The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, Monday, flagged-off the construction of a befitting Town Hall for the people of Degema Town, as part of the fulfilment of his social contract with the people of the LGA.

The Council Boss, had during his electioneering campaigns, promised to leave indelible footprints in all communities of the LGA, by executing people-oriented projects in them.

This solemn promise, the DELGA Sheriff has fulfilled in almost all communities of the LGA, despite the scarce resources at his disposal, which is very unprecedented in the annals of politics in DELGA and has endeared him to his people, who regard him as a trailblazer, for changing the past ugly narrative.

Speaking at the Palace of the Onu-Onyan Ekein of Degema, the Council Chairman commended the people of Degema Town, for their peaceful disposition and support to his administration, reiterating his administration's continued commitment towards improving the living condition of the people of DELGA.

While expressing gratitude to God for enabling him to fulfil his promises, the Council Boss stated that those who expressed doubts in his ability to fulfil his promises have been left bewildered.

He noted that his administration had earlier fulfilled its promise of appointing sons and daughters of the community into the Council, amongst other things.

The DELGA Sheriff, while also calling for further support from community members for the Town Hall project, added that the project would engage youths of the area as direct labour and would be completed and commissioned in December.

In his speech, the Onu-Onyan Ekein of Degema Town, HRH King (Dr) Reuben Zachariah Amos, Peika 7, thanked the Council Chairman for including Degema Town in his developmental agenda.

He stated that the people of Degema were peace loving and would continue to support his administration to move the LGA to greater heights, while also calling for further collaboration between the Council and the traditional institution.

The Council Chairman was thereafter led by the King and his Council of Chiefs to the site, provided by the community, for the construction of the Town Hall, where the chairman performed the groundbreaking ceremony.

DELGA Chairman Extols Governor Wike On Commissioning Of Community Secondary School, Obuama
•••Says Kalabari Has Never Fared Better From Previous Administrations

The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams has extolled the Rivers State Governor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike for the construction and commissioning of the ultramodern Community Secondary School, CSS, Obuama, in Degema LGA.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the edifice with a state-of-the-art facilities, Friday, the Council Chairman noted that the people of Degema and indeed Kalabari were very grateful to the governor for all that his administration had done for them, both in terms of infrastructure and human capacity development.

He stated that since the inception of the Wike administration, the governor has taken deliberate steps to better the living condition of the Kalabari people, adding that the people had never had it this good from previous administrations.

The Mayor of Kalabari, who went on to list some projects executed by the governor, including the ongoing Trans-Kalabari Road, assured the governor of the continued support of the Kalabari people.

In his speech, Governor Wike, who thanked his deputy, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, for bringing the deplorable state of the secondary school to his attention, directed the Ministry of Special Projects to immediately design two hostel accommodations for the male and female students within two weeks.

He stated that his administration had been busy since this week, showcasing what it was doing in the tertiary and basic education, as against criticisms that he was only constructing roads, disclosing further that his administration would soon go into the health sector.

The governor, who expressed satisfaction that his administration had touched all sectors in the state, explained that his huge investment in road construction was due to the fact that roads attract development.

On his part, the Special Guest of Honour and former Governor of Ekiti State, H.E. Ayodele Fayose, commended Governor Wike for his good works in the State, adding that posterity would be kind to him.

He stated that the governor, through his good works, had shown that it was possible to bring the impossible to bear, making an average Rivers man to be proud to hail from the State.

He eulogized Governor Wike as a man with a good heart and will to accomplish, love and support others.

Mr. Fayose, while advising the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to be circumspect of the people around, stated that most of them do not mean well for the party, describing them as "enemies of the throne."

"A lot of people surrounding the throne are enemies of the throne.

"A lot of people surrounding the throne have one axe to grind with somebody and they take it to where they are not supposed to take it.

"There is no living being in this party and outside this party that would not acknowledge your contribution to this party. You are the soul of this party," Fayose stated.

While warning that no one rises up by pulling down their leaders, Mr. Fayose lamented that the very people that Governor Wike helped to build, were the same set of people that were doing everything to pull him down, assuring that his good works would not go unrewarded.

He expressed shock that the people who stood firm by the PDP, when even sitting governors were decamping, were today being made enemies by people who do not like the truth, urging that there was still time for the party to unite, in order to boost its chances of clinching victory.

The former governor, who expressed confidence that the party would unite because it needs unity to be able to win the elections, however, called on Atiku Abubakar to do the needful by honouring his words.

He appealed to the people around the PDP Candidate to allow the party to win the election, because no one celebrates victory until it is won, praying God to give Atiku Abubakar the grace to lead the party.

The edifice has the following; 2-Blocks of 2-Storey buildings containing 12 Classroom blocks of 30 students' seating capacity, well furnished ICT laboratory with computers, well furnished library, 1-Block of 4 Science laboratories, 1-Storey of Administrative Building with Academic and Non-academic Staff rooms, 1-Storey building of 12 Classrooms, Staff quarters containing 2 units of 3-Bedroom flats detached, 4 units of 2-Bedroom flats, 1-Storey building of 3 units of 1-Bedroom flat on First Floor and 6 self contain apartments ensuite on the Ground Floor.

It was a gathering of sea of heads, as multitude of people thronged Degema, the administrative headquarters of Degema Local Government Area for the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) Permanent Voters' Cards (PVC) Collection Sensitization Rally.

The event, which was used to sensitize and mobilize the people of Degema LGA and by extension, the people of the State, attracted the crème de la crème in Rivers State, including its Deputy Governor and Rivers West Senatorial District Candidate, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, Rivers PDP Governorship Candidate, Amaopusenibo Siminialayi Fubara, amongst scores others.

Addressing the mammoth crowd at the event, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, commended the Executive Chairman of Degema LGA, Hon. Michael John Williams and the leadership of the GDI and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for working harmoniously to keep the party afloat in the LGA.

He noted that the gathering was not for political reason, but to sensitize the people to fully collect their PVCs and keep them safe, to use them at the right time.

Sir Fubara added that the people of Degema LGA do not need to be told which party to vote for, because they know better, the way to go.

"Our mission here is very simple. We are not asking you to vote here, because we know that when it gets to the time of voting, you know what to do.

"We are done with registration; it is now time for collection, so our duty here is to ensure that every PVC belonging to GDI and PDP members from Ward 1 to Ward 17 in Degema, are collected.

"We are not campaigning, we are only here to encourage our supporters, who have stood with us, even in the face of the political drama, when people are saying that GDI is no longer in this axis of the State.

