Politics / Oyo Deploys Specialised Aircraft For Aerial Capturing by Wemimoigida: 2:35pm On Nov 29, 2017
Oyo State Government has appealed to residents in the state to remain calm and cooperative as it deploys specialised aircraft from Wednesday for aerial capturing.

Mr Isaac Omodewu, the State Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Survey, made the appeal on Tuesday, at a news briefing in Ibadan.

The state government recently began the enumeration of landed properties for Geographic Information System (GIS) and planning purposes.

The state government had on Feb. 17 awarded the OYOGIS to GIS/Transport Limited and had since mobilised the company to begin work.

Omodewu urged the people not to panic or entertain any fear as the aircraft moves around the state for the aerial capturing needed for GIS.

“The GIS is a decision support system to the government. It will help the government to take specific decisions on socio-economic matters in the state.

“Making use of the GIS will multiply economic returns on investments in the state.

“ This is the reason why all the features, physical and cultural of the state, will be captured for the process of digital maps,’’ he said.

The commissioner said that GIS would aid fast production of Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O), infrastructure development plan, higher agricultural output, prevention of flood, population census and security monitoring.

Omodewu urged the people to cooperate with state officials carrying out the enumeration exercise.

Mr Peter Ritchie, Project Manager of the company, said they would use an eight metres wing span aircraft for the project.

He said it would fly for 15 days, starting from Wednesday.

Ritchie said the project would be in three stages.

He said they had completed the first stage, which had to do with the technical aspect.

“The project will deliver an institutional framework within which the OYOGIS will provide assurance, certainty and guidance for the general public, professionals and state government officials in all land matters across the state.

“It will also ensure transparency and equity in the processing and execution of all land-related applications and transactions,’’ he said.

According to him, a major element of the project is capacity building and staff training in the operation of automated and digital systems that would also sustain OYOGIS.

The figure, according to the agency is to be captured during a 9-day event to commemorate the 2017 annual Worlds Aids Day, slated for December 1.

Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi made the disclosure at a preevent press conference which held at agency secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan to herald the annual commemoration.

Mrs Ajimobi who doubles as the chairperson of the agency while unveiling plans for the commemoration said the agency is also looking at means of engaging religious leaders on how to help fight the spread of the disease at designated church and jumat services across the state. Speaking through the Executive Secretary of the Agency, Mr Obatunde Oladapo, the wife of the governor said aside from media campaigns, the agency will visit churches and mosques during worship services to enlighten religious leaders and also provide free screening and counselling for the people.

Noting that stigmatisation of people living with the virus remains a huge challenge in the fight against the spread of the virus, Mrs. Ajimobi appealed to members of the public, particularly the media on the use of derogatory words that instills fear in the mind of the people who might be contemplating coming forward for the screening and test. She said: “Free counselling and screening will be available during the religious services, both at the Jumat and Church services.

Three churches and three mosques will hold services simultane ously. We want to engage our religious leaders on those days so that they will enlighten and educate worshippers on the menace of the spread of the virus.

“We are targeting at least 12,500 people for the test across the states. OYOSACA is also seeking to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to give free education to children living with the virus so as to tackle stigmatisation. Oyo state is the other state after Lagos state that commits the highest resources to the fight and campaign against HIV/Aids and we will not relent because there is great advancement in the cure for HIV/AIDs.”

The State Coordinator, Civil Society on HIV/AIDs in Nigeria, (CISHAN), Mr Seun Onifade, pleaded with the members of the public to show the right attitude towards the spread of the virus and access treatment facilities to tackle the issue of spread. State Coordinator, Net work of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPHWAN), Mrs. Bukola Alabi stressed that the people need to have a re-orientation that HIV/AIDs have no cure as it has led to the early and untimely death of people living with the virus. Explaining that with recent progress in the areas of research and breakthrough on the virus, many people who have the virus but accessing available drugs and treatment are living healthy with no trace of the virus on their look. She pointed out that it is only when people don’t access treatment and drugs that they look haggard.

According to her, until the people living with the virus are shown love and care, they may not be bold enough to come out for treatment and stop the spread of the virus, adding that it is the duty of all stakeholders to deploy all resources, financial and material, to curb the spread of the virus.

Politics / Oyo State Government Trains Northern Residents On Agribusiness by Wemimoigida: 1:17pm On Nov 14, 2017
Agriculture which in recent time has become a hub for economic activities, has been tipped by stakeholders to take over from petroleum as the major export commodity for Nigeria. which will boost the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Furthermore, government over the years have embarked on series of programmes and interventions targeted at changing the perception of agriculture which is widely seen as a stressful venture rather than a viable business.

Agribusiness, therefore was introduced in Nigeria to attract youths into agriculture by providing necessary farm mechanisations which makes farming less stressful and more profitable.

This economic improving activity was however copied by the Oyo state government when it gathered its indigenes in the northern part of the country to train them on modern agriculture practices, food safety and agribusiness.

The training workshop which took place at the Oyo State Liaison office in Abuja was targeted at equipping the participants with basic knowledge of agribusiness, loan access and food safety practices.

Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, during the workshop, the Senior Special Assistant to the State governor on Intergovernmental Relations, Dr Olusola Falana, said the government will do a follow up on the training to see areas of interventions.

She noted that the State government will also make arrangements on how the trainees will access some of the Federal government loans and other intervention aids in agriculture to assist them in engaging in agribusiness.

“The Oyo state government is going to follow up on the training workshop, for instance they already have a group, so when they do things in a group it would be easier for them, so maybe they will form a cooperative, so that they can access different kind of benefits from the Federal government, already the Federal government have systems in place where they can rent out tractors and other farming equipment that are affordable and at reduced cost.

“So what we will do for them is to first of all link them up with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in Kano, Kaduna and other northern states where they can go to rent farm equipment, good seedlings. So we will act as a intermediary between them and the Federal government ministries in their states.

“If we are able to do that, it means from now on they will have access to reduced cost of equipment, they will have access to affordable seeds, livestock feeds. From what they were taught it shows that farming is also for those who are educated, you don’t have to bend down and start cutting grass or weeding, there are simple equipment that are not heavy, those things are available for them where they can work for minimum amount of time on their farms and yet have a lot of returns.

Meanwhile, the trainees expressed delight over the training, they also expressed high hopes on the training workshop, calling on the state government to ensure that they are linked up with financial institutions to get loans to start up agricultural activities.

Prince Oye Adeagbo of the Oyo State Descendants Association in Kaduna, said. “my expectation is very high because we came here with high hopes of how we are going to improve our knowledge, especially the way out financially, because we have many of us that are serious about going into agriculture, many of us want to venture into animal husbandry, but without financial support there is nothing we can do.

“So after the workshop which as it is going we are actually impressed, but after all said and done, it is still going to come to access to fund, so the expectation is the knowledge that will come out of the workshop, then the finance that we will be expecting from government.

“Apart from the financial assistance, first of all the workshop as it is going, we are going to get more exposure into the nitty gritty of agricultural practice, what we learnt today, 75 per cent is strange to us.

“I want to venture into animal husbandry generally, rearing of goats and grasscutter, snail, then I will also venture into cultivation and processing of shea butter.

Dr Falana further said that there are loan facilities in the state, adding that the trainees will be qualified before they can access the loan. She also said that subsequently, the Commissioner for Agriculture in the state will be invited to address the trainees on some of the agricultural activities in the state which they can benefit from.

She said: “There are other loans they can access from the state, but they have to qualify for them, so basically when we do a follow up training is when we are going to bring the Commissioner to guide them on how to access loans and other incentives from the state.

Furthermore, the Dr Falana said that an expert was invited from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to train the trainees on how to handle agricultural products to avoid infection.

She said there were plans for some of the trainees, agricultural products to be exported, hence the training was important to teach them how to avoid contamination of the products.

“We have also invited representatives from UNIDO to address them on food processing and food safety. They will be trained on how to get certification from relevant authorities on food safety so that at the long run, they can export their agricultural products.

“So they will be trained on how to buy agricultural products, carefully process them or store them for them to be exported or sold locally.

“So basically what we have provided for them is for them to be able to hire or purchase equipment at reduced rate, to get seeds that are good for their soil, that are certified and can yield good returns at reduced rate and also to teach them how to access fund either from the Federal government or the state”, she noted.

To this effect, a National Expert on Food Safety John Tehinse, from the UNIDO Implemented Project; National Quality Infrastructure Project ( funded by the European Union), was invited to train the participants on food safety.

According to Mr Tehinse, “what I want to tell them is the importance of food safety as it relates to agribusiness. Food safety is key to commercial agriculture, if your food is not safe, nobody is going to buy, so we want to talk to them what is food safety, how to ensure that your food is safe from farm to the table and food safety starts from the farm, so the farmer must understand the concept of food safety.

“Everybody along the chain; the processor, caterer, the transport, everybody must understand the concept of food safety, so that we have a safe food supply chain.

“Once there is a break, then we have food contamination, and if we have food contamination, which can lead to several diseases which include lassa Fever, Diarrhea and others, now we have a lot of Nigerians suffering from cancer and it is food related, so these are some of the things we want to talk about.

“Nigeria is under ban now, about 67 agricultural products, we cannot export, and the reason for that is contamination, food in Nigeria is contaminated and nobody wants to go near it until we are able to preach the gospel of food safety, people accept it, people still talk about food security, if your food is not safe, your food will be dangerous for consumption, so if we understand the concept of food safety, we will now begin to build a culture to practicing safe food healthy practices, and of course we will now begin to talk about agribusiness, so we are laying the foundation”.

Other members from the Oyo State Indigenes Association, Kano were also at the 2-day Argo-Economic Seminar for Oyo State Indigenes, Northern Nigeria.

Politics / Gov Ajimobi: Shaping The Future Of Oyo Through Collaborative Efforts by Wemimoigida: 12:32pm On Nov 11, 2017
Under the watch of Governor Abiola Ajimobi, good governance and exemplary leadership have grown to become an attitude, a settled way of thinking that continually gives fillip to growth and development in Oyo State.

