Sports / Ighalo Makes Champions League Debut In Manchester United’s Loss To PSG by webboykiss: 11:18am On Dec 03, 2020
The former Nigeria striker made a cameo appearance in his first-ever game in the elite European competition

Odion Ighalo made his debut appearance in the Champions League on Wednesday as Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Shanghai Shenhua loanee was introduced as a 90th-minute substitute for Aaron Wan-Bissaka but his introduction could not save the Red Devils from going down at Old Trafford.

Neymar secured all three points for PSG in stoppage time with his second goal of the night after Marquinhos restored their lead in the second half.

The Brazil star broke the deadlock for the French champions in the sixth minute but Marcus Rashford cancelled out the opener just before half-time. Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side was reduced to 10 men after Fred received a second yellow card in the 70th minute.

Prior to his debut on Wednesday, Ighalo had played the role of an unused substitute in Manchester United’s last four outings in the Champions League this season.

Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye was also introduced as a late substitute for PSG while Ivory Coast centre-back Eric Bailly watched the entire match on the bench.

So far this season, the former Super Eagles striker has played four matches across all competitions for Manchester United, which include nine minutes of football in the Premier League. He played a starring role for the Red Devils in the Europa League earlier this year, following his loan signing from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua.

The 31-year-old scored two goals in five appearances before they were knocked out of the tournament in the semi-finals.

Wednesday’s loss at Old Trafford dropped Manchester United to second in Group H, level on nine points with leaders PSG and third-placed RB Leipzig after five outings.

They need to avoid defeat when they visit Leipzig for their final group match on December 8 in order to advance to the Champions League knockout stage.

Sports / Victor Moses Shows Alex Iwobi How It’s Done by webboykiss: 9:47am On Nov 30, 2020
The former Nigeria international excelled in a wing-back role for Spartak Moscow on Sunday

After an encouraging first performance as a wing-back for Everton against Fulham last weekend, Alex Iwobi was brought crashing down to earth against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Nigeria international has struggled to assert himself within Carlo Ancelotti’s plans this season, but after being reconfigured as a right wing-back against Fulham, he delivered one of his finest performances of the season, completing six dribbles in a showing that barely suggested he was operating in an unfamiliar role.

Against Leeds, however, it was a different story, as the wideman—this time positioned on the left with Tom Davies on the right—looked much less comfortable and struggled to deal with Raphinha and Luke Ayling. If Iwobi is planning to re-invent himself as a wing-back on a longer-term basis, he could do a lot worse than to cast his eyes over to Russia, where Victor Moses is continuing his fine work in similar role. The 29-year-old’s career was going nowhere at Chelsea before Antonio Conte arrived at the club, with the wideman having struggled to impress a series of managers after arriving from Wigan Athletic.

Time on loan away from Stamford Bridge did little to help Moses’s position in West London, until he too was reconfigured into a wing-back by Conte.

Moses, like Iwobi, won over many doubters in the way he adapted seamlessly to a new position and a new role, and he was influential as Chelsea won the Premier League title in the 2016-17 season.

Indeed, it was the finest spell of Moses’s career, as he also reached the FA Cup final in 2017 before winning it 12 months later.

Now on loan at Spartak Moscow, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Blues boss Frank Lampard, Moses is again demonstrating the qualities in a wing-back role that Iwobi would do well to take note of.

Against Rotor Volgograd on Sunday, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner starred in a left wing-back role—again, like Iwobi, having been switched to the opposite flank—and played his part in a 2-0 victory for Domenico Tedesco’s side.

Despite playing in a nominally deeper role, Moses was a key attacking threat—he created one goalscoring opportunity and hit the target with both of his shots—and also completed two successful dribbles as Volgograd struggled to contain him.

“Great performance from the boys and a massive three points today,” the master of reinvention wrote on his Twitter handle after the match, and he’s clearly enjoying life in Russia where—not for the first time in his career—he’s tackling a new challenge head on.

Iwobi, so celebrated early in his career as he came through the ranks at Arsenal, arguably has more natural talent and a higher ‘ceiling’ to his game than Moses did, but he would do well to look to his former international colleague as an example of how to embrace change when things aren’t going your way.