"We have come here today to see with our own eyes and I can tell you that I am seeing 'sand sand' (mammoth crowd) here, which means that GDI and PDP are fully on ground in Degema LGA," Sim Fubara stated.

He commended the elders and leaders of the LGA for working in synergy and supporting the GDI to stand strong, praying God to continue to bless and strengthen Degema LGA.

He expressed confidence that the people of Degema LGA would elect credible candidates, who would follow the footsteps of Governor Nyesom Wike, adding that the governor had performed creditably well.

Also speaking, Leader of the PDP in DELGA and former Chairman of the LGA, Hon. Pleasant Braide, who commended Governor Wike for doing so much for the LGA, assured that Degema would deliver the PDP in 2023, as it had never lost any election in the LGA since 1999.

On his part, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Engr. Emeka Woke, stated that telling the people of Degema LGA to collect their PVCs was like preaching to the already converted, as according to him, "the LGA is fully and totally Simplified."

He berated some group of people, who claimed to have endorsed a particular governorship candidate under the guise of South-South elders and leaders, whereas their make-up was just from one ethnic nationality, out of the several states of the region.

Chief Woke, while urging the people of Kalabari not to allow themselves to be used by political jobbers, noted that the era of ethnic politics were over, assuring that the Governorship Candidate of the PDP, Sir Siminialayi Fubara would carry every interest in the State along.

In his solidarity speech, the President-General of GDI, Chief Hon. Bright Amaewhule, declared that GDI is alive and very much on ground in Degema LGA, urging members to not only obtain their PVCs, but to ensure that they use them to vote for candidates of their choices and follow up their votes until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) transmits them to their server.

"I am not here today to plead for anything, because the Chairman has done it all.

"Without having the comfort of office spaces, the duties that the officials should carry out will not be so effective. So I thank you for that.

DELGA Chairman Set To Commence Community Hall Project For Udekama Kingdom
••• Unveils Prototype
••• As Community Hails Council Boss For Changing Past Narrative

[b][/b]
In continuation of the fulfilment of his social contract with people of Degema Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, has concluded plans to commence the construction of a befitting Town Hall for the people of Udekama Kingdom in Ward 12 of Degema LGA.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with stakeholders of the community, comprising of chiefs, Community Development Committee (CDC), youth and women representatives, at the Council Secretariat in Degema, Monday, the Chairman apprised that the meeting was convened in order to seek the consent and approval of the community, before its commencement, inline with his administration's policy of consulting and involving community members in development projects and programmes of government.

He commended the community for their patience and steadfastness with his administration while projects were being sited in other communities, maintaining that his administration was committed to fulfilling its campaign promise of executing projects in all communities of the LGA.

He however took a swipe at some misguided persons, who rush to the social media to lampoon and abuse government for allegedly not embarking on projects in all communities of the LGA simultaneously, describing it as unrealistic, as no administration could achieve that, considering the availability of funds.

The Council Chairman stated that his love for the Communities and people of Degema LGA, motivates him to do what he is doing for them, adding that governments were expected to exist for the betterment of society.

"People often say, even to my hearing, that this chairman will leave office broke with a waterproof bag. But I tell them in all honesty that I am comfortable with my monthly take-home.

"We are not here to enrich ourselves, but to make Degema LGA better than we met it and that is partly why we are investing heavily in infrastructures in our various Communities," he stated.

The Council Boss, who informed the community of his plan for the community, however, asked them to nominate projects of their choice for consideration, if they preferred something else.

After the community representatives gave a nod for the construction of the Town Hall, the Council Chairman unveiled the prototype and asked them to provide a piece of land that is not a subject of litigation for the commencement of the project.

Responding, the Onu-Onyan Ekein of Udekama Kingdom, King (Dr.) Reuben Zachariah Amos, Peika 7, thanked the Council Chairman for his kind gesture to the people of the area.

Represented by Chief Oho-Oswo Francis, the traditional ruler commended the Chairman for changing the past narrative of the LGA, noting that he has done better than all past Chairmen of Council.

While particularly thanking the Chairman for appointing their sons and daughters into his administration, the traditional ruler promised that his people would continue to be of good conduct to engender peace in the LGA.

"We want to thank the Chairman for honouring his promise to us such as siting this project in our community, appointing our sons and daughters into his cabinet, amongst others, which has never happened in the previous regimes.

"So our chairman has started on a very good footing by siting this Town Hall in our community and we accept it in good fate and we say a big thanks to our chairman.

"We wish to promise our Chairman that we shall continue to be of good behavior, we will continue to conduct ourselves creditably and there will be no breach of the peace," he assured.

The community representatives later led the Council Chairman into the community, where a piece of land was shown to him to site the Town Hall.

Present at the meeting were the Council Chairman, Hon. Michael John Williams, representatives of the Council of Chiefs led by Chief Oho-Oswo Francis, CDC members, Councillor representing Ward 12, Hon. Sweiyi Moses, Supervisor for Agriculture, Hon. Tweneme Inengi, as well as youth and women leaders.

PoliticsDELGA Chairman Resolves Ogurama, Bakana, Shorelink Electricity Dispute by willele(op): 8:54pm On Aug 08, 2022
DELGA Chairman Resolves Ogurama, Bakana, Shorelink Electricity Dispute[sup][/sup]

Following the disputation between members of Ogurama Community and the Management of Stock Gap Oil & Gas Nigeria Limited (Shorelink), over the rerouting of the electricity line, connecting Ogurama and Bakana Communities of Degema Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, has intervened to resolve the issue.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting, which held at his office in Degema, Monday, the Council Chairman, who also doubled as a representative of Bakana, stated that it was necessary for both parties to make concessions, in order to achieve a headway.

He noted that though the rerouting project was expedient, in order to forestall a disaster, due to the regular friction and occasional damage of the pylons by large vessels, plying the Primrose Creek, the company should have however, officially communicated with the Ogurama people, as it was customary.

While stressing that communication gaps should be bridged at all levels of human interaction, the Council Boss apprised that it was because the community people were not informed of the development, that they accosted and arrested the boys that were seen on site dismantling the pylons.

"Those towers were mounted by the local government. And maybe due to might or sheer ignorance, you (Shorelink) failed to even notify the Council authority before dismantling the towers to reroute them.

"I was at home when I received a call from the community that they had apprehended some boys that were caught vandalizing the line, so I instructed that they should be handed over to the police for interrogation and prosecution.

"So after some moves and interventions, I finally met with the company management for the first time and we spoke and concluded with the assurance by the company that after the rerouting, the affected communities of Ogurama and Bakana would have sufficient electricity," he narrated.

He stated that needs assessment and community involvement must be achieved for any government or entity to successfully execute its programmes and projects, as such involvement would ensure ownership and participation.