Indeed, good governance has been so well entrenched and institutionalized that it presents a picture of the people’s unwavering trust and confidence in the governor’s specific ability to conduct public affairs and manage public resources in the best interests of the generality of the citizenry rather than a privileged few.

Against this background, it is on record that Gov. Ajimobi consistently makes quality choices that guarantee social, political and economic inclusion of the majority of the citizenry and which over the years have ensured a greater improvement in the quality of life among the citizens.

A typical wise choice was the adoption of Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative as a robust strategy for oiling the wheels of governance and a veritable springboard for accelerated socio-economic development.

For a fact, the governor is unalterably committed to strategic partnership with relevant stakeholders on particular projects or programmes, having realized that the immense benefits accruable from such collaborative efforts, especially with the private sector and development partners cannot be over emphasized as they are usually profound and qualitative in an engaging manner.

In more ways than one, collaborations help to pool resources together for project funding and execution, create synergy that deepens knowledge and increases capacity which in turn results in quality and timely service delivery.

All these attributes of strategic partnership apparently informed Gov. Ajimobi’s decision to reactivate forthwith the synergy between Oyo state government and private organizations on assumption of office six years ago. According to him, ‘’one of the first things we did when we came into office was to immediately begin to oil the rusty hinges of partnership between government and development partners.’’

So, six years down the line, Gov. Ajimobi, a quintessential leader admired for his in-depth perception and reputed for sound judgment, has been consistently guided by this principle of partnership with appropriate stakeholders, a cost effective and feasible option that serves in great measure to solve monumental development issues confronting the state such as infrastructural shortages, high rate of unemployment, debilitating effects of poverty, a rising tide of sundry criminal activities in the society, depreciating standard of education, poor access to affordable and quality healthcare, among others.

Certainly, this is an intelligent choice in view of harsh economic realities in Nigeria today that has made access to funds for development programs and projects hellish.

An instance of such interface between government and appropriate stakeholders was a collaborative effort on peace and security, an endeavor geared towards reducing criminal activities in Oyo state to the barest minimum.

The objective was to ensure a crime free state. The first phase of the Public Private Initiative gave birth to Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF) and the formation of Oyo State Joint Security Patrol Squad – ‘Operation Burst’ in 2012.

The OYSSTF Board of Trustees comprising of notable private sector personalities and supported by heads of security agencies in the state, achieved so much that it was able to significantly stem the tide of prevailing series of political killings, armed robberies, arsons, brigandage, among other forms of insecurity and therefore successfully moved Oyo from a state of anarchy and disequilibrium to a peaceful and tranquil society within a very short time.

Today, Oyo State proudly occupies the enviable position of one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, a feat that has over time contributed substantially to the successful regeneration and transformation undertakings of the Ajimobi administration.

The second phase which took off with the recent inauguration of a new Board of Trustees of OYSSTF is now to be solely private-sector driven in order to address operational hindrances and make room for better efficiency that would ensure even a safer and more peaceful Oyo State.

Going further, Gov. Ajimobi in his characteristic manner of thinking out of the box came up with the novel idea of setting up the Oyo State N50 Billion Healthcare Endowment Fund, a public-private sector initiative that would help secure adequate funding for healthcare projects and programs.

This unique initiative which is being managed by a credible Board of Trustees is surely another laudable effort by the Ajimobi government to overhaul the healthcare sector for better service delivery that would further bring qualitative and affordable healthcare services to the doorsteps of the common man on the street.

Also in an attempt to address the rot in the education sector, the Governor set up the Oyo Education Trust Fund, a collaborative strive that was launched recently with a mandate to its Board of Trustees to seek funds from appropriate stakeholders with a view to assisting the government in completing its intervention projects.

This move, according to the governor, would go a long way in restoring the fading education glory of the state and therefore put in place a conducive learning environment, excellent instructional materials, an upgrade of infrastructural facilities to an acceptable world standard, as well as quality and well motivated teachers.

Further to this was the creation of School’s Governing Boards (SGB) that will provide management functions for each public secondary school in the state to enable them meet performance targets.

The SGB, which comprises a diverse membership of community leaders, old students associations, PTAs, technocrats, among others, is clearly a praiseworthy collaborative effort that promises to rebuild the education sector and checkmate poor academic performance in public schools.

In the same breath, the essence of strategic partnership was well exemplified in the newly established Technical University in Ibadan, Oyo State, and the first of its kind not only in Nigeria but Africa. Designed to enrich learning experience, the university was formatted as a self-sustaining public-private initiative whereby stakeholder contributions locally and internationally would not only be easily accessible but institutionalized.

A good example was the intervention by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through the donation of a library building, lecture rooms and an administrative block.

On the whole, we must give kudos to Governor Ajimobi for taking full advantage of opportunities therein public-private partnerships in every sector of the economy to enrich lives and inspire a better future for the people of Oyo State, more so that successive governments before Ajimobi’s administration never took optimal advantage of the benefits of strategic partnership to push up development to an appreciable level.

