Zeus, the Great Dane who held the Guinness World Record for being the world’s tallest dog, has died.
The dog, whom owner Kevin Doorlag of Otsego, Michigan, described as a “gentle giant,” stood 44 inches tall and was 7-foot-4 when he stood on his hind legs.
Zeus died Sept. 3, just shy of his 6th birthday, Doorlag told ABC News Thursday.
Doorlag’s family got Zeus when he was 8 weeks old.
“We got him from this couple that had had a litter … and we went and looked at him and fell in love with him,” Doorlag, who works as a veterinary technician, said.
Zeus was a certified therapy dog who visited people in a nearby hospital, Doorlag said.
“He’d sit on people’s laps. I loved to see people’s reactions when he’d sit down,” Doorlag said. “He just seemed to want to make people smile and happy and … he was just a very sweet dog.”
Zeus was named in the Guinness World Records 2013 edition as being the world’s tallest dog.
Doorlag’s wife, Denise, said she loved the reaction she got when they took Zeus outside.
"The most common thing people ask is: 'Is that a dog or a horse?' and 'Where's his saddle?' she said, according to a statement from Guinness at the time the record was announced. The release also said the dog weighed 155 pounds.
Before Zeus set a new record, Guinness said the world’s tallest dog was Giant George, another Great Dane. Giant George, who was one inch shorter than Zeus, died last year at 7.
Zeus had a popular following on Facebook. The page has since been taken down, Doorlag said.
Doorlag said he was gratified by people’s acceptance of his dog.
“I was surprised at how many people just, like, reached out to him and how many people’s, I think, lives he’s touched when we’re doing pet therapy,” he said. “It was just very overwhelming and I loved that about him.”

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of exhibiting a shocking act of indiscretion by hobnobbing with an alleged Boko Haram sponsor, Ali Modu Sheriff, who is not known to have been investigated and cleared of the weighty allegation against him.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party wondered what message President Jonathan was sending to his compatriots and indeed to the international community when he took Modu Sheriff along during his visit to Chad Monday to confer with President Idriss Deby on cooperation against terrorism.
It said: "This action by President Jonathan confirms what the APC has always believed: That the President either knows more than he is willing to admit on the issue of those who are behind the Boko Haram insurgency or he is willing to sacrifice the battle against terrorism on the altar of political expediency. Either way, this action by the President is the height of indiscretion at best, or a palpable exhibition of callowness at worst.
"It also confirms our fears that Modu Sheriff was planted as a mole in the APC by his friends in high places, who are jittery about the birth of the party and would do anything to destabilize it."
APC said the President could not pretend not to be aware of a report sent home by Nigeria’s Defence Adviser in Ndjamena, Chad, in 2011, detailing the suspicious activities of Modu Sheriff in Chad concerning alleged Boko Haram sponsorship and asking the Federal Government to investigate him.

Nigerian star striker Emmanuel Emenike is currently at war with the Enugu State Government over 13 plots of land worth N30 million which he bought to build a sports academy in Enugu according to a report from AfricanFootball.
According to the report, soldiers have invaded the property in Enugu and have prevented any work on it, a development that hasn't gone down well with the footballer. Emenike said he bought the 13 plots of land after the World Cup in Brazil through a special assistant to the Enugu State Governor, Frank Ugwunweze, who handed all documents concerning the land in Emenike's name to the striker.

Sergio Aguero believes Manchester United will re-emerge as genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season under new boss Louis van Gaal.
United endured their worst ever Premier League campaign under David Moyes last term while bitter rivals Manchester City held off Liverpool and Chelsea to claim their second triumph in the last three seasons.
But Aguero has warned his team-mates that, with Van Gaal now at the helm and no European football to distract them, United will carry a serious threat once again.
"This year I think Manchester United will be up there challenging us," he insisted at the club's CityLive event on Thursday.
"Then you have teams like Chelsea and Arsenal who, as always, will be there or thereabouts battling with us for the league.
"But the team I think who is most worthy of having the best chance to threaten is United, because they are not involved in any other competitions other than the English knock-out cups and the league.
"That means they'll get more rest between games than ourselves and some of the other teams and that will work in their favour, like it did last season with Liverpool."
Aguero also revealed he is still several weeks away from making his City return after an extended World Cup campaign with Argentina that was hampered by injury problems.
"I got back here last week and the aim to begin with is two weeks of just hard work to strengthen the legs and to get my fitness right," he added.
"Right now I need that because it's been a good while since I did even a mini pre-season of at least a fortnight.
"By the third week I'll be fully 100 per cent and ready to go.
"I have to get in an hour and a half early and start off with strength exercises and then I work on stability in my hips and sides and then the rest is more straightforward, just to strengthen the pelvic area in order to prevent any further injuries by the groin area of the sort that I'd been having."

