Sports / Juventus Won’t Revive Move For Dzeko Despite Tension With Roma After Coppa Itali by webboykiss: 10:04pm On Jan 23, 2021
Paulo Fonseca’s side, who look close to finalising two incoming transfers, have been in the news for all the wrong reasons this week

Juventus are not in talks to sign Edin Dzeko from Roma, Goal understands, despite rising tensions between the striker and his club.

The capital club have had a humbling week. On Friday, Roma were handed an automatic 3-0 defeat after making an illegal substitution in Tuesday’s Coppa Italia last-16 match at home to Spezia – which they had lost 4-2 anyway.

Team manager Gianluca Gombar was sacked by Roma after the debacle. Corriere dello Sport reported that Dzeko and some team-mates had decided not to train in protest at his removal, with a three-hour meeting required to bring the players back round.

However, while training did eventually go ahead, Dzeko has not been included in the matchday squad to face Spezia again in Serie A on Saturday.

The Bosnian was close to joining Juventus over the summer but, while he may still leave Roma, Andrea Pirlo’s side won’t be making another move.

Juventus had a €16 million (£15m/$19m) deal agreed to sign Dzeko last year. However, complications in Roma’s attempt to sign Arkadiusz Milik from Napoli as a replacement meant that the deal never went through.

After flirting with Luis Suarez, Juve eventually signed Alvaro Morata instead, while Milik has this week left Napoli to join Marseille.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Morata, Juve are reasonably well stocked in attack but are still keen to add a fourth striking option to their squad – but their pursuit of Dzeko is a thing of the past.

Roma, meanwhile, are set to add to their own attacking options with the return of Stephan El Shaarawy, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The 28-year-old winger, who played more than 130 times for Roma between 2016 and 2019, is seemingly set to return on an initial loan deal from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua. He has reportedly already travelled to Italy to undertake a medical and complete paperwork.

El Shaarawy came through the youth academy at Genoa before moving to AC Milan in 2011. He made his name at Milan before loan spells with Monaco and Roma, eventually moving to Roma on a permanent deal before leaving for Shanghai in 2019.

Roma are also close to completing the signing of 19-year-old defender Bryan Reynolds from FC Dallas, who had previously seemed set to join Juventus.

Sports / Serie A Preview: Inter, Juve Set To Rumble At San Siro by webboykiss: 5:06pm On Jan 15, 2021
With the Serie A now heading towards the half-way mark, those contending for the league title are wary to drop any points, especially against their closest rivals.

This scenario gives room for great expectations that a blockbusting clash is on the cards when Inter Milan play hosts to Juventus at San Siro in the star fixture for the week in the Italian top flight.

Having lost the title just by a point last season, one would expect Antonio Conte’s men to come all out on Sunday against Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates.

Inter and Juventus were far from convincing in their midweek domestic cup action with both Italian Cup last-16 games going into extra-time on Wednesday.

That nonetheless, a different ball game is expected on Sunday especially as these two teams are still chasing table toppers, AC Milan.

It would also be nice to see how the league top scorers will fare against themselves.

Ronaldo has 15 goals, with Inter’s Lukaku trailing close at 12.

Meanwhile, Conte brushed aside concerns ahead of a match that could determine his side’s chances of a first Serie A title since 2010.

“Every victory provides you with pure energy, wins recharge the batteries,” Conte said according to Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa).

“We’ve got time to recover ahead of Sunday’s match, which is an important test to ascertain the level we’re at and see the extent to which we’ve reduced the gap compared to last season. We’ll prepare for it in the right way.”

Inter’s focus is now on domestic trophies and for them to stand a chance, they would have to halt the dominance of the Old Lady over them.

Since September 2016, Inter has not beaten Juventus – with a run of five defeats and two draws. Will that end this Sunday?

Obviously, the Serie A this weekend is not just about Inter and Juve, as Friday’s Rome derby will kick off another thrilling weekend, with third-placed Roma looking to get back to winning in the Lazio visit after last weekend’s 2-2 draw to Inter.

Atalanta and Napoli, two points behind Juventus, in the European places, will host Genoa and Fiorentina, respectively.

Elsewhere, Simmy Nwankwo’s Corotone will be hosting Benevento while Bologna have a home game against Verona.

Sports / ‘lukaku Is Like Shaquille O’neal And More’ by webboykiss: 9:06pm On Jan 11, 2021
Romelu Lukaku’s teammate at Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella has compared the Belgian to Basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal.

The Italian international is however in awe of Lukaku’s talent and tagged him ‘a force of nature.’

Barella talked about the former Manchester United forward’s physical strength as he praised him, who has contributed 50 goals and nine assists in 72 games since his move from Manchester United.

“Lukaku and Shaquille O’Neal make physical power their greatest strength,” Barella told DAZN.

“But Romelu is also so much more. Even in training, we need two or three players to stop him. He’s a force of nature.”

Lukaku has scored 12 goals in 16 Serie A games this term and has helped the Nerazzurri to second after 17 League games.

Sports / Liverpool To Confirm Bajcetic And Scanlon Captures In Teenage Double Swoop by webboykiss: 10:16pm On Jan 01, 2021
The Reds have beaten out Manchester United for the capture of the former from Spanish club Celta Vigo, while also adding the Birmingham City youngster

Liverpool are set to complete the capture of teenage defenders Stefan Bajcetic and Calum Scanlon.

The Reds have beaten Manchester United for the signing of Bajcetic from Spanish club Celta Vigo, while they have plucked Scanlon from Championship outfit Birmingham City.

Both deals are expected to be officially confirmed by the Reds in the new year.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will welcome both players into their Under-18 setup on Merseyside as the Premier League champions continue to seek to nurture leading talent of the future among their ranks.