Politics / Ajimobi, Prophet With Honour Among Oyo Muslims by Wemimoigida: 6:17pm On Nov 01, 2017
“A prophet is not without honour, except in his own country, and in his own house,” so say the Scriptures. This was however not the case for the governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, who was recently celebrated by the Muslim community of the state in grandeur. The community said it decided to roll out the drums in honour of the governor in acknowledgment of his penchant for promoting religious harmony and for delivering good governance. The Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, venue of the ceremony, witnessed an unprecedented gathering of Islamic faithful, scholars and preachers from Oyo State and across the Southwest zone, under the aegis of Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN). At the epochal event, the enviable award of “The Most Equitable Governor in the History of Oyo State” was conferred on Ajimobi for what the Muslim community called his equitable, fair and just relationship with Christians, Muslims and traditionalists across the state.

Already, Ajimobi’s closet is replete with diadems from various groups, associations and educational institutions in recognition of his selfless toil and sweat that have changed the face of the state in the last six years. But, the latest award is priceless because never in the history of the state had any governor been bestowed with such a honour by the Muslim community. Among key Muslim leaders that graced the event were the Secretary of MUSWEN, Prof. Dawud Noibi; Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Dawud Akinola; Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abul-Ganiyy Abubakar; popular Islamic preacher, Sheikh Muideen Bello and Prof. Kamil Oloso. The chairman, Muslim Community of Oyo State, Alhaji Kunle Sanni, told the gathering that the award was not born of “hypocrisy, politically-motivated praise-singing or sycophantic favour-seeking.” Rather, he said that it was a meritorious honour that was derived from the Holy Quran, Chapter 55, verse 60, which reads “with what shall we reward goodness except goodness. Which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?”

Sanni said: “One day, somebody came to the holy Prophet Muhammed (SWA). He said I love somebody. The Prophet said: `Have you told him? He said ‘No.’ The Prophet said: ‘Go and tell him.’ For the goodness that the governor has done for the sake of religious harmony in Oyo State, we want to exhibit the Islamic spirit of appreciation by saying Jazakumullahu khairan (May Allah reward you abundantly).” For the records, he said that the Muslim community decided to honour the governor in appreciation of his ‘unprecedented disposition’ to legitimate demands by Muslims when compared with the lukewarm disposition some of his predecessors to such demands. Going down memory lane, he disclosed that Colonel Adetunji Olurin (who was Military Administrator of the state from September 1985 to July 1988) was the only governor that fostered harmonious relationship with the Muslim community, since the administration of Chief Bola Ige. He said the late Cicero of Esa-Oke, who governed the state between 1979 and 1983, also maintained a balance between Muslims and Christians and consulted widely among all religious leaders before taking decisions.

“Let me state without any fear of being contradicted that when Governor Ajimobi first came on board, it was not easy between us. Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Arisekola-Alao (the late Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland) used to settle quarrels between us, because he (Ajimobi) misunderstood our quest for justice to mean Islamic fanaticism of the highest pedestal. However, we wrote a stinker to him one day when we felt short-changed in a board he inaugurated. Instead of getting annoyed, he invited us to a meeting. He said we should convince him that he had been unjust. To our surprise, the governor bowed to our superior argument and included more Muslims in the board.” Another reason the religious leader adduced for the honour conferred on the governor was his decision to acquiesce to the Muslim’s demand for the declaration of a public holiday to mark the first Muharam, the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Besides, Sanni said the governor wormed his way into the heart of Muslims through the composition of a balanced executive council and boards of government parastatals, as well as his decision against the clamour for the return of mission schools to original owners.

Sanni said: “When we asked that our Muslim girls be allowed to wear hijab, we did not say Christian girls should be forced to adorn same. The day we went to the governor on the hijab proposal, he did not think twice before granting our request. That was 10 years after two Muslim governors rejected our appeal. May Allah bless the soul of one of them; the other one is still alive. Since January 1 is the beginning of the Christian year imposed on us by the colonialists, the governor has made history by righting the wrongs that had been done against Muslims for ages. He has succeeded in maintaining religious peace in Oyo State where his predecessors have failed. That is why he is being honoured. May Allah elevate him beyond his imagination and make him worthy of Aljannah in the hereafter.”

The fiery preacher said, “Lagos is working today because Governor Akinwumi Ambode started from where former Governor Babatunde Fashola stopped by ensuring the completion of all the projects he inherited. I want to beg you not to install anybody who will not sustain your legacy or abandon any project you may leave behind. You are a listening governor, unlike some of your predecessors. Now that they are out of office, they have ruined the chances of any of their family members to aspire to such position again because of their maladministration and incompetence.” The governor also received commendations from other speakers, including the Chief Imam of Akobo Central Mosque, Sheikh Abibullah Buhari and the Are Musulumi of Yorubaland, for his efforts at promoting good governance and peaceful co-existence among religious adherents in the state. In his acceptance speech, the governor expressed appreciation to the Muslim community for finding him worthy of the honour, which he described as symbolic. According to him, Muslims don’t just give such an award to anybody. Ajimobi said that when he was contesting for governorship, he told God that if he would not use the position to worship Him and serve humanity, He (God) should not allow him to win. He added, “I thank God that what we are doing today is a celebration of answered prayer. I’m what I am today because God has destined it.’’

