WAR AGAINST KPOFIRE:
DELGA Chairman Raids, Destroys Illegal Oil Bunkering Sites In Bille
•••Declares Zero Tolerance To Menace
•••As Community Backs Government's Action

In continuation of the fight against illegal oil bunkering activities in Degema Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman of the LGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, Sunday, raided and set ablaze, some artisanal refining sites, popularly known as kpofire at Oruama-Kiri in Bille Kingdom.

The Council Chairman, who went on the raid in company of some Community members, including chiefs and youths of Bille, as well as a detachment of security operatives, declared zero tolerance to the illicit act in the LGA.

He said government would no longer keep silent and watch, while some group of recalcitrant individuals, commit crimes against the State and humanity in general, through economic sabotage and generating deadly soot, that poses serious health challenge to people of Rivers State and beyond.

The Council Boss, who earlier visited the Palace of the Amanyanabo of Bille Kingdom, HRH King Igbikingeri Ngowari Cornelius Herbert, Agbaniye-Jike XVIII, commended the Monarch and people of Bille for swiftly swinging into action, in sensitizing their people against involving in the illegal activity, in line with the directive, issued to them at the end of the stakeholders meeting between the Council administration and traditional rulers in the LGA, last Tuesday.

He apprised that his visit to the Palace was to intimate the Monarch and his Council of Chiefs about his mission and seek their leave to invade their territory, in search of locations where the kpofire operations were taking place.

"Your Royal Highness, we are not here to kill, arrest or accuse anyone, but we are here, on the mandate of the Governor, to do the needful and stop this illegal activity that is threatening our very existence as humans inhabiting in this grossly polluted environment of ours.

"My father, the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, had aptly described this kpofire menace as worse than Boko Haram, because the latter is a known terrorist group, while the former is an invisible and deadly killer.

"If you see the level of degradation in our once flourishing and endowed environment, you will understand the reason why our mothers and fathers can no longer easily get fishes, prawns, shrimps, perewinkles, oysters and other rich seafoods in our nearby creeks, without going far into the ocean.

"I therefore appeal to our people to cooperate with government to end this menace and restore our ecosystem for the benefit of the present and future generations," Hon. Williams stated.

In his response, the Amanyanabo of Bille Kingdom, HRH King Igbikingeri Ngowari Cornelius Herbert, Agbaniye-Jike XVIII, commended the Council Chairman for courageously leading the fight against the illegal bunkering activities across the LGA, even on a Sunday, praying God to continue to grant him more courage, wisdom and strength to serve the people of DELGA.

The Monarch stated that following the directive given to the traditional rulers, as custodians of their Communities, the people of Bille had already started sensitizing their people and urging whosoever that is involved to stop immediately, as it was not only an economic sabotage against the government, but also very hazardous to people living and doing business within the area.

The traditional ruler, who declared the full support of Bille people to the operation in the area, also disclosed that the community would soon set up an Anti-Kpofire Surveillance Committee, to be headed by the Councillor representing Bille (Ward 16), Hon. Elvis Osima Pretoru Gogo, whose mandate would be to routinely scout the area and report findings to government.

The royal father restated his earlier call on government to revisit the concept of modular refineries as a panacea for the scourge, as according to him, establishing same would not only permanently address the issue, but would also create jobs for the teeming unemployed youths across the troubled Niger Delta region.

The Council Chairman was accompanied on the raid by principal officers of Degema Council, chiefs representing the Bille Council of Chiefs, youths and members of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Bille Clan, and a combined team of Security operatives.

2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day:
DELGA Chairman Drums Support For Legionnaires
•••Says Fallen Heroes Sacrificed To Keep Nigeria United

As the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day is commemorated across the Nation, the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has appealed to spirited individuals in the society to support the welfare of serving, retired and fallen heroes of the country.

Speaking at the occasion, which took place at the Council headquarters in Degema, the Chairman stated that by remembering the sacrifices of men of the Armed Forces, it would motivate those in active service to know that their efforts were well acknowledged, and would also encourage families of fallen heroes to know that the Nation honours and remembers their loved ones.

"The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is a special day set aside to celebrate, honour and remember our heroes that risked their lives for us to be safe.