The signing of Bajcetic – thought to have cost in the region of £224,000 – has not only seen Liverpool beat out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils but also impending Brexit regulations.

Clubs in the United Kingdom will be unable to sign players under the age of 18 from European Union nations owing to freedom of movement restrictions from 2021 onwards.

Bajcetic is the son of Srdan Bajcetic, who played for Red Star and Celta Vigo among other sides in a career that spanned from the early 1990s to 2004.

Scanlon – who previously confirmed on Instagram that he was set to make the switch to Anfield – meanwhile arrives from St Andrew’s for a fee in the region of £400,000.

Both Bajcetic’s signature and that of 15-year-old Scanlon is particularly notable given Liverpool’s more traditional reluctance to invest in academy-level players outside of their own club hierarchy in comparison to their rivals.

Bajcetic and Scanlon are expected to report for duty with the U18 side at Kirkby under Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, with a view to moving up towards the U23s under Barry Lewtas.

Liverpool’s senior side, meanwhile, face a New Year’s breather following Wednesday’s goalless draw with Newcastle, returning to action on Monday against high-flying Southampton.

The Reds have dropped points two games on the trot now, drawing against both West Brom and the Magpies, which has spoiled their attempts to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League.

Klopp’s side currently have a three-point advantage over second-place Manchester United, who could draw level on points should they defeat Aston Villa on Friday.

Sports / ‘man Utd Sitting Second Is No Accident’ – Solskjaer’s ‘fantastic’ Job Saluted By by webboykiss: 10:24am On Jan 01, 2021
The former Red Devils goalkeeper sees positive steps being taken in the right direction at Old Trafford, with a title challenge on the cards

Manchester United’s rise to second place in the Premier League table is “no accident”, says Tomasz Kuszczak, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considered to be doing “something fantastic” at Old Trafford.

A Norwegian tactician filling the most demanding of posts has not always enjoyed such lavish praise.

Questions have been asked of his ability to deliver on expectations throughout an eventful spell that has delivered a number of highs and lows.

United are very much back on an upward curve at present, having moved to within three points of the Premier League summit while boasting a game in hand on Liverpool, and optimism is building again in Manchester.

Much of that had been eroded in the wake of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with the Red Devils regressing horribly, but patience is now being rewarded.

A title challenge appears to be on the cards, with Kuszczak impressed by what he has seen from a rejuvenated United.

The former Red Devils goalkeeper, who formed part of three title-winning squads in his playing days, told Stadium Astro: “In football we have waves where you dominate the league and European football – United had that.

“Sir Alex Ferguson did what he did for 26 years. He built the team and had big titles. After he left, we saw what happens – quick buy, quick sell, big decisions.

“The fans wanted to see United on top but it doesn’t always happen like that. Everyone could see a period of transition was needed and now something new is there.

“I can feel the trust that Ole has from the owners and supporters. It’s building up and he deserves that.

“He came in during a difficult moment and there were doubts about his name across experts – was he experienced enough?

“He is starting to do something fantastic. They are second, let’s build on that. It may change quickly but it’s no accident. There must be something in it.”

Kuszczak added: “If you look across the season it has been a bit up and down. It’s nice to be on top. You have to start to build on something.

“They can think ‘we are there’. They are second now, so hold on to that. Every game have the same mentality and see what happens. That is the right mentality for the team, to be humble and want to win trophies.”

While talking up United’s impressive form in 2020-21, as they rediscover how to grind results out, Kuszczak believes there is still room for improvement from Solskjaer’s side.

He said: “The strength of Manchester United in the past was not only scoring goals, it was defending as well. The great results and end of season trophies come from not just scoring goals.

“I think they have improved as a team. But against Leicester they had the lead twice and lost goals. Games like that happen all the time.

“If you want to achieve something in the Premier League and win trophies, you have to learn how to play and win games like that. If you look at records in the past and teams winning trophies, they have been fantastic at that – home and away.”

Sports / Lookman And Zambo Anguissa’s Impressive Stats As Fulham Hold Southampton by webboykiss: 10:39pm On Dec 27, 2020
The African stars put in commanding displays as the Cottagers registered their fourth straight draw in the Premier League

Anglo-Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman and Cameroon midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa were in fine form as Fulham secured a goalless draw at home against Southampton on Boxing Day.

Lookman was a dominant force in the Cottagers’ attack and he was involved in half of the 10 shots they registered at Craven Cottage.

The former Everton striker had two attempts at goal and he also created three more opportunities for his teammates but they could not find the back of the net.

He has returned two goals and two assists in 12 Premier League appearances since he returned to England on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig in September.

Zambo Anguissa was another African star who was outstanding in London, making both defensive and attacking contributions in the middle of the park.

The Indomitable Lions midfielder won the most tackles at Craven Cottage (10), completed the most dribbles (six) and he also had the joint-highest shots on target with Lookman (two).

The 25-year-old is currently ranked as the second-best tackler in the league this campaign with 47 completed tackles, four behind Southampton’s Oriol Romeu.

Saturday’s result meant back-to-back draws for Fulham at home and their fourth straight draw in the Premier League.

Zambo Anguissa was in action for the entire duration alongside Nigeria’s Ola Aina and Tosin Adarabioyo, while Lookman was replaced on the stroke of full-time by DR Congo’s Neeskens Kebano.

Southampton, on the other hand, had Mali’s Moussa Djenepo in action but Ghana’s Mohammed Salisu was an unused substitute as he continues to wait for his debut appearance since his summer signing from Real Valladolid.