He used the occasion to appeal to the people of the state to always thank God for His good deeds and that they should always forgive any wrong done to them in order to have their prayers answered. The latest honour, no doubt, is an addition to the bejewelled cap of Ajimobi, who has vowed to sustain the development, peace and harmony he had restored to the pacesetter state.

Agriculture / How We Saved N216bn On Rice Import Alone — bon by Wemimoigida: 10:49pm On Oct 26, 2017
Nigeria has saved over $600m dollars (N216bn) from the importation of rice alone from Thailand and other countries since the nation’s domestic mass production flooded the markets under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme.

The figure represents a fraction of a staggering $22bn (N7.92tr) spent on importation of foods into the country annually prior to the advent of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The Executive Director, Risk Management and Finance, Bank of Agriculture, disclosed this when he led a delegation of top officials of the bank on a courtesy call to Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, in his office, in Ibadan, on Thursday.

Akenzua said it was worthy of commendation that the country had committed itself to diversifying from oil economy, with emphasis on revitalization of agriculture.

He said he had embarked on advocacy visit around the country to enlist the support and involvement of state governments in the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, which, he said, had freed the country from reliance on importation of rice.

Akenzua said, “We enjoin Oyo State to participate in the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, as we have rejigged the programme to expand the scope of beneficiaries. The pilot scheme was so successful that $600m was saved from rice importation due to massive rice production in the country.

“One or two rice millers in Thailand have closed down because Nigeria, which has always been their major importer, has stopped importing their rice.

“We used to spend $22bn importing food into Nigeria and with our consciousness that every square meter in the country is arable land, we felt that it was not sustainable.

Of course, the crash in crude oil price has forced us back to agriculture.”

The ED said that the state could choose a particular crop it wished to produce under the programme, with a promise to either co-fund or completely fund the production of such crop.

In his response, the governor commended the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, for what he called the positive changes he had brought into the agriculture sector since taking over the ministry.

The governor stated that the fundamental problem besetting the country was attitudinal, stressing that the country was not bereft of knowledge, policies and programmes capable of boosting its economy.

Ajimobi said that the state was supposed to be the food basket of the nation if past leaders had seen agriculture as a major solution to hunger and economic driver, as well as a main source of employment for the youth.

According to him, the state was in good stead to be a major agric hub, judging by the concentration of reputable research institutions in the state, its vast arable land, as well as location between Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of the country, and the North among other comparative advantages.

He advised the new management of BOA to do all that was humanly possible to sustain the momentum in its renewed drive to revitalize the agriculture sector.

Ajimobi said “You need to change the attitude of our people so they would know that there is money in agriculture. We are in this sorry state today because of bureaucracy and lack of sustenance of past agric policies. What has happened to Operation Feed the Nation?

“The new management of BOA has started well. I hope you will maintain the zeal with which you have started. Don’t just talk the talk, walk the talk. In the past, some people will just give loans to themselves, which they knew they would not recover and this had crippled the bank.

“Oyo State is ready to take advantage of all opportunities available in agriculture to promote the standard of living of our people. We believe that with the natural endowment in our state we should be the food basket of Nigeria.

“I salute the giant strides of the Ministry of Agriculture under the leadership of the Minister, Chief Audi Ogbeh. I have known him for many years as a man of impeccable character, a professional with high sense of responsibility.”

The governor promised to lead by example by also venturing into commercial agriculture, urging the BOA team to advise him on how he could go about obtaining a loan for the purpose.

Politics / 21 Ibadan Obas: It’s Not Ajimobi’s Idea, High Chiefs Asked For It – Oba Salaudee by Wemimoigida: 10:34am On Oct 26, 2017
THE Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Amidu Ajibade Salaudeen, yesterday, said that it is wrong to say that Governor, Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, approved chieftaincy reforms and elevated eleven high chiefs and some Baales to the position of kings for selfish reasons as it was not the governor’s idea but a demand by the high chiefs.

Oba Salaudeen explained that the high chiefs went to the governor and continued to harass him because it is their right and they had to fight for it, adding that they had to involve Ibadan elders when the governor showed reluctance in granting their requests.

“I want to inform people today that the Oyo State chieftaincy reform and the elevation of high chiefs and Baales in Ibadan, contrary to belief, are not the governor’s idea. We asked for it. Ajimobi didn’t plan it. He did not come for us, rather, we went to him with our requests and he told us to write him officially. We did, yet he did nothing.

“So we reported him to the Central Council for Ibadan Indigenes and the Ibadan Elders Forum after which we were told to write again and we even held a meeting at Ambassador Saanu’s house with our father, the Olubadan in attendance and there was no misunderstanding during the meeting,” Oba Salaudeen said.