"Although some of them have passed on, yet some others are still here with us, either on retirement or in active service to the Nation.

"Occasions like this therefore gives us an opportunity to remember and appreciate their gallantry and selfless sacrifice, and for those fallen heroes, it is incumbent on us to remember their widows, children and loved ones they left behind, and give them the little support we can, to encourage them, as well as motivate those still in service," he said.

The Council Boss, who donated the sum of One Million Naira (1,000,000,00) to the Legionnaires in Degema LGA, also motivated other principal officers of his administration, councillors and other stakeholders to make compassionate donations towards the welfare of the Ex-Servicemen in the LGA.

He encouraged the Legionnaires to continue to believe in the Country they sacrificed to keep united and make judicious use of whatever is given to them, adding that their sacrifices would not go in vain.

He added that his administration, just like that of Governor Nyesom Wike, believes in the unity of Nigeria and would continue to support the security operatives, who put their lives in the line to secure the territorial integrity of the Country.

Earlier, Chairman of the Legionnaires in DELGA, Soye Duke, had in his address, commended the Council Chairman for his massive support to the Legionnaires, both at the State and LGA levels.

Soye Duke, who is also the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Council Chairman, also thanked the Chairman for his compassionate disposition towards the Legion, adding that they had never been so cared for in the past.

He bemoaned the lackadaisical and nonchalant attitude of Nigeria towards men of the Armed Forces, who sacrificed their all for the peace and security of the Nation, calling for an attitudinal change in that regard.

"To tell ourselves the bitter truth, it does appear that this is the only period we talk about the sacrifice made by these fallen heroes, who laid down their lives for all of us.

"It is rather unfortunate that these great heroes, being referred to as fallen heroes and the veterans; these gentlemen who actually paid the ultimate price, are not genuinely respected and appreciated.

"It is sad and painful that the same society they died for, have suddenly turned against them at a time like this.

"It is with this regret in our hearts that we are appealing to the general public to change their perception about the veterans, fallen heroes and their dependents, because these groups of gentlemen need your care, love and support," Duke stated.

Highpoint of the ceremony was laying of wreath by the Council Chairman, alongside heads of other military and paramilitary agencies in the LGA.

The event was well attended by dignitaries and stakeholders including the Council Boss, Hon. Michael John Williams, Commander of 103 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Major Ayuba, Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Friday Eboka; represented by the Police Area Commander, ACP Lawal Adamu Shinkafi and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Degema, SP Hamza.

Others include; representatives from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Customs Service, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Legionnaires, as well as widows of Ex-Servicemen.

Others were, Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA) in Delga, Directors in the various Ministries/Department and Traditional rulers and chiefs of the Degema Traditional Rulers Council.

Also in attendance were, the Vice Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Mrs. Maureen Harry, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delga, Disciple Peter Abbey, as well as top functionaries and other appointees of the administration.

Soot:
Submit Names Of 'Kpofire' Operators Within Your Locality To Council, DELGA Chairman Tasks Monarchs.

In a bid to end the raging soot pandemic in the State, caused by illegal crude oil refining activities, the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has tasked traditional rulers in DELGA to submit names of all operators of the artisanal refining, popularly known as kpofire, to the Council or face government's sanction.

The Council Boss gave the directive, Tuesday, during a stakeholders meeting, held with monarchs of the nine communities of the LGA, at the Council Secretariat.

He directed the traditional rulers to immediately convene town hall meetings with their people in their respective Communities and communicate government's position on the menace, warning that the government would no longer fold its arms and watch the activities of few individuals, endanger the lives of the citizenry.

"Go home, convene a community meeting and talk to your people, sensitizing them on the danger in the continued activity of kpofire on the ecosystem, particularly, to human life.

"Those of them you can not talk to, submit their names to me to do the needful.

"If you fail to submit their names, it simply means that you are abetting the crime committed within your locality and government shall not hesitate to treat you as an accomplice," he warned.

The Council Chairman, who disclosed that the issue of Oil and Gas was on the Exclusive List and within the purview of the Federal Government, noted that the Rivers State Government, under Governor Nyesom Wike was doing a lot to ensure that the Federal Government fulfils its promise of setting up modular refineries in the Country to create jobs and curb the proliferation of illegal artisanal refining sites.