He however, appealed to Ogurama people to let go their grievances, as the said project would mutually benefit the community and the company.

The Council Chairman used the occasion to commend the former Commissioner for Power, Hon. Damiete Herbert Miller, for his huge inputs in the electricity project.

As a means to encourage the rerouting project, the DELGA Sheriff disclosed that the Council would give some amount of money to the chiefs, elders, women and youths of Ogurama Community, whilst also encouraging the company to give whatever is due to the community, inline with their corporate social responsibility (CRS).

Reacting to the Chairman's intervention, the Chairman of Ogurama Council of Chiefs, Chief Ben Orugbani, commended the Chairman for his uncommon wisdom in resolving hitherto complex situations.

He disclosed that the crux of the matter was that the company had stopped the powering of the grid, supplying power to the affected communities for a couple of years, over safety concerns, but the community had proposed a submarine cable connection, which the company opposed with a rerouting alternative.

Chief Orugbani however stated that the community got agitated when the company commenced the rerouting project without recourse to the community, whose mangroves and bushes they were entering, thanking the chairman for brokering peace between both parties in a 'no victor, no vanquished' manner.

On his part, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Stock Gap Oil & Gas Nigeria Limited, Mr. Amala Nwosu, who thanked the Council Chairman for his intervention, noted that the company opted for the rerouting, in order to avoid a national disaster.

"We are rerouting the electricity project for the safety of the communities, farmers, fishermen and all that live and do business within that area.

"We don't want a coming vessel to clash with PHED cables across the water. If it happens, it would be catastrophic to this nation, it would be a national disaster, Nwosu stated.

The meeting which held at the instance of the Council Chairman, had in attendance members of the Ogurama Council of Chiefs, elders, women and youths representatives, as well as a delegation of the oil company.

PoliticsAbati's Invectives On Governor Nyesom Wike – The Puerile Diatribes Of A Politica by willele(op): 9:55am On Aug 05, 2022
ABATI'S INVECTIVES ON GOVERNOR NYESOM WIKE
– The Puerile Diatribes Of A Political 'Hallelujah Boy'

By Hon. Michael John Williams[sup][/sup]

The unprovoked outburst of erstwhile Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former President Goodluck Jonathan and media practitioner, Dr. Reuben Abati, where he threw caution to the wind, by attacking the person and office of the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, is to say the least, very unfortunate and unbecoming of a supposed veteran journalist

Abati, who should know better, as a supposed 'unteachable' journalist, chose to discuss personality, rather than issues.

He failed to separate his personal interest by dispassionately looking at the critical issues, raised by Governor Wike in his referenced statement by Abati that the Arise TV crew failed to ask pertinent questions to their Guest and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, during his recent interview.

Abati in his infamous outing, displayed the highest level of incivility, meddlesomeness, crudity and pettiness, in a sordid manner, most Nigerians viewed as a desperate move by a political 'hallelujah boy' (praise-singer) and self-appointed spokesman of Atiku, ostensibly to curry favour from him (Atiku) to be appointed a media spokesman.

Abati, the new volunteer spokesman of Atiku, who sadly lost his voice and failed to perform the role of a Presidential Spokesman, under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, when the likes of Lai Mohammed and the All Progressives Congress (APC) launched coordinated media propaganda to badmouth his administration, despite Dr. Jonathan's sterling achievements in all sectors of the economy, has now finally found his voice.

The same Reuben Abati, who lacked electoral value in 2019, worked against the overall interest of the PDP by conniving with his erstwhile associate, late Sen. Buruji Kashamu and conducted parallel primaries to emerge governorship and deputy governorship candidates respectively in Ogun State, but failed woefully in the general elections, trailing a distant fourth position in the following order;

1st: APC –241,670 votes

2nd: APM –222,153 votes

3rd: ADC –110,422 votes

4th: PDP –70,290 votes.

Reuben Abati, who refused to accept the candidacy of the PDP National Working Committee-backed Ladi Adebutu, but rather chose to rock the boat, lacks the capacity and moral justification to talk about a committed party man, like Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, whom he (Abati) acknowledged in his puerile diatribe that singlehandedly stood-by and rescued the party from the brinks of political oblivion, when many other fair-weather politicians, including Abati, either decamped, withdrew or lost their voices completely.

Governor Wike, who had been a faithful of the PDP since its formation in 1998, had repeatedly maintained his resolve to support any candidate that emerges from the party's primary election. And by the grace of God, he has remained committed to that assurance till date.

However, unfolding events in the party's post primary election, give the governor and other critical stakeholders, who genuinely love the PDP and wish it well, grave concern, as fifth columnists and other Interlopers are now scrambling to reap from where they did not sow, by doing everything within their whims and caprices, including sowing seeds of discord amongst party members.

Unlike Reuben Abati, who failed woefully to actualize his obvious lifelong deputy governorship ambition in Ogun State, His Excellency, Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, GSSRS, POS Africa, is a fulfilled politician, who is currently a second term governor, having previously served as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief of Staff in Rivers State Government and two times Chairman of Council in Obio/Akpor LGA of Rivers State.

He is a brave, courageous and outspoken leader, who is not only a force in the PDP and his home state, but equally commands a large pool of followership across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

In quick response to Abati's puerile enquiry of where Governor Wike was in 1985, when he purportedly started Journalism practice, Governor Nyesom Wike was at the period, grooming himself for leadership.

Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, as a strong pillar of the PDP has every right to express his feelings, and can not be cowed by fair-weather politicians like Reuben Abati, the political journalist.

The media as the fourth estate of the realm and watchdogs of the society, should be divorced from Abati's partisan politics and grandstanding.

Abati should come out and play full-time politics or practice Journalism with professionalism, by upholding its tenets of objectivism and responsibility.

The PDP and its Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar needs the support of every committed party member to win the 2023 elections, not the self-serving shenanigans of some political mercenaries.

As we gravitate towards the 2023 general elections, Atiku Abubakar should do the needful by urgently putting the PDP house in order and avoid the wrong Counsel of Ahithophels, before it is too late.

As a way of enhancing effective power supply in Degema Local Government Area, the Council Chairman, Hon. Michael John Williams, has adopted the prepaid metering system for the LGA.

Speaking when he played host to officials of the zonal electricity distribution company at his office in Degema, Tuesday, the Council Chairman stated that the new metering regime would eliminate issues of epileptic power supply and over-billing, as a result of estimated billing system.

