CHAPTER B
THE NEW DAWN

Ashley, Cody and Mr Kayode continued their journey on foot then they got to a jungle, the place was silent but the sound of owls were heard, the whole place was creepy, everyone was extra concious but Cody

"you know i kinda like this place, it is a historical temple, its creepiness can help you meditate beyound your imagination", Cody said

"Cody can you please be serious for once?", Mr kayode asked

"listen, listen, the sounds from the owl, the whistle of th wind, the atmosphere.... Hmmmm a perfect place for a gentle soul, Kay you need to stay here you know cos you worry too much", Cody answered

Ashley noticed a movement in the surrounding, she became vigilant as Mr Kayode and Cody talked along, then immediately, Ashley jumped into the bush and held a youngman- 5'7 tall, athletic man with dark hair and fair in complexion-hostage

"who are you? How long have you been following us?", Ashley quized the terrified youngman with a gun pointed at his head

Mr kayode and Cody turned around and saw the scene

"Jesus! Ashley since when did you have a gun", Cody exclaimed

"Danny?", Mr kayode said

"you know him?", Ashley asked

"yes, he is my younger brother", Mr kayode replied "Danny what are you doing here, how long have you been following us"

"we dont have time for all that now i saw the ship you were in before head towards the caves where the Pack is, they should be here any moment", Danny informed them.

"how can we trust him?", a worried Ashley asked

"Dont worry Ash, he's my brother i can always keep him in line", Mr Kayode answered

As they continued moving towards Zugor, Cody was still wondering how Ashley had a gun all this while and nobody knew

"Ashley since when did you have a gun?", Cody asked again but Ashley laughed off the question and changed the topic.

The Pack soon arrived at isle but saw no sign of anyone nearby, so they divided themselves into two groups and went seperate ways in search of the ringbearer.

"Jade, i have waited for too long and your men are not forthcoming, prepare my ship, we leave for Zugor now", the boss said

"with pleasure", jade answered

When the vessel had passed through the cave of shadows and was approaching Zugor, it suddenly stopped.

"whats wrong", Ashley asked mr Kayode,
"lets go check it out", mr kayode replied

when they allighted, the met Lego working on it,

"Lego is everything alright?", mr kayode inquired.

"no sire, this beauty(the vessel) has fallen asleep,but dont worry its prince charming is here, i will awake it shortly ",

"oh great! Anybody know where i can get a smoke?, i am cold here", Cody said

"yea sire, i got some cigar in me pocket you come take some", Lego replied
Cody went to Lego and collected the cigar,

"thanks man so when will your beauty be ready?"
"Very soon sire, just soon", Lego replied with a smile.

Two days later and the ship had not still moved, the trio of mr kayode, Ashley and Cody bade lego farewell as the continued the journey on foot.

When they had left, Lego immediately fixed what he had earlier removed from the vessel and the vessel worked again, then he sailed straight to where the pack had earlier told him the would be "in the caves".

"sir, a man is here to see you", a member of the pack informed their leader,

"send him anyway i dont want to see anybody", the leader replied

"you have to see him sir, he says he has info in the ring and pendant"

"why didnt you say so since, bring him in"

2 members of the pack brings in Lego, who is already smiling from cheek to cheek,

"young man what do you have for me?", the leader asked

"sire, stick with me i can get you the ring and pendant", Lego replied

"oh really!, get us some wine quickly",the leader orderd "have your seat, so where can i get them"

"sire, i have seen the ringbearer and i know where they are heading to, i worked with them"

"i see, so what makes you what to tell me where they are heading if you work with them"

"i am a businessman, "the world owes me" and so if its not making money, its not making sense",Lego replied

"give him the reward"

Lego was given the reward; he looked through it and smiled

"Zugor, sire they are heading to Zugor, it is not far away from here and they are unarmed and going by foot so you can get them easily", Lego informed the leader with a smile on his face. Lego took the reward and set out to leave

"kill that st*p*d son of a bit*h and get me my money back", the leader ordered.

Pko! Pko! Pko! Lego was shot dead and the money recovered.

"quickly lets go out after them they must not get to Zugor before us", the leader roared

Lego continued sailing while Ashley went under to a room in the vessel to have a rest, mr Kayode and Cody were discussing issues concerning the safety of Ashley and the World as the drank some rum.

"halt you ship, we are here for a search", an annoucement came from another ship as they approached the cave of shadows.
Lego slowed down and some fierce looking men dressed in black suit got into his vessel, when Cody and Mr kayode saw this they took cover and disguised themself

"hulo my friend have you seen some girl with a ring and a pendant?", the leader of the Pack asked

"no sire, i am just a merry youngman on soaring the waters", Lego replied

"oh i see, can we search the vessel, if you dont mind?"
Lego became scared but summored courage to say

"i must warn you sire, this vessel has 2 crocodiles on it, becareful where u enter into", Lego said with a smile on his face.

