I’m not a fan of them at all. Many of them are even poor in Latin. One even try to change our culture of celebrating half mass in Latin every first Sunday of the month. From your example, it is likely these students speak urhobo and pidgin English at home so are finding your advanced grammar too steep in their learning curve.

My organization went to an Urhobo Community near Ughelli for a sensitization programme and we went to a school.

The kids were something else.

Too Dull and had very poor assimilation of simple sentences and examples.