He added that while the governor's efforts were on, the recent order given to all Council Chairmen by the governor to clampdown on all bunkering activities in the State, was not only to end the economic sabotage on the nation, but was also in the best interest of the helpless masses, who were daily deluged with soot droppings in their homes and premises.

Hon. Williams stated that the Governor, being a compassionate and proactive leader, decided to take the step, in order to protect the lives of Rivers people, who were daily exposed to respiratory diseases, due to the soot in the atmosphere.

"The Governor is working assiduously to ensure that the modular refineries, promised by the Federal Government, are set-up, but before that is achieved, he can not fold his arms and watch the illegal activities kill Rivers people," he added.

The LGA Chief Executive apprised that the meeting with the traditional rulers would continue with other stakeholders in the LGA, including the security operatives, in order to permanently address the menace.

Speaking on behalf of the monarchs, Chairman of DELGA Traditional Rulers Council and Nwaomema (Amanyanabo) of Bukuma, HRH King Stephen Jeremiah Tobins, Akee X, commended the Rivers State Governor and the Council Chairman for taking the bold Initiative to address the scourge.

The Monarch, who stated that the issue of kpofire was a great threat to Rivers people, assured that the traditional institution would support the government by properly sensitizing their people on the need to look for better means of livelihood, rather than engaging in activities that endanger the lives of everyone, including theirs.

DELGA Chairman A True Replica Of Governor Wike–Rivers Deputy Governor
•••Commissions Chief Pedro Memorial Hall
•••Says "Only PDP Council Chairmen Are Performing"

The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Her Excellency, Dr. Mrs Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has eulogized the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, describing him as a true replica of Governor Nyesom Wike.

She stated that the Council Chairman had by his performance within the last 100 days in office, shown that he is a good fellower of the footsteps of Gov Wike in the delivery of quality and people-oriented projects.

Dr. Banigo, who spoke, Saturday, during the official Commissioning Ceremony of the Chief Amabibi Don Pedro Memorial Hall in Bakana, apprised that only Council Chairmen under the control of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were Performing, despite the harsh economy of the country.

"Today, only Council chairmen sponsored by our party, PDP, are the ones performing, particularly the Degema Local Government Chairman, even though we hear there is no money in the country.

"He is working and following the footsteps of our workaholic Governor, the Mr. Quality Projects; Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, that is why we call him 'Wike's Son Number One.'

She expressed optimism that if the Council Chairman could perform this much in just 100 days in office, his administration would do much more for the people of the LGA as it continues on the saddle.

The Deputy Governor stated that the people of DELGA were fortunate to have a Council Chairman who loves his people and is working tirelessly to unite the party and the communities in the LGA.

"Today, we are still celebrating his first 100 Days in office with so many projects littered across the LGA, imagine what he would do as he continues.

"We are grateful to God for giving us a Chairman, who loves his people and is doing everything to unite the party and the various communities," she added.

Dr. Banigo thanked party and community leaders in Bakana for maintaining peace in the area, stressing that only a peaceful community would attract development.

She emphasized that politics should bring about, unity, peace and development, warning that any political party that fails to promote the above ideals should not be entrusted with the people's mandate.

Commenting on the newly built edifice, the deputy governor noted that it was first of its kind, as it was very unique and iconic.

She stated that the Wike-led administration meant well for the Kalabari people, that was why it commenced the historic Trans-Kalabari Road Project, which would be completed within next year, as well as embarking on several other projects in Kalabari land, including the soon-to-be commissioned Ultramodern Secondary School in Bakana.

The first female deputy governor in Rivers State, while drumming support for the administration of the Council Chairman, urged the people to remain resolute in their support for the PDP, as that was the only party that would deliver without excuses.

Earlier, a Second Republic politician and Chief in Pedro's Compound, Chief Hon. Levy Braide, disclosed that he and others recently ditched their former party; the APC for the PDP, owing to the superlative performances of the Council Chairman at the LGA and Governor Wike at the State levels, adding; "now we have what to campaign with."

