My dad once made a statement that instantly changed my mindset towards relationships. In his words: “Princess, introduction is not marriage. So stop acting so cozy with a guy who has done the bare minimum.” Shockingly, his words hooked my heart the way a fish gets caught in a net , suddenly, completely, with no escape. From that moment, this one statement made me develop a visceral hatred for a particular phrase: “Our wife.” Any attempt for someone to call me “our wife,” I will instantly rebuke the person and respond, “I am not his wife yet.” I usually receive that instant look of surprise, as though I have said something extreme. But to me, it was my way of helping myself stay aware of reality without beautifying it. In my opinion, the introduction ceremony in Nigerian culture is when the lady introduces the man she is interested in marrying to the family.

There is a form of trauma that comes with waiting for a man to marry you officially after years of living with him and having his children. Sometimes, you don’t see the years creep by because you are caught in the web of being too busy , cleaning, nursing, and being faithful to your children’s father. This is how Chizzy Ernest stayed for 15 years with her partner, giving birth to five children while holding on to that hope. Sharing her experience on social media, Chizzy said that she to leave because the relationship became toxic, but her father shut the door against her and her children. Sometimes, African women find themselves in this painful pattern of cohabiting with their children’s father, holding on to promises that one day, he will “do the needful.” CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO READ MORE- https://www.voiceyourstories.com/relationship-trauma15-years-without-marriage/

One of the most heartbreaking experiences a pregnant woman can face is watching the fruit of her labour cut short. Chiwetalu Charity has worn these shoes while giving birth to her children.. The Nigerian woman recently took to social media to share her deeply personal journey, one marked by strength, loss, and difficult decisions. Charity, a woman living without legs, revealed that she has undergone two cesarean sections (CS), and heartbreakingly, neither child survived. After enduring such traumatic experiences, she admits she no longer has the strength to try for a third time. In her words, she posed a powerful question: Do you know what it costs to be a CS mom? Do you know the pain it costs to be a CS mom? These questions reveal the depth of pain, courage, and sacrifice that often go unseen. A cesarean section is not just a medical procedure; it may turn out to be a bridge of no return, except you scuffle to survive. According to her, a woman is taken into the theatre, given medication to numb the pain, and then doctors carefully cut through layers of tissue to bring life into the world. Afterward, she is stitched back together and left to begin a long and often painful recovery. Charity also shared that in the recovery room, the woman faces overwhelming challenges where simple acts like her urinating, walking or even sitting up can be so excruciating. The woman with a lower-limb disability stressed that going through a CS procedure once becomes an unimaginable experience, let alone going through it twice.. I woke up recently with roaring negative thoughts, they were so intense and I could feel the voices at every corner of my brain. “Mercy, you are not good enough”, ” “you didn’t do well”, you are this, you are that, it went on and on. They all sounded like afro beat medley in my head. I broke down a couple of times but managed to watch couple of YouTube videos to get inspiration. I thought to myself if one could ever eliminate self doubt in their minds? Or eternally block negative thoughts from their brain ? Well I later found out from Mel Robbins that having negative thoughts and feelings will always spring up at any point in our lives and the only way to overcome it is to take ACTION. Every human being struggle with moments of imposter syndrome. It is called intellectual self doubt where you feel you are not competent enough. It often occur when you start thinking of doing something but you are having self doubt. Some times, you will feel that you are unworthy or believe people will start perceiving you as not competent enough to carry out a certain task. In one of the streets in Lagos, one could feel the coziness of the the atmosphere in the vicinity . It was a weekend and bars graciously opened up their doors to welcome men who just wanted to drown in their momentary pain, sorrow, happiness, or perhaps depression with their favourite addictive brew, popularly known as “green bottles”. One of the bars I visited was just at the corner of the street; its shade could accommodate only a handful, but more space was made available outside. The medley music played complemented the mood for the night, and I guess the men there had their ears seasoned with good Afrobeat rhythms.. There is an analogy that states, ‘When you were born, you looked like your parents, but when you die, you look like your decisions.’ This profound statement’s ideology must have awakened the inner power in Phillis Wheatley, as she dared to walk through the valley of the shadow of death to fulfill her purpose. Torn between the deep red sea and the devil, with no iota of hope, Wheatley defied reality’s odds to become the pioneer of what can be contemporarily described as the legend of words. Delving into her remarkable life story, Phillis Wheatley was a slave from Senegal purchased by an American. Sold at just seven years old, this must have tainted young Wheatley’s childhood experience. Amidst her plethora of pain and misery, she began writing poetry in a foreign language at thirteen. https://www.voiceyourstories.com/phillis-wheatley-the-extraordinary-poet/ |
I can’t remember the last year I jogged but it was a pretty long time. I remembered sharing my first experience of my jogging exercise from University of Uyo Main Campus to Water Fountain at Nwaniba Road, on social media. It was not a smooth ride but I had the last laugh. Well, I was admonished by netizens not to stop, I actually adhered to their advice after jogging one more day. During the weekend, I challenged myself to hit the street and jog to water fountain after years of attempting this marathon race. I needed a company and my younger was kind enough to join me on my journey. Although she delayed, we actually hit the street pass 5 am . I started jogging from the entrance of the house, even though my sister said we should start the exercise at the main tarred road. I didn’t stop, I kept going. TODAY is a gift from God, therefore I will acknowledge it with thanksgiving in my heart and lay out thoughtful plans to beautify it. For TODAY is not Yesterday, neither is it Tomorrow. Never will I compare the day to any other day because it is not worth it. TODAY is TODAY, a day that I will never have anymore once the clock throbs midnight. For this purpose, I will rejoice TODAY, blush it with gladness at heart, and adore it with historical deeds. I will say ‘no’ to mood swings and I will say ‘yes’ to the inner desires of the heart. I will view the day as a glitter of diamond or refined gold worth valuing. READ MORE BY CLICKING THE LINK BELOW: https://www.voiceyourstories.com/rekindling-the-heart-of-today/ |
As the social media was overflowing with congratulations for Davido and Chioma on Tuesday, I couldn’t help but think about Davido’s baby mamas. Amidst the 80% of people wishing the newlyweds a happy married life, I estimate that only 15% of them paused to consider the impact on Davido’s baby mamas, and the possibility of someone ‘warming their shoes’ . When it comes to filling the shoes of Davido’s baby mamas, they must have seen how extravagant and romantic the ceremony was, with Davido gazing lovingly into Chioma’s eyes. They would have witnessed the emotional moment when he flooded his cheeks with tears and showering her with countless kisses, all captured in the videos and photos. These romantic gestures were on full display and hard to miss. I believe Davido’s Baby Mamas must have had full dosage of the momentarily fantasy and this might have caused them to be traumatized or emotionally tortured. No woman wants to see her father’s child in the arms of another woman or seeing him getting married to another but what will she do if she is left with the only option of upholding the tag of a “baby Mama”? Some time ago, I asked whether it is okay for Sex Workers’ Day to be acknowledged and given a significant date. A trail of comments got hooked on the question and their perspective on the post was quite interesting and impactful. June 2nd is a day set aside to acknowledge Sex Workers‘ for their kind gesture towards their humanitarian services to men, especially satisfying men’s high libido. Again I ask, should they be acknowledged for such services or should the date be flushed down the lane where maggots seemingly have a delightful time? https://www.voiceyourstories.com/should-sex-workers-day-be-acknowledged/ |