Iwobi had a tough time of things against Leeds, but his performance against Fulham suggests that—for now at least—this experiment is one worth persevering with for Ancelotti.

Sports / Ziyech & Mendy Face Tottenham Hotspur Looking To Validate Chelsea’s Title Claim by webboykiss: 7:49pm On Nov 29, 2020
Ziyech & Mendy Face Tottenham Hotspur Looking To Validate Chelsea’s Title Claim
Having made huge impacts since moving to London, victory for the African pair on Sunday would undoubtedly sound a warning to the rest of the league

Frank Lampard vs Jose Mourinho will dominate the headlines in the hours leading up to Chelsea hosting Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

In a sense, it seems fitting that, on the occasion of the Blues’ 1000th game since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, two prominent figures in making the Blues a worldwide brand are involved in Sunday’s encounter.

In one dugout is the club’s record goalscorer and greatest player, leading out the home team against the man who took his game to a whole new level having arrived in 2004. The Blues’ greatest trainer’s stomping ground these days is in North London, and following defeats by Lampard last year will look to finally get one over his old side at the Bridge in the Premier League. However, that’s only one part of a potentially mouthwatering encounter in West London this weekend. The evolution of both sides in the last few months has suddenly fast-tracked them into contention to claim this season’s Premier League title. While Chelsea’s summer spending made observers aware of the increase in quality of the group, the recent run of wins, aided by being watertight at the back and, recently, fluid in attack has somewhat put Lampard’s side in the conversation.

The injury problems of defending champions Liverpool (the key absences are going to catch up at some point, right?) and Manchester City’s continued struggles for consistency suggest a league winner aside from these two may be crowned in 2020/21.

Indeed, Edouard Mendy and Hakim Ziyech have played colossal roles at both ends of the pitch in Chelsea’s ascent as possible contenders in little time. The Senegal goalkeeper gave a teaser of his quality on his Blues debut — which incidentally came in a League Cup tie at Spurs — and hasn’t looked back since.

On that night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mendy’s shot-stopping and command of his area were apparent as he tended to come out to claim crosses in and around his zone. The West African has been more measured and level-headed between the sticks since the Blues exited the competition on penalties and that assuredness has spread calm across the backline.

Statistics show the ex-Rennes goalkeeper has saved seven from eight shots on target he’s faced in his five league appearances. While there’s an argument that the towering 28-year-old hasn’t been as tested as his predecessor Kepa Arrizabalaga — who interestingly had to deal with 14 shots on target in only three outings — the ‘low maintenance’ Senegalese stopper’s displays, especially against Manchester United and against his old club in midweek, demonstrate his superiority.

Quite simply: While Mendy may not face a high volume of shots, he’s more than adept at preventing them from going in when necessary.

Ziyech, on the other hand, is already exhibiting the undoubted quality that observers witnessed from the ex-Ajax playmaker in the Champions League in recent years.

The maverick has overcome a slow start, largely due to an injury sustained in the club’s only pre-season friendly at Brighton & Hove Albion, to become arguably their most-important signing. He previewed what was to come in the West Londoners’ 4-0 win over Krasnodar, before putting Burnley and Sheffield United to the sword.

Frankly, the latter — a 4-1 thrashing of the Blades at Stamford Bridge — justified the Wizard of Amsterdam tag and, scarily, the fact that showing was just a tip of the iceberg ought to frighten teams Chelsea face down the line.

Undoubtedly, Ziyech’s proclivity to fashion out quality chances was underlined by Tuesday’s cameo in France, where the North African created two big chances in only 15 minutes on the pitch. This accounted for 40 percent of opportunities that fell into the ‘clear-cut chance’ bracket and it sets things up nicely for Sunday’s game vs Tottenham.

Strangely, observers have somewhat undermined the run of wins put together by Lampard’s men, mostly due to the opposition faced in that streak.Be that as it may, corresponding results last season saw Chelsea pick up four points vs Burnley, Sheffield and Newcastle — won 4-2, threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 and lose 1-0 respectively — while a clean sheet at Old Trafford — a ground where they lost 4-0 last term — laid the foundation for the recent streak of wins and clean sheets in the last month.

The general feeling seems to suggest that getting one over a side of the profile and mentality of Spurs, would authenticate having the five-time PL champions in title contention. This comes despite Mourinho and, recently, Serge Aurier stating how the Lilywhites aren’t challengers for English football’s top prize.