Chief Levy Braide, who represented Degema Constituency in the State Assembly and later became Commissioner for Works in the Chief Melford Okilo administration, expressed joy that what he had planned to do for the compound over 40 years ago, but failed to achieve, had been accomplished by Hon. Michael John Williams–a proud son of the compound, in just about three months of his administration.

He added; "the projects we are seeing everywhere across Degema today is a clear statement that Michael John Williams is the David that God ordained to give Bakana and the entire Degema LGA a facelift."

While thanking the governor for commencing the first phase of the Trans-Kalabari Road, Chief Levy Braide, appealed to the governor to kindly consider Bakana and Ogurama communities in the second phase, as according to him, the people were experiencing great difficulty accessing their communities, especially as they have to spend several hours struggling with tankers along the Abonnema Wharf road at a great risk to their lives.

He added that in the alternative, a pontoon system could be established by the State Government with internal roads, to address the avoidable losses of lives due to boat mishaps.

Also speaking, Chairman of the PDP in the LGA, Hon. Peter Abbey stated that the historic project was an attestation that PDP made the right choice in fielding Michael John Williams.

Bakana Ekine Sekiapu House A Legacy Project, Says Damiete Miller
••• Describes DELGA Chairman As A Worthy Son Of Governor Wike

The Honourable Commissioner for Power in Rivers State, Hon. Damiete Herbert Miller, has described the newly Commissioned Kalabari Ekine Sekiapu Society House of Bakana as a legacy project of the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams.

The Commissioner made the assertion, Saturday, during the Commissioning ceremony of the newly built edifice in Bakana.

Damiete Miller, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, while commending the Council Boss for his foresightedness, described the Council Chairman as a worthy son of the Rivers State Governor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike.

He dismissed insinuations that the project was fetish, maintaining that it was significant, as it symbolizes the rich culture and tradition of the Kalabari people.

While declaring his intention to join the group, the Commissioner for Power urged the Kalabari people to embrace their culture and stop referring to what was bequeathed to them by their forebears as fetishism, adding that the project has restored the dignity of the Ekine Society.

He noted that the last time the LGA commissioned projects in various communities was during his time as a Councillor in 1999, adding that the Chairman had performed creditably well.

"I said during the campaigns that the Egyptians we see today, we shall see them no more, and Michael John Williams thank you very much, you have not disappointed me.

"Only 100 days in office and we can count five projects and more are still on the way.

"Mr. Chairman I don't think you have any reason not to perform as much as you are performing, because a lion can not give birth to a dog.

"You can not be a Chairman under Wike, who is a performing governor, acknowledged even by the opposition parties as Mr. Quality Project, and not also be a performing Chairman. You are truly a worthy son of Governor Wike," Hon. Miller stated.

In his appreciation, Head of the Ekine Sekiapu Society of Bakana, Chief Dr. Mpaka Gogo-Abite Iyalla, while thanking the Chairman for preserving the culture of the Kalabari people, described the project as historic.

The Ekine Alabo, who noted that the LGA Chief Executive was following the good footsteps of his boss, Governor Wike, in projects execution, clarified misconceptions about the group.

"Kalabari Ekine Sekiapu is not a religious organization. It is not a secret society. It is not a pagan society; it is the tradition of the people in Kalabari, open to all males.

"It is a traditional thing, done all over the world. Even the people who brought Christianity have their own tradition and they maintain it," he noted.

On his part, the member representing Degema Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA), Hon. Anthony Soberekon, commended the Council Chairman for his developmental strides, adding that the Council Boss had made a remarkable difference in local government administrations.

"I have been in office since 2019 and as I speak to you, there is a big difference that I have seen in the local governments I have visited. Michael John Williams is an exception," Hon. Soberekon said.

The lawmaker noted that his Community; Bille, was the first beneficiary of the administration, which provided them security boats to combat sea pirate attacks along their waterways, just within two weeks in office.

Hon. Soberekon added that the Chairman had done what he would be remembered for, urging leaders to emulate him by remembering their people when they are in office.

"It is good that when you are in office, you remember your own Community and do something so that tomorrow when you are no longer there, if you are walking along the streets, your shoulders will be high and people will point at you and say this is the man that did this.