Delga, Asalga, Others Partner Rivers Police Command To End Insecurity Along Emohua/Kalabari Road

Worried over the incessant spate of attacks by criminal elements along the Emohua/Kalabari Road, the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, alongside his counterparts, Hon. Onengiyeofori George, Hon. Rowland Sekibo and Hon. Dr. Chidi Lloyd of Asari-Toru, Akuku-Toru and Emohua LGAs respectively, have collaborated with the Rivers State Police Command, in order to contain the menace.

Conducting security operatives around the areas at the weekend, with a view to ascertaining flashpoints for adequate deployment, the DELGA Council Boss expressed confidence that the effort would be positive.

He noted that the security presence at the hotspots would send great shivers down the spines of the kidnappers, who terrorize commuters plying the road on regular basis.

Hon. Williams, who stated that the Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration prioritizes security in the State, added that the fruit of the synergy and security network, adopted for the area, would restore peace to the affected LGAs.

On his part, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Muhammed Shehu, assured that haven assessed the flashpoints, the State Police Command would deploy its personnel to properly police the area.

"We were instructed by the Commissioner of Police to come and assess the road and see where we can make deployment, in order to make the area peaceful.

"And we have seen all the exits, where these people (kidnappers) normally kidnap people and run into the bush with their victims.

"We assure you that we are going to give optimum security to cover these areas," DCP Shehu assured.

It would be recalled that following the unabating cases of attacks by gunmen along the Emohua/Kalabari Road, the four affected local government council chairmen had made concerted efforts to rid the area off criminal activities.

Governor Wike A Godsent To Rivers State–Delga Chairman

The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has extolled the virtues of the Rivers State Governor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, describing him as a Godsent to the State.

Speaking when he played host to a delegation from the Ministry of Education at his office in Degema, Wednesday, the Council Chairman stated that Governor Wike has been steadfast and unrelenting in his efforts at developing the State, despite being at the tail end of his administration.

He added that at a time when most of the governor's counterparts across the country were solely concerned about the politics of transition and 2023, Governor Wike had continued to commission and flag-off new projects to the chagrin of his traducers.

The LGA Chief Executive, who commended Governor Wike for his giant developmental footprints in Degema LGA, told the delegation that the LGA had never had it this good from the State Government, since its creation.

While thanking the governor for showing uncommon interest in the development of Degema people through his many projects like the model secondary schools in Bakana, Tombia and Obuama, as well as the Trans-Kalabari Road, amongst others, Hon. Williams prayed that Governor Wike's successor should follow his exemplary footsteps in his developmental agenda, for the advancement of the State.

He promised to support the Ministry of Education in whatever capacity that would be required, adding that Degema would always partner with programmes, championed by Gov Wike, geared towards improving the welfare of the people of the LGA and Rivers State in general.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Dr. Ovunda Ihunwo, stated that their mission to the LGA was to ascertain the condition of schools, with a view to improving them.

Dr. Ihunwo noted that the delegation, who were sent on the facility tour of the LGA at the instance of the Commissioner for Education, Prof Prince Chinedu Mmom, were on the visit to assess the needs of the government-owned schools, in terms of physical infrastructure as well as other challenges bedeviling the schools, inline with Governor Wike's blueprint in revamping the education sector.

"We know the kind of Governor we are working with. He is a man who has determined to keep working until his last day in office. So there is nothing like government is winding down; work is still at optimum.

"So that is why we are here to do some on-the-spot assessment of government schools," he stated.

He apprised that the team would submit its findings and recommendations to the Ministry of Education for necessary action, at the end of the assessment exercise, which he said was taking place across the State.

The team were later taken round on inspection by the Supervisor for Education in the LGA, Hon. Garrick Ibima Firstbury.

Members of the delegation include; Dr. Ovunda Ihunwo (Team Leader), Dr. Ezaale Okowa, Dr. Eme Budu Eme and Dr. Mombe Michael Ngongeh.

Rivers Deputy Governor, DELGA Chairman Endorse 'Made in Degema' Products
••• Commit To More Human Capacity Development

In a bid to encourage budding entrepreneurs amongst youths of the State, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Her Excellency, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo and the Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, have endorsed wares, produced by youths of Kalabari extraction, as part of a concerted effort, aimed at stemming the tide of unemployment and poverty amongst the teeming youth population.

This development followed the 'Product Exhibition and Auctioning' ceremony by participants of the second phase of the Skills Acquisition Programme, sponsored by the Deputy Governor of the State, in conjunction with the Redemption Ministries, for youths of the three Kalabari LGAs of Degema, Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru, in DELGA over two years ago.

Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, commended the participants for their diligence, pledging to continue to support them, in order to ensure that youths of the area were gainfully employed.

While noting that small and medium scale enterprises drive the economy of the world, Dr. Harry-Banigo commended the Rivers State Governor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike for creating the enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the State.

She added that owing to the governor's prudent management of resources, as seen in the construction of modern roads and bridges, hospitals, schools, tourists centres, amongst others, Rivers State has become an investment hub for investors, maintaining that; "Rivers State is the safest place to live and do business in Nigeria.

"I am very proud of what you have done and because of this, I will continue to support you," she stated.

The Deputy Governor however, took a swipe at the APC-led Federal Government for plunging the nation into its present state of 'poverty capital of the world,' despite their initial bogus promises of lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty, making the Dollar equal to the Naira, amongst others.

"The APC-led Federal Government told us that they would take many people out of poverty, but today, Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world.

"They told us that One Naira would be equivalent to One Dollar, but today, because the economy is so battered, all our professionals are emigrating in droves.

"Everywhere people are crying for security; from the North East, North Central, North West, everywhere is in turmoil," she lamented.

On his part, Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, thanked the Deputy Governor for her compassionate disposition towards the youths of the area, which he said, informed her decision to initiate the skills acquisition programme.

He disclosed that the participants were not only into shoemaking, but were equally building quality fibre glass boats, amongst other items, assuring that his administration would continue to partner and support initiatives, aimed at encouraging the youths to be self-reliant.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the Skills Acquisition Programme, Pastor Joseph Pettigrew, had commended the deputy governor and the Degema Local Government Council for the initiation, support and enabling environment throughout the first and second phases of the training programme.

He added that the trainees have been imparted with the requisite skills to be independent and also employers of labour, appealing for more support to enable them start up businesses of their own.

Also speaking on behalf of the participants, Mr. Nimi Ambassador, while expressing gratitude to the Deputy Governor for initiating the programme, as well as the Degema LGA for the humongous support given throughout the exercise, noted that the trainees have been empowered to be self-sufficient.

"Your Excellency, you have not only given us fish to eat, but you have taught us how to catch the fish and take care of ourselves and dependents," he admitted.

