Nigerians has come into the realization of the importance of taking tea. This practice of tea taking cut across the rich and the poor. The Northerners take the lead in the consumption of tea in Nigeria. They bought this practice into every other state. It is a common site to see “mai chai” (tea seller) on major street in major cities across the country .
The importance of taking tea is that it is rich in polyphenols, it helps regulate the blood, glucose and lower the risk of cancer. The reason why it is patronize by the rich and the poor is because it is cheap and connivences. It will interest you to find out that is industry is worth over N100billon naira and majority of this tea is imported into country. The leading brand in the tea sector is Lipton, Unilever Nigeria Ltd is the makers of this brand, which is a popular tea in many Nigeria homes. International brands are taking increase market share in the tea value chain business . The Interesting thing is that some of these foreigners source their raw materials for tea in Nigeria after processing the final product are imported back into the country .

Hibiscus flower: this is a plant that is generally know as ZOBO. It is planted in the northern part of the country. This is processed into tea and one can decide to brand it with different flavour which is also locally source .
Ginger: 95 per cent of the ginger planted in Nigeria is exported . I believe as an expert in this sector, that we would make more margin if we process and package our ginger and export. Imagine that you have to take hot ginger tea to clear you mild cold or cough, rather than take drugs . So ginger tea can also be process in form of slimming tea and other produce such as lime can be add. This tea has some antioxidant which helps to keep our immune system strong.
Neem tea: this tea is an immune booster, it works to keep away cardiovascular disease and it has power antioxidant against cancer, this can also be exported.
Aloe Vera: this is another product that can be processed into tea and it is very good. It has numerous health benefit.
Moringa tea: Moringa leaves are packed with antioxidants called “flavonoid” which are naturally occurring antioxidant compound . this tea will help in pleasant boost of energy and mental clarity. Women will find this tea helpful with cramps and bloating during menstrual cycles .

There is a fine grain that is called Acha(Hungry Rice) and it is very rich nutritional and it is clearly fully utilized except by the local in the middle belt . Acha is a grain that can be converted into package cereal,it can also be processed into flour that will be serve as Custard. This same product can be processed as baby food . Acha has three variety in Nigeria, we have the white, black and brown. Our concern will be on the white and brown variety.
The importance of this crop
Acha ( fonio) is gluten free, this makes it better than wheat and corn which contains gluten. It also aids digestion by these it is good for babies, children and elderly people. It helps cardiovascular function and it is good for diabetes. It is very for weigh loss.
Processing of the Asha
Depending on which final product you want to get from acha(fonio) the processing of fonio is easy because one only needs to mill, sieve and this is where creativity comes into play. One can decide to give different flavour here depending on what you want. Branding and packaging is the last stage in the production stage.

Take a classical example, if an investor take 21 tons of cocoa at $2400 a ton and export to Europe this will amount to N18,460,000 but put this through the value chain process, 21 tons of cocoa into chocolate you would have made N468,000,000 there are several products that can be made from cocoa they are pharmaceutical products,beverages drinks cocoa butter cocoa husk can be used as animal feed. It will interest you know that price of raw material fluctuate but nobody regulate the price of a finish product .
Most of us think of plantain in terms of plantain chips and maybe plantain flour but you’d never thought of other product that can be process from plantain. Such as biscuits, that’s interesting to know that noodles from plantain is far richer than noodles from wheat. what of different taste from plantain chips, plantain chips coated with coconut chips and chips coated with peanut butter.
I am trying to show here that there is more margin when we add value to whatever we produce. The demand gap of plantain flour is so wide that is an opportunity for an investor to take advantage of. It is cheap to setup this plantain mill. So why don’t you be a processor instead of being only a farmer of plantain.