"Michael, you have written your name in marbles in Bakana.

"And I ask, if in 100 days you are able to carry out these projects, it means that in three years there will be so many projects that would be Commissioned in Degema LGA," he added.

In his reaction, the Executive Chairman stated that the project was informed by his desire to restore and preserve the cultural heritage of the Kalabari people.

He averred that the Ekine Society are custodians of the laws, culture and values of the people, which even the Amanyanabo (King) and chiefs of every Kalabari Community belonged.

The Council Boss likened the Ekine Sekiapu Society to the Supreme Court, where all forms of disputes in the community were brought for resolution, adding that it is the identity of the Kalabari people that must be upheld and showcased to the world.

He noted that having done some projects in various communities of the LGA within his first 100 days in office, his administration would continue to do more, up to the last day as Chairman of Council, adding that; "Degema money must be used to develop our LGA."

Hon. Williams thanked Governor Wike and the people of Degema LGA for giving him the opportunity to serve, pledging to continue to do his best to leave an enduring legacy.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of an Award of Excellence to the Executive Chairman as 'Ibiyekoribo 1 of DELGA' by the Israel Oriye Royal Production, in recognition of his trailblazing achievements.

The occasion was carnival-like and had a mammoth crowd of people in attendance like a sea of heads.

Guests were well entertained, as there were cultural and masquerade displays by different groups, including the Kalabari Ekine Sekiapu Society of Bakana, Abonnema, Buguma and Ogurama.

Present at the historic occasion were; the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, his Vice, Hon. Mrs. Maureen Obuba Harry, Commissioner for Power, Hon. Damiete Herbert Miller, member of RSHA, Hon. Anthony Soberekon and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth Development Dr. Roland Obed-Whyte.

Others were; former Chairman of Rivers State Secondary School's Board, Chief Hon. David Briggs, former Managing Director of Rivers State Microfinance Agency (RIMA), Dr. Ipalibo Sogules, DELGA PDP Chairman, Hon. Peter Abbey, former Deputy Mayor of Port Harcourt City Council, Hon. Alphine Whyte and Director-General of the Michael John Williams Campaign Team, Barr. Michael Ekineh.

I'll Not Disappoint Degema People, Council Chairman Assures
••• As Hon. Pleasant Braide Inaugurates Ogurama Footbridge, Concrete Pavement
•••Describes Council Boss As Governor Wike's Replica

The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has assured that his administration would not disappoint the good people of Degema LGA.

The Chairman gave the assurance, Thursday, during the Commissioning ceremony of the Ogurama Footbridge and Concrete Pavement, constructed by his administration.

He stated that his emergence as Chairman of Council was a divine act of God, adding that he would embark on projects that would impact positively on the lives of his people, inline with the developmental blueprint of Governor Nyesom Wike.

While assuring that his administration would execute more projects in all Communities of the LGA, he urged them to remain steadfast in their support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that "PDP is the way.

"I tell myself on a daily basis that I will not disappoint Degema people. I say it in my closet and in the open.

"I promised during the campaigns that I will replicate what my father, the governor, is doing in the State by turning Degema to a construction site.

"People doubted us, but thank God that today they are seeing the evidence.

"We shall do more. We shall sign our signature in all communities of the LGA."

While reeling out some achievements of his administration, he apprised that his administration had executed projects in five of the nine communities of the LGA within his first 100 Days in office, assuring that by April 2022, the remaining four communities would feel his impact.

On the request by the Ogurama Community for more projects, the Council Boss appealed for patience, noting that after going round all communities of the LGA, he would return to Ogurama Community.

'At the appropriate time, we will visit all the communities and return back to Ogurama," he assured.

On the issue of electricity, the Council Chairman stated that having restored power in some parts of the LGA, efforts were on to ensure that electricity is restored to other parts before December.

In his speech, the Guest of Honour at the occasion, Hon. Pleasant Braide, described the Council Chairman as a replica of Governor Nyesom Wike.

Hon. Pleasant Braide, who Commissioned the project, commended the Council Chairman for having his people at heart, noting that it was necessary for governments at all levels to touch the lives of people, no matter how small.