Fulham remain 18th in the Premier League table with 11 points from 15 games while Southampton dropped to eighth with 25 points.

Next up for Scott Parker’s side is a trip to Tottenham Hotspur on December 30 and they will be targeting their first Premier League win since they defeated Leicester City 2-1 a month ago.

Sports / Klopp: Milner Is Liverpool’s Number One Penalty Taker by webboykiss: 10:31pm On Dec 27, 2020
The Reds boss has thrown his support behind the veteran, revealing he decides who takes spot-kicks when on the pitch

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed James Milner is the club’s number one penalty taker with Mohamed Salah the back-up option.

Milner, 34, has scored 19 times from the spot for the Reds and has only failed to convert on two occasions for the club with his last miss dating back to November 2017.

The veteran midfielder most recently struck from the spot for Liverpool on Boxing Day last year in a 4-0 win over Leicester City with Salah stepping up to the spot for Klopp’s side in recent times.

Though not too fussed on who takes on the responsibility, Klopp has made it clear that he sees Milner as the club’s go-to man when they are handed a penalty.

“James Milner is No.1 penalty taker, but when James is not playing then it’s Mo. When Millie is on the pitch then he can decide,” Klopp said on Saturday.

“How it is always, sometimes you don’t feel 1,000 per cent or you think, ‘He’s scored two already’ and this kind of stuff. That didn’t change, we didn’t speak about it for a long, long time.

“Most the time, probably Millie was not on the pitch but I think I remember at least once when Millie was on the pitch and gave it to Mo.

“For me, it is only important that the ball is in the back of the net after whichever player from my team shot the ball.

“Millie gave us a pretty impressive number of penalties he finished off and Mo as well. So, that’s for me both fine and that’s how it is in the moment, that’s how the decision is.”

Liverpool and Everton are currently the only two Premier League clubs that are allowed to have a limited number of fans in their stadiums as the coronavirus pandemic rages on in England.

While Klopp is thankful to have some support at Anfield, he feels it’s not a massive advantage ahead of Sunday’s home game against West Brom.

“As a club, we have nothing to do with it. It’s not that we have any hand in the decision. It says something nice about the Liverpool people, probably. We had early mass testing four or five weeks ago, maybe longer than that. I am not a specialist, so I don’t know exactly how influential that was,” Klopp said.

“How I said, I wish everybody could experience it. I don’t see it as a massive advantage, but it’s just nicer. I understand that everybody else wants to have in the best possible way and if we have 2,000 and nobody else has 100 or whatever then, yes, I can imagine people will talk about that.

“From my point of view, long may it continue that we can keep people in the stadium but with the new tier system, it doesn’t look very likely. There are still bigger problems out there and as long as the deciders allow us to bring people in, I think that’s a really good sign.”

Sports / Osimhen Injury: Napoli Provide Update On Super Eagles Striker by webboykiss: 8:17pm On Dec 23, 2020
The 21-year-old is yet to recover from a dislocated shoulder he suffered while on international duty with Nigeria in November

Napoli are expecting Victor Osimhen to return to action in January 2021 as he continues his rehabilitation process, according to the club’s sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli.

Osimhen dislocated his shoulder last month while in action for Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Sierra Leone, which consequently made him miss their last nine matches across all competitions.

Since his big money from Ligue 1 club Lille to Napoli in August, the Nigeria international has made eight appearances for Gennaro Gattuso’s side and he has two goals to his name in Serie A.

Napoli have suffered back-to-back defeats in their last two league outings and they will still be without their summer-signing for the final match of the year, against Torino on Wednesday.

The Italian league will go on its winter break after Wednesday’s fixtures until January 3 and Osimhen might return to Gattuso’s team before their trip to Cagliari next Sunday.

When asked about the condition of the Nigerian forward, Giuntoli told Sky Italia via SOS Fanta; “Osimhen is still not well, we are waiting for him at the beginning of 2021.

“At what point of the month is he back? We are waiting for him at the beginning of January, I don’t know when he will come back, we will see in what conditions it will be and we will evaluate.”

In Osimhen’s absence, Napoli have won just four of their nine matches in all competitions, and they are ranked fifth on the Serie A table with 23 points from 13 matches.

Earlier this month, the former Wolfsburg and Sporting Charleroi striker dismissed reports that Nigerian doctors worsened his injury before he left the West African country for treatment at his club base in Naples.

Sports / Mane Pays Tribute To Liverpool Fan With Parting Celebration In Crystal Palace Ro by webboykiss: 3:10pm On Dec 21, 2020
The Reds ran riot on Saturday and their Senegalese attacker remembered an exchange he had with a supporter as he left the field

Sadio Mane paid tribute to Liverpool fan Lee Swan during the Reds’ 7-0 demolition of Crystal Palace as he copied yet another celebration.

The Reds opened up daylight between themselves and the chasing pack in the Premier League with a performance full-back Andy Robertson described as close to perfection.

Mane was a key performer at Selhurst Park, netting the second goal on 35 minutes. He was substituted with over half an hour remaining, and looked visibly upset with manager Jurgen Klopp’s decision to replace him, but as he left the field he fulfilled a promise to Swan.

On a video call last month with Food Bank volunteer Swan, Mane asked if the Liverpool fan had a celebration for him to copy

On the call, Mane said: “You know me, I like to copy celebrations. If you have any celebrations, show me now.” Swan was then seen showing Mane a celebration in which he kissed his finger before pointing to the sky.
Mane arranged for Swan, a volunteer at the Florence Institute – a community centre in the city – to take a tour of Anfield.

During the tour, Swan went on to the pitch at a floodlit Anfield and scored a goal, after which he performed his celebration.

