A member representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Dachung Bago has said that ‘Yahoo yahoo’ boys in Nigeria make more money through cybercrime activities. The lawmaker who is a member of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on the increasing incidents of SIM swap fraud in his reaction to EFCC’s revelation of how bank officials collude with cybercriminals wondered at the sophistication with which cybercriminals operates. While asking the anti-graft agency to double effort in tackling the menace of fraud, Bago lamented that yahoo boys are way ahead in cybercrime and transferring vast sums of money from Bank account illegally. He lashed at Nigerians for always accusing politicians, insisting that Yahoo boys make more money cheaply and illegally than politicians. “A single yahoo boy can transfer vast sums of money equal to the budget of a state at a go. “They sit down with their laptop transferring money illegally from a bank customer to their own, while politicians cannot have the money up to a monthly allocation of a local government in four years. ” The lawmaker urged the EFCC not to spare anyone caught in cybercrime activities, noting that cybercrime laws were sufficient to deal with culprits. https://zenithtips.com/yahoo-boys-make-more-money-cheaply-and-illegally-than-politicians-plateau-lawmaker/

Aminu Tambuwal gave the advice while fielding questions from newsmen at the end of the forum meeting held on Wednesday night in Abuja. He advised the federal lawmakers to respect the views of Nigerians on the bill. “I am not sure I have heard any governor come out to say he is in support of the death penalty for hate speech. “I believe the National Assembly should hold a public hearing on that bill so that due process of lawmaking is followed so that the views of Nigerians not just the governors will be well captured on that bill. “They should respect the views of Nigerians in whatever may be the direction of debate and the eventual passage or otherwise of that bill,” Tambuwal said. Asked of the governors’ position on the Finance Bill submitted to the NASS by President Muhammadu Buhari to increase Value Added Tax (VAT) from five to 7.5. percent, Tambuwal appealed to Nigerians to show more understanding with the Federal Government. He said that the governors were in support of what would improve the revenue generation drive of both the federal and state governments. “We are appealing to those who probably have no proper understanding of the contexts of those bills to kindly have a rethink of them and reflect on the quantum of work ahead of us. e need a lot of resources to turn around infrastructure, to invest in education, healthcare and every sector of our national life. “There is an urgent need for more revenue in Nigeria. So, I appeal that we should show more understanding with the Federal Government in that regard,” he said. On the December deadline for the implementation of minimum wage issued by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to state governors, Tambuwal said the various states were engaging labor unions on the issue. “I am sure it is a work in progress. Before December all the states must have finished working out the details on the issue of minimum wage across the federation. “We are very much committed to the welfare and wellbeing of our workforce and therefore we shall continue to ensure we do our best on what needs to be done.” Tambuwal said the forum received an update on the outcome of its meeting in the US with Aliko Dangote Foundation, and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Human Capital Development with a focus on Primary Health Care (PHC). He said that at the meeting, the governors and the two Foundations expressed commitment to the Seattle Declaration aimed at promoting collaboration to transform PHC at the subnational level in Nigeria https://zenithtips.com/hate-speech-bill-respect-the-views-of-nigerians-governors-tell-nass/

Jega stated this on Thursday, November 14th at the University of Ibadan, UI, while delivering 2019 Convocation Lecture titled, “Towards Credible Electoral Process and Sustainable Political Systems in Nigeria: What role for Universities”. He said, “All over Africa, and indeed, to some extent, throughout the developing world, the electoral process is failing to entrench good governance and stable and sustainable democratic political systems as a result of what can be termed as a deficit of electoral integrity”. According to him, deeply embedded unwholesome practices, such as use of money, violence, incumbency powers, and a range of electoral malpractices and fraudulent activities in the electoral process grossly undermine its utility as a vehicle for liberal democratic development. He revealed that dominant political classes can, and often do, hijack the electoral process through various means, to access power for selfish and self-serving objectives, rather than for democratic development that would satisfy the needs and aspirations of majority of the citizens in the country. “In virtually all cases, ritualized elections, which lack integrity merely serve to legalize, if not ‘legitimize’, access and control of power into executive or legislative arms of government by people unconcerned with, or indifferent to, the requirements of sustainable democratic development. Hence, such elections do not catalyze, nor guarantee responsive and responsible representation and/or governance”, he said. Jega affirmed that studies of elections and election observation reports generally, and on Nigeria in particular, exposed profound evidence of persistent electoral malpractices, the enormity and consequences of which undermined the integrity of the elections and the democratization processes they are supposed to engender. The electoral administrator stated that, “a situational and contextual analysis of the electoral process in Nigeria reveals an incredible level of electoral malpractices and thus acute deficiency in electoral integrity, which are no doubt among the major sources/causes of political instability, weakness and inadequacy of the governance process and eroded legitimacy of elected government I the country”. For the restoration and entrenching electoral integrity, Jega advocated for continuous legal and administrative reforms, as well as sensitization and public enlightenment, “most significantly, there is need for all stakeholders to strengthen their constructive engagement with the electoral process, with a view to improving, protecting and defending its integrity.” https://zenithtips.com/electoral-process-has-failed-in-nigeria-attahiru-jega-says/ |