He also appealed for financial and material support to enable them put their skills to good use, as according to him; "practice makes perfect."

The Wares Exhibition featured purchasing of the 'Made in Degema' products by the Deputy Governor, the Council Chairman, the Vice Chairman, HLGA, among others.

Tributes, As DELGA Council Sends-Off Retired Senior Staff
••• Retirees Describe Gesture As Heartwarming, Unprecedented

It was a day of tributes and conviviality, as the authority of Degema Local Government Area, organized a special send-off ceremony to appreciate two top-ranking staff of the Council, who retired recently.

The retired senior staff; Mr. G. S. Nwikorga Esq. and Engr. Masi Gabriel Sam, were until their retirement last month, the Director of Administration & General Service/Head of Personnel Management (HPM) and Director of Works, Transport, Land and Housing respectively.

Speaking during the ceremony, which took place at the Council Secretariat, Thursday, the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, noted that the duo were both wonderful and dutiful staff, whose wealth of experience and invaluable contributions towards the development of Degema LGA would be greatly missed by the Council.

The Council Boss who was visibly moved by emotions stated that; "it is sad that these two brilliant souls are leaving us. It feels like a huge part of our body is being severed from us.

"You both supported and helped me to settle in properly upon my assumption of office, and it was through your firm support and cooperation that we were able to record the great feat of achievements that we have recorded so far."

He urged the new HPM, Mr. John Kamalu and Acting Director of Works, Mr. Nelson Owhor, to follow the good footsteps of the two retired senior staff and work cooperatively with the Executive for the overall interest of the LGA.

In his speech, the retired HPM, Mr G. S. Nwikorga Esq, commended the Council Chairman for changing the narratives in local government administration.

He noted that it was the first time, in his 31 years working experience, that he had seen a Council Chairman, appreciating retiring civil servants, adding that it was unprecedented.

"I have worked with several Council Chairmen; both substantive and caretakers in different LGAs, but you are an outstanding chairman, I must say.

"Incidentally, I commenced work in Degema about 31 years ago and I am ending it in the same Degema, but throughout my years of service, I have not seen this type of appreciation in all the LGAs I had previously worked," Mr. Nwikorga admitted.

While urging the Council workforce to cooperate with his successor for him to succeed, the former HPM appealed for forgiveness from all members of staff, whom he might have unknowingly offended in course of his service, noting that it was not deliberate, but due to exigency of service.

On his part, the retired Director of Works, Transport, Land and Housing, Engr. Masi Gabriel Sam, stated that it was heartwarming for the Council Chairman to deem it necessary to appreciate their years of service.

He added that the Council Boss had by his action, further shown that he is a caring, loving and thoughtful Chairman, whose humane disposition is always displayed in all his dealings.

While asserting that the Council Chairman had outperformed all his forebears through the delivery of quality projects, Engr. Sam expressed gratitude to Degema LGA, adding; "I am leaving a fulfilled man."

The convivial ceremony featured goodwill messages, presentation of gift items and rock and roll.

The occasion was well attended by the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, his Vice, Hon. Mrs. Maureen Obuba Harry, the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), Mr. Diebo Anabraba, directors and heads of the various ministries and departments as well as the rank and file of the Council workforce, top functionaries and appointees of the Council, amongst others.

Re: 2023: Why PDP Can Not Zone Presidency To The South–Farah Dagogo

_The Opinion Of A Loner_

The attention of the Degema Local Government Council has been drawn to an interview, published on pages 27-28 of The Nation's Newspaper of Saturday, March 19, 2022, wherein the member representing Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Farah Dagogo, amongst other things, opposed the Southern region's agitation for power shift as well as disclosed his governorship ambition in 2023.

Ordinarily, one would have ignored the said interview from a man, best described as a 'loner,' and treated it with the levity it deserved.

However, the Council Authority is forced to react to the unbecoming behaviour of one of its misguided sons, who rather than focus on his present job of lawmaking at the National Assembly, has shirked his primary responsibility to pursue his selfish ambition, even at the detriment of his South South region, whose interest should have been his principal interest.

Hon. Farah Dagogo in the said interview, threw caution to the wind and brazenly opposed the popular clamour of Nigerians, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), that the office of the Presidency be zoned to the Southern part of the Country.

He asserted that only one man from the North; Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, whom he described both as a Moses and a Messiah, had the magic wand to wrestle power from the APC.

This view is strictly personal to Hon. Farah Dagogo and therefore can not be seen to be the general view of members of the PDP and Nigerians at large.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, like any other party man, is eminently qualified to run for that exalted office, it is however premature, at this point in time, to canvass that opinion, or try to arm-twist the party to make that choice.

Even Governor Nyesom Wike, who had been inundated with calls by Nigerians to run for the presidency, due to his superlative performance, is yet to respond to that clarion call, which we earnestly pray he yields, because he had demonstrated uncommon courage and capacity to pull Nigeria out of the precipice, the APC-led Government had plunged it to.

However, the PDP is yet to zone the presidency to any part of the Country. And whatever decision the party decides to take in that regard, would remain an internal party affair, and should not bother non-party members and interlopers like Hon. Farah Dagogo, who had long ditched the party and had clearly stayed away from all affairs of the party for some years now.

It is curious that Hon. Farah Dagogo, who had completely distanced himself from all activities of the PDP since 2020, including the recent PDP National Convention, party/stakeholders meetings etal, suddenly comes out of the blue to play the devil's advocate.

Again, Hon. Farah Dagogo made a faux pas, when he inferred that the governorship of Rivers State has remained an Ikwerre affair. In fairness to the people of the Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality, elections in Rivers State had never been on the basis of zoning.

Aspirants from the various ethnic groups in the State had always jostled for the office of the governor, and the best man at the end of the day had always emerged.

For instance, in 1999, Dr. Peter Odili's main challenger was a Kalabari son, Chief Ebenezer Isokariari of the All Peoples Party (APP). In 2003, during Odili's reelection, he was also challenged by other people like Ohna Sergeant Awuse of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs.

In 2007, the late Senator Dr. I. S. Martyns-Yellowe came second in the PDP primary that brought in Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi as Candidate of the PDP and subsequent governor, after the famous Supreme Court ruling. The PDP in that election with Sir Celestine Omehia as its candidate was later challenged at the general elections by Prince Tonye Princewill of the Action Congress (AC) and others.

Again, in 2011, Amaechi's main challenger, amongst others, was Sir Celestine Omehia of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

In 2015, PDP aspirants alone were over 24, which later reduced to about 6 that participated in the primary election, wherein the current governor emerged as candidate and was again fiercely challenged by the candidate of the APC, Dr. Dakuku Peterside.