“I’m proud to be part of Dear Liverpool FC and to be part of making a difference during these challenging times,” Mane told the club’s official website. “And it is an honour to help recognise the work that Lee, Timo (community centre leader) and the Florrie have been doing.

“Giving Lee the tour was a highlight of lockdown. He is a real character and it was a pleasure to help him realise his dream of scoring at Anfield.”

And when Mane left the field at Selhurst Park on Saturday, the Senegal international kissed his finger and pointed to the sky.

Mane and Liverpool will now look to kick on over the festive period.

They hold a five-point lead over Everton, with Tottenham a further point adrift, and take momentum into their games with West Brom and Newcastle before the year is out.

The Reds welcome in 2021 with a trip to Southampton, before a brief break from league action in order to face Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Sports / Pogba Stands Tall As Solskjaer & Man Utd Turn Crucial Corner by webboykiss: 12:27pm On Dec 20, 2020
The Frenchman’s name had been in the headlines after his agent’s ill-judged transfer talk but he performed well against Sheffield United

The last few weeks have been difficult for Paul Pogba. Pilloried yet again by the club’s supporters in the wake of agent Mino Raiola’s ill-timed comments about a potential transfer away from Old Trafford on the eve of a crucial Champions League game against RB Leipzig, it was time to let his football do the talking.

“I’ve always fought and will always fight for Manchester United,” Pogba pledged on his Instagram account last weekend. And, no matter where his future lies, he showed with a polished display in the 3-2 win against Sheffield United in the Premier League that those were not just hollow words.

The vast majority of people have never doubted Pogba’s ability; it has been his consistency which has let him down. But, as the midfielder said himself, they are “stronger together”. That sentiment rang true as he inspired United to a come-from-behind victory – their 10th consecutive win in the league away from home.

He strolled around the Bramall Lane turf in cruise control picking out passes and, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had requested, dictating the play. He was the tower the team needed in the middle. He had that swagger in his step when he makes everything he does look simple.

His remarkable pass for Anthony Martial’s goal was described by some commentators as lucky, questioning whether he even meant it. The quick glance before he played it suggested otherwise.

The World Cup winner knew exactly what he wanted to do and how to deliver it. And that’s what he does so well – he can execute his vision with inch-perfect precision and control.

“We know his strength in the air, we knew he would be important on set-plays and I think he won more or less every header,” Solskjaer said of Pogba’s performance. “His vision and creativity we also want and he’s responded really well to the work he’s been doing. He is fit now – excellent performance.”

Pogba has world-class talent but, for Man United, there have only been flashes of perfection and brilliance. If he adds that consistency there will be no stopping him.

Just look at the way he started the move for United’s third last night. The turf was his dance floor as he pirouetted past two players before releasing Bruno Fernandes to drive United’s counter-attack.

If he were to produce those match-winning pieces of skill every week, there would be more clamour from the fan base to keep the midfielder at the club beyond the end of his current contract.

In the future, be that next summer or the one after, they will have to look elsewhere for those moments of individual brilliance. Luckily, for Solskjaer, it wasn’t just Pogba chipping in with moments of perfection. Step forward, Marcus Rashford.

The England international’s finishing has been called into question on a number of occasions but his first touch and strike for United’s equaliser was up there with the quality and technique shown by the world’s best. The composed and clinical nature of his strike was a reminder of what he has in his locker as the team continue to fire blanks at Old Trafford.

The fact Martial is now finally off the mark in the league also pleased Solskjaer, heading into a busy fortnight. He has said he would know by the new year whether or not his team had what it takes to mount a title charge and this was a step in the right direction.

There can’t have been many people who would have thought Solskjaer would be legitimately fielding questions about a potential title race after losing three of their first four home league games this season – but that is the unique nature of this campaign.

The win against Sheffield United showed that they could do what they failed to do so many times last season and capitalise when those around them had dropped points.

Now they have seven more points than they did after 12 games last season and find themselves five points off league leaders Liverpool with a game in hand. There’s a long way to go and, if this team are serious about mounting any kind of challenge, they’re going to have to eradicate big mistakes from their game.

This time it was Dean Henderson, making just his second league start for the club against his former employers, who gifted the hosts the lead within four minutes. David McGoldrick’s finish meant that since the start of last season, only Newcastle (15) have made more errors leading to goals than United in the Premier League (10).

Solskjaer joked again that his team never like to do things the easy way.

“It’s just from when I was playing, we never seem to make it easy for ourselves,” he said. “Every game now is a cup final and it’s going to be relentless with game after game.”

But for now, it’s another three points in the bag and one step closer to that new year milestone when Solskjaer said he could really tell if his team were title contenders.

Sports / Arteta Open To January Arsenal Return For Ozil by webboykiss: 11:29am On Dec 14, 2020
The Spaniard has suggested that the former Real Madrid player may have role to play for the Gunners yet

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has opened the door for Mesut Ozil to return to the squad in January.

The former Germany international playmaker has been frozen out of the Spaniard’s plans since March and is not involved in either of the Gunners’ squads for the Premier League or the Europa League. In the meantime, he has been involved in a battle with the club on social media, undermining them by offering to pay the wages of mascot Gunnersaurus, who was sacked by the club earlier this year as they made cutbacks due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Ozil’s deal is up at the end of the season and his Arsenal career seemed over – but there may be another twist to come in the tale.

“He’s not in the squad right now,” Arteta told the press on Saturday ahead of a Premier League meeting with Burnley on Sunday. “I’m focusing just on the players we have here.

“But, whatever happens in January, we have some time to decide.”

Former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger recently spoke out in defence of the former Real Madrid ace, claiming he is not a difficult character to manage.