“I think it is too early to think about the title,” the right-back stated after the leaders beat Man City 2-0. “We can’t rush anything. A couple of weeks ago, Southampton were top of the table and then it was Leicester City. Now it is us.”

Pretty textbook statement from Aurier, whose nose probably grew longer after that interview, because Spurs are certainly in contention. They look a different side with a stronger mentality and the injuries at Liverpool, struggles of both Manchester sides and doubts over the sustainability of the form of outsiders Leicester mean the Lilywhites could just make history this term.

As for Chelsea, a more pragmatic side to them in the so-called big games this season against United and Sevilla in Europe proves they can contain good teams. Besides, they kept Jurgen Klopp’s side at bay for the majority of the first half in September until Andreas Christensen’s sending off just before the break ultimately led to a 2-0 defeat.

Having found a greater balance in the last month, Mendy and Ziyech will be key in both boxes as Lampard’s troops look to win over doubting Thomases who now await success over a top side as the Blues begin a run of tricky fixtures going into the frenzied Christmas period. How they fare on Sunday and indeed in the next month will show what Chelsea are all about and whether observers should take them seriously or otherwise.

Covid-19: Barcelona Agree Salary Slash Worth €122million With Players And Staff
Barcelona football club have reached an agreement with their playing squad to slash salaries by €122 million (£110m/$146m) over the next three years, the club has announced.

The club has been forced to make cuts to their budget after La Liga authorities imposed a lower salary cap upon the club last week, so the club could offset financial difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the club announced it will still pay out €50 million (£45m/$60m) per season during the three year period on wage packets.

La Liga president Javier Tebas brought in the financial measures to reduce spending by clubs since income streams have reduced due to the ban of supporters from stadiums amid the ongoing pandemic.

After weeks of negotiations with key figures such as Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and coach Ronald Koeman, Barca have now confirmed their new financial road map.

“Today, the parties have reached an agreement in principle that allows an adjustment to salaries for the current season,” the club confirmed Friday, November 27, in a statement.

“[This is] for an amount of €122 million [in] fixed remuneration, which is added to the deferral for three years of variable remuneration from this season [onward], budgeted at an approximate figure of €50 million.

“This principle of agreement is pending ratification in the coming days by the group of players and coaches affected.

“The agreement, if it is ratified, will be a milestone of great importance to redirect the current economic situation.

“That both parties recognise the great effort that has had to be made to reach this principle of agreement, [they should] congratulate themselves for it.”

Barcelona have struggled this season. They have won and lost three games which sees them stuck in 13th position.

Sports / Eto’o Recalls Watching ‘god’ Maradona At 1990 World Cup by webboykiss: 12:45pm On Nov 29, 2020
The Indomitable Lions faced off against an Argentina team led by the recently deceased ex-Napoli star during a World Cup in Italy

Samuel Eto’o remembered the experience of watching Diego Maradona in action for Argentina against Cameroon in a group game at the 1990 Fifa World Cup.

Maradona captained La Albiceleste at the tournament but Cameroon’s Francois Omam-Biyik stood out as the hero at the San Siro Stadium after scoring the only goal that separated the two teams in the 67th minute.

It was an eventful outing for the Indomitable Lions who had two players – Andre Kana-Biyik and Benjamin Massing – sent off in the second half.Eto’o, who was nine years old at that time, recalled how hundreds of people gathered to watch the game in his neighbourhood, and he described the victory as ‘the hope’ which motivated the younger players back home.“We watched it with 2,000 people in our neighbourhood in front of one TV,” Eto’o was quoted by AS.

“When Diego said hello to our captain and then started juggling the ball on his shoulder, I thought we’re going to lose 10-0.

“And when we won that was so important for us, it gave so much hope to the youngsters in our country. Cameroon has beaten Argentina! That gave us hope!”

Cameroon topped Group B while Argentina followed in the second position. The Central African country reached the quarter-finals of the tournament where they were eliminated by England.

Maradona passed away on Wednesday at the age of 60 after suffering from cardiac arrest. In his tribute to the 1986 World Cup winner, Eto’o described the former Barcelona and Napoli star as a god who lives on.