Finally, in 2019, candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Mr. Biokpomabo Awara; the adopted candidate of the APC also contested against Gov. Wike.

Only Hon. Farah Dagogo knows what he meant by "there is still a dark storm circling over Rivers State hatched by men who consider our state as their personal estate."

The Ikwerres, despite having the highest number of votes in the State, have never schemed to establish a fiefdom or hegemony, as inferred.

Aren't they as much as qualified like any other ethnic group in the State?
Why the fuss, acrimony and incitement against the Ikwerre people?

Rivers State is a cosmopolitan state and has long gone past the era of ethic politics.

What we need today is not an Ijaw, Ikwerre or Ogoni governor, but a governor of Rivers State that would carry every interest in the state along, just like Governor Nyesom Wike has done and is still doing.

Today, there is no local government area in Rivers State that you visit that you will not find various projects executed by Governor Wike administration.

It therefore smacks of hypocrisy and grandstanding, for Hon. Farah Dagogo, who for his inordinate ambition, scuttled the Turn-By-Turn gentleman agreement between Degema and Bonny, and usurped the latter of their second term opportunity in the House of Representatives, to now turn around and preach power rotation in the governorship of Rivers State.

Hon. Farah Dagogo's insatiable greed and ingratitude against Governor Nyesom Wike; his benefactor, who also in 2019 helped him to clinch the House of Representatives ticket, he currently occupies, clearly shows his level of ungratefulness and that has remained his albatross.

GOVERNOR WIKE'S CRIME AGAINST FARAH DAGOGO

Hon. Farah Dagogo's insatiable greed for power, led to his fallout with his erstwhile benefactor, whom he had spared no efforts to vilify.

It is public knowledge that Governor Wike's love for Hon. Farah Dagogo made the governor to give him the rare privilege of nominating a Commissioner, who is still serving in the State Executive Council since 2015.

Hon. Farah Dagogo, like Oliver Twist, still went ahead to demand the Chairmanship position of Degema LGA from the governor, where he had hoped to control the politics as well as the resources of the LGA through his stooges.

However, the governor this time around, turned down his request, with the explanation that Hon. Farah Dagogo was not the only politician in the LGA to take everything he so wanted.

But due to his love for him, Gov. Wike still went ahead to appoint Hon. Farah Dagogo's preferred Chairmanship candidate, in the said 2018 local government elections, as a Commissioner in the State Civil Service Commission. What more would the governor do for Hon. Farah Dagogo for him to show gratitude?

Today, apart from his bogus claims of sponsoring several bills at the same time at the National Assembly, none of which had been passed into law for the benefit of his constituents and Rivers State, Hon. Farah Dagogo's performance has been abysmal, with huge gap created between himself and his constituents, which is unprecedented in the Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency.

Governor Wike had maintained that the forthcoming governorship of Rivers State would not be zoned or given by sentiment to anyone, but would be based on the capacity and credibility of the person, as well as his acceptability by Rivers people.

Again, the governor restated his stance on the governorship of the State, during his Civic Reception, held in his honour by the Kalabari people to appreciate him for his goodwill towards them, in February 5, 2022, at Abalama, wherein he further advised the Kalabari people to unite and put their house in order, for them to achieve whatever ambition they had as a united people.

But of course, like the plethora of many State and party functions, Hon. Farah Dagogo was conspicuously absent at that historic Abalama occasion, and so missed the opportunity to hear first-hand from the governor and equally seize the opportunity to interact with his constituents at the occasion.

Now, if it is not a case of delusion, how could a man, who had long abandoned and betrayed his party, suddenly wake up and boast that he was the potential candidate of the PDP in Rivers State in 2023? If other party members behaved in the manner that he did, would PDP still be alive today?

What structure is he banking on within the party to actualize his ambition, if not hoping to hijack the party with the help of some highly placed individuals?

If Hon. Farah Dagogo desires to run for the office of the Governor of Rivers State, which is within his inalienable rights, he should boldly present himself to Rivers people, without going about casting aspersions on Gov. Wike, whom God singlehandedly used to bring him to the political limelight for two consecutive times, between 2015 and 2019, as a member of the State House of Assembly and currently as a member of the House of Representatives respectively.

Hon. Farah Dagogo is not a member of the PDP and the earlier he publicly declares his party that he had been clandestinely hobnobbing with, the better for him.

Rivers PDP is not for sale and cannot be hijacked by Hon. Farah Dagogo and his cohorts.

Continue To Support Governor Wike For More Development, Empowerment–DELGA Chairman Urges Bille Women
••• Discloses Plans To Empower Indigent Women
••• As Group Lauds Chairman's Unprecedented Performance

The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has urged women of Degema LGA to sustain their support for the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, in order for them to continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

He emphasized that the support for the governor should extend even to his future political decisions, as that according to him, would guarantee sustainability and continuity of the good governance, promoted by the PDP administration.

The Council Boss, who spoke, Tuesday, when he played host to members of the Bille Women Forum, Port Harcourt, who paid a courtesy call at the Council Secretariat in Degema, commended Bille Kingdom for being peaceful, adding that a peaceful people attract development.

Hon. Williams, while disclosing that his administration would soon embark on empowerment programmes to support women of the LGA in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), however maintained that beneficiaries of the scheme must be indigent rural dwellers, to boost the local economy.

"My empowerment programmes are strictly for the indigent and helpless people who are resident in the rural Communities.

"I shall personally scrutinize every name forwarded to me, in order to avoid a situation where comfortable and Port Harcourt-based individuals would hijack what was meant for the poor and helpless rural dwellers," he noted.

Earlier in her address, Chairman of the Bille Women Forum, Revd Mrs. Soibifa Igani, lauded the Council Chairman for his monumental achievements in office, describing him as a " vessel unto honour for the use of Degema LGA."

Revd Igani stated that the Chairman had shown uncommon love and compassion for the Bille kingdom since his administration came onboard.

She particularly thanked him for donating Surveillance speed boats to combat the perennial sea pirate attacks along the Bille waterways, as well as appointing Bille indigenes as Supervisor, Adviser and Special Assistant, amongst others, adding that such appointments were unprecedented in the annals of political appointments in DELGA.

The group however appealed to the Council Chairman to support the Forum in purchasing a bus, training of women in skills acquisition as well as issuing grants to boost economic ventures of Bille women.

Highpoint of the visit was presentation of an Award of Excellence to the Council Boss, in recognition of his "tireless contributions towards the Degema people and for his love for Bille Kingdom."

