Residents of Ikun in Akoko South-West Local Government area of Ondo State have lamented the deplorable condition of roads linking the community to neighbouring towns, saying the situation has crippled economic activities and left commuters stranded.

During a visit to the area, THE HOPE observed that several access roads leading to the town had deteriorated badly, making movement difficult for residents and motorists.

The road linking Ikun to Afo and Idoani was described as being in a very poor condition, while the Ikun–Iwaro road has become completely impassable.

Residents also said the Ikun–Oke Afo–Ipe route has turned into a death trap due to its severe deterioration.

As a result, commercial motorcycle operators have become the only available means of transportation in the community, charging what residents described as exorbitant fares.Urban Transit

A concerned indigene of Ikun, retired Reverend Canon Foluso Ogunsuyi, appealed to the Federal Government to urgently intervene and rehabilitate the roads.

He noted that the poor state of the roads had negatively affected the town’s economy and the livelihoods of residents.

“The roads leading to Ikun are in a terrible condition, and this has made life very difficult for our people.

“Economic activities in the town have drastically declined because vehicles can no longer ply the roads conveniently.

“Our farmers are struggling to transport their produce to markets, while market women are no longer enjoying the level of patronage they used to have.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to urgently come to our aid by fixing these roads,”Ogunsuyi said.