Abuja (NAN) – Nigeria has received an experimental drug froman unnamed Nigerian scientist to treat Ebola virus, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said in Abuja on Thursday.
Chukwu, who gave the cheering news at a news conference, gave the name of the drug as “Nanosilver.”
“The only experimental drug we have now is Nanosilver, provided by a Nigerian scientist; details of the drug will be disclosed later to the media.
“However, we have 11 confirmed cases of Ebola in Nigeria, out of these, three are dead, Patrick Sawyer, a Nigeria nurse and ECOWAS protocol officer.
“Apart from Lagos, there is no Ebola case in any states of the federation’’, he said.
Chukwu said the suspected cases that were reported in Abia, Anambra, and Abuja were investigated and proved negative.
He added that Cross River was also free of the disease, adding that the nurse who was under surveillance in Lagos that travelled to Enugu was back to Lagos with members of her family for close monitoring.
“Nobody in Enugu has Ebola disease, all cases are still confined within Lagos’’, said Chukwu.
Adienbong Adaga, the Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote Foundation, announced the donation of N150 million for the Ebola Emergency Operation Centre in Lagos.
She urged other philanthropists in the country to support government financially to curb the spread of the virus.
Labaran Maku, the Minister of Information, thanked the donor and urged all Nigerians to emulate the gesture.
He also thanked international partners for their donations, saying that government was doing everything possible to ensure that the disease did not escalate.

Howard Webb has retired from a refereeing career which included a World Cup final to become technical director of the body which selects and governs Premier League match officials.
Webb ends a 25-year professional career in which he became the first man to officiate showpiece matches of both the Champions League and World Cup in the same year, a feat he achieved in 2010.
The former police officer from Rotherham will take up a newly created position with Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to spearhead the training and development of future top-flight referees.
"I am very excited to start this new chapter in my career after a wonderfully rewarding 25 years on the pitch," Webb, 43, told the Premier League's official website.

A 13-year-old Texas girl, Ariel Tolfree who placed her Samsung Galaxy S4 under her pillow while charging it and fell asleep has explained how she woke up to see it burnt. Tolfree said later that night, she smelled something burning, but never thought it could be her phone. “I didn’t think much of it, so I went back to sleep and then I woke up again and it was more prominent,” she said. Tolfree’s dad however believes the phone overheated, causing the battery to swell and ignite a small fire. In another development, Holly Hewett, 25, plugged her phone in to charge while she slept, but she was later woken up by a sizzling sound and the smell of the burning phone. She explains; ‘I woke up at 4.30am when my boyfriend got up to go to work and looked at my phone to check the time. ‘I noticed it was running low on battery so I plugged it in and put it on charge. ‘At about 5am I checked the time again then rolled over and went back to sleep, but within about 10 minutes of that I heard a sizzling sound. ‘Even though it was dark I could smell the smoke. I picked it up and the screen sparked. ‘As I walked to the bathroom the battery fell out of the casing at the back onto the floor. ‘I didn’t burn myself but there’s a hole in the carpet where it scorched it. The smell was awful, so I opened a window.’ ‘I was on my own and panicked because I’d got no house phone so I didn’t know how to contact anyone to let them know what had happened, she said.

