Nigeria is rightly described as a country of two cities - one for the majority of the poor and the other for the affluent parasitic class of past and present rulers and their cronies. Ours is a nation whose thrones of power have been seized by uncouth and unlettered politicians who are acting out of sheer materialistic motive. The lure of public treasury has become the only balm that soothes their avaricious souls.

Their cupidity, as we all know, has brought about untold hardship on millions of Nigerians who have been merely clutching at straws these years in the most difficult circumstances, hoping against hope that somehow things will shake down well if they tried harder.

One of those Nigerians soaked in financial misery is a 37-year old Francis. He has cut the image of a struggling and helpless young man who has come to the end of the tether after going unthinkable extents to finding a job.

"Even if I could endure the hunger, how about my kids and wife?", asked Francis in the middle of our conversation, his face tight with moderated anxiety and frustration as he struggled to condense his winding thoughts into a few words.

I tried to chivvy him up, assuring him that all would be well soon. But that did not seem to console his furrowed brow as he said he planned moving to his village presently. His sun had set a long long time ago as he has been experimenting with some survival measures, he said.

Like Francis, millions of Nigerians are being plagued by worries and fear of the future, and so feel discouraged and defeated in their seemingly unending dim darkness of impoverishment.

Life in Nigeria today has wrecked their dream ships on the sharp rocks of reality. And so hope is their only solace in the midst of their financial woes. They feel that our current economical climate is too harsh to aid the fulfilment of their dreams.

But when there is life, there is hope, I assured Francis and offered him a little help as I could, for which his wife was almost bathing me with thankful tears.

Friends, we must not loose sight of the poor as many of our countrymen are suffering. The good news though is that we all can help to lighten their loads, no matter how little.

Let's feed the poor -today!