The traditional ruler, who was speaking during a reception held for the four elevated traditional rulers from Akinyele Local Government by the Chairmen of Akinyele Local Government, Akinyele South Local Council Development Area and Akinyele East Local Council Development Area at the council secretariat at Moniya in Ibadan stated that it was a long process with the high chiefs harassing the governor frequently.

According to him, when the governor set up a seven-man committee to look into the matter, the high chiefs raised a protest that there were few Ibadan indigenes and the governor told them to look for four others, adding that the CCII selected the four other members of the panel.

He added further that it is indeed a fallacy and unfair to say the governor did the elevation for political purposes, adding that those peddling the rumour are just using the matter for political and selfish interests.

“I also want to add that our father, the Imperial Majesty of Ibadan land is a gentleman and a father and he is not responsible for the various statements attributed to him. We know those behind it but we will not join them in mudslinging. We are all loyal to our father and that is how it will remain,” Oba Salaudeen stated, adding that, “we all get our salaries as at when due from the governor and it is a lie that any high chief is not paid his due.”

Politics / How The Ajimobi-led OYSG Has Thrived With Ppps by Wemimoigida: 12:39pm On Oct 25, 2017
Quite a handful of the landmark projects either completed or ongoing in Oyo state under the Ajimobi administration were birthed from the smart and internationally-applicable policy known as PUBLIC-PRIVATE-PARTNERSHIPS (PPPs).

The Technical University with Central Bank of Nigeria, the Ibadan Circular Road with ENL Consortium, state-wide and state-of-the-art road constructions, the Inland Dry Port with AP Maersk, the Polaris Pacesetter Free Trade Zone with a Chinese Consortium in the of China Polaris Technologies Group, the Milk Collection Center with Friesland-Campani WAMCO, the Schools’ Governing Board, etc, are examples of the ways by which the Ajimobi government has deployed the gains of PPPs.

Contrary to wrong opinions, when a project or initiative is termed “PPP”, it is NOT solely FUNDED by government; in fact, a public-private partnership is a contractual arrangement between a public agency (federal, state or local) and a private sector entity. Through this agreement, the skills and assets of each sector (public and private) are shared in delivering a service or facility for the use of the general public.

But a higher motivation for governments considering public–private partnerships is the assured possibility of bringing in new sources of FINANCING for funding public infrastructure and service needs – This has been one of the key ways by which the Ajimobi-led Oyo state government has mitigated the effect of recession and dwindling allocation, bringing in projects and policies to sustain its repositioning agenda.

Governments all of over the world have used such a mix of public and private endeavors throughout history to drive development.

Health / Breast Cancer Month In Oyo: Celebrating With Further Awareness & Advocacy by Wemimoigida: 3:08am On Oct 21, 2017
Even as Nigeria has the highest cancer death rate in Africa, Breast Cancer still constitutes a major public health issue globally with over 1 million new cases diagnosed annually, resulting in over 400,000 annual deaths and about 4.4 million women living with the disease.

Despite the alarming pieces of statistic, a large number of women in Nigeria are still not aware of the risks they bear, mainly due to lack of awareness, poverty, and general lack of availability of equipment and personnel.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. It is recorded as the second leading cause of death in women worldwide. Only lung cancer kills more women each year.

85 per cent of women who have breast cancer do not have a family history of breast cancer, affecting one in eight women during their lives.

Cancer is not just a health issue; it has a far reaching social and economic implication, which is why we need to encourage a sister, mother, cousin or friend to get the necessary life saving mammogram, and routinely conduct regular monthly self breast examinations.

Currently there is no sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer; therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breastcancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancercan be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases, palliative care to relieve the suffering of patients and their families is needed.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.

We need to use this opportunity to spread the word about steps women can take to detect breast cancerearly, by simply making healthy lifestyle changes to maintain overall health and well being, and more importantly, practice self-breast examinations every month in order to detect any unfamiliar changes in the breast that can prevent the deadly disease,Breast Cancer, if taken seriously.

Spread the word, think Pink!

According to the governor, who was represented by the commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, the infrastructural development would be completed in the next 12 months to wear the schools new looks.

“The Oyo State is vast and large and in the entire South West, Oyo State has highest number of public secondary and primary schools. When the government constituted the School Governing Board (SGB), the idea was that when all hands are on deck, we will able to solve the problem of infrastructure in all the 628 secondary schools in the state.

“I want to emphasise that the state government has set aside N5.6billion to be spent on infrastructural development in all schools in the state. Coupled with what individuals like Hon. Ayoade, SGB and government are doing, we are confident that by the next 12 months, all schools will wear new looks.

“And I also want to emphasize that this year WAEC result is the best since 1999 as the state has 54.18% this year against 21% it scored in 2015. This shows that the effort of the state government is yielding positive results”, the governor said.

Earlier in his address, the facilitator of the projects, Honourable Gbenga Ojoawo who was represented by his Special Adviser, Mrs. Yejide Olarinde informed that the gesture is to key into the recent Private Public Partnership adopted by the state government and adoption of schools for reconstructive academic rejuvenation for the state.