Pandemonium broke out in the Asipa community as an apprentice bricklayer, identified as Rasheed Sulaiman, was shot dead while testing the potency of a bullet-proof charm given to him by a herbalist.
A resident of Asipa, a community in the Ife North Local Government Area, told PUNCH Metro that Sulaiman, on Saturday called his cousin, Siji, to follow him to a secluded place to test the charm. Sulaiman wore the amulet and gave a gun to his cousin to fire at him. The cousin fired the shot and killed Sulaiman instantly.
Residents were unaware of the mission of duo, but the sound of a gunshot was said to have attracted attention of the people of the area to where the incident happened. Siji was said to be found weeping beside the body of the deceased. Siji reportedly explained that the deceased compelled him to shoot at him to test the potency of an amulet.
It was gathered that the deceased, who was known to be a tough guy, could be preparing to use the charm for the governorship election in the state. The incident was said to have triggered panic among the elders of the community who believed that some other youths might have similar charms.
Punch reports the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of Osun state Police Command, Folasade Odoro, could not be reached to react to the incident.

The Facebook Inc. chairman added $1.6 billion to his fortune yesterday after the world’s largest social network closed at a record. The surge elevated the 30-year-old’s net worth to $33.3 billion, moving him past Brin, 40, and Page, 41, as well as Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos, 50, on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Zuckerberg is No. 16 on the ranking. The Google founders are 17th and 18th. Bezos occupies the 20th spot.
“He’s just getting started,” David Kirkpatrick, author of “The Facebook Effect,” said in a telephone interview. “He’s going to become the richest person on the planet.”
The Menlo Park, California-based company posted second-quarter sales that soared 61 percent to $2.91 billion yesterday, exceeding analysts’ average estimate of $2.81 billion. The company’s revenue gain follows Google’s results last week, when the Web-search company posted sales that topped analysts’ estimates, largely based on the strength of online ads.

The company’s performance also propelled the fortunes of other Facebook shareholders, including Dustin Moskovitz, the 30-year-old who started the social network with Zuckerberg at Harvard University a decade ago, and Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s 44-year-old chief operating officer who became one of the world’s youngest female billionaires in January. Sandberg owns about 9.9 million shares valued at $740 million and has collected more than $550 million in share sales.
“The company’s success is growing by the minute,” Kirkpatrick said. “There’s no sign it’s going to slow anytime soon.”

Another day, another air disaster. This is beginning to get scary. An Air Algerie flight flying from Burkina Faso to Algeria with 116 people on board has dropped off radar.
Swift Air, the operators of the aircraft, say they lost contact with the flight 50 minutes after it took off this morning from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. It was supposed to have arrived at Algiers' Houari Boumediene Airport about four hours later but the plane has just disappeared.
"We have lost contact with the plane. At this moment, emergency services and our staff are working on finding out more on this situation." Swiftair said. The plane, an MD-83, has 110 passengers on-board with 2 pilots and four crew members. Air Algerie is Algeria's national airline. Update: The plane crashed in Niger It's been confirmed that the plane crashed near the capital of Niger, Niamey. Flight AH5017 was reported to be flying through an area affected by violent storms.

A 27-year-old undergraduate of Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, Chijioke Ezebuiro, was paraded yesterday July 22nd by the Abia State Police Command for allegedly killing his 87-year-old father, Dr. Emmanuel Ezebuiro. This sad event comes barely three weeks after 21 year old Tolani Ajayi killed his 60 year old father inside the Redeemed Christian Church of God campground.
While parading Chijioke before newsmen, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna said Chijioke is the chief suspect in his father's death because he was the only one around when the deceased was brutally murdered on June 30th at his home in Umuoriehi, Isingwu in Umuahia North LGA of Abia state.
According to his elder brother's statement to the police, Chijioke had often threatened to kill their father. The elder brother said he left their father and Chijioke at home to drop off his children at school only to return to find their father in the pool of his own blood. He immediately called the police after Chijioke could not explain what happened to their father.
Police preliminary reports shows that there was no evidence of someone else gaining access into the home when the octogenarian was murdered. During his interrogation, Chijioke claimed he was having his bath when his father was murdered.
"After taking my bath as I was going towards my room I saw people screaming in my father’s room, so I decided to go inside to know what was happening there. When I went there I saw my brother and my cousin in my father’s room and I saw my dad on top of his bed. I was shocked to see blood on his head. I was so scared I had to go down stairs to call one of my cousins. When I came back with him we were asking them what happened none of them told us anything. He told us to go down stairs the next thing was for me to see police coming to arrest me, took me to the police station, saying I am a murderer, that’s all.” he said. He denied ever threatening his life, maintaining they had a good relationship.