“He was not difficult to manage. He was a guy who had a special quality as a creative player and needed to have fun,” the legendary former Arsenal boss told ESPN.

“He is an artist and these guys are a bit more sensitive.

“They need support and an environment that pushes them to give their best.”

Wenger offered Arteta some advice to get the best out of Ozil.

“You have two ways to see a football team. You get everybody to do the same. The same intensity of work, the same defensive work or you find a compromise,” he added.

“You have a more creative player in the team who can do less defensive work but you build a team around him who can compensate for these deficiencies.

“That is what you have to think about.”

Celebrities / How I Became Mr Macaroni’s ‘mummy Wa’ – Nigerian Skit-maker, Kemi Ikuseedun Open by webboykiss: 5:06pm On Dec 13, 2020
Kemi Ikuseedun, the Nigerian actress and skit maker, has two public personas.

One is as ‘Mummy wa’, the fictional wife to a popular social media character, Mr Macaroni, played by Debo Adebayo. The other persona is ‘Kemz mama’ which she also plays out on social media.

Recalling how she started acting with Mr Macaroni, she told Sunday Scoop, “Initially, I acted as one of the girls (freaky freaky) in the skits. But, there was a day I was doing my thing as Kemz Mama in the ‘Mummy wa’ outfit and he (Adebayo) saw me and asked me to try out the role of his wife. I was very surprised when he called me for the shoot. He said he wanted that particular costume and character. And, the rest, as they say, is history.”

Ikusedun also noted that she often got naughty requests from male fans.

She said, “When I started, I did not get naughty requests because a lot of people didn’t know I was the one playing those roles. They just could not place it. However, I have recently been getting many naughty requests from male fans.”

Asked how she feels when people refer to her as ‘Mummy wa’, the busty actress said, “I feel old when people refer to me as ‘Mummy wa’. On the other hand, I feel people see me as someone they have in their home― either as a mother or grandmother.”

She also stated that she had always wanted to become an actress.

She said, “I have always had a passion for acting. While in the university, I participated in church and school dramas. But I didn’t take it very seriously then. I was just having fun. Later, it became a career I wanted to build for myself.”

Sports / Italian Legend Paolo Rossi Dies Aged 64 by webboykiss: 8:27pm On Dec 10, 2020
The Azzurri legend will not only be remembered for his extraordinary playing career, but also his work in the game post-retirement

Italy’s 1982 World Cup hero Paolo Rossi has died two months after his 64th birthday following a battle with illness.

Rossi’s passing was announced in the early hours of Thursday morning by Italian television channel RAI Sport, who he had been working for as a pundit in recent times.

The former Juventus and AC Milan attacker led Italy to World Cup glory at Spain 1982, with the striker winning the tournament’s Golden Ball and Golden Boot with his six goals.

Rossi netted a hat-trick in the famous 3-2 win against Brazil, before scoring both goals in the semi-final against Poland and getting the crucial opener in the final versus West Germany, which the Italians went on to win 3-1 and clinch their third World Cup title.

In winning the World Cup title, Golden Ball and Golden Boot, Rossi became the first player to hold all three honours simultaneously – until the feat was equalled by Ronaldo Nazario in 2002.

Following the 1982 tournament, Rossi’s extraordinary exploits across both international and club football were recognised when he was awarded the Ballon d’Or for that year.

Rossi’s international career included 48 caps and 20 goals for his beloved Italy between 1977-1986

Having begun his club career with Vicenza and then maturing with Perugia, Rossi confirmed himself as a star shortly after he joined Juventus in 1981.

Rossi, also known as Pablito, also played with Milan and Verona at the end of his career, as well as with Como at the beginning – the team he had made his debut in Serie A with.

He scored an incredible 134 goals in 338 club matches and is widely considered one of the best forwards of his time.

Rossi won the Serie A title on two occasions with Juventus in 1981-82 and 1983-84, and also lifted the European Cup with Old Lady in 1984-85.

Even after finishing his playing career, Rossi stayed involved in the game as a columnist and pundit.

“Such terribly sad news: Paolo Rossi has left us,” RAI Sport presenter Enrico Varriale said when announcing the passing.

“Unforgettable Pablito, who made all of us fall in love in that summer of 1982 and who was a precious and competent work colleague in RAI over recent years.

“RIP dear Paolo.”

‘It’s Criminal!’ – Scholes Accuses Man Utd Goalkeeper De Gea Of ‘Bottling It’ Against RB Leipzig

The former Red Devils midfielder singled out the Spanish shot-stopper for criticism after the team’s Champions League failure in Germany

David de Gea “bottled it” against RB Leipzig, according to Paul Scholes, who says the Manchester United goalkeeper was “scared of getting hurt”.

United crashed out of the Champions League after being beaten 3-2 by RB Leipzig in Germany on Tuesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sat top of Group H on goal difference heading into the contest, and only needed a draw to secure safe passage through to the round of 16.

However, the Red Devils made the worst possible start when Manchester City loanee Angelino capitalised on some lackadaisical defending from the visitors to fire home the opening goal of the game with just two minutes on the clock.

Angelino turned provider 11 minutes later, floating in an inch-perfect cross from the left which Amadou Haidara volleyed past De Gea in emphatic fashion, sparking wild scenes of celebration on the Leipzig bench.

United toiled in vain to get back into the game thereafter, and ended up being caught again midway through the second half, with Harry Maguire and De Gea both arguably at fault as Justin Kluivert stole in to chip the ball into the net.

The Spanish shot-stopper turned his back as he went in to challenge Kluivert and Scholes has accused of him of failing to put his body on the line when his team needed him most.