Politics / OLUBADAN REVIEW: Let The Court Decide, Oyo APC Tells Seriki Head, Others by Wemimoigida: 9:45pm On Oct 15, 2017
Oyo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the head of the seriki line, Chief Adebayo Oyediji and all those aggrieved with the recent Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration Review to wait for the judgment of the court of law instead of embarking on media vituperations.

The party explained that Governor Abiola Ajimobi aligned with the submissions of major stakeholders in the decision arrived at, stating that it is erroneous to say it was political intimidation as posited by Chief Oyediji.

The party’s Director of Media, Research and Strategy, Dr AbdulAzeez Olatunde said that all interested parties could join the suit in the court of law, noting that the judiciary is the appropriate place to seek redress and not the media space.

He maintained that since the Seriki Chiefs led by Chief Oyediji are already in court on the Olubadan chieftaincy issue, they should wait for the judgment of the court rather than be the judge in their own case.

“Now that the case is in court, we want to appeal to all those that are aggrieved to be part of the suit instead of a fruitless media war. However, we want to put it on record that the governor did not do anything to disrupt the ascendancy and succession structure of the Olubadan Chieftaincy stool.

“There was only a review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration based on the submissions of memoranda and at public sittings by major stakeholders. However, any objection to the review can be challenged at the court of law which some people are already doing,” Olatunde stressed.–

Politics / SGB: Oyo Govt. Lauds Bovas Group Contribution To Education by Wemimoigida: 9:55am On Oct 13, 2017
The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela gave the commendation in Ibadan on Thursday at the official handing over and commissioning of Bovas Group sponsored projects donated to St Louis Grammar School, Mokola, noting that the gesture will in no small way create conducive environment for teaching and learning of science in the school.

Some of the projects donated by the independent petroleum company, Bovas Group include: drilling of an industrial borehole, renovation of science laboratories, purchase of chemicals and apparatus for laboratories, installation of storex stand and tank, piping of gas and water into various laboratories.

Others are, provision of burners and cylinders, purchase of reagent benches for the chemistry laboratory, supply of cabinets and racks for test tubes to the three laboratories and production of stools for the chemistry laboratory.

Speaking further, Professor Olowofela maintained that the state government alone cannot provide all the necessities of quality education for all, partly because of the astronomical increase in the number of school age children and number of schools while in another vein, competing needs between education and other demanding social services which the government must attend to poses another important factor to be reckoned with in the scheme of things.

Olowofela’s statement reads, “Governor Ajimobi has consistently been calling for a participatory approach to education financing in which all stakeholders are enjoined to actively contribute their quota in the provision of free and qualitative education.

“In this connection, the state government has stretch out her hands of partnership by inviting stakeholders to contribute their quota to its educational delivery. It is in line with this position that Bovas Group has demonstrated a good sense of partnership with the state government to move education forward by providing for this school, science equipments, in order to enhance teaching and learning of science.

“If we are praising Bovas today, is commitment to duty and the company has decided to give back to the society. The importance of science in the development of any nation cannot be overemphasized. It is my prayer that Bovas Group will continue to flourish”, the commissioner added.

Imploring the management, teachers as well as the students to make the best use of the facilities, he, therefore urged all and sundry to come on board and support government in her drive aimed at restoring, reforming and repositioning the education sector in the state.

The School Principal, Mrs R. O Ladipo in her welcome address, while praising Bovas hinted that with the construction of the borehole, the school now enjoyed portable water, stressing that the teaching of science practicals has now been made easy as science teachers do not teach in abstract any longer.

She said, “let me reiterate that our present Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi meant no harm when he initiated the idea of partnership which was misunderstood. What he clamoured for then is exactly what Bovas Group had done”.

Politics / Southwest Apc Hails Govs, Ministers Other Representatives In Govt by Wemimoigida: 1:58am On Oct 13, 2017
The leadership of the Southwest All Progressives Congress has applauded the performance of governors and National Assembly members elected on the ticket of the party, as well as ministers appointed from the region.

The leaders gave the commendation through the former Interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, after a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Oyo State Governor’s Office, Ibadan, on Thursday.

He said that the meeting assessed the performance of governors, national assembly members and those appointed into the Federal Executive Council from the region and was satisfied with their stewardship so far.

Akande said, “APC leaders in the Southwest, together with our representatives in government at the state and national levels, met to review what we decided upon in our meeting of January. We could see the efforts of our leaders in government and we are happy that we are on course.

“The summary of what we expected from them was discussed and we are happy that our governors and ministers have performed excellently well.

“We tried to review our position and we are pleased to see that as a party, we are doing all we can to have Ekiti back into the APC. We are concerned more though about the services of our government to the people more than electoral matters.”

He dismissed the alleged rift within the rank and file of the leadership of the party in the region, insisting that the last meeting ended on a happy note as against reports of rancour being peddled by a section of the media.

.

Akande said, “You can see that we are happy together. Some of the people who never wished us well reported that we fought and dispersed in our different ways without even saying the closing prayers when we met last. It is not true.