"hmmmmmm", the leader of the pack thought to himself
"very well then, if you see anybody with a glowing diamond ring and a pendant, reach me at the caves i am always there, a great reward awaits whoever brings me useful info on it".

"aye sire, hw much is this reward?", Lego asked as he licked his lips.

"a 100 million dollars", the leader replied with a mischievious smile
just then Ashley who had been sleeping got up an was heading outside when she noticed the presence of the fierce men, she immediately ran back and hid herself.

"what was that sound? You two go check it out", the leader of the pack commanded. As the men set out to go,.......................




"sire, its my crocodile, thats how the disturb when they are hungry, it would be in you best interest not to go there", Lego warned "i will get them some fish now dont worry", he added

"very well ...."

"Lego, Lego is my name sire"

"very well Lego keep an eye for the ring and get a reward"

"no problem sire",
They but shook hands even though the leader of the pack was suspious of Lego. The Pack left Lego's vessel and boared their own ship

Mr kayode and Cody came out of thier hiding place as did Ashley,

"hahahahahahahahah kay i think say you no dey fear wetin make you perch like fowl wen rain beat since", Cody tried to make light of the situation

Mr kayode was having none of that as he stepped close to Ashley
"hope they didnt see you?"

"no they didnt, its safe with me", Ashley replied

"thanks Lego, you were great in handling them, the world owes you",Mr kayode said

"no problem sire, the world really owes me", Lego said as he smiled and navigated the vessel closer to the caves of shadow.

"Jade get the scientists and the hackers, we have to create a plague, to cause confusion in the city, we tell the people that the ring is the only solution to the problems and whoever gets me the ring would be handsomely rewarded hahahahahahahaha"

"Thats mischevious, i love mischief", Jade replied and carried out the instruction

when the scientists and the hackers arrived, they disscussed the possible plagues that would affect the city and the world most with the beast of Avarice and then the beast selected one of the plauges.

"hackers, i want you to hack every television and radio, every mobile device i want to speak to the world"

"Aye sire right away", the leader of the hackers answered

As soon as they hacked every device, the beast went on air with an audio message

"Hello world, i know you dont know me, but i have come to rescue you, think of a world with no sickness, good government, high standard of living, they are all possible....."

"..... But the solution lies in a ring, a diamond ring and a pendant, anyone who can get me this ring and pendant, will be greatly rewarded", the beast of avarice annouced

After the annoucement, all TVs, radios and mobile devices blacked out and this created a confusion in the city and beyound.

when Mr kayode and co heard this annoucement, they disscussed it and had to re-strategize their journey

"o boy this in not good", Cody said

"we have to be careful especially you Ashley, the legend says the female ringbearer would be very vunlreable ", said Mr kayode

"so what do we do no?", Ashley asked

"According to the map, the is no exact road to Zugor, buy if we stop outskirt of the city we would have to get a water vessel that would take us to the cave of shadows from there we can locate Zugor"

when they got to the outskirt of the city, the stopped their car and went on foot through a path and got to a river where they hired a water vessel

"we are heading to the cave of shadows", mr kayode said

"the caves?", a suprised Lego the sailor asked, he owned the vessel, he is a young man tall and slim, dark in complexion and dressed in a not so white shirt and a kneel long short.

"yes, the cave; we dont want anyone knowing we on this vessel", mt kayode added

"nobody ever goes to the cave, what are you going to do there?"

"zugor, zugor is our destination"

"i can take you all the way, only of you are ready to pay me"

"ok, can we leave now", Cody cuts in

mr kayode pays Lego and they all board the ship

"As far as anyone knows, this is a shipping vessel, just keep your head down and do whatever i tell you we will be just alright", Lego said as he controlled the vessel.

CHAPTER 7
THE QUEST

When the trio of Ashley, Cody and Mr kayode got to Mr kayode's house, they discovered that the door of the house was open. Mr kayode rushed in and is soon joined by Ashley and Cody, the house was ransacked and disorganised.

Beep! Beep!! Beep!! A phone on the table beeped

Mr kayode moved slowly to the phone and pressed it, the beeped stopped and a voice came from the phone

"ASHLEY, YOUR LEGS CAN RUN FAST NOT FAR, THERE IS NO HIDING PLACE FOR YOU, WE ARE COMING FOR YOU ASHLEY, WE ARE COMING FOR THE RINGGGGGGG".
"THIS MESSAGE WILL SELF DESTRUCT IN 29-28-27..."