“I told my friend, that has to be a joke and it’s a terrible joke, because Maradona will always be with us,” he said.

“He was the idol for a whole generation, and for future generations, for what he did in football. He was from another planet. Diego, you’re god, you’ll always be alive in our hearts.”

Sports / Disgraced Arsenal Target Emmanuel Dennis Returns In Club Brugge Draw by webboykiss: 12:34pm On Nov 29, 2020
The Nigeria international was punished for misconduct in midweek after storming off the Belgian side’s team bus

Nigeria striker Emmanuel Dennis was handed a reprieve by Club Brugge as he returned to action for the Belgian heavyweights only days after being punished by the club for a petulant outburst that made international headlines.

The 23-year-old was suspended by the Belgian side ahead of their Champions League meeting with Borussia Dortmund in midweek, having stormed off the team bus ahead of the match after not being allowed to sit in his favourite seat.

The attacker’s petulant display was leapt upon by the world media, while Brugge opted to suspend the forward for the Dortmund meeting and fine him for his poor behaviour. The Blue and Black were thumped 3-0 by the German giants in UCL action on Tuesday, and their tricky week got even worse on Saturday when they were held 0-0 at Mouscron in the Jupiler League.Brugge coach Philippe Clement had confirmed ahead of the match that Dennis had been allowed to participate, and after being named on the bench, he was introduced in the 78th minute as the visitors sought a winner against their stubborn foe.

Ultimately, Dennis wasn’t able to provide the breakthrough, with an 87th-minute booking his primary contribution to an underwhelming outing for the reigning Belgian champions.

The draw means Brugge drop from top spot in the Jupiler League, having been displaced in first position by Genk following their 5-1 thumping of Cercle Brugge earlier on Saturday.

David Okereke, Youssouph Badji, Clinton Mata and Odilon Kossounou were all in action for Brugge, while the likes of Jean Onana, Kouakou Koffi and Eddy Gnohere featured for Mouscron during a contest dominated by African talent.

Dennis’s tough week has been the nadir of a testing campaign so far in which he’s failed to find the net in eight Jupiler League outings.

His toil in front of goal have made a mockery of some of the expectations set out for the forward ahead of the campaign, with Dennis linked with European heavyweights such as Arsenal and Internazionale.

A fee of £36 million was mooted for the attacker—who was also tipped for a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers—although ultimately he remained at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Sports / Chelsea Star Is Like Hazard, Blues Legend Declares by webboykiss: 12:38pm On Nov 24, 2020
Chelsea legend Alan Hudson has declared that new signing Timo Werner is “instinctive” like Eden Hazard and should be given freedom by manager Frank Lampard.

The Blues icon told CaughtOffside: “Werner is instinctive and needs to be left to roam, like Hazard, he has no real position and flits through the game sometimes unnoticed and then will pounce.

“I like him a lot and had he taken his chances at the weekend the Golden Boot is there for him, but it still is, he is a thrilling player with a great eye for goal and can also play the other part of assisting, he is a very clever player, not quite a Eden Hazard but who is?”

The German’s versatility has made him a useful asset for the Blues and he has consistently been selected over England international Tammy Abraham.

“If Chelsea are looking to reach not only the top but become a real European force again, Abraham is not the answer, despite scoring goals, because a blind man could score goals in this team because they create so many chances.

“He is a very decent player but to become a force in the Champions League, Chelsea need something better to led the line,” he said.

Everton’s Iwobi Compared To Maicon And Cuadrado After Right-Back Role Against Fulham

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has compared Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi to Brazil’s Maicon and Colombia’s Juan Cuadrado after his impressive performance as a right-back against Fulham.

Iwobi was drafted into a new role at Craven Cottage on Sunday and he produced a solid shift as a full-back for 90 minutes as Carlo Ancelotti’s side bagged a 3-2 away win.

In the encounter, the former Arsenal star completed the most dribbles for Everton (6) with two tackles completed and two interceptions made.

Richards was particularly pleased by Iwobi’s performance in the right-back position and he compared him with Maicon and Cuadrado whom he played with at Manchester City and Fiorentina respectively.

“They played against Fulham, so you know you will get more time and space,” Richards was quoted as saying by Liverpool Echo.

