The Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that her office reached out to the newly elected UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, but received no response. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Dabiri-Erewa stated that Nigeria would not compel the British politician to embrace her Nigerian roots if she chooses not to. “It depends on whether she embraces her Nigerian identity. We reached out to her once or twice, but there was no response. We don’t force anyone to acknowledge being Nigerian,” she explained. The former lawmaker noted that NiDCOM has always been open to engaging Nigerians abroad who value their heritage, citing the example of a former Miss Universe Nigeria who connected with Nigeria only after facing challenges in South Africa. She then identified with Nigeria, came to Nigeria, and we hosted her. If the Nigerian blood is in you, you’re always a Nigerian,” she added. Badenoch, born in London in 1980, spent part of her childhood in Lagos and the United States, where her mother was a lecturer. The NiDCOM chief further stated that the choice to identify with Nigeria ultimately rests with Badenoch, who must decide if she values her Nigerian heritage. “We are open to working with anyone who sees themselves as Nigerian, but it’s not something we can force,” she concluded. https://punchng.com/nidcom-reaches-out-to-kemi-badenoch-receives-no-response-abike-dabiri/ |

It's been long since we last heard from Moh247 on this forum. It's moniker came to mind when a Nairalander who goes by the nickname "Helinues" mentioned his case few days ago. I remember vividly when he got into a heated argument with a member on this forum years ago; screenshot below. I also remember him having another heated argument with a female Nairalander who claimed to be a witch. I also remember both taking bet with eachother to deal with one another. Ever since this incident, I heard from a grapevine that Moh247 had suffered from a lot of mysterious encounters and that's why he's been away from this forum Let's learn to maintain absolute decorum on this forum because life is too short.

Hundreds of youths in Uso Community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Saturday took to the streets to protest the inclusion of the community in Owo North-West Local Government Development Area without making it a headquarters. The protesters also faulted the state government’s creation of Owo North-West LCDA but made a smaller town the headquarters at the expense of Uso, saying it would have been good for the community to be left under Owo Local Government. Speaking during the protest, the leader of the protesters, Mr Dare Oluwafemi said the government had not been fair to the Uso community in the creation of the LCDAs in the Owo area by denying them the headquarters of the Owo North-West LCDA. He said it was an affront to the community, having in the past written and made it clear to the government to desist from including it, “In the aberrantly, lopsidedly and unfairly created LCDA which named the headquarters in Emure-Ile instead of Uso.” According to him, the Uso community had suffered deprivation due to its cultural differences with the Owo people. He said, “Our position on this matter is that it is a slap on our community to be given two slots of supervisors, while Emure retains five with the chairmanship position. Uso has been the economic and political headquarters of the ward since its creation. “Those chosen from the community in the steering committee of the LCDAs have rejected their membership which was the reason they did not attend the inauguration. “All we want is to remain under the administration of Owo Local Government Area as our community is being denied the headquarters of the late Governor Akeredolu ill-created Owo North West LCDA.” However, the monarch of the Uso community, Oba Ademola Oyinbade, advised the youths to return to their daily activities and assured them that the leadership of the community would engage the government and stakeholders to address the issue. PUNCH Online reports that the state High Court sitting in Akure, nullified the newly created 33 LCDAs in the state. The court described the LCDAs, which were created by the immediate former governor of the state, late Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, as illegal and unlawful. In the judgment delivered by Justice A.O Adebusuoye, the court said it was illegal for a governor to sign a law outside the state, adding that the LG Creation Law 2023 signed by late Akeredolu in Ibadan, outside the state, was “Unconstitutional, illegal, null and void.” However, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kayode Ajulo, said the state government had filed an appeal against the judgement. https://punchng.com/youths-protest-inclusion-in-new-lcda-demand-return-to-old-lg/