“He bottles it, doesn’t he?” the Red Devils legend told BT Sport post-match. “Basically, he’s scared of getting himself hurt. It should never go across the box.

“Maguire looks wooden, stiff but De Gea as a goalkeeper has to come out and make himself as big as he can.

“Yes, you might get injured but he turns his back away. It’s criminal.”

Solskjaer’s men staged a late comeback to set up a tense final 10 minutes, with Bruno Fernandes netting a penalty and Paul Pogba forcing home a goal, but Leipzig ultimately held on for a famous victory.

Maguire admitted after the final whistle that United “started the game too slow”, which left Scholes perplexed.

“Harry Maguire’s interview was worrying, saying we weren’t ready and at it for the first 20 minutes,” said the former England international.

“How can you not be up for such a big game and such a tough game coming to Germany?

“They should never have been in this position in the first place, but they are, and they are not ready for the first 20 minutes.”

Sports / Van De Beek Sold On Man Utd Move By ‘biggest Club’ Pitch From Fosu-mensah by webboykiss: 1:08pm On Dec 09, 2020
The Red Devils defender has admitted to talking up a switch to Old Trafford for a fellow countryman and expects him to thrive in English football

Timothy Fosu-Mensah has revealed that he played a small part in luring Donny van de Beek to Manchester United with a “biggest club” transfer pitch.

The Red Devils added another Dutchman to their ranks during the summer window when Van de Beek was snapped up from Ajax, with the highly-rated Netherlands international opting to head for Old Trafford over the other options available to him.

Fosu-Mensah sought out a familiar face before that big career call was made, with the Red Devils defender selling the prestige of representing United to a fellow countryman.

The 22-year-old, who once spent time playing alongside Van de Beek in the academy ranks at Ajax, told the Red Devils’ official website: “I told him United is a big club, if not the biggest club.

“I said it’s good if you have the opportunity to come here. We have got very good team-mates, the quality is very good here.

“I said, ‘It’s up to you because I can’t make the decision for you but it’s a very good club’. At the end of the day it was his decision.”

Van de Beek has made a slow start to life in England, with regular game time proving hard to come by amid fierce competition for places.

Fosu-Mensah is, however, confident that the classy playmaker will come good once fully up to speed.

He added: “He’s a good player, a player with a lot of qualities and I think he’s also a good guy so he’ll bring a lot of positive things to the club.”

Fosu-Mensah, who has taken in two appearances for United this season, went on to say of having another compatriot in Manchester: “It feels good.

“It’s special also because we’ve seen each other since we were so small, growing up and then I left when I was 16. He was still at Ajax but we always had good contact with each other.

“When I left for United, I still played for the national youth teams in the Netherlands, the Under-17s, Under-18s, Under-19s, Under-21s, and he was always there. So it’s very special to see him now at Manchester United.”

Van de Beek was handed a started berth in United’s last Premier League outing against West Ham, but he was hauled off at half-time as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer asked Bruno Fernandes to provide a spark in what proved to be another productive afternoon for the Red Devils away from home.

Sports / Okereke Backs Club Brugge To Make History In Champions League by webboykiss: 12:06pm On Dec 09, 2020
The Nigerian forward is optimistic of his side’s chances of progressing beyond the group stage of the European competition

David Okereke believes Club Brugge can make history in the Champions League by advancing into the knock-out stages of the competition.

The Belgian First Division A champions will take on Italian side Lazio in their last group game on Tuesday night.

The Blue and Black are currently third in Group F with seven points from five games, three behind leaders Borussia Dortmund and two adrift of Lazio.

Club Brugge must secure victory over Simone Inzaghi’s side to they seal a place in the next stage of the European competition.

Okereke is optimistic his side can stun the Serie A club to ensure they realize their target of making history in the tournament.

“Whether we were already focused on Tuesday? We take one match at a time and always prepare ourselves for our next opponent,” Okereke told the club website.

“We want to win every match and are professionals. We have to do our job every time we play.

“We are full of energy right now since we won [against Zenit St. Petersburg]. We have nothing to lose in Rome and can write history. We will go for it on Tuesday.”

Okereke teamed up with Club Brugge in the summer of 2019 after signing a four-year contract and has been consistent for his side.

In the current campaign, he has made 12 appearances across all competitions, including two in the Champions League.

The Nigeran forward has scored two goals this season, including his match-winner against Sint-Truiden last Saturday.

Okereke is delighted with how he adapted at the club since his arrival and promised to play anywhere he is needed.

“I feel good and enjoy the matches. Soccer is no table tennis. It is a sport with eleven players,” he continued.

“Club Brugge are a good team. I also adapt myself as a player and play wherever the coach needs me.”

Okereke will be expected to make his third appearance for Club Brugge in the Champions League against Lazio.

Sports / Arsenal Off To Worst League Start In 39 Years After North London Derby Defeat by webboykiss: 4:46pm On Dec 08, 2020
The Gunners were condemned to their sixth Premier League reverse of the new campaign, making some unwanted history in the process

Arsenal’s woes were deepened in defeat on Sunday as their north London derby loss to Tottenham continued to pile the pressure on Mikel Arteta, leaving the club facing their worst league start for almost four decades.

The Gunners were condemned to their sixth Premier League reverse of the new campaign, leaving them closer to the relegation zone than to the summit thanks to goals from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.

With almost a dozen top-flight games under their belt already, Arteta’s side look to be facing an uphill battle to secure a top-six berth once more, having only qualified for this year’s Europa League through their FA Cup victory in August.

Since their triumph at Wembley however, it has been a relatively torrid few months on the domestic front, with three wins from their opening four matches having since translated to just one in their last seven in the league.