As the countdown continued, Mr kayode rushed into his room and got a map and his travel pack he had earlier arranged and they all ran outside

"...5....4....2....1..."



..............the phone beeped and switched off.

On the outside, Mr Kayode and the others took cover for fear that it could be a bomb, after a while, they all came out and Cody who was already terrified said

"holy smokes! Kay we have to leave here now they may still be around......"

"you are right, y'all get into the car", mr kayode replied. They all entered into the car and set off for their journey

" Jade i need the ring, there is no time", the beast of Avarice said

" Boss, dont worry we have them within reach, my men say the are on their way to Zugor, we will wait for them and over power them", jade informed

"hahahahahahahaha" the beast of avarice laughed out wickedly "once i get thr ring the world would be my oyster....... Oyster i love oysters hahahahahhahahaha"

Later that day, Ashley and Mr Kayode went to his friends house, Cody, a chubby jovial man with big nose and a mustache, he uses lenses and is well versed in history. The house was old fashioned but beautifully maintained, the inside was like a library,the chair in the sitting room was made of cane and a wooden table at the middle.

Knock! Knock! Knock!!

"Goodness me! Mr kayode come in come in", Cody said joyfully

"have your seat, what has brought the fox out of its hole?", he asked.

"Cody, i've come to seek your assistance, i want you to join me on a journey to Zugor", mr kayode answered.

Spushhhhh Cody spits off the drink he had in his mouth

"Zugor? What are you going to do there", he asked with interest

"This is my friend Ashley, she is the ringbearer, we need to help her return the ring and the pendant to Zugor". Mr kayode said

ha..ha..hahahahhahahaha Cody burst into a loud laugh and says

"u're funny, this has to be the best joke i've had today","u're kidding right?"

"No am not",mr kayode replied "have a look at this", mr kayode said as the took the ring and pendant from Ashley and showed it to Cody, whose mouth was opened in suprise when he saw them.

"This is a historical monument, its over 2000 years old",Cody said, "forget Zugor i say we sell it to a muesum, what say you?",he joked.

"Cody i see you have not changed, money is not the most important thing now",Mr kayode said

"seriously i thought the legend of the diamond ring was a myth",said Cody

"yea so i thought till i saw them myself"

"so when do we leave",Cody inquired

"tonite",mr kayode replied

"why so soon"

"The earlier we get to Zugor, the better cos the beast of Avarice is after the ring already", Ashley cuts in

"o boy thats bad new", Cody replied
"very well then we leave tonite, i would do anything for this damsel",he added.

The trio left Cody's house and headed for Mr kayodes house as they prepared for the journey to Zugor.

CHAPTER 6
THE JOURNEY TO ZUGOR

"I dont know whats out there or whats waiting for me but whatever it is i am going to find it", Ashley thought as shr drove to Mr Kayodes house.

When she got there, Mr kayode was not in, so she called and informed him of her presence. When mr kayode arrived, he met Ashley standing by her car looking dejected.

"sorry for keeping you waiting, i was at the office when i got your call", mr kayode said as he moved the door of his house. They both entered in, Ashley settled down and narrated the recent incidents to mr kayode who was shocked by her revelation.

"my dear, i sympathetize with you on the death of your mom, please take heart", mr kayode said and continued "recently i have been reading my dads diary and i found out that the pack is a group that works for the beast of Avarice"

"beast of Avarice? What has that got to do with this whole thing", Ashley asked

"the beast of Avarice according to my understanding is a power seeking entity that seeks the ring and pendant so as to control the world", mr kayode answered "if it gets the ring and the pendant it would be too powerful to stop", he added

"hmmm i see, so when do we leave for Zugor", Ashley inquired.

"we leave tonite, we dont have time"

"but dont we need more people so that we can fight against the pack?"

"dont worry, there is a guy i used to work with, he can help us""we will go see him later today".

Elsewhere at the cranium arena, the abode of the beast of avarice, a poorly lit place, with four rooms and an office.

at the office in the cranium, all the members of the pack who had gone to Ashley's house were kneeling with their face down before a woman, Jade- a huge and muscular woman with blonde hair and little or no smile- and a man who is facing a map on the wall of the office.

"where is the ring and the pendant", Jade roared but the whole place was silent

"we searched the whole house, we seached every where but did not see it", an annonymous answer came.

