Science/Technology / See How Robotic Dog Is Now Helping Hospitals Fight The Coronavirus by Vincent1507: 1:45pm On Jan 24, 2021
• Boston Dynamics' Spot robot is helping hospitals fight COVID-19 (coronavirus) by reducing the amount of direct contact healthcare workers must have with patients.
• The company is open-sourcing all of its work so other mobile robotics makers can leverage the platform to help more frontline workers.
• Next up: Boston Dynamics is also devising ways to use Spot to disinfect hospitals. In some places, robots are already using UV-C lights to do so.

In the U.S., at least 5,400 nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers treating COVID-19 (coronavirus) patients have contracted the disease themselves. Of those medical professionals, dozens have died—and that's a conservative estimate. Treating patients with a virus that can live on surfaces for days and propagate through the air in respiratory droplets is dangerous, life-threatening work no matter how you slice it.

That's why some Boston-area hospitals have turned to an unlikely assistant: a robotic dog named Spot.

"Starting in early March, [we] started receiving inquiries from hospitals asking if our robots could help minimize their staff’s exposure to COVID-19," Boston Dynamics, the maker of the robot, said in a blog post Thursday. "One of the hospitals that we spoke to shared that, within a week, a sixth of their staff had contracted COVID-19 and that they were looking into using robots to take more of their staff out of range of the novel virus."

Spot has seen internet stardom on YouTube for hijinks like loading a dishwasher, dancing, and hanging out with Adam Savage, but Boston Dynamics recently made the robot available for commercial lease. Since then, the robo-dog has helped bomb squads and worked on an oil rig, but this is its most important gig yet.

Science/Technology / Ten(10) Important Interview Questions Engineers Should Prepare For. by Vincent1507: 10:05am On Jan 24, 2021
1. When did you start your job search? Have you been offered any positions?

What they’re really asking:
This question is trying to establish whether there is any particular reason you aren’t currently employed. Also, the company won’t want to hire someone that has applied for a job simply because they are desperate to be employed.

How to answer:
Be relaxed and explain that you are looking for a company and role with the right fit, and that you are quite choosy when it comes to finding the ‘right job’. You may then need to answer what you believe the ‘right job’ entails.

2. What do you enjoy most/least about engineering?

What they’re really asking:
The interviewer is trying to gauge your general attitude towards work.

How to answer:
You should tailor this to the responsibilities of the role you are interviewing for and try to keep your answer centred on the positives.

3. Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

What they’re really asking:
Your potential employer will want to be sure that you aren’t going to move on to another job too soon.

How to answer:
You should research a career path that would flow from the position for which you are interviewing and ensure that you emphasise the intention to master the demands of that position first.

Science/Technology / How To Pick The Right Motor Oil For Your Car by Vincent1507: 12:36am On Jan 23, 2021
Given all the options for motor oil options out there, choosing the right oil for your car might seem like a daunting task. While there is a mountain of information about the various oil choices, the first step is honestly quite simple: Look in your car’s manual.

The owner's manual for your car will list its recommended oil weight, whether that's a standard format like 10W-30 or something more unusual. That number refers to the viscosity (or thickness) of the oil that you should use. You should adjust which weight and type for the seasons and your expected use of the car, which we’ll explain below. For regular use in moderate temperatures, what’s listed in your owner’s manual is fine. Always choose an oil from a brand that displays the starburst symbol that indicates the oil has been tested by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

You’ll also notice a two-character service designation on the container. API's latest service standards are SP for gasoline engines and CK-4 for diesels. These letters are based on a group of laboratory and engine tests that determine the oil’s ability to protect the engine from wear and high-temperature deposits and sludge. API has a full list of these standards here in case you’re curious, but make sure you’re buying an oil that’s been tested under a current standard. As of this writing, that includes SP, SN, SM, SL and SJ for gasoline engines and CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4 and FA-4 for diesels.

Science/Technology / How To Prevent And Remove Rust On Your Car Like A Pro by Vincent1507: 12:49pm On Jan 22, 2021
An ominous brown stain on the fender. A bubble in the paint at the bottom of a door. Soaked floors after hitting a puddle. These are signs the iron worm has been hard at work: rust.

Otherwise fine cars are routinely sent to early graves because of rust, even though it’s a largely avoidable problem. With iron-based metals, battling oxidation can feel like a Sisyphean task. In spite of the advanced coatings and alloys developed by chemists and engineers, iron’s unstable chemical makeup means it will always succumb to rust in a natural environment. In fact, iron and most steel will completely reduce to iron oxide and other constituent elements over a long enough time.

