all the smartphone — has been a force for change, but its benefits have not always been distributed in ways that are equitable, safe or desirable.Or maybe you are filled with dread by the devices you have allowed into your life over the last decade, all but paralyzed by the knowledge that the nightmare of surveillance, invasion and exploitation in which you live was the direct result of a few thoughtless choices you made in a Best Buy or clicking around on Amazon. You’re in a horror movie.