Nine-year-old Saneie Masilela has become the world’s youngest groom for the second time after remarrying the 62-year-old woman he tied the knot with last year. Dressed in a silvery tuxedo, baby-faced Saneie clutched the hand of mother-of-five Helen Shabangu – her children are aged between 28- and 38-years-old – as they repeated their vows a year on in front of 100 guests. The schoolboy says he did it to make the marriage ‘official’ but other villagers in Ximhungwe in Mpumalanga, South Africa describe it as “sickening”. The ceremony – where guests shared a piece of cake – took place in front of Helen’s long-term husband Alfred Shabangu, 66, who was there last year as well. He said: “My kids and I are happy because we don’t have a problem with her marrying the boy – and I don’t care what other people say.” Both families claim the wedding is simply another ‘ritual’ after Saneie was told by his dead ancestors to wed last year and his parents forked out £500 for the bride and another £1,000 for the ceremony. But the schoolboy – the youngest of five children – wanted to follow South African tradition and insisted they have the second ceremony this week to make their marriage official. The young groom said he still hoped he would have a proper wedding to a woman his own age when he was older. He added: “I told my mother that I wanted to get married because I really did want to. “I’m happy that I married Helen – but I will go to school and study hard. “When I’m older I will marry a lady my own age. Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has rejected an offer to become the new coach of Brazil, according to reports in his native Chile.
It has been claimed that Pellegrini was approached as the World Cup reached its climax on Sunday, 24 hours before Luiz Felipe Scolari quit following a calamitous end to Brazil’s bid to win the tournament on home soil.
However, Pellegrini is said to have refused to enter into negotiations with the Brazilian FA, insisting that he wants to see out his three-year contract at the Etihad.Pellegrini and his squad are spending the week training at St Andrews in Scotland before playing their second pre-season friendly against Hearts on Friday.
Director of football Txiki Begiristain is also staying at the famous golf resort although it is unclear whether the two men have discussed the alleged approach from Brazil.
Pellegrini has wasted no time strengthening his squad this summer with the signings of Bacary Sagna on a free transfer from Arsenal, goalkeeper Willy Caballero from Malaga and they have been linked with defender Eliaquim Mangala from Porto.

Mr. Rangaiah told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the commission was working hard at making Nigerians to personally visit its website to make their applications for visa.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to desist from patronising agents and visa racketeers.
“We have decided that Nigerians wishing to visit India for any purpose should personally visit our website to make their applications.
“We now want such applicants to personally, after applying through our website, come directly to the High Commission, without having to use agents or touts. We no longer want Nigerians to wait for any facilitator or pay heavily to agents before getting visas to India,’’ he said.
Mr. Rangaiah also said that the commission would henceforth require Nigerian students offered admissions in Indian Colleges and Universities to present original copies of their admission letters, before being issued visas.
The High Commissioner said that the aim was to detect some young Nigerians who use such falsified admission letters to get into India for “different things.’’
“Their admission letters have to now come to the High Commission directly from the Indian colleges and universities. That way, we will be able to detect any forged document from anybody seeking visa to India,” he added.

The Brazilian football confederation has confirmed it will not retain Luiz Felipe Scolari as head coach of the national team.
Scolari’s contract ended after the World Cup and his chances of staying in the post were effectively ended by his side’s 7-1 humiliation by Germany in the semi-finals.
I was Brazil’s worst defeat in their 100-year history and they then lost 3-0 to Holland in the third-place match.
Scolari, 65, had said after the Holland match on Saturday that it would be up to the Brazil confederation to decide whether he would continue.
“Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and his fellow coaching staff surrendered their positions to the board of the Brazilian Football Confederation. The resignation was accepted by president [José Maria] Marin, who was keen to thank all the coaches and players and, by extension, the Brazilian fans for their support throughout the World Cup campaign.
“Scolari and his entire coaching staff deserve our respect and gratitude. They were responsible for returning to the Brazilian people your love for the team, despite not having achieved our greatest goal.”
The confederation made no announcement about a replacement.