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has faulted an attempt by the Coalition of North-East Elders Forum to stifle the right of Senator Ali Ndume from criticizing the President Bola Tinubu-led administration. The PUNCH reports that the Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South), had claimed that President Bola Tinubu was unaware of the current situation outside the Presidential Villa. Ndume alleged that the President has been fenced off and caged by certain forces. To this end, the Coalition of North-East Elders Forum had questioned the rationale behind Senator Ndume’s persistent outburst against the Bola Tinubu-led government, warning Ndume to stop attacking the president or lose the election in 2027. But the AYCF kicked against the action of the North-East Elders Forum, accusing the Forum of attempting to suppress Senator Ndume’s freedom of expression as enshrined in both national and international conventions. A statement released by AYCF President-General, Yerima Shettima, in Kaduna on Monday, noted that the senator representing Borno South at the National Assembly was covered by law as such, his views must be respected and not to be suppressed. Shettima said, “The attack from CNEF against Senator Ndume is vindictive, unwarranted, and an unacceptable affront to democratic principles of freedom and fair play. “It is a brutal encroachment on his right to freedom of expression, safeguarded by various international treaties and conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory.” The AYCF leader also expressed concern over growing speculation Senator Ndume might be relieved of his position as the Chief Whip of the Senate. He warned that any further attempts to breach Senator Ndume’s fundamental right to hold differing views would be vehemently resisted. “Any government that cannot be criticized is a liability,” he stated while urging the North-East elders to desist from unnecessary attacks on the person Senator Ndume. While the AYCF boss clarified that the Forum was against protests of any nature, he noted that the lawmaker was on point when he was quoted on the current hardship in the country. Shettima urged the government to heed the observations made by the senator for the benefit of Nigerian citizens while warning the North East elders against manipulating and politicizing security issues for their own gain. “The observations raised by Senator Ndume should be heeded by the government, as they reflect the collective concerns of many Nigerians facing hardships,” he added. https://punchng.com/anti-tinubus-comments-within-ndumes-rights-says-northern-group/?

As Nigeria battles an economic crisis sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of FX windows, United Kingdom-based Diageo joined about 15 other multinational companies that have exited the country in the past three years. Diageo is the latest to announce its departure on Tuesday, June 11 when it said it will sell its 58.02% stake in Guinness Nigeria to Tolaram. Diageo is the latest to announce its departure on Tuesday, June 11 when it said it will sell its 58.02% stake in Guinness Nigeria to Tolaram. Diageo joins others like Kimberly-Clark, manufacturers of Huggies and Kotex brands of diapers; US-based Procter and Gamble (P&G); GlaxoSmithKline (GSK); Unilever and Sanofi-Aventi Nigeria, who are either exiting completely or reducing their exposure in a country facing its worst cost-of-living crisis in decades. Unilever Nigeria announced its exit from the home care and skin cleansing markets in Nigeria in November 2023, saying it did so “to find a more sustainable and profitable business model.” Procter & Gamble was the last to announce its exit from the country the same year. Similar reasons given by these and other companies include high energy costs, currency depreciation, insecurity etc. The Federal Government itself acknowledged these challenges in an interview granted by Minister of Finance, Wale Edun on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, where he said “lack of a liquid foreign exchange market was the major reason why some multinational companies exited Nigeria,” explaining that the inability of the exiting multinationals to access foreign exchange was a major impediment to their operations in the country. Weighing-in, the Director-General of Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, Adewale Oyerinde, disclosed that at least 15 multinationals have either divested or partially closed operations in the country in the last three years. Oyerinde, in his assessment, stated: “Over 15 organisations, with a combined value-chain staff strength of over 20,000 employees, have either divested or partially closed operations,” lamenting that this has “dire consequences not only for organised businesses but also for labour, government revenue and the households; massive job losses across sectors, which would continue to create insecurity challenges”. Oyerinde added, “When NECA examined the exit of prominent companies like GSK, Sanofi, Procter & Gamble, Nampak, and others, who had been doing business in Nigeria for decades and were huge employers of labour, it was worried about the ripple effect on the broader business ecosystem. “Within the value chain, numerous enterprises serve as suppliers to these major corporations, and their sustainability is significantly compromised when the primary businesses they cater to face extinction. “The survival prospects of these secondary businesses are at stake, and their employees are also at risk, as the departure of the main clients could lead to their demise. The crisis within the value chain deserves more attention than it currently receives”. Other sectoral group leaders and analysts maintain that the continuous exit of multinational firms would dampen Nigeria’s $1trn GDP target of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The President had, at the 29th Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja, told business leaders and Nigerians that Nigeria’s economy can grow to $1 trillion by 2026. Analysts believe the persistent exit of multinational companies from the country is set to impact negatively on this target. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that the performance of the GDP in the first quarter of 2024 was driven mainly by the services sector, which recorded a growth of 4.32 per cent and contributed 58.04 per cent to the aggregate GDP, whereas the nominal GDP growth of the manufacturing sector in the first quarter of 2024 was recorded at 8.21 per cent (year-on-year), 9.64 per cent points lower than the figure recorded in the corresponding period of 2023. Real GDP growth in the manufacturing sector in the first quarter of 2024, on its part, was 1.49 per cent (year-on-year), lower than the same quarter of 2023. Reacting to this, President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Otunba Francis Meshioye said, “MAN expects the government to frontally address insecurity, improve electricity supply, promote fiscal sustainability and ensure policy consistency. “Among other priorities, the fiscal authority must also lend supportive measures by adequately incentivising the manufacturing sector and other productive sectors. “This is very important to boost non-oil export earnings in addition to the increase in oil export proceeds occasioned by increased oil production, rising global oil prices and the coming on stream of the Dangote Refinery”. Director-General of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Dr. Chinyere Almona, also speaking on the issue, said: “Over the last few months, there has been a consistent increase in exit plans or a reduction in involvement in the Nigerian market by the multinationals, and this trend is worrisome. “We have seen the likes of Unilever Nigeria, GlaxoSmithKline, and recently now Guinness Nigeria Plc. “In Nigeria, lingering foreign exchange scarcity, poor power supply, port congestion, multiple taxation, insecurity, and poor infrastructure, among others, have taken a toll on many businesses in the country.” The chamber recommended that the government should implement measures to stabilise and ensure the availability of foreign exchange for businesses, particularly those operating in dollar-denominated environments, also imploring the government to create a more flexible and transparent foreign exchange policy to address scarcity issues. “Further, the Chamber urges the government to engage multinational corporations and the business community to understand their challenges and gather input and feedback on policy decisions to collaboratively develop solutions that will forestall the exodus of businesses from Nigeria. The CBN should prioritise the stability of the country’s currency and adopt the right policy mix to ensure price stability,” Almona said. National President of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, ASBON, Femi Egbesola, maintained that multinationals are among the companies that contribute largely to the country’s GDP and earnings. “We cannot be talking of growing our economy when the real investors are leaving. Assuming they are leaving and the indigenous ones are increasing, it would have been a different thing. But that is not the case. You make income as a nation when you have investments and investors,” he said. However, since the coming of the Tinubu administration, Tinubu and Edun, among others, have been speaking on efforts being put in place towards revamping the economy, encouraging Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and also making local industries vibrant and competitive. Whether the assurances of Edun, who, on the Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, said, “recent executive orders signed by President Bola Tinubu have improved the investment climate … and also disclosed that tax reform proposals aimed at simplifying doing business for local and foreign manufacturers are being considered as part of an Economic Stabilisation Package,” would stem the flow of multinationals exiting the country, only time will tell. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/07/economic-crisis-huge-job-losses-as-16-multinationals-exit-nigeria-in-3-years/amp/

A rice farmer identified as Taiwo Paul has been murdered by some suspected herders in the Kata Area of Ewekoro Local Government of Ogun State. PUNCH Metro further gathered that while Paul was allegedly hacked to death by the suspects at his rice plantation in the community, another farmer identified as Peter Danjuma died of electrocution in the Isoyin area of Atan-Ijebu. The state Police Command confirmed the two deaths in separate telephone conversations with PUNCH Metro on Saturday. Our correspondent gathered that 26-year-old Paul was found battling for his life in a pool of blood on Thursday after he was allegedly attacked by the suspects. The spokesperson for the command, Omolola Odutola, told our correspondent that the rice farmer had left his house at Yobo Village to check the crops owing to suspicions of some herders who they suspected had been roaming the area in the past. When Paul did not return home on time, our correspondent learnt that his twin brother, Kehinde, went to the rice farm to look for him. PUNCH Metro learnt that Kehinde heard a faint groan from a distance and discovered his twin brother dying in a pool of his blood, bleeding uncontrollably from