While likening the Council Boss as a man in the mold of Governor Wike, the former Council Chairman and leader of the PDP in the LGA, Hon. Pleasant Braide maintained that PDP is the way and Gov. Wike is the light that lights the way, boasting that no other political party could match the PDP in the LGA and at the State levels, owing to its many achievements.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Ogurama Council of Chiefs, Chief Hon. Ben Orugbani thanked the Council Chairman for what he described as a historic feat, adding that never in the history of the community had it experienced such a monumental development.

He noted that the Council Boss had made history by being the first Chairman to do so much for his people within 100 days in office.

"Today we are witnessing a historic feat. Never in the history of Ogurama have we seen this type of visitation and Commissioning.

"Ogurama is blessed to have a Chairman that saw our plight and said to himself that Ogurama is part of my constituency and had done us this good.

"He is very observant. He came here for a campaign. And after the campaign, we were escorting him back when he saw an old woman that nearly fell and as a sympathetic Chairman, he said in his heart that he would address that challenge.

"Mr. Chairman, you have made history as the first Chairman that has come to Ogurama, campaigned and within three weeks in office, you called the Ogurama Council of Chiefs, elders and women to your office and showed us the prototype of the Footbridge, requesting our approval to immediately commence work and today we are here to commission it.

Chief Orugbani also used the occasion to appeal to the Council Boss to amongst other things; rehabilitate the Community Town Hall, Primary and Secondary Schools and Health Centre.

In his contribution, the Chairman, Community Development Committee (CDC) of Ogurama, Comrade Harmony Douglas, described the project as a record-breaking feat, being the first of its kind in Ogurama.

He noted that chairmen had come and gone but none had remembered Ogurama, both in terms of infrastructural development and political appointments like the Hon. Michael John Williams administration had done for the community, adding; "when the righteous rule, the people rejoice."

Highpoint of the event was presentation of gift by the Ogurama Council of Chiefs to the Executive Chairman and cultural display by various groups.

The Commissioning ceremony was well attended by dignitaries and stalwarts of the PDP including the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, his Vice, Hon. Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Chairman at the Council headquarters, Wednesday, Chairman of DPF, Dr. Oteiva Mokie Frank, noted that the Chairman had justified his election as Chairman of Council, through his numerous people-oriented projects littered across the LGA.

"Judging from the steps you have taken as Chairman, we are happy to say that the people of DELGA did not make a mistake by putting you in the saddle of the local government as the Chief Executive.

"The actions you have taken so far have shown that you came prepared to give the good people of the local government purposeful and eventful leadership.

Rivers Youth Commissioner Showers Encomiums on DELGA Chairman
•••Describes Him As "A Round Peg In A Round Hole"
•••As Council Boss Reels Out Youth Empowerment Programmes

The Rivers State Commissioner for Youths, Hon. Ohia Prince Obi, has showered encomiums on the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, for his vision in the rapid development and empowerment of youths of the LGA.

Speaking at a One-Day Advocacy & Town Hall Meeting for Youths in DELGA, organised by the Rivers State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in conjunction with the Degema Local Government Council, Monday, the Youth Commissioner described the Council Boss as a round peg in a round hole.

He said the LGA Chief Executive is not just a youth friendly Chairman, but a youth that is doing the needful for his peers, adding that he is a visionary leader with content.

"I have no option than to shower encomiums on your local government Chairman, not just because he is a Youth; but because he is visionary; he has content and he has the political sagacity to drive down the content to the people.

"We had a one-on-one interaction and I discovered that he is a round peg in a round hole.

"Chairman I want to thank you for your vision. I want to thank you for your stance. I want to thank you for agreeing to be the leader that leads from behind," he stated.

The Commissioner for Youth lamented that most youths are pained, agonized and feeling rejected, not because they don't have contents to be useful, but because they were in search of unavailable platforms to showcase their contents.

He thanked the Council Boss for his vision for the youths of DELGA, calling on other LGA chairmen to emulate him.

"I want to plead with you to hold firm on all that you have said to us that you have in stock for the youth.