"but we..we..left them a good message sire", a member of the pack said

"messeage? Message? What message?", jade asked angrily

"we killed d gateman and the mother of the ringbearer", he replied

"oh i seeeee,", jade said as she nod her head, "i have a message for you too"

pko! Pko! Pko! Jade shoots the man in his head

"tell the devil i say hi", she said and continued"who else has a message", she asked but nobody replied, they were all terified.

"now leave her and go get me that ring and pendant", Jade yelled.

While members of the pack ran out, jade apologized to her boss for the failure to get the ring at first attempt.

"sorry? Tell that to the beggar, i need the ring, get me the ring". The boss reply

Ashley runs into the sitting room and finds Adamu ind the sitting room tied and in a pool of blood, she rushes to meet him and finds him gasping for air with his throat slit

"Adamu!, where is my mom? Who did this?"

"dem...dem carry mad..am go...go", Adamu said and breathed his last.

"Adamu! Adamu!", Ashley screamed as she burst into tears

she got up and moved to her mothers bedroom and met the whole room scattered but did not find her mom there. Ashley rushed to her room and found her mother there...............



........... Lying on the floor in a pool of her own blood with bullet wounds on her right breast and abdomen

"Mam! Mam! Who did this to you? What happened here"

"T...he...the...", Mrs Adegbite stuttered and gasped for air, "the pack""they...t..hey...want the...."

"they want what mom", a terrified Ashley screamed

".....the ring and..and pendant", mrs adegbited replied,Ashley immediately understood all THE PACK stood for.

"Mam, am sorry for this, am really sorry mam", Ashley pleaded

"No..No, Ash i am sorry for not believing you all this while please forgive me", mrs Adegbite said and gave up the ghost

"Noooooooo mam noooooo dont go mam, i love you mam come back. No mama nooo", Ashley wailed and rolled on the floor.

Ashley picked up her phone and informed her Dad about the demise of his wife her mom and Adamu. Cheif Adegbite was devasted and immediately returned from the office.

The remains of Mrs adegbite and Adamu the gate man was taken to the mortuary and the police was duly informed about the group behind the their death.

"Ashley, Ashley, the isle of Zugor, you must go now, the world needs you, i need you", Danre said in tears

"pls Danre, i cant do this, its too hard,Mam is gone, Adamu is gone, i cant do this pls", Ashley replied in tears

"Ash please do this for the world, do this for me, i cannot enter the resting place if you dont go to Zugor", Danre explained "Ash pls dont turn your back on the world, dont turn your back on me".

Ashley immediately woke uo and looked at the time, it was 10am. She had her bath, took her bag and set out to meet Mr kayode.

CHAPTER 5
NOW OR NEVER

Ashley entered her house and met her mom in the sitting room.

"welcome my dear", she greeted Ashley who answered her faintly as she headed towards her room.

"some men came looking for you", mrs Adegbite said, Ashley stopped and asked

"did they say who they are"

"they didnt say much, they said their name was THE PACK"

"the pack? what did they look like?, asked Ashley

"fierce looking, dressed in black suits, they smelt trouble, hope all is well my dear".

"no, no problem mam"
Ashley reflected as she went to her room,"the pack? Who could they be? What could they want?", a lot more ran through her mind as she took her bath and rested.

During dinner, Ashley told her parents about the weird day she had had.

"haba! Ashley are all these as a result of too much movies you have been watching lately", joked mrs Adegbite in a yoruba tone

"the other time it was Danre appearing now this""hmmm isle of Zugor ni, isle of Mucor ko",she added

"hahahahaha my wife you have not lost any of your sense of humour eh", said Cheif Adegbite as he laughed and continued"Ash dear, i think you need a break, a vacation would do u real good"" or a fine man maybe?",he said and winked.

Ashley ate her food in silence as she meditated on the jokes of her parents and the preciding event.

Early the next morning, Ashley set out for a walk. After a long walk, she decided to visit a friend who lived near by. Ashley knocked on the door and her friend, Scott- a fitness coach, tall,huge and handsome with six packs, pony tail and well shaved, smartly dressed in a basketballer's kit and snickers- opened the door

"hey! Look who we've got here, Ashley Adegbite the great!, come in...come in black barbie",Scott said in his baritone voice

"scott, you havent changed abit, smooth talker as always" Ashley said and smiled as she went in

"i was about going to the gym before you came in", he hits his head with his hands "where are my manners? So what do i offer you", he asked Ashley

"nah, dont worry about that i jus need a friend to talk to"

"ok if you say so, so whats up am all ears"
Ashley narrated to Scott all she had been experiencing since Danres death.

"Ash, believe me i understand what you are going through but take it easy, its all gonna pass with time", Scott adviced. After that, Ashley bade him farewell and headed home.