A lone point against recently promoted Leeds United is the pick of the bunch in terms of positive results, with the Gunners having lost to Aston Villa, Wolves and Spurs since they last won, against Manchester United at the start of November.

Those results mean that Arsenal have earned just 13 points from 11 league games this season, their lowest return at this stage of a top-flight campaign for 39 years, since 1981-82 when they achieved 12.

In defeat to Jose Mourinho too, Arteta became just the second Arsenal manager to lose each of his first two north London derbies for over half a century, after Bertie Mee in 1966-67.

The manner of the club’s defeat against their rivals – in a game they statistically dominated, with 70 per cent of possession throughout – will rankle the Spaniard too, particularly given his side’s creativity throughout.

Arsenal attempted 32 open-play crosses in total, their most in a single Premier League match for almost five years, since February 2016 against Leicester when they managed 36.

It also represented their most away from home for the better part of a decade, since March 2011 when they also logged 32 attempts against West Brom at the Hawthorns.

Sports / Ejuke Grabs Assist, Idowu In Action As CSKA Moscow Hold Khimki by webboykiss: 1:11pm On Dec 07, 2020
The Nigeria internationals were on parade for their respective cubs as the Red and Blacks shared the points with Viktor Goncharenko’s men

Chidera Ejuke provided an assist and Brian Idowu featured as CSKA Moscow played out a 2-2 draw against Khimki in Sunday’s Russian Premier League game.

Ejuke has been delivering dazzling performances with his impressive dribbling skills for Viktor Goncharenko’s men since teaming up with the side in the summer.

The winger was handed his 12th league appearance which afforded him the opportunity to face his compatriot Idowu, who also started for Khimki.

The game started with both clubs aiming for the opening goal but it did not come until the 40th minute when Nikola Vlasic hit the back of the net with his strike.

Ilya Kukharchuk levelled proceedings shortly after the half-time break and Reziuan Mirzov gave Khimki the lead for the first time in the encounter in the 51st minute.

Ilya Shkurin then scored an important equalising goal for CSKA Moscow three minutes later after receiving a sumptuous pass from Ejuke.

The Nigeria winger struck two shots, made five key passes, had a 100 per cent successful pass rate and made 48 touches on the ball before he was replaced by Fedor Chalov in the 62nd minute.

Idowu also gave a good account of himself in the encounter as he made two tackles, won one aerial contest and made three clearances during his 90 minutes of action.

Ejuke has now made 17 appearances across all competitions for CSKA Moscow, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

Idowu, meanwhile, has featured in 17 games, including 16 in the Russian Premier League since teaming up with the side from Lokomotiv Moscow in the summer.

The Nigeria internationals will hope to continue their consistent performances for their respective clubs in their next league outings.

CSKA Moscow will take on Dinamo Zagreb while Khimki will square off against Arsenal Tula, on December 10 and 11, respectively.

Sports / Odey Winner Ends Amiens Four-game Winless Run In Ligue 2 by webboykiss: 8:58pm On Dec 05, 2020
The Nigeria forward secured all three points for the Unicorns with his second goal in the French second division

Stephen Odey guided Amiens to a 1-0 victory over Dunkerque with his first-half goal in Tuesday’s Ligue 2 encounter.

Odey’s goal earned Oswald Tanchot’s men their first victory in over a month which dates back to a 2-0 win over Sochaux on October 26.

The 22-year-old scored the only goal at the Stade de la Licorne in the 13th minute and he was later replaced in the 70th minute.

Odey has now scored two goals in eight league appearances for Amiens since he moved to France on a season-long loan from Belgian club Genk in September.

A host of African players were also in action for the Unicorns which include DR Congo’s Chadrac Akolo, Ivory Coast’s Cheick Timite, Ghana’s Nicholas Opoku, Senegal’s Molla Wague and Benin’s Youssouf Assogba.

The victory moved Amiens two points behind 11th-placed Dunkerque as they continue their chase for an immediate return to Ligue 1 with 15 points after 13 matches, which leaves them 13th in the second division.

Odey has rediscovered his goalscoring boots in France having fired blanks after 11 games in the Belgian First Division A last campaign.

The Nigeria forward will hope to build on Tuesday’s match-winning strike when Amiens visit Rodez for their next Ligue 2 match on Saturday.

Before travelling to Zurich for his first European adventure in 2017, Odey established himself as a goalscoring machine in the Nigerian top-flight with MFM

He was the second top scorer for the 2016-17 season with 18 goals behind former Lobi Stars striker Anthony Okpotu, who scored 19 goals.

Sports / Liverpool’s Unlikely Hero – How ‘top, Top, Top’ Caoimhin Kelleher Seized His Red by webboykiss: 7:32pm On Dec 03, 2020
The 22-year-old excelled against Ajax in the absence of Alisson Becker, and now looks certain to keep his place for the clash with Wolves

At the final whistle, Jurgen Klopp knew exactly where to head.

To his goalkeeper. To Caoimhin Kelleher, the hero of the hour as far as Liverpool were concerned.

He loves a bear hug, the Reds boss, but this one had a bit more behind it.

“I thought for a second ‘don’t do it’ because the cameras were on,” said Klopp, grinning from ear to ear. “But come on, who cares?!”

What a night for Kelleher. Making his Champions League debut, the 22-year-old was in inspired form, the star performer as a heavily-depleted Liverpool defeated Ajax at Anfield to secure their place in the last 16. It was only his fifth professional appearance, but he’ll never forget it.