“I think it’s perfect for Iwobi. He can pick up the ball a little deeper and dribble into spaces and not have to worry about where he is going to be.

“I played with (Juan) Cuadrado at Fiorentina, who was an attack-minded right-back and it really did work. I played with Maicon at Man City as well, who had great equity in the box. Iwobi had that today.

“If they were playing against Arsenal or Manchester City, it might have been defensive but it worked well for them today.”

Out-of-favour Everton winger Yannick Bolasie was also impressed by the Nigeria international’s display.

“Got the result…DCL is that guy, is back, Digne levels….but Iwobi needs those plaudits today was different class first half,” Bolasie tweeted.

Arsenal And Leeds United Condemn Abuse Towards Nicolas Pepe And Ezgjan Alioski / Is It Time For Social Media Indentification?
Vile abuse.
Both Arsenal and Leeds United have released statements which ‘condemn’ the ‘vile abuse’ subjected to Nicolas Pepe and Ezgjan Alioski following the 0-0 draw between the clubs at Elland Road.

Pepe was sent off after ‘headbutting’ Alioski in the face after a protracted tussle between the two during a phase of play moments prior. Off the ball, the pair were seen pushing each other, Pepe received the ball and was tackled by the Macedonian. The Ivorian then approached Alioski and was seen to lean his head into the face of the Leeds full-back.

Anthony Taylor missed the action but after consultation with the VAR monitor, Taylor brandished Pepe a straight red. Although the Gunners didn’t lose the game, their attacking elements were hindered by the lack of numbers in the final third despite having their best chances after Pepe left the field of play.

The statement on the Arsenal website read:

‘We utterly condemn the vile abuse directed at Nicolas Pepe and Ezgjan Alioski on social media following our match against Leeds United.

This is completely unacceptable and we will be working with the police and authorities to do everything we can to trace and prosecute the culprits.’

Time for change
For too long, individuals have been able to use social media anonymously to throw vile abuse towards any individual of their choosing. Twitter is one of the most popular forms of social media in the world and specifically its synergy with the world of sport leads to these incidents occurring.

Twitter requires a user to sign up with an email address in its current state. But with there being no formal identification or verification process on the app, individuals can create fake, anonymous and parody accounts without a problem.

This makes it very difficult to identify those who have sent abuse in the way of public figures in the case of Alioski and Pepe.

This again leaves many asking for social media to begin requiring verification of identity before being able to sign up for its use. This would mean the use of passports, driving licences etc to be verified before accounts can be used with a legitimate phone number attached.

The counter argument is that the information regarding identity could be stolen but that would be on the platform to securely verify identity. The level of abuse which is seen every day is already, and has been for a significant period, too much for action not to happen.

Sports / Pogba Warned Over Manchester United Comments by webboykiss: 1:23pm On Nov 17, 2020
Frank Leboeuf has warned his compatriot Paul Pogba his recent comments will not have been “well interpreted” by the Manchester United hierarchy.

Pogba admitted he is going through the most “difficult period” of his career during a frank interview with RTL on Sunday.

He added: “The France team is a breath of fresh air, the group is exceptional, it’s magic. It’s not that in the club we don’t have fun, but here it’s not the same. We laugh. It’s really a family.”

Pogba has started France’s last two matches after being dropped for United’s last two games following his poor display in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.

There is no doubt Pogba is yet to find his best form for the Red Devils this season, but Leboeuf urged him to be careful with his choice of words for the good of his relationship with the club.

When asked about the 27-year-old’s comments on his “difficult period” at Old Trafford, Leboeuf told ESPN : “You have to be always cautious of what you say.

“It’s true that this is not going to be very well interpreted with Manchester United.

“It’s meaning that he is belonging to a group with friends which is not the case with Manchester United.”

Solskjaer has preferred a midfield pivot of Fred and Scott McTominay to Pogba in recent fixtures and the pairing helped the United boss clinch a 3-1 win at Everton last time out.

Pogba has also featured on the left of a midfield diamond, which worked to great effect in the 5-0 win over Leipzig but fell flat in the defeat to Arsenal.

The former Juventus man conceded a costly penalty for a clumsy foul on Hector Bellerin as the Gunners came away from Old Trafford with a first victory in 14 years.