“We held a meeting, we had a minute of the meeting and I am happy to inform you that our various governors and ministers have been doing well in implementing what we decided upon at the last meeting.

“We are for the people of the Southwest. We are for the development of our people. We are for the good of the economy. We are meeting so that our governors and other representatives can be talking to us from time to time so that we can know how much we are benefiting from the existing government.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the host governor called on his colleagues, party leaders and other public office holders under the APC to sacrifice their self interest and work more towards surmounting developmental challenges confronting the region.

As the countdown to 2019 beckons, Ajimobi said it had become imperative for the leaders to engage in some introspection to identify what could have been done differently, and if necessary, go back to the drawing board to proffer agreeable methods on the way forward.

Ajimobi said, “Let me state here that as leaders, it is incumbent on us to brainstorm and forge a unity of purpose which will be beneficial to the people who have put us into these leadership positions.

“Our past leaders, wherever they found themselves, used to exhibit such attributes as vision, determination, selflessness, courage, steadfastness and passion for the emancipation of their people.

“We must, therefore, renew our resolve to re-enact these qualities in order to bring back the lost glory of our region and reposition it for our people, in order that they may enjoy the full benefits of entrusting our party with their destinies.”

In the last three years, he said that the party had recorded tremendous achievements worthy of celebration, noting, however that there was the need for the APC to focus attention on agriculture to boost the country’s economy.

According to him, the region had comparative advantage in agriculture, given its vast arable land, highest concentration of agric research institutes, clement weather and the location of Ikere Gorge Dam, which has the capacity to irrigate the entire region, in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State.

Ajimobi said, “We must become the food basket of Nigeria through integrated farming and value addition. In this regard, the completion of Ikere Gorge Dam, which has multidimensional benefits to agriculture, water supply and electricity, is imperative.

“We must ensure speedy completion of the ongoing expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Express way, the rail projects and other infrastructural development. Our representatives at the national assembly must be ready to support the region if and when it decides to show interest in who runs the planned concession of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport.

“On the political front, the gubernatorial elections for Ekiti and Osun are fast approaching. All hands must be on deck to ensure victory for our party.”

The meeting was attended by Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun State); Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo State); Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos State); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun State); and the host, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

Also in attendance were the Senate Chief Whip, Prof. Sola Adeyeye; Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Lasun Yusuf; House Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; and National Vice Chairman (Southwest) of the APC, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr, Kayode Fayemi; his Communications counterpart, Mr. Adebayo Shittu; and Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Prof, Claudius Daramola, were also part of the deliberations.

Four former governors: Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun); Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala (Oyo); Chief Niyi Adebayo (Ekiti); and Chief Segun Osoba (Ogun) also graced the occasion.

Akande had earlier told journalists that the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other ministers who could not make it to the meeting sent their apologies, stressing that there was unity and cohesion among all of them.

Politics / Oyo Govt Boosts Agric, To Give Farmers Unused Land by Wemimoigida: 8:41am On Oct 10, 2017
Oyo State Government has appealed to custodians of arable land across agrarian communities in the state to make them available to individuals and investors wishing to engage in large scale agricultural ventures.

The government said the appeal became necessary in view of the difficulties individuals and corporate organizations encounter in securing land for commercial cultivation, despite the availability of 2.5 million hectares of fertile land.

Addressing newsmen at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, yesterday, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, Prince Oyewole Oyewumi, said the state had vast arable lands, most of which were idle.

He said that the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration had begun a sensitization programme aimed at educating the people on the need to surrender such land for mechanized agriculture under mutually beneficial arrangements.

With oil, currently the nation’s cash cow, now under threat of diminishing value in the near future, he said that the government was determined to exploit the potential in the agric value chain to boost its economic revival.

The commissioner said that the initiative would enhance agriculture production, while the value chain would create job opportunities and promote food security.

Oyewumi said: “A committee was set up by the governor and it came up with an agriculture land policy to ensure the cultivation of idle arable land across the state. Land is a major asset for us in this state.

“So, it is important that they are made available and accessible for people who are willing to invest in agriculture under mutually beneficial arrangements. The policy is not aimed at forcibly taking over lands

“Land owned by communities and individuals can be made available to investors for productive purposes. Landowners are encouraged to use their lands with support from the government through the out-growers’ and off-takers’ scheme.’

“The scheme involves a collection or a group of farmers who work together to produce particular crops and farm produce and thereafter sell them off to another group of agric investors at the prevailing market price.

“Another scheme is for lands to be leased or rented out to prospective investors-farmers or farmers’ cooperatives. Both parties will mutually agree to the terms by deciding the duration of the lease and the type of crops to be cultivated.

“Outright sale of the land is another option. An agreement between a willing buyer and willing seller can be reached, but the government will not force anyone to sell off his or her land.

“Also, there is the option of payment of royalty, where farm produce is given to landowners in exchange for the use of the land for the agreed period. There is also the option of a partnership agreement between land owners and investors where the land could be used as equity by the land owner in a partnership arrangement with investors.”

The commissioner expressed optimism that the new policy would open up the communities to investors and boost the state’s economy.