"You have told us that immediately after your 100 Days in office, you intend to go into proper youth investment. And for this youth investment, you are thinking about skills training. Trainings that have the potency of driving the youths from the streets to the markets.

"You whispered to us that you have intention of building entrepreneurs in Degema Local Government Area.

"You also whispered to us that you have the intention of giving business support grants to the youths of Degema LGA," he added.

Hon. Ohia Prince Obi expressed hope that by the time the LGA and the State Governments exhaust their packages, the issues of unemployment will be eradicated, as hitherto idle youths of the LGA will be taking off the streets and gainfully engaged.

While urging the Youths to build content and character in themselves, he noted that the Rivers State Government is poised at ensuring that Rivers youths get a better and larger chunk of whatever programme or project it is embarking on, adding that all the infrastructural development carried out by the government is youth-focused.

Earlier the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams had noted that the event was very apt, enjoining youths of the area to shun social vices.

He warned that for the youth of today to enjoy a better tomorrow, they must avoid the vices of drugs, rape, kidnappings, amongst others, which will ultimately land them in prison and ruin their future.

The Council Boss implored the youths to contribute meaningfully to the development of society, assuring that as a government, his administration will provide the enabling environment for the youth to thrive.

He apprised that his administration will soon embark on skills acquisition programmes for the youths, appealing that when starter packs and equipment are given, no one should go on and sell them off, but judiciously utilitize them for their own benefits.

The Chairman, who thanked Governor Nyesom Wike for being a youth friendly governor and a role model to Degema people, equally stated that his administration in keeping with the governor's standard in youth empowerment and development, appointed over 98 percent of youths as cabinet members of the government.

He urged the youths of DELGA to sustain their support for the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), because they have their interest at heart.

Present at the event were; the Delga Council Boss, Hon. Michael John Williams, Rivers State Commissioner for Youth, Hon. Ohia Prince Obi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth Development, Dr. Roland Obed-Whyte and Rivers State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Amb. Chijioke Ihunwo.

Others include; President-General of the Kalabari Youth Council, Amb. Ipalibo Madodoye, NYCN Coordinator of DELGA, Comrade Isobeye Bille, Directors in the Ministry of Youths, top functionaries of the local government Council, amongst others.