The mopping up operations in Balmo forest is yielding more discoveries of arms stockpiled in underground cells in the forest.
Nigerian military troops who have been excavating various sites in the forest in search of hidden weapons, have so far recovered over 10 rifles along with parts and accessories as well as more than 80 General Purpose Machine Guns, tubes of Rocket Propelled Grenades and Launchers, cables, wires and thousands of rounds of assorted ammunition.
Also recovered in the search on Friday, July 11, 2014 are uniforms of security agencies including protective clothing.
Meanwhile, suspects captured in the forest have been taken into custody and are volunteering information linking the activities in the forest with other terrorist activities in the country.
The mopping up operation continues.

Terrorism like any other form of organized crime, is also highly strategic, deliberate, and calculative. Some of the wealthiest terrorist organizations out there have been ranked and Boko Haram comes 7th, according to educated estimates reported in the media, bringing to light the dark reality of the profits they’ve reaped at the expense of other people’s lives.
7. Boko Haram: Over $70 million The Boko Haram are a Nigerian terrorist group who fight to overthrow the Nigerian government in order to implement an Islamist regime. They have bombed UN headquarters and most recently abducted over 200 Nigerian school girls in defense of their namesake “Western Education is Sin”. Since they’ve remained off the radar since their recent attacks, it’s unclear just how much money they make from their numerous kidnappings and the subsequent ransoms they procure. It has been determined, however, that between 2006-2011, they collected over $70 million.

6. Lashkar-e-Tayyiba: $100 million a year The Lashkar E Taiba, who call like to call themselves the “Army of The Righteous”, was founded in the 1990′s. They’re a militant group originating from Pakistan who also wreak havoc on India. Hypocritically enough, apart from raging war and killing hundreds of civilians, they also establish several charitable organizations in Pakistan, like hospitals and schools. Regardless, their extremist ideals and murderous ways of executing them render them a deadly threat. Their annual revenue is estimated to be around $100 million, much of which is funded through donations from affiliate parties.


5. FARC: $80-$350 million a year The Marxist guerrilla group, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army (FARC) has been around since the 1960’s. They’ve been dubbed a terrorist threat in their country due to the numerous kidnappings, assassinations, and bombings they’ve executed on Columbian citizens in the name of anti-imperialism. Apart from the money the make from collecting ransoms and through extortion, FARC also produces and sells vast quantities of illegal drugs that further fuel their high annual revenue.


4. Al-Qaeda: Over $100 million a year Founded by Osama Bin Ladin, the global Islamist
militant organization, Al-Qaeda, a name which translates to ‘The Base” has been around since the 1980s. Having attacked several civilian and military regions, Al-Qaeda is well known around the world as one of the largest and deadliest terrorist groups. Suicide bombings are among their favorite tactics of destruction. What makes this group such a tough force to combat, is the fact that they have wide-spread, terrorist group allies. Before their 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, the CIA estimated that Al-Qaeda made well over $30 million a year, raised mostly through donations; today, that number has surely increased. Bin Ladin was himself a multimillionaire at the time he founded the organization and about $10-15 million was reportedly paid annually to the Taliban while he was leader.

Luis Suarez is on the brink of officially completing his sensational transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona after the terms of a deal worth just over €88 million were agreed on Wednesday night.
The agreement comes after a week of negotiations between the clubs, with an announcement expected in the coming days - perhaps even within 24 hours.
Barcelona have captured Suarez in a straight cash deal after agreeing to meet the release clause in the Liverpool contract he signed last December.
It is believed that Suarez will undergo initial medical examinations from Barca doctors in his native Uruguay, where he has been staying following his country's elimination from the World Cup.
Officials from the Catalan club have been negotiating with their counterparts from Merseyside in the last week over the structure of payments in the deal, with Liverpool pushing for a higher initial sum.
An agreement has now been reached and the final formalities will be completed before Suarez is announced as Barcelona's marquee signing of the summer.
The 27-year-old is currently serving a four-month ban - which runs until October 26 - for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini while playing for Uruguay in his nation's final World Cup group stage match.
Under the terms of the suspension, Suarez is not allowed to train with his club or enter the confines of any stadium during his ban.
Barca will partly fund the signing of the 27-year-old by selling Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal. The Chile World Cup star will move to Emirates Stadium after Arsenal agreed a package worth €40m (£31.8m) with the Spanish club.
Liverpool will now look to strengthen their squad using some of the money from the Suarez deal. The Merseysiders are on the verge of completing a triple swoop for Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, Lille striker Divock Origi and Southampton defender Dejan Lovren.
