A beautifully written piece but I have some observations. You didn't mention how things were very different back then. How other physical factors asides exercising contributed to your health and long living.

I believe everything in life is relative. Older generations lived healthier lives but we have a longer lifespan than them because of advancements in medicine.

Let's go back to the medieval times where people lived very healthy lives. They did very physical jobs, rode horses, donkeys and ate food directly from the soil. But the average lifespan was very low due to famine, wars, etcetera. In the 70s, 80s and earlier, many cures and vaccines had not been discovered and a lot of people died young. Read about the Smallpox which killed an estimated 300 million people in the 20th century and read about the Spanish Flu.

In the 70s and 80s, countries were still developing. People lived close to where they worked. There were no mega cities, no efficient means of transportation as we have today. Now, due to urban planning in cities all over the world, residential areas are situated a distance away from commercial buildings. Most people can't afford to live near their workplace. Everything is built around distance and speed. That's why people don't trek anymore.

It is not fair to keep comparing this generation to the previous one. Things have change drastically and you have to acknowledge that those things have contributed to our health. Nowadays many people don't farm. You go to the market and buy food to eat. Are you aware of the chemicals that have been used on what you buy, are you aware of how it was stored? All these things contribute to our health. Now we have GMO crops and food everywhere. The truth is, if you don't farm your own crops, grow your own food and rear your own animals, there's a likely chance that you'll keep consuming poison from all those things you buy from the market. And no amount of exercise can save you from the damage that poison will cause in the long run.


Anyways, you all should endeavor to engage in physical activities when you can. It will help you in the long run. Also watch you eat.
