Manchester United moved to the top of the Premier League table thanks to goals from Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata as they beat Sunderland 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal’s side capitalised on Manchester City’s defeat at Tottenham earlier in the day to move a point about their city rivals.

Memphis opened the scoring deep into first-half stoppage time, tapping home Juan Mata’s pass after a superb cross-field pass by Daley Blind.

Rooney then added a second shortly after the break, the ball hitting his knee and flying past Costel Pantilimon after some good work from Anthony Martial before Mata grabbed a third in the 90th minute.

The Argentina forward was withdrawn in the first half with what looked like a serious injury, before the in-form Uruguay striker took the game away from the visitors

A first half injury to Lionel Messi overshadowed a comfortable 2-1 Barcelona win over Las Palmas in Saturday’s La Liga clash.

Barcelona went 1-0 up in the first half through a fine Luis Suarez header, but it was the injury to the Argentine, shortly before the goal, that concerned the Catalan club most.

Messi went down with what looked like a knee injury and was withdrawn on 10 minutes to be replaced by young forward Munir.

And Suarez managed to add to his first half goal after the break, blasting the ball into the roof of the net after 54 minutes to put Barcelona in a commanding position, though Neymar was not able to relieve Los Cules recent penalty worries, missing after 66 minutes following a foul on Suarez.

Jonathan Viera managed to pull one back for the visitors after 88 minutes, but the goal came to late to really affect the result.

Despite the injury to the 28-year-old, Barcelona managed to secure a comfortable win, overcoming their disappointing 4-1 defeat to Celta Vigo on Wednesday.

Goals from Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Kane and Erik Lamela ensured a controversial win over the Premier League table toppers

Tottenham pulled off a fantastic 4-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, aided by a string of offside decisions in the lead up to goals missed by officials.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring midway through the first half and there were suggestions that he was marginally in front of the last Spurs defender when Yaya Toure played him through.

There were no such uncertainties for the equaliser as Kyle Walker was well offside ahead of firing a cross in which was half-cleared to allow Eric Dier to lash low into the bottom corner from 30 yards.

Toby Alderweireld put the visitors into the lead with a header from a looped free kick before Harry Kane opened his goalscoring account for the Premier League season – although replays suggested he was also offside when Christian Eriksen struck the free kick which cannoned off the bar and into the path of the England international.

Lamela rounded off the jubilant result for Mauricio Pocettino’s men, which leaves Man City vulnerable to being leapfrogged in the Premier League table by Manchester United.