Stop Patronizing Quacks, Visit Health Centres For Your Safety, DELGA Chairman Urges Mothers
•••As He Flags Off Maternal Newborn, Child Health Week
•••Discloses Plans To Shutdown 3 Contaminated Water Sources, Provide Potable Ones In Bakana Over Cholera Outbreak

The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has urged pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to imbibe the habit of patronizing the Health Centres within their locality, rather than patronizing roadside quacks or self-medicating to minimize complications and deaths.

The Council Boss, who spoke, Wednesday, during the Flagoff of the Second Round of the Maternal, Newborn & Child Health Week (MNCHW) 2021, at the Council Secretariat in Degema, added that most health challenges, faced by pregnant women and their newborns were as a result of refusal by expectant mothers to see professionals, who not only properly examine them, but equally follow them up until they deliver safely.

While harping on the need for Antenatal care by pregnant mothers, the Council Chairman stressed that; "when you visit the Health Centres, they attend to both mother and the baby, so that when you give birth, both you and your baby will be safe.

"Most health challenges, faced by innocent children today could have been prevented, if you had obeyed the simple instruction of visiting the Health Centres and utilizing the free services provided by the Government.

"My father, our dear Governor, Chief Barr Nyesom Wike, is very interested in the well-being of Rivers people; not for the sake of your votes, but for you to be safe, healthy and go about your businesses.

"That is why he has revamped and upgraded facilities in all our hospitals and primary health centres across the State. So take advantage of this and be in health, because health is wealth," the Council Boss said.

The Chairman lamented that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was not fair to Degema and Rivers people, because it had stipulated a mandatory 2 terms of 8years for the governor to be in office as governor, otherwise Rivers people would have been glad to have him as a lifetime governor, owing to his superlative performance in office.

He stated that the governor had performed so well that Rivers people and Nigerians across party, religion and ethnic divides were now yearning for him to come and transform the Country as President in 2023.

While attributing his administration's successes to the sterling leadership of the governor, Hon. Williams stated that; "because of Gov Wike's tutelage, I am the best Chairman on Security in Nigeria.

"That assessment, nomination, voting and eventual emergence were independently decided by Nigerians and by the grace of God, we are going to Abuja next week to take the Award."

Meanwhile, on the Cholera outbreak in Bakana, the Council Boss disclosed that by next week, all confirmed 3 contaminated Boreholes and Wells at Dappa, Sogules and Oko Compounds, in Ward 2 and Ward 4 respectively, where highly acidic contents with Fecal Coliform contamination were confirmed, would be shutdown by the Council.

He added that Potable water would be provided in place of the contaminated ones by the Council, as soon as possible, in order to assuage the sufferings of those who depend on those water sources for their daily lives.

Hon. Williams in the interim, empathized on the need for Bakana and Degema people to be hygienic, by cleaning their environment, boiling their water, keeping their foods away from perching flies, visiting health facilities on time over suspected cases etc, as means to check the spread of the Cholera disease.

On her part, a retired Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. Nnesochi Offor, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Mrs. Utchay Ndidi Chikanele, while encouraging mothers to take advantage of the programme, noted that the health of women and children could not be overemphasized, as they occupied a central place in the society.

"If we look round, we can see women and their children in their numbers. That is because, women are the bearers, carers and the rearers of children, and our children are the leaders of tomorrow. So it is keen that we should ensure that their health is at optimum.

"We know that the importance is what has necessitated the setting aside this week to enhance and promote the care of the women and children in Degema and in Rivers State in general.

"Therefore I shall request that we should take it very seriously and we should as much as possible, make and take full advantage of all the services that are being provided for you; not only for this week, but in continuance, because these services are available at all times in the primary healthcare centres," Dr. Offor noted.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Roland Obed-Whyte, who described the Council Chairman as a 'Health-Friendly' Chairman, commended him for agreeing to host Rivers State in Degema LGA for the health programme.

He stressed the importance of pre-assessment of pregnant women before delivery to save the lives of both the mother and child.

"It is important you know that pre-assessment before delivery is important in the care of every mother. Sometimes we call it antenatal care, because without care for the mother, somebody will have a child with deformity.

"It is important again that the mother after care, has safe delivery by a skilled birth attendant.

"Post natal care is also very important after delivery, including family planning. And these are major goals in public health sector that we must look at.

"For the child, we know very well that immunization is key to every child's survival. A lot of us do not take it serious.

"So coming to Degema to sensitize our people to take these adjuncts and these provisions very seriously is very very essential," Dr. Obed-Whyte emphasized.

He commended Degema people for coming out en masse to attend the programme, disclosing that the attendance was unprecedented since the commencement of the MNCH Week in Rivers State.

In his contribution, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Primary Health-Care Management Board, Dr. Agiriye Harry, advised men of 40 years and above to regularly go for prostate screening, to avoid prostate cancer.

He equally urged women to regularly examine their breasts for lumps, in order to detect and address early signs of breast cancer.

Highpoint of the event was Flagoff of the programme by the Council Chairman, who performed the mock exercise of inoculating and administering drugs on a child, signaling the commencement of the MNCHW programme.

The event was well attended by dignitaries across the State including; the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, his Vice, Hon. Mrs Maureen Harry, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr Roland Obed-Whyte; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Uche Uriri; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Barr. Mrs. Ibiwari Clapton Ogolo and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Mrs. Itong Awani.

Others were; Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Primary Health-Care Management Board, Dr. Agiriye Harry, retired Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. Nnesochi Offor, Director Ministry of Health (MOH) Degema, Dr. Idawarifa Cookey-Gam, heads and representatives of health partners including, Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH), Saving One Million Lives, Programme for Results (SOML P for R), Nutrition International (NI) and the Rivers State Primary Health-Care Management Board (RSPHCMB).

Others include; Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in DELGA, Disciple Peter Abbey, traditional rulers, top functionaries and Staff of the Council, amongst others.

DELGA Chairman Declares Zero Tolerance To Mother/Child Mortality
••• As Council Hosts Maternal, Neonatal Child Health Week Flagoff, March 2

The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has declared that the LGA would have zero tolerance for the preventable cases of mother and child mortality, as measures would be taken to curtail such incidences.

The Council Boss made the declaration, Thursday, when he played host to leadership of the Rivers State Primary Health-Care Management Board, at the Council Secretariat in Degema.

He stated that despite the complex nature of the LGA and paucity of funds, the Council would ensure that Health awareness gets to the nooks and crannies of DELGA, in order for indigent dwellers to benefit from medical interventions, provided by the government to save lives.

Hon. Williams lamented that it was unacceptable for mothers or their children to die before, during or after child birth, owing to lack of proper information, noting that the Administration would partner with relevant stakeholders in the LGA to do the needful.