Premier League bosses have announced 16 new positive cases – which is a new record weekly high.

They confirmed that 1,207 players and staff were tested between Monday, November 9 and Sunday, November 15, and that resulted in the sudden rise.

The previous weekly high figure was 10 and this will set alarm bells ringing especially as the number of tests were down because players were away on international duty and were tested by their national associations.

It will set alarm bells ringing among Premier League clubs that as soon as players are released for international duty then it results in a rush of positive tests.

That is far greater than at any time during Project Restart and will raise a moral debate if the numbers continue to rise.

On Monday night, the Egyptian FA confirmed Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny had tested positive for coronavirus and would have to self-isolate.

The 28-year-old’s agent Alan Nazmy also took to Twitter to write: “Elneny Positive Cov19 get well soon.”

Is the weekly-high 16 cases recorded major concern for the Premier League? Have your say here.

Sports / Chelsea Star Desperate For Barcelona Move by webboykiss: 9:04pm On Nov 16, 2020
Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger is desperate to leave Chelsea and seal a move to La Liga giants Barcelona, according to reports.

The 27-year-old wants his future sorted as early as in the January transfer window as he has struggled to break into Frank Lampard’s team especially after the arrival of Brazilian defender Thiago Silva on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Rudiger’s time at Stamford Bridge looks to be over as he has failed to play a single minute in the Premier League this season as Kurt Zouma is the preferred center-back partner for Silva.

Spanish outlet Sport claims that not only is Rudiger interested in a move to the Nou Camp, Barcelona are also open to signing the Germany international after failing to land their number one target Eric Garcia from Manchester City.

Chelsea are willing to cash in on Rudiger but if the deal don’t workout, Barcelona may switch attention to fellow national teammate and Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi.

Nairaland / General / Syria’s Veteran Foreign Minister Walid Moalem Dies – State TV by webboykiss: 8:17am On Nov 16, 2020
Syria’s top diplomat and long-time foreign minister Walid al-Moalem, a staunch defender of Syrian President Bashar al Assad’s bloody crackdown on peaceful protesters that sparked a decade old conflict, died on Monday, the government said.

There were no details on the cause of death, but the 79-year old had for years been in poor health with heart problems.

Moalem, who was first appointed foreign minister in 2006 and also held the post of deputy prime minister, held a succession of top diplomatic posts, including envoy to the United States and was involved in unsuccessful negotiations with Israel in the 1990’s on a peace settlement.

“He was known for his honourable patriotic positions,” the government said in a statement, adding he died at dawn and would be buried later on Monday in Damascus.

The veteran diplomat saw his country’s tilt further towards Iran and Russia, which have helped shore up Assad’s rule and allowed the authoritarian leader to regain most of the territory he once lost to insurgents.

Moalem publicly defended Moscow and Shi’ite Iran’s growing military role, backed by its proxies in Syria, which many Syrian opponents of Assad labelled as an occupation and blamed for fuelling sectarian tension in a majority Sunni country.

“I am ready to be one of Hassan Nasrallahʹs soldiers,” Moalem said in August 2006, referring to the leader of the Iranian-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah, which has in recent years sent thousands of its members to fight alongside Assad’s forces.

Syria erupted into civil war nearly a decade ago after Assad in 2011 began a crackdown on protesters calling for an end to his family’s rule.

Moalem accused the United States and others in the West of fuelling his country’s unrest and labelled insurgents “terrorists” in a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands and led to the exodus of millions of refugees.

The veteran diplomat’s last statements attacked the Caesar Act – the toughest U.S. sanctions yet against Damascus which came into force last June, saying they were meant to starve Syrians. He vowed that his country would get economic help from Iran and Russia to soften its blow.

Washington says the goal of the new sanctions is to hold Damascus to account for war crimes and deter it from further pursuing the war. The sanctions exempt humanitarian aid.

Education / Education Is Not A Priority To FG – ASUU Reveals Why Strike Lingers by webboykiss: 1:09pm On Nov 10, 2020
The federal government has been accused of not making education a priority that is why it has refused to address issues raised by striking workers.

The National Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi made this known on Monday during a Channels Television interview.

He explained that the federal government was always focusing on the salary aspect of their demands, forgetting the protracted issues of funding, autonomy, and conducive environments for learning and working.

