Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday ruled himself out of contesting for the presidency in the 2019 elections. According to Reuters, Osinbajo said this when he was posed on his ambitions at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London. There is a heightened uncertainty over whether President Muhammadu Buhari plans to contest the next election. Buhari, 74, took power in 2015 but has been absent for much of this year due to illness. Osinbajo, a 60-year-old law professor, served as acting president during Buhari’s absences, succeeding in calming tensions in the oil-producing Delta region and pushing small steps to improve the business climate, including foreign currency reforms. Some business leaders say he could provide stability by running for president himself in Feb 2019. “None of that is on the cards,” the Vice-President reportedly said. Osinbajo had earlier disowned a group known as Osinbajo Volunteers, which is campaigning for his election as President in 2019. His Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, had asked Nigerians to disregard the group, adding that Osinbajo had nothing to do with them. The group had noted that Nigeria now “has a leader who has a clue about what to do and (how to) turn Nigeria to a beloved land of our dreams.” It featured the activities of the Vice-President on its website, while calling on members of the public to volunteer for Osinbajo. It, however, noted that it did not receive the endorsement of the Vice-President, noting that it had never met him. The group added, “Note that Osinbajo did not endorse this volunteer group. We have never met him. We are strong believers in the fact that he is the right ruler for Nigeria and we must create a people’s volunteer base for him.” http://www.gistb4u.com/count-2019-presidency-osinbajo/

Hajiya Zainab Isah, the NYSC Coordinator in the state made this disclosure to newsmen in Lafia on Tuesday. Isah said that Oguntola Babatunde and Danjuma Salihu went to the river in the evening of Oct. 8 to swim but drowned, following which an Assistant Commissioner of Police informed the service about the incident. “It is very sad but I know God will grant them eternal rest and grant all of us, including their families, the fortitude to bear the loss. I can only say that we are bereaved but God knows better,” she said. She called on other corps members to be very careful and always obey the rules of their host communities. “What I heard from a very reliable source was that some farmers had drowned in that river some years back. “So when corps members enter a community, they should ask questions and watch their steps,” she said. Isah added that the bodies of the deceased had since been deposited at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia. http://www.gistb4u.com/2-corps-members-drown-nasarawa/

Chairman of the Movement for Nigeria’s Total Transformation, Chief Areoye Oyebola, has faulted the Nigerian federal lawmakers for ignoring the widespread call for the downward review of their “monumental salaries and allowances.” Oyebola said the recent outburst of the federal legislators by the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), was just one of many criticisms that had trailed the lawmakers over the years but to which they had turned deaf ears. “It is also strange, unthinkable and very disheartening that a senator, not minding the grinding poverty of Nigerians, earns $1.7m a year, which is far higher than the $400,000 yearly income of the United States’ President, whose stupendous country is the richest in the world. Even a member of the House of Representatives also earns more than the American President. What a tragic and pathetic situation! “Worse still, each of our National Assembly members earns more than the British Prime Minister, while the pay of a member of Ghana’s unicameral legislature is a very small fraction of our House of Representatives’ member jumbo pay of more than N10m in a month, let alone the monumental quarterly allowances that have led to serious public outcry. “The multi-million naira earned by the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives even worse, more outrageous and mind-boggling,” he said. Oyebola noted that despite their modest pay, compared to the Nigerian federal lawmakers, the legislators in Ghana worked harder and “have minimal absenteeism,” while they had also done much to sustain their country’s democracy, “which is a model for many African countries.” Oyebola called for a 90 per cent cut in the earnings of Nigerian elected public officials, saying with that they would still be richer than their counterparts in the US and the UK. He added, “As suggested below, for the National Assembly, the President, ministers, state governors, state legislators, chairmen of local governments and councillors should have their pay and allowances reduced to 10 per cent of their present earnings. If effected, each senator’s present earnings of N15m a month will be reduced to N1.5m or N18m a year. A similar 90 per cent reduction should be effected from the pay of members of the House of Representatives.” http://www.gistb4u.com/sad-nigerian-senators-earn-us-president-uk-prime-minister-combined%E2%80%8E-oyebola/