PoliticsA Communique Issued By The Reps Of The Four Non Kalabari Kingdoms In Degema LGA by willele(op): 2:37pm On Sep 13, 2016
The present Degema local govt area is made up of nine communities with seventeen wards. These autonomous communities are bakana, tombia, obuoma(harrys town), ke, old bakana,(oguruama), Degema, Usokun- degema, bille and bukuma-agum. While the first five are kalabari communities, the last four are non-kalabari communities. In a well attended extra-ordinary meeting of the four non kalabari kingdoms in Delga on sunday July 24, 2016, the following observations were carefully noted after a thorough analysis of the issues at stake whose central theme was/is the political marginalisation of the for non kalabari kingdoms in Delga by their compatriots/neighbours. OBSERVATION 1. That from 1981-2015, ten elected chairmen had piloted the affairs of the Delga council. and none was from the non kalabari kingdom see the list below. 1 Ibifuro (buguma) 1981-82. 2. Sokari quakers dokubo ( Abonema) 1985-89. 3. Prince benibo (soku) 1991. 4. Given braude (bakana) 1992. 5. Daobu Harry (obuama) 1996.6. Betterland Davies (Tombia) 1998. 7. Pleasant Braide (bakana) 1999-2002. 8. Tonye philmore (bakana) 2004-2007. 9. Abiye Davies ( tombia) 2007-2010. 10. Daddy pokima (tombia) 2010-2015. All from kalabari extractions. If the marginalisation of the non kalabari by their kalabari neighbours in Delga as exposed by the list above is disappointing, disquieting and a disservice. The revelation by the list below is not only disquieting but also disempowering and destructive. Elected and appointed office holders into local/state/federal government positions from degem local government area(1999-2010). Sir Dr Peter Odili's tenure (1st cabinet) 1999-2003. 1. Hon eldred T C Braide commissioner RS civil service commission from bakana. 6 Mr iboroma D harry special adviser on culture and tourism from obuama. 7. Mr ben orugbami commissioner RS civil service commission from old bakaana and 8. Mr elias Davies pdp chairman degema LGA from bakana. In the present Rivers state government. Bakana (kalabari) alone is represented politically in four strategic establishments. These include civil service commission ( hon Tonye philmore), local government service commission (hon pleasant braide), Rivers state microfinance bank(mr ipalibo sogules) nd governing council" ignattius Ajuru university of Education ( prof. Victor omuaru) board member. Other kalabari communities in Delga that re politically relevant in the present dispensation are obuama (Dr mrs ipalibo harry Banigo deputy governor, tombia (hon doctor farah dagogo RSHA member, old bakana/ oguruama ( hon. Damiete herbert miller commissioner for social welfare and rehabilitation. The only exception to the rule is from degema town non kalabari (hon Engr Mrs Felicity ovai an officer. Road maintenance agency. At the local government (delga) level. Caretaker chairmanship revolves among Ke+kalabri (hon barr Tmunotein Asobari! Buguma+kalabari (asalga) hon Tonye tyger and bakama+kalabari hon Agiobu fubara. 2. That even in other political positions, whether through election or appointment. Like membership of the federal House of reps. State house of assembly. Commissioners, chairmen and members of the numerous bords that abound in the state, the four non+klabari in delga were abandoned to their fate. However. Some few sporadic exceptions were recorded who after thorough scrutiny are found to either have some sprinkling of kalabari blood in their veins or some externl forces forced these exceptional down the greedy throats of our baneful brother. Some of these exceptions include hon Engr mrs Felicity Okpete Ovai and Hon mrs Emily solomon who were appointed by sir Dr Peter Odili, the then governor of River Stte who refuse to be negatively influenced by the selfish politics of our kalabari brothers in delga. For the occupation of the delga chairmanship seat only one from the non klabari kingdom had been exceptionally lucky. Even though he functioned only as caretaker committee chairman. He was late kelsey lambert from degema who was blackmailed out of office with a barrage of ethnic sponsored spurious allegations nd petitions. R. That from the few highlighted treacherous treatment, injurious injustice and discriminatory acts ( both overt and covert) meted out to the non-kalabari compatriots in Delga. We have come to the unavoidable conclusion that there is. Criminal conspiracy by the despotic kalabri politicians in delga to compel their non-kalabari counterparts to commit political harakiri by denying them of all the jucy political pies that accrue to the LGA. .4. That it is indisputable fact that both in size(land mass) and populatio (voting strenght), the four non+kalabari communities far outsize and out number the kalabari communities in delga. This simply means that the former has a sperior electoral value than the latter. 5. That as per qulificaation, that is educationally, it only amounts to stating the obvious that the indigens of the non kalabari communities are as qualified for every political position in delga, Rivers state and Nigeria as their counterparts in the kalabari communities in Delga. OUR PRAYERS. 1. The politically negleted people of degema, Usokun,Bille and bukuma in delga do hereby plead with our "talk and do" governor chief Barr Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (CON) to please take a hard look at the indignities we had suffered, and are still suffering, in the coarse and cruel hands of our kalbari "brother" in delga and urgently do something to reverse this ugly trend in the interest of "justice", fairness and equity, the foundational tripod on which our great party, PDP stands "gidigbally". 2. The Apex committee in delga as presently constituted is negatively skewed against the interests of the Non+kalabari communities and should therefore be re+organised to serve not only the parochil interest of the kalabari but lso of the non+kalabaris in delga. 3. We appeal to the governor to please use his good office to appoint credible sons and daughters of the four non+kalabari communities in delga into positions of trust in order to give the people a sense of belonging. 4. The representatives of the four Non+kalabari communities in delga are eagerly looking forward to meeting with the impartial, responsible and responsive governor, if he so pleases, at a venue and date to be fixed by him where we caan have the opportunity to dialogue extensively with him on the way forward for the aggrieved "Delga Four" communities in particular and the degema LGA in general. Finally, we hereby state unequivocally that we have the unflinching confidence in the abilty of our impartial, law+abiding and God fearing governor to amicably resolve all the issues we have painstakingly articulated in this communique. 1.