As Ashley approached her house, she noticed that the gate was left open which is very unusual, she walked through the gate and called out

"Adamu! Adamu!","why did this man leave the gate open", she thought to herself. She closed the gate and walked toward their sitting room, as she approached she noticed that............


........ The door leading to the living room was also open.....

"Mom! Mom!"....

Truth be told, you are doing well, and I like your personalty sir. Others would withdrawn due to correction, wile others would have retailiated with anger but you kept on pushing. Like you are singing the song, 'I'll keep moving on'.
Question for you: Is Danre and Igbo name because his mother was using Igbo to lament.
'The inside was dusty,'--- Might make sense if you use its room to replace the inside.

Ashley and Mr Kayode soon arrived at an old, rickety and abandoned house. Its room was dusty, full of spider web and unkept.

Kuff! Kuff! Mr kayode coughs as he makes his way through the door.

"this is my dads house, since his death nobody has been here"

"there is a box somewhere in his room where he keeps some strange stuff lets check it if we can find anything there". Mr kayode said as he moved towards his fathers room.

A confused but curious Ashley followed mr kayode. They searched everywhere and found the box. In the box they found a pendant, a diary and some other things. Mr kayode handed the pendant to Ashley and then looked through the dairy

"Ashley Adegbite, that would be you right?" mr kayode asked

"yes, yes, its my name", answered a still confused Ashley

"your name is written here and it states that you are the true and final ringbearer. According to what is written here only the female ringbearer can put a final stop to this every century renewal". Mr kayode explained

"No, I... i... i cant do this, i cant just leave my family, my job and embark on this mystical journey", Ashley said.

"please Ashley for the sake of the world, you have to do this, the fate of the world rests on you hand", mr kayode said in an attempt to motivate Ashley

"no! Dont tell me that, please look for another ringbearer",said a crying ashley as she ran out of the building

mr kayode followed and comforted her, they soon entered their car and went home. When mr Kayode dropped ashley off, he said to her

"Ashley, the world needs you now dont turn your back on it".

CHAPTER 4
CHIFU KNOWS BEST

It was a black friday for Danre's family, his mother, mrs Bamidele- a fat short eldely woman with dark hair abd blue eyes- dressed in black regelia rolled on the floor as she mourned her son. Her hope for a better life has become faded, after Danres fathers death, Danre had been the bread winner of the family, taking care of his elderly mom and providing for his siblings who were still students in the university.

"my enemies ooo my enemies, what have i done to you ooo chai", wailed mrs Bamidele.

"you killed my husband, now my son chai chimooo", she continued in tears

"kill me! Just kill me!" she exclaimed " cos i dont know what i hav done to you ooo"

"mama its ok, its ok o mama, you want me to start crying eh",
Ashley said in a weak teary voice as she struggled to hold back her tears.

The atmosphere was of gloom,cries and shouts from people in every corner filled the air. Some people tried to comfort Danre's mother as he was belng laid to rest, his siblings cried thier eyes out. More sympathizers trooped in to the internment site and Mr kayode was one of them, he paused and contemplated on the nothingness of life.

"how can a young man so full life and vigour be gone so soon", he wondered as went along to search for Ashley and found her.

Mr kayode tried his best to comfort her but she kept crying, oh poor Ashley! Why has life chosen to be so unfair with her. After Danre was finally buried, Ashley tried to speak with mr kayode but he told her to visit his house the following day when she would be more mentally and emotionally balanced. They exchanged greetings and all went sorrowfully away.

The following day, Ashley arrived at Mr Kayode's house, a bungalow painted beautifully with grey and violet, the interior was nicely arranged with everything a modern house ought to have.

Ashley discussed the whole Danre appearance ish to Mr kayode and he seemed a bit puzzled as he had neva spoke with Danre before.

"let me show you something i noticed", Ashley said as she brought out the diamond ring Danre had given her.

"anytime i put this ring on, i feel like a different woman, like i have some super powers or something", Ashley said.

"where did you get that from?", asked a suprised mr kayode as he was beginning to understand

"Danre gave me before his death"

"impossible!, i never thought i would see this day, my father told me about the legend of a diamond ring that in every century a ringbearer must return the ring and a pendant to the isle of Zugor for the parity of the world to be maintained", said mr Kayode

Ashley listened with keen interest as he continued

"Dont let anyone know you have it, keep it safe. If it gets to the wrong hands it mean doom for the world", he informed ashley and continued

"but something is wrong, all the other ringbearers have been male how come it works for you?", asked a confused Mr kayode and then he said

"follow me there is somewhere we must go now........"