What a week it has been for the Irishman. On Saturday he conceded seven at Kirkby as the Under-23s were battered by a rampant Manchester City, and yet here he was, three days later, under the spotlight, repelling one of Europe’s most famous sides.

“Amazing,” Kelleher reflected afterwards. His phone, he said, had been “hopping” as the messages of support and congratulations rolled in.

He’d found out he was playing on Monday afternoon. Alisson Becker had tweaked his hamstring at Brighton, leaving Klopp with a big call to make.

Experience or youth? Stick with Adrian, the much-maligned number two, or go for something different?

He went for the latter, and the gamble paid off.

“It was easy to decide for Caoimhin because he just deserves it,” Klopp said afterwards. “But it was difficult to decide against Adrian because he did really well for us.

“But tonight we needed the package of Caoimhin. We needed his natural football-playing ability.

“We made that decision but you never know how they are going to cope. I am really happy with how calm he was and how good he was.”

Kelleher’s contributions proved decisive, a strong hand to turn over Noussair Mazraoui’s 25-yarder in the first half, a smart stop to his right to deny the same player after the break and then, best of all, razor-sharp reflexes to keep out the substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s point-blank header three minutes from time.

Big saves, important saves. The saves that will surely ensure he keeps his place for the visit of Wolves on Sunday.

A Premier League debut beckons, for the man from Cork.

It may have come sooner, but for an ill-timed bicycle accident. Kelleher suffered a broken wrist after an ill-timed tumble during his summer holiday in 2019.

Had he not, he may well have been the man to step in when Alisson suffered a calf injury in the Reds’ first league match of the campaign a couple of weeks later. As it was, Adrian was given the chance.

Kelleher still played four times last season, with mixed results. He conceded five times in two of those outings, though he also kept two clean sheets and saved crucially from Dani Ceballos in a penalty shootout win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

His last appearance was against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup in February, a game which bore a striking similarity with Tuesday night – a defiant 1-0 win in which Curtis Jones and Neco Williams excelled for the Reds.

Kelleher joined Liverpool in 2015 having been spotted playing for local side Ringmahon Rangers. He might have gone to Manchester City, according to club treasurer Paul Higgins, while Fulham and Aston Villa had him on trial. Five years on, their loss is very much Liverpool’s gain.

A prolific striker in his younger years, it is no wonder Kelleher looked so assured with his feet – both of them – against Ajax. His ability to clip passes to his full-backs, something Adrian has struggled with when called upon, was key as Liverpool sought serenity and composure against the Dutch champions’ high press.

“We needed that,” Klopp admitted. “He’s a top footballer.”

Liverpool had considered loaning out Kelleher, both in January and in the summer. There was interest from the Championship, but they instead chose to send Kamil Grabara, the Poland U21 international, to Danish side AGF Aarhus.

Grabara and Kelleher, generally, have been seen as equals in terms of potential. Liverpool also have Vite Jaros, the highly-rated Czech who was part of their Youth Cup-winning team of 2019, and recently signed Marcelo Pitaluga, the Brazil U17 international, from Fluminense.

Pitaluga, ineligible for the Champions League, played for the U18s in a 4-1 win over Burnley on Tuesday night, and is already said to have caught the eye of senior staff. Keep an eye out for the 17-year-old’s development.

Kelleher, though, is the man with the chance now. He’s had to wait for it, but against Ajax he justified Klopp’s faith.

“Top, top, top,” said the manager when asked to assess his performance.

Few would argue. Same again Sunday, Liverpool will hope.

‘We Have To Do It!’ – PSG Star Neymar Wants To Reunite With Messi Next Season
The Brazilian and Argentine combined to great effect during four seasons together at Camp Nou

Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has said he wants to play alongside former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi next season.

Neymar and Messi were together at Barcelona for four seasons between 2013 and 2017, combining to devastating effect in the Blaugrana’s forward line.

Alongside Luis Suarez, Neymar and Messi would help Barcelona win La Liga twice and the Champions League once, along with three Copa del Rey titles.

Neymar left Barca in the summer of 2017, however, joining PSG in a world-record €222 million transfer.

The Brazilian has been frequently linked with a return to Barcelona since he left Camp Nou, nearly making the move on several occasions.

Meanwhile, Messi’s future with Barca is in major doubt after a tumultuous summer that saw him request a move away, only to rescind that request after the club vowed he would have to battle them in court over the validity of his release clause.

But the Argentine’s deal with Barcelona will expire at the end of the current season, meaning he could be in the final months of his legendary run with the Blaugrana.

Though it’s not clear where a possible reunion would take place, Neymar insisted that he wants to play alongside Messi again after Wednesday’s vital 3-1 Champions League win over Manchester United.

“What I want the most is to enjoy playing with him again,” Neymar told ESPN after scoring a pair of goals against United.

When asked where that reunion would occur, Neymar said with a laugh: “He can play in my role, it wouldn’t be a problem with me!”

He added: “For sure, next year we have to do it.”

The Brazilian star scored in the sixth minute at Old Trafford and then sealed the match in second-half stoppage time as the Ligue 1 side went top of a tightly contested Group H.

PSG are on nine points, as are Man Utd and RB Leipzig, heading into the final matchday of the group next week.

But Neymar’s side only need a draw against Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday to clinch progression to the knockout phase, which would leave United and Leipzig to fight for one remaining spot in the last 16.

Speaking to Eleven Sports PT after the match, Neymar insisted that he hasn’t even considered the possibility of finishing third in the group and playing in the Europa League.

“I’ve never seen myself knocked out of the Champion’s League or playing the Europa League,” Neymar said. “It never went through my head and it won’t.

“With these difficulties, I managed to grow up, to take responsibility. I did not come here to play the Europa League.”