severe cuts on his hands and right leg. PUNCH Metro further gathered that all efforts by the deceased’s brother and other villagers to rush Paul to the General Hospital in Ifo failed, as the victim reportedly died on the way. Odutola further stated that a doctor on duty at the hospital confirmed Paul’s death on arrival. She noted that a preliminary investigation had begun to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous crime. She said, “Detectives from Ewekoro Police Division have visited the crime scene and the hospital for assessment, and photographs have been taken. The deceased’s body was later released to the family for burial. “Preliminary investigations are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators, and the case will be transferred to the State Crime Investigation Department at Eleweran for further discreet investigation.” Meanwhile, another farmer in the Isoyin area, identified simply as Danjuma, was electrocuted to death on Friday morning while feeding birds at a poultry farm. Ogun State Waste Management Authority has appealed to residents of the state who are still exposing their waste to start containerising them saying that such healthy habits help to curb the spread of communicable diseases like cholera among others. This appeal, the state government said becomes necessary to tackle the outbreak of Cholera in the state. The government has equally threatened to arrest residents found flouting the order to stop leaving their waste exposed. The Managing Director of OGWAMA, Abayomi Hunye made the appeal while inspecting the ongoing rehabilitation work at the Kurata Dumpsite in Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government area of the state. Hunye, according to a statement, on Sunday, said that containerizing waste by the residents would make refuse collection and disposal easy while also helping to prevent contaminating the environment and of course, prevent the spread of contagious diseases. He said “A situation where some residents expose their waste indiscriminately poses a lot of danger because when it rains these refuse will infect the underground water which when not purified will lead to water-borne infestation that will result in diseases like cholera. "Aside from this, these wastes also find their way to rivers and wetlands which will equally affect all the wells and boreholes in those areas leading to unwanted consequences”. Hunye therefore called on those living in those areas where wastes had been left open to avoid drinking wells, boreholes as well and sachet water as some of them might not be fit for human consumption this time around. He however assured the residents that OGWAMA will continue to perform its duties of proper waste management and urged the people to make the job easier by containerizing their refuse so that PSPs in their areas can pick them up for proper disposal. Hunye said that waste police officers are equally out to arrest those who are adamant about this appeal and directive. “We want our people to heed this appeal in the interest of the general public so that the cholera issue can be contained as quickly as possible as everything is being done by the state government to rid our state of this disease” he concluded. https://punchng.com/cholera-stop-exposing-waste-ogun-warns-residents/?

The Osun State Muslim community has disclosed that both the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government and the 36 states governors lack the political will to stem the tide of hardship across the country. Speaking at a press conference to herald activities to commemorate the 1446 Hijrah at the Muslim Community Secretariat in Osogbo, the group’s President, Sheikh Mustafa Ajisafe said political leaders in the country have not commitment towards addressing the present situation. He said the present situation demands aggressive agricultural revolution across the state, especially in the southwest, where massive agriculture is on the decline. His words, “Our leaders lack the political will to fight the excruciating hunger ravaging the country as a result of economic crisis around the world. Our leaders rather than concentrating on agriculture to reduce hunger, they were busy distributing motorcycles as empowerment. “Instead of President Bola Tinubu to focus on rescuing the economy from inflationary crisis, he is busy with the politics of 2027. He is busy dissipating energy of politics rather than good governance. “The Governors are busy distributing motorcycle, hair dressing, beautician equipment to youths instead of revitilising the various agricultural settlement to concentrate on their areas of comparative advantage with a view to pulling the country out of the woods. “Until we have people whose love for the country and its people supercede that of their personal ambition, then, maybe they will lead the country into prosperity”. On the new Islamic year celebration, he said Muslims are the most tolerant people, stressing the need for continuous religion harmony in the state. He also noted that the one week programme of activities to celebrate the new year continues on Monday through Saturday, including Qur’an competition, entrepreneurship skills acquisition for youth, a public lecture and a grand finale to be chaired by Governor Ademola Adeleke. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/06/tinubu-govs-lack-will-to-fight-hardship-osun-muslim-community/