“Do we still have public primary schools? Do we still have public secondary schools? Let us acknowledge what ASUU has brought to the system.

“But for ASUU, public universities would have collapsed totally. The government does take education as a priority.

“We have schools without seats, we have laboratories without equipment and some use kerosene stoves as Bunsen burners.

“We need our universities to grow this country; we need our universities to innovate and develop this country.

“So funding the university system is not a waste, but an investment,” Ogunyemi said.

Asked about the fate of students who have been home for over eight months due to the strike action, Ogunyemi said,

“Each time people talk about this problem (strikes) as being there for long, they don’t also appreciate the solutions we have brought to the system.

“We have kept the system going. But for ASUU interventions, we would no longer have public universities today.

“Parents and students should understand that we want to bring the universities to the level where they would be proud of their certificates.”

Crime / Nurse Arrested For Killing Eight Babies (photo) by webboykiss: 12:57pm On Nov 10, 2020
A nurse has been arrested by the police over allegations that she killed eight babies.

Dailymail reported that she was alleged to be trying to kill another nine at a neonatal unit before her arrest.

The woman, arrested on Tuesday, is understood to be nurse Lucy Letby, who was previously arrested in 2018 and 2019 over the tragedies at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hughes, of Cheshire Police, said: ‘In July 2018, a healthcare professional was arrested on suspicion of murder in relation to the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six babies at the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital. She was subsequently bailed pending further inquiries.

‘In June 2019, the healthcare professional was re-arrested on suspicion of murder in relation to the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six babies. She was also arrested in connection with the attempted murder of three additional babies.

‘Today, as part of our ongoing inquiries, the healthcare professional has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder in relation to the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of nine babies.

‘The woman is currently in custody helping officers with their inquiries.

Detectives launched an investigation into infant deaths at the hospital in May 2017, initially looking at the deaths of 15 babies between June 2015 and June 2016.

The probe later widened to the deaths of 17 babies and 16 non-fatal collapses between March 2015 and July 2016.

Following her previous arrests, Letby’s home in the Blacon area of Chester was searched by police.

In a 2013 interview with the Chester and District Standard newspaper, the nurse, originally from Hereford, said she cared for babies requiring various levels of support.

She had worked at the unit as a student nurse during three years of training before qualifying as a children’s nurse at the University of Chester in 2011.

Letby said she started working at the unit after graduating.

DCI Hughes added: ‘Parents of all the babies have been kept fully updated on this latest development and they are continuing to be supported throughout the process by specially trained officers.

‘This is an extremely difficult time for all the families and it is important to remember that, at the heart of this, there are a number of bereaved families seeking answers as to what happened to their children.

‘Due to the nature of this investigation it is extremely challenging but it is important to remember that, despite the passage of time, it is very much active and ongoing. There are no set timescales and we remain committed to carrying out a thorough investigation.

‘We fully appreciate that it continues to have a big impact on all those involved – including the families of the babies, staff and patients at the hospital as well as members of the public.’

Anyone with information should contact the investigation team at at operation.hummingbird@cheshire.pnn.police.uk or call police on 101 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.

Governor Ikpeazu Reacts After ABSU Imposed N15,000 ‘Pandemic Prevention Fee’ On Students
The management of Abia State University has been ordered to cancel the controversial N15,000 pandemic prevention fee imposed on students.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State gave the directive during a Town Hall meeting with students and management of the school on Thursday November 5.

He added that his government will pay N30,000 to each Abia student in the institution as further support to them, their parents and guardians.

Ikpeazu said:

“Yesterday, I had a Town Hall meeting with students and management of Abia State University where a fee of N25,000 per student was proposed as a medical fee but slashed to N15,000 to help ABSU put in place adequate measures to protect the soon to resume students from COVID-19 pandemic.

“In that same meeting, I approved immediate bursary payment to students of Abia origin in ABSU, to alleviate impact of COVID-19 on them & enable them meet the medical fee obligations with ease.

“However, after a deep review of the agreement & its likely effect on all the students & their parents, I’ve directed the immediate scrapping of the “pandemic prevention fee” by school management.

”Let me also add that we are proud of the progress made by the institution in the past 5 years and will continue to support them.“
