Hey Nairalanders! I’m running a small, non-profit instance of Diaspora – a privacy-friendly, ad-free, and decentralized alternative to Facebook. The server is hosted in South Africa, and I’m curious: Would you use it if it meant no ads, no tracking, and full control over your data? It’s not as fancy as Facebook, but it’s simple, respectful, and built for people who value privacy. Try it out: https://lethu.africa What would make you switch from Facebook/Twitter to something like this? #Decentralized #Privacy #AfricanTech #OpenSource #Diaspora |
A few months ago, I decided to launch a Diaspora instance specifically for Africa. It’s called https://lethu.africa, and it’s hosted on a server in South Africa. At first glance, this might seem like a small, technical project—just another social network in a world already saturated with them. But for me, it’s about something much bigger: reclaiming control, fostering independence, and creating a space where African voices can thrive without the interference of big tech algorithms or corporate agendas. What is diaspora-network at all? Diaspora is part of the Fediverse, a decentralized network of independently run servers that communicate with each other. Unlike traditional social media platforms, there’s no single company controlling the entire ecosystem. Instead, anyone can run their own instance (or "pod" , set their own rules, and connect with users on other pods. Diaspora’s feed is a calm, ad-free space where open-source enthusiasts, activists, and creators exchange knowledge and culture—without the toxicity or algorithmic manipulation of Twitter/X What do you think? Interesting or just another social media in the ocean? |
Nice - I like it. Many different versions of the same expressions. I do most translations with deepl.com - it also has a thesaurus, but obviously not for the African languages. |
Does Africa need more Fediverse nodes? I set up http://lethu.africa – thoughts? Diaspora is a decentralized, community-owned social network – no single company controls it, so users own their data and there’s no ads or tracking. It’s part of the Fediverse (like Mastodon), meaning you can connect with users across different platforms. Built on open-source software, it prioritizes privacy, transparency, and user freedom over profit. |