He apprised that, following his last meeting with health officials in the LGA, Council had already engaged churches and would extend same to schools, as strategic partners, to effectively sensitize and galvanize the people to respond positively.

While commending the Management for their services, particularly the free delivery offer for pregnant women, who register with the Primary Health Centres and attend antenatal care sessions for at least 4 times, Hon. Williams maintained that the Council under his watch was poised to up the poor rating of the LGA on the areas of vaccination and other health services.

On the hosting of the Second Round of the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW), the Chairman assured that the Council would give all necessary support, to ensure that the programme went on seamlessly, adding that security would be top-notch.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Primary Health-Care Management Board (RSPHCMB), Dr. Agiriye Harry, while commending the Council Chairman for supporting the activities of the Primary Health-Care in the LGA, disclosed that the forthcoming MNCHW, would take place from Monday, 28th February to Friday, March 4, 2022.

He stated that as a way of reducing maternal, neonatal and childhood morbidities and mortalities, the weeklong programme would offer the following free health services;

•Deworming

•Immunization

•Vitamin A Supplementation

•Nutrition Promotion

•Antenatal Care

•Free Deliveries

•Birth Registration

•Family Planning

•HIV/AIDS interventions

•Free Malaria Treatment

•Distribution of Treated Mosquito Nets

Dr. Harry however appealed to the Council Boss to assist the Ministry, by sensitizing and mobilizing the people of Degema to massively turnout, in order to fully benefit from the health intervention.

Present at the meeting were; the Executive Chairman of DELGA, Hon. Michael John Williams, his Vice and Supervisor for Health, Hon. Maureen Obuba Harry, Leader of the Degema Legislative Assembly, Hon. Barr. Johnson Eugene Johnson, Chief of Staff, Hon. Ipalibo Horatio Yellowe, Secretary to Council, Mr. Nicolas Harry, Chief Whip of the Degema Legislative Assembly, Hon. DELGA Council To Collaborate With Primary Health-Care Over Recurrent Cholera Outbreaks, COVID-19 Vaccination

The Degema Local Government Council is set to partner with the Primary Health-Care Management in the LGA, to combat the recurrent Cholera outbreaks, recorded in parts of the LGA, in recent times.

The collaboration would also boost the government's fight against the dreaded Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19), through grassroot sensitization on compliance with the COVID-19 protocol.

The Council Chairman, Hon. Michael John Williams, who spoke, Tuesday, when he played host to a team of Primary Health-Care officials, at his Conference Hall in Degema, stated that a coordinated awareness campaign would be adopted to properly disseminate the Health Tips to conscientize people at the local Communities.

On the COVID-19 Vaccination, the Council Boss stated that the Council leadership would play an exemplary role, in order to instill confidence in the minds of the people, especially those who have misgivings about the vaccines.

He directed the 17 Councillors of the LGA to take the sensitization to their people at the Wards, adding that the issue needed a grassroots approach to effectively handle.

The Council Boss noted that to make the message more effective and credible, Council officials should endeavour to get vaccinated, in order to instill confidence in their people.

On the Cholera outbreaks in Bakana, Tombia and Bille Communities, the Council Chairman disclosed that he was liaising with the relevant authorities and would come up with a permanent solution to end the recurrence of the disease, as soon as the root causes were identified.

Earlier, the Local Government Immunization Officer (LIO), Isokari Akobo Owuso, lamented that the LGA coverage on the COVID Vaccination was low, due to insufficient awareness, leading to underutilization of the COVID Vaccines.

The LIO, who stated that the virus was still very much around and spreading from person to person, however added that with the strategic partnership of the Council, the needed awareness would be created, resulting in behavioural and attitudinal changes amongst residents.

On her part, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer, Ms Limejuiceba Bob-Manuel, disclosed that about 93 Cholera cases had so far been identified, with 10 deaths recorded, since the outbreak of the disease in the LGA.

While calling for timely report of suspected cases at the Primary Health Centres, she noted that ignorance and self-medications were mostly responsible for avoidable deaths.

Ms Bob-Manuel gave the following preventive tips to contain the Cholera disease;

•Boiling of water before drinking

•Regular hand-wash

•Covering of foods

•Clean environment, etc.

Present at the meeting were; the Council Chairman, Hon. Michael John Williams, his Vice and Supervisor for Health, Hon. Mrs. Maureen Obuba Harry, and the 17 Councillors of the LGA.

While on the team of the Primary Health-Care were; Isokari Akobo Owuso (Local Government Immunization Officer), Ms Limejuiceba Bob-Manuel (Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer), Olu Adokiye (Social Mobilization Officer) and Theophilus Jacob (Deputy Immunization Officer).

Chieftaincy Conferment On Governor Wike By Kalabari Well-Deserved, Says DELGA Chairman

The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has described as well deserved, the Chieftaincy Title of 'Se-Ibidokibo 1 of Kalabari' (One who does good things for the Kalabari people), conferred on Governor Nyesom Wike by the Amanyanabo of Abonnema, HM King (Barr) Disrael Gbobo Bob-Manuel (ii), Owukori IX, on behalf of the Kalabari traditional institution.

Speaking at the sidelines of the Kalabari Civic Reception, held in honour of Governor Wike at Abalama, Saturday, the DELGA Council Boss stated that the Governor was a blessing to the people of the Kalabari Ethnic Nationality, adding that the occasion was intended to acknowledge, honour and appreciate the Governor for his goodwill towards the Kalabari people.

He said the footprints of the governor in Kalabari land were so visible and unprecedented that the Kalabari people, being a grateful tribe, feel compelled to do the needful, stressing that it had no political motive.

"Since 1999, no administration in Rivers State had done what the governor has done and still doing for the Kalabari people, be it in infrastructural and human capacity development.

"Today, under Gov Wike we have the rare privilege of producing the Deputy Governor as well as the Secretary to the State Government. This is truly unprecedented.

"We're therefore not doing this reception in order to curry favour from the governor ahead of the 2023 governorship elections, but to say 'thank you' for standing shoulder to shoulder with the Kalabari people and for doing for us, what past administrations promised but failed to do; the Trans-Kalabari Road and many others," he said.

Hon. Williams, while praying God to continue to be gracious to the governor and give him more opportunities to serve humanity, assured him of the continued support and loyalty of the Kalabari people, even after leaving office.

The occasion was grand and attracted the crème de la crème of Kalabari, including dignitaries from within and outside Rivers State.

The rich cultural heritage of the Kalabari people were in display, as the Kalabari Ekine Sekiapu Society, Iria dance group and others were on hand to thrill and entertain guests.