This doesn't mean that your car is doomed! Understanding how cars rust, your car’s problem areas, and how to address that brown, flaky trouble means that your pride and joy can stay on the road as long as you do.

Why Do Cars Rust?

Rust forms as a result of the electrochemical breakdown of iron-based metals. This breakdown is the result of oxidation, which is the process where iron surface molecules react with oxygen in the environment and produce a new molecule, Fe2O3, otherwise known as iron oxide. That iron oxide is rust.

Pure iron doesn't oxidize as aggressively. Examine an old iron engine block and you'll see a thin surface layer of rust but little penetration into the metal. Unfortunately, iron alone isn't a particularly good material for building cars, so today’s cars typically use steel alloys. Adding a dollop of carbon to iron creates steel, which offers dramatic improvements in flexibility, tensile strength, and formability. However, this added strength comes at a cost, as it adds impurities that accelerate the formation of rust.

Science/Technology / The Most Anticipated Cars Of 2021 by Vincent1507: 11:25pm On Jan 21, 2021
Like almost every industry, automotive manufacturing took a beating early in 2020. Sales dropped as buyers scaled back their spending, and carmakers struggled to keep their assembly lines moving in the face of new safety requirements and supplier disruptions. As a result, a lot of highly anticipated new models have been delayed. But the industry has regained its mojo and sales are up.

Besides, carmakers have a lot of development pipelines that aren’t easy to turn off. And consumer interest in new technology—particularly in performance cars and electric vehicles—keeps the global appetite strong. Daily commuting may have dropped dramatically in the spring, but people still need, and want, cars.

We researched and vetted models due to arrive on the market next year (or have just landed) that we’re most thrilled about, whether because they debut some new helpful tech, represent a significant development in car-making, or are just capable daily drivers. The rigs here are a reassuring sign that the wealth of options for well-designed and robustly engineered transportation hasn’t waned.

Science/Technology / Everything You Need To Know When Buying Car Tires by Vincent1507: 10:54pm On Jan 21, 2021
Unless you’re replacing your car’s tires with the identical set that it came with, you’re going to face some decisions. What’s the story with treadwear? Can you replace a run-flat tire with something else? Are winter tires worth the investment?

Here are some answers—and specific recommendations—to inform your search for a new set of rubber.

Treadwear Rating: How Much Should I Pay Attention to That?

Among the specs you confront when tire shopping, treadwear is one of the more mysterious. If one tire has a treadwear rating of 400 and another is 600, does that mean the latter tire will last 50 percent longer? Not really, because although there’s a standardized Uniform Tire Quality Grade test to measure treadwear on specific roads in West Texas, the test is so easy that most tires get crazy-high scores.

Science/Technology / This Guy Didn't Want To Get A Haircut In Public, So He Built A Robot Barber(watc by Vincent1507: 10:28pm On Jan 21, 2021
YouTuber Shane Wighton has built a robotic barber that can cut his hair.

• In his video, Wighton explains how he trained the robot to separate sections of his hair, like a stylist might with a comb or their fingers.

• This isn't Wighton's first quarantine project. Earlier this year, Popular Mechanics spoke with him about his never-miss basketball hoop.

While some states have partially reopened and loosened restrictions on barber shops and hair salons, not everyone is ready to head out in public for a haircut just yet. That means many people around the world are still sporting shaggy quarantine cuts

Science/Technology / How To Get Keys Out Of A Locked Car by Vincent1507: 10:08pm On Jan 21, 2021
It happens to the best of us: You’re frazzled and thinking about eight different things, but not about the moment at hand. Your keys are in the car, the doors are locked, and you have an appointment in ten minutes.

All is not lost. You may not make your appointment, but there are solutions.

As firefighters, one of the core principles we’re taught is to solve the problem at hand while causing the least collateral damage possible. “Try before you pry” is one of the first lessons in any forcible entry class. It’s catchy and memorable, but it also just works. The same principle applies to locking your keys in the car: Try the obvious solutions first, then work your way up to harder ones.

Emergencies

In the event of an emergency where a person or an animal is locked in the car, dial 911 immediately. If help doesn’t arrive soon and you have to break the window, do so as safely as possible. Choose a window away from any occupants. If you have tape of any kind, use it to cover as much of the window as you can, as this will keep the glass somewhat together when it is broken. Safely remove as much glass as possible once the window is broken.
