I'm Not generalizing this assertion. Of course, it is a hypothesis. It may be True, it May Not. But it's my personal observation.

I observed closely and noticed that women(mothers, wives and girlfriends) aren't really comfortable seeing their sons, husbands and boyfriends being generous. I know of many husbands who cannot help out financially when their wives are around, while some husbands would seek permission and approval from their wives before they can help. There are some men that you can't call on the phone to ask for help at the time they are together with their wives because they might not pick since they already know the reason for the call, and even if they pick, they wouldn't say anything sensible or in that direction.
For mothers, they would prefer you help your siblings instead of an outsider. There was a time I wanted to give out my clothes to someone, but my mum refused when she found out. She said I should give them to my younger brother. She suggests who I can help. Maybe it's maternal instincts, I don't know.
For girlfriends, it's either you're helping them or their families. You don't dare tell some of them that you want to help a friend who is in need cos they will discourage you. They would rather think of milking you off that money. I know women feel they own their men just as mothers feel they own their sons no matter how old they are. They like to domineer...
Personally, I am a man of myself. My mum can't stop me from helping whoever I want to help, even my prospective wife won't dare.

As your friend you should know one or two things he is involved in and look for ways you can render a service that suits his line of business ,that way you are not begging , but using the advantage of friendship to cater to ur needs ( honourably). As when u present a mind blowing proposal to him in line with his business as against some who doesn't have the advantage of friendship with him yours would be considered before the others. With that being said, just let him know u offer a service in his line of work and be sure to deliver on that first job ,you would eventually gain honourably from this said friend instead of flat out begging..
